Abstract This study evaluated the technological viability of yogurt with the addition of green-banana biomass (Musa spp.) considering the resistant starch (BBV) as a potential prebiotic ingredient and texture agent. Four yogurt formulations were prepared: control; 3% BBV; 5% BBV; and 10% BBV. They were subjected to analysis of resistant starch, lactose, fat, total dry extract, defatted dry extract, moisture, ash, proteins, pH and titratable acidity; syneresis analysis, instrumental texture and instrumental color. All four formulations met the requirements of the identity and quality regulation for fermented milks regarding the physicochemical and microbiological parameters. In the instrumental color analysis, in all treatments with added BBV, darkening was observed after 21 days, with a reduction of a* coordinate and an increase of b* coordinate. In the instrumental texture analysis, the yogurt in the Control treatment had the highest firmness (0.430 N) at 21 days among these treatments. Among the treatments with added BBV, the yogurt with 5% added BBV showed the best results for increasing the viability of lactic bacteria. It was found that yogurt with added BBV is a promising alternative in the elaboration of functional dairy products, adding value to the banana production chain by reducing the green fruit waste.

Abstract Free radicals are highly reactive unstable molecules, which can be synthesized in different ways, considered harmful and threatening to humans; these chemical species have free traffic throughout the human body, interacting with biological molecules and human body organ tissues. The interaction between free radicals and biological molecules is the main factor for disease development or pre-existing disease symptoms aggravation. Antioxidants are chemical compounds able to donate electric charge to stabilize molecules such as free radicals. Recent studies have proved the benefits of antioxidants intake in health improvement. In this way, the search for natural sources of antioxidants has become an ascending trend. In this field, the microbial sources are considered poorly explored compared to the numerous amount of other compounds obtained from them, especially from Actinobacteria. The searched literature about Actinobacteria highlights an important capacity of producing natural antioxidants; however, there is a lack of in vivo studies of these isolated compounds. In this review, we gathered information that supports our point of view that Actinobacteria is a truly renewable and superficially explored source of natural antioxidants. Furthermore, our purpose is also to point this limitation and stimulate more researches in this area.

Abstract The aim of this research was to evaluate the spatial distribution of bedding variables in a climate-controlled compost bedded pack barn (CBP) equipped with an evaporative cooling system associated with a tunnel ventilation mode. The study was conducted on a farm in the West Mesoregion of Minas, MG, Brazil. The interior of the animal facility was divided into a mesh of 120 equidistant points, where the bedding surface temperature (tb-sur), the bedding temperature at 0.20 m depth (tb-20) and the bedding penetration resistance (PRb) of layer 0 to 0.20 m depth were measured. Bedding samples were collected to obtain the moisture (Mb) and pH in the surface and at 0.20 m depth. Geostatistics technique was used to evaluate the dependence and spatial distribution. Through the bedding area, the tb-sur presented low variability, with 6 ºC of amplitude, and tb-20 presented highest values (up to 55 °C). The spatial distribution of Mb-20 was similar to that observed on the surface and its highest levels occurred in the region near the feed alley (> 40%). The distribution of pH was similar in both layers. The tendency of high PRb occurred in the layer between 0.15 and 0.20 m (0 and 1500 kPa).

Resumo No presente artigo, apresenta-se o método experimental de determinação da constante de Planck, uma das constantes físicas fundamentais, através do estudo das propriedades quânticas e ondulatórias do diodo emissor de luz (LED) numa maquete experimental automatizada, que contém um circuito eletrônico ligado a um computador utilizando o protocolo USB com o auxílio da plataforma Arduino. Os LEDs têm encontrado diversas aplicações, por exemplo: na iluminação doméstica, pública, nos semáforos, nos monitores de TV, computadores, para ler discos de CD e DVD em unidades de computador e em unidades de console de jogos, ou para transmitir sinais de controles remotos para equipamentos eletrônicos. O LED é uma ligação vital entre eletrônica e fotônica os lasers de semicondutor baseados em LEDs enviam sinais ópticos modulados através de fibras ópticas, atendendo à demanda cada vez maior da telecomunicação de banda larga e Internet. A automatização das medições e da elaboração dos dados dos experimentos de Física permite aos alunos aprofundar o conhecimento de métodos e técnicas do experimento, estudar aparelhos de pesquisa científica, dominar diferentes métodos de pesquisas experimentais, dominar métodos matemáticos e gráficos dos resultados obtidos e também a avaliação das medições realizadas.

