The genus Aristolochia stands out as the most representative of the Aristolochiaceae plant family, with approximately 550 species distributed around the world, many of which have little or no studies reported in the literature. Investigation of the acetone extract from leaves of Aristolochia warmingii Mast. resulted in the isolation and identification of twenty-three compounds, mostly lignans and neolignans, including the new furofuran lignans warminin A (1), warminin B (2) and warminin C (3). The structures of the compounds were established by comprehensive spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses. A large amount of (–)-epieudesmin (4) was isolated from the extract, which suggests that A. warmingii could be a potential source of this compound. The hexane, acetone, ethanol, and ethanol Soxhlet extracts, in addition to fourteen of the isolated compounds, were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), but they did not show significant activities.

Abstract The mango cultivation has shown considerable losses, due to the intense occurrence of physiological disorders in its fruits, and stenospermocarpy is the main disorder under tropical semiarid conditions. So, the experiment was carried out to evaluate the potential loss of yield of mango cv. Palmer by stenospermocarpy, its relation with the nutritional state of the plant and yield as a function of fertilization strategies. The study was conducted in two experimental areas in the Brazilian semiarid. There is evidence that the leaf contents of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) influenced the development of stenospermocarpy fruits, associated with high temperature and low relative humidity in the flowering period of the crop. The incidence of fruits affected by stenospermocarpy reaches 90%, with an estimated yield loss of 28.81 Mg ha-1 for the mango cv. Palmer.
Palmer.

In this study, we evaluated the catalytic properties of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles (NPs) doped with Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye using a photo-Fenton process at pH 2.5, 7.0, and 9.0. The HA NPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, fluorescence spectrometry, and point of zero charge experiments. Upon using unmodified HA NPs, 1.33 mL of H2O2 30% (v/v), and ultraviolet radiation (125 W Hg lamp), the discoloration values achieved at pH 2.5, 7.0, and 9.0 were 88.4, 44.8, and 58.1%, respectively. For the HA NPs modified with Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3, the composition Ca2.5FeII2.5FeIII5(PO4)6(OH)2 yielded the best results during the photo-Fenton-based process, and discolorations of 100, 100, and 95.2% were achieved at pH 2.5, 7.0, and 9.0, respectively. To confirm the effectiveness of the Ca2.5FeII2.5FeIII5(PO4)6(OH)2 NPs, the total organic carbon (TOC) and toxicity effects on Lactuca sativa L. were evaluated, and reproducibility tests were performed. The TOC removal of the Ca2.5FeII2.5FeIII5(PO4)6(OH)2 NPs was ca. 90% and the toxicity of the MB dye was eliminated after 120 min of reaction; moreover, the NPs retained their physical stability and activity and were reused for 11 consecutive degradation experiments.

ABSTRACT: The principal component regression (PCR) and the independent component regression (ICR) are dimensionality reduction methods and extremely important in genomic prediction. These methods require the choice of the number of components to be inserted into the model. For PCR, there are formal criteria; however, for ICR, the adopted criterion chooses the number of independent components (ICs) associated to greater accuracy and requires high computational time. In this study, seven criteria based on the number of principal components (PCs) and methods of variable selection to guide this choice in ICR are proposed and evaluated in simulated and real data. For both datasets, the most efficient criterion and that drastically reduced computational time determined that the number of ICs should be equal to the number of PCs to reach a higher accuracy value. In addition, the criteria did not recover the simulated heritability and generated biased genomic values.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of using infrared radiation in the hot-air drying of Moringa oleifera grains on the inner dryer and grain temperatures, energy consumption, and grain quality. An experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme in 2013 to identify the optimum values of the air temperature (30 to 58 ºC) and infrared radiation application time (2.0 to 4.8 min) on moisture content, drying time, drying rate, inner dryer air temperature, grain temperature, energy consumption and quality of grains used as a natural coagulant for water treatment. The results obtained were moisture content from 4.40 to 4.76% wet basis; drying time from 0.50 to 2.00 h; drying rates from 0.70 × 10-3 to 2.05 × 10-3 kgwater kg-1 dry matter min-1; inner dryer air temperatures from 42.24 to 61.82 ºC; grain temperatures from 56.32 to 76.19 ºC; energy consumptions of the fan from 0.05 to 0.20 kWh, electrical resistances from 1.41 to 4.49 kWh; resistances of the infrared heaters from 0.48 to 1.56 kWh; water turbidities from 1.36 to 5.76 NTU; grain protein contents from 34.93 to 37.93%; and peroxide value of grains from 0.009 to 0.052 meq kg-1. Both evaluated factors increased the inner dryer air temperature and grain temperature. The electrical resistances contributed the most to the energy consumption. However, the infrared radiation reduced this consumption. The drying performed with air temperature of 44 °C and infrared radiation time of 3.4 min resulted in the highest protein concentration in the Moringa oleifera L. grains and in greater removal of the water turbidity in the water treatment.

