Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. This study describes the rationale behind the iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras cruise science plan, reports its sampling strategy and methods, and summarizes its collected data and preliminary results.

RESUMO As doenças foliares da soja afetam o índice de área foliar (IAF) e a estrutura principal para a fotossíntese e a produtividade. O objetivo deste estudo foi propor uma nova metodologia para determinar o início das aplicações de fungicidas, com base no IAF, na taxa de aplicação e na inclusão de um fungicida multissítio, para controlar a ferrugem asiática da soja (FAS). O estudo foi implementado no delineamento de blocos casualizados e em dois locais, com quatro repetições em um esquema fatorial triplo mais um tratamento adicional (4 × 2 × 2 + 1), sendo 4 IAF da soja (0,9, 1,8, 3,6 e 6,1) indicadas para iniciar as aplicações de fungicida; dois volumes de pulverização (70 e 120 L ha-1); com ou sem fungicida multissítio (mancozeb), e tratamento sem fungicidas. A deposição de calda sobre as plantas não diferiu entre os manejos estudados para o IAF de 1,8 e 3,6. Os tratamentos incluindo fungicida multissítio em IAF de soja entre 3,6 e 6,1, em ambos os volumes, apresentaram resultados de controle superior. Os maiores rendimentos foram observados quando a aplicação de fungicida começou em 3,6 de IAF para os dois volumes. A melhor relação entre controle de doenças e produtividade ocorreu quando as aplicações começaram em 3,6 de IAF com 70 L ha-1 e fungicida multissítio.
ABSTRACT Soybean foliar diseases negatively affect leaf area index (LAI) and compromise the main structure for photosynthesis and grain yield. The objective of this study was to propose a new methodology to determine the commencement of fungicide application based on the soybean LAI, spray volumes, and the inclusion of a multisite fungicide to control Asian soybean rust (ASR). The study was implemented in a randomized block design at two locations, with four replicates in a factorial scheme plus one additional treatment (4 × 2 × 2 + 1) - four soybean LAI (0.9, 1.8, 3.6, and 6.1) indicating the initiation stages of fungicide applications, two spray volumes (70 and 120 L ha-1), with or without multisite fungicide (mancozeb), and a control treatment without fungicide. The spray deposition on plants did not differ between the treatments for 1.8 and 3.6 LAI. Treatments including the multisite fungicide for LAI between 3.6 and 6.1 for both spray volumes presented superior ASR control results. The highest soybean yields were observed when fungicide application started at 3.6 LAI for both spray volumes. The best correlation between disease control and grain yield occurred when the applications started at 3.6 LAI with 70 L ha-1 spray volume and the multisite fungicide.

Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Metabolomics, together with analytical methods and chemometric tools, point to new paths for selecting species that are resistant to pests and diseases. In this work, the forage palm species' metabolomic profile was investigated, and the relation between the chemical composition and resistance to Dactylopius opuntiae (carmine cochineal). The study was performed in cladodes of different non-susceptible cultivars (Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyck, Opuntia stricta (Haw.), Nopalea cochenillifera and susceptible cultivar (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.)). Metabolic profile showed 28 metabolites detected in the four species. From these total, 18 metabolites were annotated using UPLC-QTOF-MSE (ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with an electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry operating in MSE mode). By comparing the chemical profiles of non-susceptible and susceptible species through the application of chemometric tools, it was possible to obtain biomarkers (quercetin-3-O-2',6'-dirhamnosylglucoside, quercetin rhamnosyl dihexoside, and isorhamnetin-3-sophoroside-7-rhamnoside) that may be associated with resistance to carmine cochineal. Metabolomics based on UPLC-QTOF-MSE and chemometric allowed to establish the biomarkers knowledge of the resistance present in forage palm species. These results contribute to developing the initial understanding of flavonoids' role in the defense mechanisms of cactaceans and can be useful for application in breeding programs; it can increase the chances of success in creating new varieties of plants not susceptible to carmine cochineal.

Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae) is a typical species from the Brazilian cerrado that presents medicinal properties. The plant is distinguished by its large white flowers which produce a pleasant fragrance. X. aromatica is characterized by a wide range of medicinal application. These characteristics have motivated us to investigate the flowers volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via in vivo and in vitro protocols by a headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) technique combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS). Four different fibers, extraction times and temperatures were the parameters changed to lead to the maximum profiling of the volatile constituents. Data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 77 VOCs were extracted from the floral scent, with 52 and 68 extracted from in vivo and in vitro sampling, respectively, of which 48 were reported for the first time in the literature as volatile constituents from X. aromatica flowers. The extraction and identification of VOCs were successfully performed through HS-SPME/GC-MS. The PCA data allowed the identification of parameters that led to the maximum number of VOCs, which were polyacrylate (PA) and carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) fibers, 60 min extraction time and temperature of 29.0 °C. Among the volatile constituents identified, sesquiterpenes predominated, comprising about 61.04%.