Abstract In the present article, the experimental method of determination of Planck's constant, one of the fundamental physical constants, is presented by studying the quantum and wave properties of the light emitting diode (LED), in an automated experimental model which contains an electronic circuit connected to a computer using the USB protocol with the help of the Arduino platform. LEDs have found a variety of applications, for example: in home, public, in-house lighting, TV monitors, computers, to read CD and DVD discs in computer units and game console units, or to transmit signals from remote controls to electronic equipment. LED is a vital link between electronics and photonics: LED-based semiconductor lasers send modulated optical signals through fiber optics, catering to the ever-increasing demand for broadband and Internet telecommunication. The automation of measurements and data processing of Physics experiments allows students to deepen their knowledge of methods and techniques of the experiment, to study scientific research apparatus, to master different experimental research methods, to master mathematical methods and graphs of the results obtained, and also the evaluation of the measurements made.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar as variáveis micotoxicológicas e nutricionais de híbridos de milho com diferentes características que influenciam no custo da ração para frangos de corte. Foram avaliados 26 híbridos de milho geneticamente modificados nas safrinhas de 2016 e 2017, com diferentes germoplasmas, textura de endosperma e duração do ciclo. Nos híbridos, foram avaliados grãos avariados, fumonisinas (B1+B2) (FUM), aflatoxinas (B1+B2+G1+G2) (AFLA), zearalenona (ZEA), deoxinivalenol (DON), umidade, proteína bruta (PB), energia metabolizável aparente corrigida para balanço de nitrogênio (EMAn), aminoácidos digestíveis para aves (lisina, metionina, cistina e treonina) e o respectivo custo da ração inicial para frangos de corte, que foi calculada pelo custo mínimo. A prevalência de FUM, AFLA, ZEA e DON foi de 90, 17, 33 e 0%, com médias de 3067, 1, 38 e 0µg/kg nos dois anos, respectivamente. A média de EMAn e PB foi de 3264kcal/kg e 8,02%, respectivamente, e diferiu (P<0,05) nos dois anos. O custo da ração foi influenciado significativamente (P<0,05) por FUM, PB, EMAn nos dois anos. Híbridos com tecnologia Viptera apresentam menor concentração por FUM e menor custo da ração. Híbridos de ciclo precoce têm menor concentração de FUM, maiores percentuais de PB e de aminoácidos digestíveis e menor custo da ração.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the mycotoxicological and nutritional variables of maize hybrids with different characteristics that influence the broiler chicken’s feed costs. In 2016 and 2017 winter crops, 26 genetically modified hybrids of maize with different germplasm, endosperm texture and cycle duration were evaluated. The analyzed variables were damaged grains, fumonisins (B 1 +B 2 ) (FUM), aflatoxins (B 1 +B 2 +G 1 +G 2 ) (AFLA), zearalenone (ZEA), deoxynivalenol (DON), moisture, crude protein (CP), apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance (AMEn), digestible amino acids for poultry (lysine, methionine, cystine and threonine) and the respective cost of the initial feed for broiler chickens calculated at the minimum cost. The prevalence of FUM, AFLA, ZEA and DON was 90, 17, 33 and 0%, with means of 3067, 1, 38 and 0μg/kg in the two years, respectively. The mean of AMEn and CP was 3264kcal/kg and 8.02%, respectively, and differed (P< 0.05) in the two years. The feed cost was significantly influenced (P<0.05) by FUM, PB, AMEn in two years. Hybrids with Viptera technology show lower concentration per FUM and lower feed cost. Early cycle hybrids have lower concentrations of FUM, higher percentages of CP and digestible amino acids, and lower feed costs.

