Abstract Bacterial cellulose has been considered a potential ingredient in food development. In this study it was used to replace fat in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) mechanically separated meat sausages. Response surface methodology with complete Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) 22 was used, including 4 axial points and 3 center points, with fat ranging from 0 to 8% and bacterial cellulose ranging from 0 to 13.66%. The variables BC and fat had no significant effect (p>0.05) on hardness, gumminess and color parameters c and h of sausages. BC had a significant effect (p<0.05) on cohesiveness, adhesiveness and luminosity, and tests 1 and 2 provided the best formulations.

ABSTRACT Chronic ulcers of the lower limbs are common and recurrent, especially in the elderly population, they are disabling injuries that generate a great socioeconomic burden. This scenario encourages the development of new, low-cost therapeutic alternatives. The present study aims to describe the use of bacterial cellulose in the treatment of lower limb ulcers. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the PubMed and Science Direct databases by associating the descriptors, with the inclusion criteria being clinical studies in the last 5 years, available in full in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Five clinical trials were analyzed and the main therapeutic effects obtained in the experimental groups that used bacterial cellulose dressings were a reduction in the area of the wounds, one of the studies showed a reduction of 44.18cm2 in the area of the wound, the initial lesions measured on average 89.46cm2 and at the end of the follow-up, they had an average of 45.28cm2, since the reduction in pain and the decrease in the number of exchanges were advantages described in all groups that used the BS. It is concluded that BC dressings are an alternative for the treatment of lower limb ulcers, their use also reduces operational costs related to the treatment of ulcers.

RESUMO As úlceras crônicas de membros inferiores são comuns e recorrentes principalmente na população idosa, são lesões incapacitantes e que geram grande ônus socioeconômico. Tal cenário incentiva o desenvolvimento de novas alternativas terapêuticas e de baixo custo. O presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever o uso da celulose bacteriana no tratamento de úlceras de membros inferiores. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, realizada nas bases de dados PubMed e Science Direct por meio da associação dos descritores, tendo como critério de inclusão estudos clínicos nos últimos 5 anos, disponíveis na integra em inglês, português e espanhol. Cinco ensaios clínicos foram analisados e os principais efeitos terapêuticos obtidos nos grupos experimentais que utilizaram os curativos de celulose bacteriana foram redução da área das feridas, um dos estudos apontou uma redução de 44,18cm2 da área da ferida, as lesões iniciais mediam em média 89,46cm2 e ao término do acompanhamento apresentaram uma média de 45,28cm2, já a redução da dor e diminuição do número de trocas foram vantagens descritas em todos os grupos que utilizaram a CB. Conclui-se que os curativos de CB são uma alternativa para o tratamento das úlceras de MMII, sua utilização reduz também os custos operacionais relacionados ao tratamento de úlceras.

Chemotherapy is one of the most widely used treatments for breast cancer (BC). However, there is evidence of side effects like cognitive changes related to the chemotherapy treatment. The aim of the study was not only to summarize the existing evidence on the relationship between chemotherapy and cognitive performance in women with BC but also to identify additional consequences and aspects associated with these impairments. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression to present updated information on the matter. We retrieved data from the databases PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus. Twenty studies comprising over 2,500 women were examined and the results indicated that chemotherapy can compromise cognition in women with BC (-1.10 OR [95%CI: -1.81 to -0.74], P<0.01), with working memory (-0.49 OR [95%CI: -0.85 to -0.13], P=0.03) being the most affected among the domains. Furthermore, additional data indicated that cognitive impairment is most likely amid women with BC having a lower education level (Q=4.85, P=0.02). Our results suggested that chemotherapy affects cognitive functions in women with BC, and certain characteristics can worsen the deterioration. A comprehensive study of women with breast cancer and existing predictors contributes to optimized personal journeys, elevated life prospects, and advanced care that can also aid prognosis and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract Twenty six sweet cassava clones were evaluated in two agricultural years, in randomized block design, with 3 replications and plots with 25 plants. The harvests were at 12 months after planting, in both years. The traits evaluated were root yield (RY), dry matter content (DMC), total carotenoids content (TC), β-carotene content (BC), trans-β-carotene content (TrBC) and total cyanide content (TCy). Genotype was significant (P<0.05) in all traits. Broad-sense heritability estimates at the plot level ( h m g 2 ) ranged from 77% (RY) to 93% (TC and TrBC), while the accuracy ranged from 0.88 (RY) to 0.96 (BC and TrBC). The genetic correlations among TC, BC and TrBC were high (0.96 to 0.99) and significant, and the genetic correlations involving these traits and TCy were negative. These results demonstrate the existence of great genetic variability in characteristics important to cassava biofortification and, consequently, great perspectives in the breeding for this purpose.