Descrição temporal de forças de colisão: um modelo didático para laboratório de física assistido por sistema embarcado

Resumo Nesse trabalho é modelado um experimento para laboratório de física para descrever temporalmente a força de colisão em uma bola. O modelo emprega um sensor piezoelétrico, um singelo circuito programável (Arduino) ligado a um computador e um suporte para a liberação da bola em queda livre. Um programa em linguagem C foi confeccionado para ler o sinal do sensor e calcular a intensidade da força, bem como para calibrar o sistema. O algoritmo do processamento, empregando as leis da física, é apresentado, assim como o código-fonte. Após a colisão o sistema fornece uma tabela força x tempo com resolução de 120 μs, permitindo o aluno elaborar o gráfico da força ou fazer análise numérica, comprovando as leis da conservação do momento e da energia. Testes de desempenho são discutidos, mostrando que o modelo fornece uma exatidão muito boa, validando assim o método de calibragem. De baixo custo e montagem simples esse sistema embarcado, ou seja, controlado por programa, permite uma exploração minuciosa da força durante a colisão. Pode também ser estendido a outros fenômenos da física, bastando trocar o sensor e ajustar o programa.
Abstract In this study is modelled an experiment for physics laboratory to describe the temporal force in a ball collision. The model employs a piezoeletric sensor, a modest programable circuit (Arduino) connected to a computer and a vertical support to release the ball in free fall. A C-language program was created to read the sensor signal and calculate the force intensity as well as to calibrate the system. The processing algorithm employing the physical laws is presented as the source-code. After the collision a 120 μs resolution force x time table is provided, allowing the student to plot the graphic of force or to do numeric analisys, verifying the momentum and energy conservation laws. Performance tests are discussed showing that the model offers very good accuracy, thus validating the calibration method. At low cost and simple assembly, this embedded system, that is, program-controlled, allows a detailed exploration of force during the colision. As well it can be extended to another phisics effects, merely changing the sensor and ajusting the program.

The secondary metabolites of the aerial parts of Phyllanthus acuminatus Vahl (Phyllanthaceae) and the biological activity of one of them were characterized in this study. This chemical investigation led to isolation of two lignans, luclaricin (1), a new arylnaphtalene-typelignan, and justicidin B (2). The structures of isolated compounds were determined based on 1D and 2D-NMR, HRESIMS and IR. The cytotoxic activity of justicidin B was assessed against tumor cell lines (MCF-7, U251, NCI-ADR/RES, NCI-H460, OVCAR-3, HT29 and K562) and a non-tumor cell line (HaCat) using sulforhodamine B assay. Justicidin B showed strong cytotoxic activity against the tumor cell lines HT29, K562 and U251 with GI50 values of 2.28, 3.29 and 5.76 mol L-1, respectively.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Cardiac 123I-MIBG uptake in de novo Brazilian patients with Parkinson's disease without clinically defined dysautonomia

A cintilografia miocárdica com meta-iodo-benzil-guanidina (123I cMIBG) foi estudada na doença de Parkinson (DP), especialmente nos países asiáticos, mas não na América Latina. A quase totalidade desses estudos inclui indivíduos com DP com disautonomia definida. Nosso objetivo é relatar a neurotransmissão simpática cardíaca em doentes brasileiros com DP de novo esporádica, sem disautonomia clinicamente definida. Foi avaliada retrospectivamente uma série de 21 casos consecutivos com DP sem sintomas ou sinais de disautonomia observáveis pelos testes de beira-de-leito. Com a aplicação dos critérios de exclusão, este número foi reduzido para 14. A captação do 123I MIBG pelo SPECT foi baixa ou ausente em todos os pacientese; a relação coração / mediastino foi baixa em 12 dos 14. Concluímos que a 123c MIBG é capaz de identificar alteração da neurotransmissão simpática cardíaca em doentes com DP de novo sem disautonomia clinicamente definida.
Myocardial scintigraphy with meta-iodo-benzyl-guanidine (123I cMIBG) has been studied in Parkinson's disease (PD), especially in Asian countries, but not in Latin America. Most of these studies include individuals with PD associated to a defined dysautonomia. Our goal is to report the cardiac sympathetic neurotransmission in de novo Brazilian patients with sporadic PD, without clinically defined dysautonomia. We evaluated retrospectively a series of 21 consecutive cases with PD without symptoms or signs of dysautonomia assessed by the standard bedside tests. This number was reduced to 14 with the application of exclusion criteria. 123I cMIBG SPECT up-take was low or absent in all of them and the heart/mediastinum ratio was low in 12 of 14. We concluded that 123I cMIBG has been able to identify cardiac sympathetic neurotransmission disorder in Brazilian de novo PD patients without clinically defined dysautonomia.