Abstract This work aimed to study nickel-based oxygen carriers (OC) for Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) using H2 and CH4 as fuel. The reactivity and reaction kinetics of the OC were investigated, applying the shrinking core, nucleation and diffusion models in three dimensions, as well as whether the OC is thermodynamically favorable for the reaction. The results showed that the OC achieved high conversion for both fuels, proving to be quite reactive, while the fuel gas concentration and the temperature have a strong effect on the solids conversion. For the H2 combustion, the reaction rate can be described well by the shrinking core model, whereas for CH4 the nucleation model may better represent the experimental data. With respect to reactions that occur in the reduction reactor with the NiO/Ni redox system, it was observed that, for the investigated temperatures used in CLC, high values of the equilibrium constant were obtained, showing that practically complete conversion of the fuels is possible.

Abstract: This study evaluated the performance of three real time PCR techniques (qPCR) for the diagnosis of African Swine Fever in tissue samples. The three chosen techniques are based on amplification of viral protein VP72 gene sequences and are recommended by OIE (PSA-OIE), the United States official laboratories (PSA-USDA) and the European Union (PSA-EU). Target sequences of the viral DNA were inserted into synthetic plasmid, which served as a positive control for the standardization of techniques and optimization of reagents, determination of limits of detection and performance verification testing. To gauge repeatability and reproducibility of techniques, standard procedures were repeated on different days by two analysts and by changing mix reagents and equipment, and also by another laboratory. Analytical sensitivity tests were done with reference samples provided by an OIE reference laboratory and analytical and diagnostic specificity were tested with negative samples. The PSA-EU and PSA-USDA techniques were more advantageous to use because of lower concentration of oligos used. There were no significant differences in quantitative results varying the days of tests, analysts, equipment and the mix of reagents. The three techniques had high analytical and diagnostic specificity and sensitivity. The three qPCR techniques were considered equivalent and effective and can be adopted by any laboratory for issuing official diagnosis of African Swine Fever.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Depression is a major growing public health problem. Many population studies have found a significant relationship between depression and the presence of cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To establish the correlation between the Visual Analogue Scale of Happiness and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia in the population aged 60 years or over in the city of Tremembé, state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: An epidemiological survey involving home visits was carried out in the city of Tremembé. The sample was randomly selected by drawing 20% of the population aged 60 years or older from each of the city's census sectors. In this single-phase study, the assessment included clinical history, physical and neurological examination, cognitive evaluation, and application of both the Cornell Scale and the Analogue Scale of Happiness for psychiatric symptoms. The presence of depressive symptoms was defined as scores greater than or equal to 8 points on the Cornell Scale. RESULTS: A total of 623 subjects were evaluated and of these 251 (40.3%) had clinically significant depressive symptoms on the Cornell Scale, with a significant association with female gender (p<0.001) and with lower education (p=0.012). One hundred and thirty-six participants (21.8%) chose the unhappiness faces, with a significant association with age (p<0.001), female gender (p=0.020) and low socioeconomic status (p=0.012). Although there was a statistically significant association on the correlation test, the correlation was not high (rho=0.47). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was high in this sample and the Visual Analogue Scale of Happiness and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia should not be used as similar alternatives for evaluating the presence of depressive symptoms, at least in populations with low educational level.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of a six-month exercise program on neuropsychiatric disorders and on the performance of instrumental activities in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: The study included 20 patients with AD in the mild to moderate stages of the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) divided into two groups: the experimental group, composed of 10 women who participated in the six-month exercise program, and the control group, composed of the 10 remaining AD patients who did not take part in an exercise program during the same period. All participants were evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Exam for global cognitive function, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire for neuropsychiatric disorders, and the Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire for the degree of functional impairment. RESULTS: The control group showed functional and neuropsychiatric deterioration in the comparisons between pre- and post-intervention times and between groups. CONCLUSION: The experimental group showed a propensity for less deterioration in neuropsychiatric disorders and performance of instrumental activities compared to the sedentary group.