RESUMO O objetivo do autor neste artigo é comparar as críticas antigas e modernas às eleições e ao voto partindo do caso específico da República Romana em seu último século. Após uma breve reflexão sobre as origens do vocabulário moderno a respeito das eleições e do voto, o autor discute as razões das críticas de autores como Cícero e seu irmão Quinto à introdução do voto secreto e os esforços que um candidato a uma eleição romana precisava empreender para se eleger. Conclui observando o quanto essa incursão pela política romana do primeiro século a.C. nos ajuda a refletir sobre as limitações das democracias atuais, mas também a questionar a atitude daqueles e daquelas que parecem se contentar mais em condenar os eleitores por não saberem votar do que em lutar pela superação das limitações de nosso sistema à participação popular.

ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to compare ancient and modern criticisms of elections and voting by focusing on the specific case of the Roman Republic in its last century. After a brief reflection on the origins of the modern vocabulary on elections and voting, the author discusses the reasons for the criticisms of ancient authors such as Cicero to the introduction of the secret ballot and the efforts that a candidate for a Roman election needed to make to be elected. He concludes by noting how much this incursion into Roman politics in the first century BC helps us to reflect on the limitations of current democracies, but also to question the attitude of all those who seem to be more content to condemn voters for not knowing how to vote than to strive to overcome the limitations of our system to popular participation.

Abstract Introduction: cell integrity and fat mass had been studied as a prognostic marker for cancer survival. Objective: our aim was to evaluate the association between tumor aggressiveness and cell integrity changes and adiposity in breast cancer (BC) survivors. Methods: women with BC (n = 114) were evaluated at diagnosis and 5 years later. Percentage of lean mass, fat mass, phase angle (PA), resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) were obtained by bioimpedance (450-50 kHz). Plasma leptin was assessed by immunoassay. Changes in body composition were assessed by the paired t-test or Wilcoxon's test. The disease effect associated with the time of diagnosis was assessed by a generalized linear model. Regression models were structured to assess the prevalence ratio between tumor aggressiveness and body composition changes adjusted for age, income, and level of schooling. Results: patients with N+ (p = 0.02) and % Ki67 > 14 (p = 0.00) show a reduction in Xc. Patients with advanced clinical staging (CS) (p = 0.02), tumors > 2 cm (p = 0.01), N+ (p = 0.01), non-luminal tumors (p = 0.02), ER- (p = 0, 00) and PR- (p = 0.02) show a PA reduction, and N+ patients (p = 0.01) show a reduction in leptin during follow-up. Tumors ≤ 2 cm (CI: 0.33-0.95; p = 0.03), initial CS (CI: 0.20-0.93; p = .0.03), and luminal tumors (CI: 0.01-0.95; p = 0.04) are related to a lower reduction in PA. Initial CS (CI: 0.00-0.00; p = 0.00) are related to increased leptin. Conclusion: tumor aggressiveness is associated with cell integrity changes in women who are BC survivors.