A estimativa de algumas propriedades do solo através do uso de equações empíricas apresenta-se importante para redução do tempo e custo das análises laboratoriais, especialmente para aplicação rápida e precisa desses valores em projetos agrícolas, razão por que se objetiva, com este trabalho, testar e avaliar alguns modelos matemáticos existentes na literatura para estimativa da porosidade drenável em função da condutividade hidráulica do solo saturado. Trabalhou-se, então, com a camada superficial (0-15 cm) de solos da sub-bacia do Ribeirão Marcela (município de Nazareno, MG), utilizando-se 165 pontos amostrais. A equação proposta por Poulsen et al. (1999a) foi a que melhor se ajustou, indicando os menores valores de erro padrão de estimativa.
The estimative of some soil properties using empirical equations is important for reducing time and costs of laboratorial analysis, especially for rapid and precise application of these values in agricultural projects. The objective of this work was to test and evaluate some mathematical models presented in the literature to estimate drainable porosity as a function of saturated soil hydraulic conductivity. Drainable porosity and hydraulic conductivity were measured in 165 samples from the superficial layer (0-15 cm) of soils from the Marcela Brook Sub-Basin (Nazareno, Minas Gerais, Brazil). The equation developed by Poulsen et al. (1999a) presented the best results and the smallest error values.

No presente trabalho foi realizado um estudo fitoquímico com os diferentes extratos obtidos a partir de órgãos subterrâneos de Duguetia furfuracea (Annonaceae), o qual incluiu o teste de toxicidade para Artemia salina. O extrato alcaloídico, obtido das cascas do caule subterrâneo, conduziu ao isolamento de (-)-duguetina beta-N-óxido, de (-)-duguetina, dicentrinona, (-)-N-metiltetraidropalmatina e (+)-N-metilglaucina. Do extrato etanólico do cerne do caule subterrâneo obteve-se alantoína por precipitação. O óleo volátil e o extrato apolar também foram extraídos das cascas do caule subterrâneo. As substâncias 2,4,5-trimetoxiestireno, alfa-gurjuneno, aromadendreno, biciclogermacreno, (E)-metil-isoeugenol e a-asarona foram isoladas a partir do óleo volátil, e as substâncias policarpol, óxido de beta-cariofileno, 2,4,5-trimetóxi-estireno, alfa-asarona e asaraldeído foram obtidas do extrato em éter de petróleo. Este estudo descreve pela primeira vez o alcalóide beta-N-óxido de (-)-duguetina, e a ocorrência das substâncias (-)-N-metiltetraidropalmatina e (+)-N-metilglaucina na família Annonaceae. Todos os extratos se mostraram tóxicos nos testes com Artemia salina.
In the present investigation the underground parts of Duguetia furfuracea (Annonaceae) were used to conduct a phytochemical study that included the brine shrimp (Artemia salina) lethality bioassay. The substances (-)-duguetine beta-N-oxide, (-)-duguetine, dicentrinone, (-)-N-methyltetrahydropalmatine, and (+)-N-methylglaucine were isolated from the alkaloid extract of the bark of the underground stem, and the ureide allantoin was also isolated by precipitation from the ethanol extract of the wood of the underground stem. A fresh volatile oil and a nonpolar extract were also obtained from the underground stem bark. The substances 2,4,5-trimethoxystyrene, a-gurjunene, aromadendrene, bicyclogermacrene, (E)-methylisoeugenol, and alpha-asarone were isolated from the fresh volatile oil and polycarpol, beta-caryophyllene oxide, 2,4,5-trimethoxystyrene, a-asarone, and asaraldehyde were obtained from the petroleum ether extract. The present study describes for the first time the alkaloid (-)-duguetine beta-N-oxide and the occurrence of (-)-N-methyltetrahydropalmatine and (+)-N-methylglaucine in the family Annonaceae. All extracts were active in the brine shrimp lethality bioassay.

Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of Enterococci recovered from Brazilian intensive care units

We studied the antimicrobial resistance and the molecular epidemiology of 99 enterococcal surveillance isolates from two hospitals of Brasília, Brazil. Conventional biochemical tests were used to identify the enterococcal species and the disk diffusion method was used to determine their resistance profiles. Enterococcus faecalis (76%) and E. faecium (9%) were the most prevalent species. No enterococci showed the vanA or vanB vancomycin resistance phenotypes or genotypes. Only the intrinsically resistant species E. gallinarum (n=2) and E. casseliflavus (n=3) harbored the vancomycin-resistance genes vanC1 and vanC2/3, respectively. We found E. faecalis isolates with high-level resistance to gentamicin (22%) and streptomycin (8%) and both E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates with resistance to more than two antimicrobials (84% and 67%, respectively). Nine E. faecalis isolates (12%) were resistant to ampicillin; the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 16µg/mL (n=6) and 32µg/mL (n=3). Among these ampicillin-resistant E. faecalis, seven were also resistant to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, rifampin, penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and erythromycin. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis classified those isolates in three different genotypes, suggesting dissemination of genetically related ampicillin-resistant E. faecalis strains among different patients.