RESUMO O objetivo com este estudo foi estabelecer os intervalos de referência de diferentes analitos séricos em Ozotoceros bezoarticus bezoarticus de vida livre. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 54 fêmeas e 14 machos adultos, capturados no Pantanal de Mato Grosso do Sul. A determinação das concentrações de cálcio total, albumina, colesterol total, creatinina, glicose, fósforo, proteína total, triglicerídeos e ureia séricas e a atividade das enzimas alanina aminotransferase, aspartato aminotransferase, creatina quinase fração MB e fosfatase alcalina foi realizada em equipamento automático. Valores de globulinas, cálcio total e proporções (razões) entre analitos foram realizados por meio de cálculo matemático. Esta é a primeira descrição do intervalo de referência de parâmetros bioquímicos séricos em veado-campeiro de vida livre do Pantanal de Mato Grosso do Sul. O tamanho da amostra e a distribuição dos dados indicam que os valores médios obtidos são representativos e podem ser usados para a monitorização da saúde, do estado nutricional e do diagnóstico de enfermidades nesse estrato populacional.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study is to establish the reference intervals of different serum analytes in free - living Ozotoceros bezoarticus bezoarticus. Blood samples were drawn from the 54 females and 14 males, adults, captured in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul. A determination of total calcium, albumin, total cholesterol, creatinine, glucose, phosphorus, total protein, triglycerides, and serum urea concentrations and an activity of the enzymes alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase MB fraction and alkaline phosphatase were performed in automated equipment. Values of globulins, total calcium and proportions among analytes were performed by means of mathematical calculations. This is a first description of the reference parameters for serum biochemistry of free - living pampas deer in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul. Sample size and distribution of data indicate that the mean values obtained are representative and can be used for a health monitoring, nutritional status, and diagnosis of diseases in this population stratum.

Thirty-six castrated male pigs were used to determine the influence of thermal environment and reduction of consumption on performance and carcass composition. Animals were housed in two climate chambers. In one, animals were in thermal comfort (TN) (22 °C), and in the other, pigs were under heat stress (HS) (34 °C). Animals were distributed in a randomized block design, making three treatments (TN, HS and animals in thermal comfort with food consumption paired with that observed in HS (PFTN)), with six replicates and two animals per experimental unit. Data were obtained on performance and carcass composition. The weight gains of HS and PFTN animals were reduced by 40.5% and 34.7%, respectively, reflecting a reduction of 13.2% in the final weight of PFTN animals. Triiodothyronine concentration was not affected by heat, but there was an increase in lymphocyte numbers in PFTN animals. The HS and PFTN animals showed lower hot carcass weight. However, there were no effects on hot carcass yield and relative weights of heart, lung and spleen. Heat stress compromised performance. The negative effects of high temperature on pigs include reduction in feed intake and changes in physiology.

Resumo Apresenta-se uma síntese atualizada de informações sobre algas no Brasil objetivando refinar os dados reunidos até o presente, bem como avaliar os avanços sobre o conhecimento da diversidade de algas no país desde a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. Os resultados de 2015 mostraram um acréscimo de 1.250 espécies (35.7%) a um total de 4.747 em relação a 2010. As classes mais diversas em número de espécies foram Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae e Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae e Cyanophyceae tiveram o maior acréscimo de espécies no intervalo de cinco anos. A região Sudeste e Sul foram as mais diversas, porém, as regiões Nordeste com os estados do Piauí e Sergipe e Centro-Oeste com os estados de Mato Grosso, Goiás e Distrito Federal destacaram-se no cenário da biodiversidade nacional. Apesar da escassez de taxonomistas e da infraestrutura limitada, os resultados obtidos evidenciaram um avanço significativo no conhecimento da diversidade de algas no país nesse período de cinco anos, iniciando uma mudança quanto as diferenças geográficas regionais.