Resumen Introducción: se han estudiado la integridad celular y la masa grasa como marcadores pronósticos de supervivencia al cáncer. Objetivo: nuestro objetivo fue evaluar la asociación entre la agresividad del tumor y los cambios en la integridad celular y la adiposidad en supervivientes de cáncer de mama (CM). Métodos: las mujeres con CM (n = 114) se evaluaron al diagnóstico y 5 años después. El porcentaje de masa magra, masa grasa, ángulo de fase (PA), resistencia (R) y reactancia (Xc) se obtuvo mediante bioimpedancia (450-50 kHz). La leptina plasmática se evaluó mediante inmunoensayo. Los cambios en la composición corporal se evaluaron mediante la prueba de la t pareada o la prueba de Wilcoxon. El efecto de la enfermedad asociado con el momento del diagnóstico se evaluó mediante un modelo lineal generalizado. Los modelos de regresión se estructuraron para evaluar la razón de prevalencia entre la agresividad del tumor y los cambios en la composición corporal ajustados por edad, ingresos y nivel de escolaridad. Resultados: las pacientes con N+ (p = 0,02) y % Ki67 > 14 (p = 0,00) muestran una reducción de Xc. Las pacientes con estadificación clínica (EC) avanzada (p = 0,02), tumores > 2 cm (p = 0,01), N+ (p = 0,01), tumores no luminales (p = 0,02), ER- (p = 0, 00) y PR- (p = 0,02) muestran una reducción de la AP, y los pacientes N+ (p = 0,01) muestran una reducción de la leptina durante el seguimiento. Los tumores ≤ 2 cm (IC: 0,33-0,95; p = 0,03), el EC inicial (IC: 0,20-0,93; p = 0,03) y los tumores luminales (IC: 0,01-0,95; p = 0,04) se relacionan con un menor reducción de la PA. Los EC iniciales (IC: 0,00-0,00; p = 0,00) están relacionados con un aumento de leptina. Conclusión: la agresividad del tumor se asocia con cambios en la integridad celular en las mujeres que sobreviven al CM.

Abstract Emulsified meat products have a high fat content. The industry has been looking for strategies to replace fat with healthier products in order to meet consumer demands. This review aims to present studies on the use of BC as a substitute in emulsified meat products. In these studies, BC proved to be a potential fat replacer, as it maintained the same technological and sensory properties found in products with original fat content.

RESUMO Neste trabalho foi desenvolvido um biocompósito biodegradável a base de amido de banana verde (ABV) associado à celulose bacteriana (CB) e glicerina (GL), visando aplicação em produtos de rápida descartabilidade. Para a extração do amido, bananas verdes foram lavadas, cortadas e submersas em bissulfito de sódio a 1%, armazenadas em geladeira por 24 h, trituradas em liquidificador com água destilada e peneiradas. O amido precipitado foi disposto em placas de Petri e seco em estufa a 37 °C. Para avaliação da melhor composição com características hidrofóbicas e hidrofílicas, foi realizado um planejamento fatorial 23 completo com 3 pontos centrais, totalizando 11 amostras, sendo avaliada a influência da concentração de farelo de CB nos níveis 10 e 30 g/L, GL nas concentrações de 0 e 16 g/L e metiltrietoxisilano (MTES) na etapa de silanização nas concentrações de 0 e 4% em solução alcoólica. A análise de ângulo de contato permitiu identificar a hidrofobicidade das amostras comprovando a eficácia da silanização. Com base nas medidas de ângulo de contato das amostras foram produzidos os corpos de prova para caracterização contendo 20 g/L de CB, 8 g/L de GL e 4% de silano, uma vez que quanto maior concentração de silano, maior foi a hidrofobicidade do material. A análise de espectroscopia no infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR) apontou as bandas características de silano, comprovando a reação química com MTES, sendo também possível constatar a existência do amido, CB e GL. A análise termogravimétrica (TGA) demonstrou que a temperatura de degradação máxima da amostra ABV/FCB/GLcs silanizada (4%) se apresenta em Tmáx3= 310°C. Com o teste de degrabilidade em solo foi possível identificar que as amostras funcionalizadas demoram mais para degradar em comparação com as não silanizadas devido à sua barreira a umidade, característica que desacelera a degradação por microorganismos.

ABSTRACT In this work, a biodegradable biocomposite was developed, the green banana starch (GBS) associated with bacterial cellulose (BC) and glycerin (GL), aiming for application in rapid disposability products. For starch extraction, green bananas were washed, cut and submerged in 1% sodium bisulfite, stored in the refrigerator for 24 h, crumbled in a blender with distilled and sieved water. The precipitated starch was disposed of on Petri dishes and dried in an oven at 37°C. A complete factorial planning was carried out to evaluate the best composition with hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics with 3 central points, totaling 11 samples, the influence of BC bran concentration at levels 10 and 30 g/L, concentrations of 0 and 16 g/L and methyltriethoxisilane (MTES) in the silanization stage in concentrations of 0 and 4% in alcoholic solution. The contact angle analysis allowed identifying samples’ hydrophobicity, proving silanization effectiveness. Based on the contact angle measurements of the samples, the proof bodies for characterization were produced containing 20 g/L of BC, 8 g/L of GL and 4% silane since the higher concentration of silane, the greater material hydrophobicity. The infrared spectroscopy analysis with Fourier transform (FTIR) pointed out the silane characteristics bands, proving the chemical reaction with MTES, and it is also possible to see the existence of starch, BC and GL. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the maximum degradation temperature of the sample GBS /FBC/GLcs silanized (4%) is Tmax3= 310 °C. With the soil degradability test, it was possible to identify that the functionalized samples take longer to degrade than those not silanized because of their barrier moisture, a characteristic that slows down microorganisms’ degradation.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of different concentrations of Trolox® and the addition of a fixed concentration of DHA in the freezing of semen of Mangalarga Marchador stallions. To that end, 16 ejaculates were frozen in the following extenders: E1) BotuCrio® (BC; Control); E2) BC + 50 ngml-1 DHA + 30 µM Trolox® (BCDHA30T); E3) BC + 50 ngml-1 DHA + 40 µM Trolox® (BCDHA40T); E4) BC + 50 ngml-1 DHA + 50 µM Trolox® (BCDHA50T). All the tested extenders were similar in preserving different kinematic parameters, cell functional integrity, compacted DNA, and high and intermediate mitochondrial activity (P>0.05). However, sperm cryopreserved in BCDHA40T showed higher velocities than sperm frozen in the control extender (P<0.05). The 30 µM concentration of Trolox® was worse for sperm motility and the 50 µM concentration of Trolox® did not adequately preserve the structural integrity of the membranes in an extender containing DHA when compared to the BotuCrio® (P<0.05) extender. The use of Trolox® in freezing extenders containing DHA did not maximize the effect of BotuCrio®, except for in the case of sperm velocity parameters when at a concentration of 40 µM.

The use of selective barriers as resorbable membranes has become a routine clinical procedure for guided bone regeneration. Therefore, the production of membranes with a low inflammatory potential during their resorption process has become the goal of a considerable number of researches. Aim The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of poly (L- lactic acid) (PLLA) and biocelulose membranes (BC) inserted in the subcutaneous tissue on the dorsum of rats. Methods Fifteen animals underwent surgical procedures for the insertion of 4 types of membranes: COL (Collagen membrane) – Control Group; BC (Biocellulose membrane); BCAg (Biocellulose membrane impregnated with Silver); PLLA (Poly (L-lactic acid) membrane). All membrane types were inserted into each animal. Animals were euthanized after 3, 7, and 15 days of the surgical procedure. Descriptive histological analyses were carried out to investigate host tissue reaction to membrane presence by assessing the anti-inflammatory process composition associated with the membrane resorption and the presence of foreign-body reaction or encapsulation. Results The BC membranes showed a higher degree of inflammation and poor pattern of integration with the surrounding tissues than the PLLA and COL membranes. Conclusion The PLLA and COL membranes present better biocompatibility than the BC membranes.