Abstract An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling.

O trematodeo digenético Paratanaisia bragai é descrito como parasito dos túbulos coletores renais e ureteres de aves. Esse helminto é usualmente pouco patogênico para a maioria dos hospedeiros; porém, em altas cargas parasitárias e em animais mais suscetíveis, pode causar sérios danos que resultam em apatia, perda de peso, desidratação e até mesmo a morte. O presente trabalho objetivou relatar pela primeira vez o trematoide P. bragai parasitando os rins de um passeriforme da espécie Estrilda astrild, conhecido popularmente como bico-de-lacre, de distribuição cosmopolita. A partir da análise histopatológica dos rins da ave, observou-se a presença dos vermes adultos e de ovos, grande dilatação dos ductos coletores renais, destruição e achatamento das células epiteliais de revestimento e, ao redor dos parasitos, observou-se moderada reação inflamatória. Os autores sugerem que a infecção pode ter sido acidental, uma vez que os moluscos terrestres que servem de hospedeiros intermediários para P. bragai não fazem parte da dieta natural descrita para os bico-de-lacre. Os resultados encontrados no presente estudo confirmaram um bico-de-lacre como possível hospedeiro de P. bragai, acrescentando essa espécie de ave e possivelmente todo o grupo dos passeriformes na epidemiologia da infecção por esse trematoide.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar o enriquecimento de espermatozoides portadores do cromossomo X após a centrifugação em gradiente de densidade contínuo de Percoll ou OptiPrep, utilizando reação em cadeia da polimerase quantitativa em tempo real (qPCR) do DNA do espermatozoide e dos embriões bovinos produzidos in vitro resultantes pela PCR convencional. Espermatozoides descongelado foram depositados em gradientes de densidade e os tubos foram centrifugados. Os sobrenadantes foram gentilmente aspirados e os espermatozoides recuperados do fundo dos tubos. As taxas de clivagem e de blastocisto foram determinadas pela produção in vitro de embriões e a PCR foi realizada para a identificação genética do sexo dos embriões. Verificou-se diferença na taxa de blastocistos entre os grupos Percoll e OptiPrep (P<0,05). A porcentagem de embriões de fêmeas nos grupos Percoll e OptiPrep foi de 62,0% e 47,1%, respectivamente. Estes resultados foram confirmados pela qPCR do DNA de espermatozoides e uma subestimação foi observada no grupo do gradiente de densidade de Percoll. Foi possível a sexagem de espermatozoides utilizando uma metodologia simples.

The objective of the present study was to determine the sperm enrichment with X-bearing spermatozoa, after one centrifugation in a Percoll or OptiPrep continuous density gradient, using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of sperm DNA and resultant in vitro-produced bovine embryos by PCR. Frozen/thawed sperm was layered on density gradients and the tubes were centrifuged. Supernatants were gently aspirated and the sperm recovered from the bottom of the tubes. Cleavage and blastocyst rates were determined through in vitro production of embryos and PCR was performed to identify the embryos' genetic sex. A difference in blastocyst rate was found in the Percoll treatment compared to OptiPrep (P<0.05). The percentage of female embryos in the Percoll and OptiPrep groups was 62.0% and 47.1%, respectively. These results were confirmed by qPCR of spermatozoa DNA and underestimation was seen only in the Percoll group. It was possible to sexing sperm using simple approach.