RESUMO A reposição de cama na instalação Compost Barn (CB) compreende uma prática recorrente de manejo, porém os materiais de cama muitas vezes não estão facilmente disponíveis em todas as regiões, sendo necessária a adoção de materiais alternativos. Objetivou-se avaliar os atributos térmicos da cama à base de bagana de carnaúba (BC) para instalações CB. Foram realizadas operações de monitoramento ambiental em uma fazenda comercial situada no nordeste do Brasil. Miniestações meteorológicas foram utilizadas para avaliação de variáveis ambientais. O ITU foi avaliado como um dos parâmetros de conforto. A distribuição espacial da temperatura superficial da cama (TSC) no galpão foi analisada usando técnicas da geoestatística. As vacas mantiveram-se fora da zona de conforto, conforme resultados do ITU. A TSC indicou desempenho satisfatório e, do ponto de vista térmico, pode ser utilizada como material alternativo para cama em instalações CB. Entretanto, observou-se que a BC apresentou rápida degradação da biomassa em comparação a materiais convencionais, amplamente conhecidos. Além disso, valores inadequados de temperatura (< 45°C) foram encontrados nas camadas profundas da cama de BC, sinalizando maiores riscos de atividade microbiana patogênica. Estudos adicionais tornam-se necessários para a busca de planos de manejo que aumentem o tempo de vida útil da cama formada por bagana de carnaúba.

ABSTRACT The replacement of bedding in compost dairy barns (CB) comprises a recurrent management practice, but bedding materials are often not readily available in all regions and the choice of alternative materials is necessary. The objective was to evaluate the thermal attributes of carnauba straw (CS) bedding in compost dairy barn facilities. Environmental monitoring operations were performed at a commercial farm located in Northeast Brazil. Mini weather stations were used to evaluate environmental variables. The THI was evaluated as one of the comfort parameters. Analysis of the spatial distribution of bed surface temperature (BST) in the CB was performed using geostatistical techniques. The cows remained out of the comfort zone according to THI results. The BST indicated satisfactory performance and from the thermal point of view can be used as alternative bedding material in CB facilities. However, it was observed that the CS showed fast biomass degradation compared to conventional materials, widely known. In addition, inadequate temperature values (< 45°C) were found in the deeper of the CS bed, signaling higher risks of pathogenic microbial activity. Additional studies are needed for searching the proper management plans that increase the life span of the bed formed by carnauba straw.

Resumo Crescimento pós-traumático (CPT) refere-se à mudança positiva em algum aspecto da experiência humana como resultado do enfrentamento de adversidades. Investigou-se a relação entre CPT, estilos de enfrentamento e centralidade de evento. Participaram do estudo 65 mulheres que concluíram os tratamentos recomendados para o câncer de mama. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa cujos instrumentos foram respondidos on-line. Identificou-se correlações altas entre CPT e centralidade de evento e moderadas entre CPT e os estilos de enfrentamento: estratégia focada no problema, busca de suporte social e práticas religiosas. A centralidade de evento e as estratégias focadas no problema mostraram-se melhores preditoras de CPT. Os resultados sugerem que quanto maior a adversidade percebida, maior a possibilidade de crescimento, sendo as estratégias de enfrentamento focadas no problema um componente importante para a sua ocorrência. Este estudo apontou a possibilidade de crescimento pessoal relacionado ao enfrentamento do CA de mama e indicou estratégias relevantes para desenvolvê-lo.

Abstract Posttraumatic growth (PTG) refers to a positive change in some aspect of the human experience as a result of coping with adversity. This study investigated the relationship between PTG, coping styles, and event centrality, using a cross-sectional research design. The sample consisted of 65 women who had completed the recommended treatments for breast cancer (BC) and answered an online survey. High correlations were identified between PTG and event centrality, and moderate correlations between PTG and the coping styles ‘problem-focused strategy’, ‘social support seeking’, and ‘religious practices’. Event centrality and problem-focused coping strategies were the best predictors of PTG. The results suggest that the greater the perceived adversity, the greater the possibility of growth, and that problem-focused coping strategies are important for the occurrence of growth in the context of BC. This study pointed to the possibility of personal growth from coping with BC and indicated effective strategies to develop it.