Patients with metabolic syndrome are at high-risk for development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was to examine the major determinants of coronary disease severity, including those coronary risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, during the early period after an acute coronary episode. We tested the hypothesis that inflammatory markers, especially highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), are related to coronary atherosclerosis, in addition to traditional coronary risk factors. Subjects of both genders aged 30 to 75 years (N = 116) were prospectively included if they had suffered a recent acute coronary syndrome (acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris requiring hospitalization) and if they had metabolic syndrome diagnosed according to the National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III. Patients were submitted to a coronary angiography and the burden of atherosclerosis was estimated by the Gensini score. The severity of coronary disease was correlated (Spearman’s or Pearson’s coefficient) with gender (r = 0.291, P = 0.008), age (r = 0.218, P = 0.048), hsCRP (r = 0.256, P = 0.020), ApoB/ApoA ratio (r = 0.233, P = 0.041), and carotid intima-media thickness (r = 0.236, P = 0.041). After multiple linear regression, only male gender (P = 0.046) and hsCRP (P = 0.012) remained independently associated with the Gensini score. In this high-risk population, male gender and high levels of hsCRP, two variables that can be easily obtained, were associated with more extensive coronary disease, identifying patients with the highest potential of developing new coronary events.

INTRODUÇÃO: A veia safena é um enxerto coronário eficiente. Porém, sua patência pode ser limitada por desenvolvimento de aterosclerose. Estudos experimentais "ex vivo", por nós realizados anteriormente, demonstraram apoptose (ensaio de TUNEL) em veias safenas humanas cultivadas sob pressão arterial por 24 horas. Nessas veias safenas, a expressão gênica da Interleucina-1ß avaliada por RT-PCR em tempo real, também mostrou-se elevada. Não há ainda consenso sobre a ação moduladora das citocinas sobre proliferação/apoptose das células musculares lisas das veias safenas. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a influência da Interleucina -1ß na proliferação inicial de cultura de células primárias de músculo liso de veia safena humana. MÉTODO: Foram cultivadas células primárias de músculo liso de seis diferentes veias safenas humanas (em triplicata). O meio de cultura foi o DMEM, suplementado com 10% de soro fetal bovino. O grupo controle não recebeu Interleucina - 1ß. Nos demais grupos, as células cultivadas receberam, respectivamente, 0,1; 1; 10 e 100 ng/mL de Interleucina - 1ß. A proliferação celular foi avaliada através da quantificação de timidina triciada [³H], incorporada às células recém-proliferadas. RESULTADOS: O tratamento com Interleucina - 1ß diminuiu a proliferação celular, a saber: Grupo controle (sem Interleucina - 1ß): definiu-se esse grupo como apresentando 100±4,5% de proliferação celular. Nos demais grupos, a quantidade de Interleucina - 1ß administrada e a proliferação celular aferida foram, respectivamente, 0,1 ng/mL:112±0,7%; 1 ng/mL:83,8±4,7%; 10 ng/mL:69,1±3,8%; 100 ng/mL:67,3±10,9%; (p<0,01). CONCLUSÕES: Estes resultados indicam que a administração de quantidade crescente de Interleucina - 1ß inibe a proliferação de células primárias de músculo liso, cultivadas a partir de veias safenas humanas. Isso sugere que o processo de apoptose, observado já em fase precoce (um dia) de exposição do enxerto venoso a regime pressórico arterial, pode estar relacionado à ação dessa citocina.

OBJECTIVE: The saphenous vein (SV) is an effective graft used in coronary artery bypass grafting, although, its patency can be affected by the development of atherosclerosis. We have developed an experimental study demonstrating the development of apoptosis in SV grafts cultivated under arterial hemodynamic conditions (AHC). The Interleukin - 1ß expression was also elevated in these veins slices. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of the interleukin - 1ß in the precocious proliferation of the cultures of primary smooth muscle cells (PSMC). METHOD: PSMC of six different human SVs were cultivated in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Method associated with bovine fetal serum. The control group was not treated with Interleukin - 1ß but treated groups were. Cellular proliferation (CP) was evaluated by measuring triple thymidine [³H], incorporated into the proliferated cells. RESULTS: The treatment with Interleukin - 1ß decreases cellular proliferation. The control group presented 100 ± 4.5% of CP. In the treated groups the quantity of Interleukin - 1ß administered and the respective levels of CP observed were: 0.1 ng/ml - 112 ± 0.7%; 1 ng/mL - 83 ± 4.7%; 10 ng/mL - 69.1 ± 3.8% and 100 ng/mL - 76.3 ± 10.9% (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: We can conclude that the administration of increasing quantities of Interleukin - 1ß inhibits the proliferation of PSMC cultivated from human SVs. This suggests that the precocious process of apoptosis observed in the SV grafts exposed to AHC can be related to the action of this interleukin.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is responsible for annual respiratory infection outbreaks in infants and young children worldwide, frequently causing bronchiolitis and pneumonia. We evaluated clinical and epidemiological features of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children less than five years old. Nasopharyngeal aspirate samples from children with ARI symptoms, attended at the 'Hospital das Clínicas' - Federal University of Uberlândia, MG, Brazil, were collected and tested for RSV by the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Patients' clinical and epidemiological data were also obtained. From April 2000 to June 2003, 317 nasopharyngeal samples were collected from children less than 54 months old. Seventy-six samples (24.0%) were positive for RSV, with 53% (40/76) obtained from male patients. Hospitalization occurred in 50% (38/76) of the cases, with an average period of 10.6 days, in most cases (87%, 33/38) occurring in children less than 12 months of age. Although an association between this age group and the presentation of more severe clinical symptoms was observed, such as bronchiolitis in 51% (27/53) of the patients and pneumonia in 19% (10/53), no patients died. RSV was found from February to August, with the highest incidence in May. Conclusions: RSV is an important agent that causes ARIs; the clinical manifestations varied from mild to severe and patients frequently required hospitalization; RSV mostly affected children less than one year old.

The effects of strenuous exercise before and during pregnancy on the renal function and morphological alterations of the progeny were determined in a study on female Wistar rats. This research was done based on a previous study carried out in our laboratory, which showed morphological alterations in rats submitted to this kind of exercise. As the form is related to the function, the physiological relevance of submitting a pregnant female to a high-intensity exercise training regimen could be explained by the fact that morphological alterations can influence kidney function. The animals were assigned to one of two groups: control animals that did not exercise during pregnancy and trained animals that swam for 120 min 5 days a week for 8 weeks before pregnancy and daily for 60 min over a period of 8 weeks starting on the second day of pregnancy. Seven rats of each group were analyzed for morphological alterations and for renal function. The progeny of the rats used for morphological evaluation were born by cesarean section and the progeny of the animals used to evaluate renal function were born normally. The progeny were two months old when renal function was evaluated. Fertility and morbidity were the same for both groups. Strenuous maternal exercise had no significant influence on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) but renal plasma flow was lower in the progeny of the trained group (mean ± SD, 16.65 ± 3.77 ml min-1 kg-1) compared to the progeny of the control group (33.42 ± 2.56 ml min-1 kg-1). Antidiuretic and antinatriuretic effects on the progeny of the trained group were observed, since urine flow as percentage of GFR and the fraction of urinary sodium excretion were lower in this group (1.38 ± 0.10 and 0.60 ± 0.04%, respectively) compared to the progeny of the control group (2.36 ± 0.11 and 1.55 ± 0.20%, respectively). Moreover, in this exercise program, fetuses from trained animals were small-sized (2.45 ± 0.19 vs 4.66 ± 2.45 g for control animals) and showed lower differentiation compared to fetuses from the control group. These effects were probably caused by caloric restriction, hypoxia and reduction of umbilical cord length.

One species is simulated to split into two separate species via random mutations, even if both populations live together in the same environment. This speciation is achieved in the Penna bitstring model of biological ageing, with modified Verhulst factors, and in part by additional bitstrings regulating phenotype and mate selection.