Resumen El crecimiento postraumático (CPT) se refiere al cambio positivo en algún aspecto de la experiencia humana como resultado del enfrentamiento de adversidades. Se investigó la relación entre CPT, estilos de enfrentamiento y centralidad de eventos. Participaron del estudio 65 mujeres que completaron los tratamientos recomendados para el cáncer de mama. Se trató de una investigación cuantitativa respondida on-line. Se identificaron altas correlaciones entre CPT y centralidad de eventos; y moderadas entre CPT y los estilos de enfrentamiento: estrategia centrada en el problema, búsqueda de apoyo social y prácticas religiosas. La centralidad de eventos y las estrategias centradas en el problema demostraron mejores predictores del CPT. Los resultados sugieren que cuanto mayor es la adversidad percibida, mayor es la posibilidad de crecimiento, siendo las estrategias de afrontamientos centradas en el problema un componente importante para su ocurrencia. Este estudio señaló la posibilidad de crecimiento personal frente a la lucha contra el cáncer de mama.

RESUMO Introdução: A terceira geração de LEDs fotopolimerizadores pode ser utilizada em curtos períodos de exposição para a colagem de braquetes ortodônticos. Objetivo: O presente estudo avaliou o efeito dos diferentes valores de irradiância (IR): instruções do fabricante (IF), ½ IF, ¼ IF e modo Turbo. Dois fotopolimerizadores LED de terceira geração (VALO® e Bluephase20i®) foram utilizados. Foram mensurados o grau de conversão (GC) e a dureza Vickers (VHN) de um compósito ortodôntico (CO) (Transbond XT) sob braquetes metálicos (BM) ou cerâmicos (BC). Métodos: O compósito ortodôntico foi aplicado na base do braquete e foi posicionado sobre uma mesa de refletância total atenuada (ATR) acoplada a um espectroscópio de infravermelho ou a uma superfície de vidro para análise de VHN. As amostras foram fotopolimerizadas e os valores de GC foram calculados. O VHN foi obtido em um microdurômetro. Os dados foram analisados com ANOVA de 2 fatores seguida do teste post-hoc de Tukey (predefinido α = 0,05). A análise de regressão linear avaliou a relação entre os valores de IR e as variáveis dependentes. Resultados: BC permitiu valores maiores de GC e VHN do que BM (p<0,001). Nenhuma diferença significativa foi observada entre os grupos quando BC foi utilizado. Para BM, os grupos de IF mostraram os maiores valores de GC e VHN. Uma relação significativa, mas fraca, entre os valores de IR entregue e as variáveis dependentes foi encontrada. Conclusões: A diminuição dos valores de IR dos fotopolimerizadores LED de terceira geração não prejudicou os valores de GC quando BC foram utilizados, mas pode comprometer os valores de GC e VHN quando BM são utilizados.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Third generation of LED light curing units might be used in short exposure periods for orthodontic brackets bonding. Objective: This study evaluated the effect of the different radiant exposure (RE) values: Manufacturers’ instructions (MI), ½ MI, 1/4 MI and Turbo mode. Two third-generation LED curing units were used: VALO® and Bluephase 20i® . The degree of conversion (DC) and Vickers hardness (VHN) of an orthodontic composite (OC) (Transbond XT) under metallic (MB) or ceramic brackets (CB) were measured. Methods: OC was applied to the bracket base, which was then placed over an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) table coupled to an infrared light spectroscope, or to a glass surface for the VHN analysis. The specimens were light-cured and DC values were calculated. The VHN was obtained in a microhardness tester. The data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post-hoc test (pre-set α=0.05). Linear regression analysis evaluated the relationship between RE values and dependent variables. Results: CB allowed higher DC and VHN values than MB (p< 0.001). No significant difference was noted among groups when CB were used. For MB, MI groups showed the highest DC and VHN values. A significant, but weak relationship was found between delivered RE values and dependent variables. Conclusions: The decrease in RE values from third generation LED CU did not jeopardize the DC values when CB were used, but can compromise DC and VHN values when MB are used.

Abstract Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death by this disease in women worldwide. Among the factors involved in tumorigenesis, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and their differential expression have been associated. Differences in gene expression may be triggered by variations in DNA sequence, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In the present study, we analyzed the rs527616 (C>G), located in the lncRNA AQP4-AS1, using PCR-SSP in 306 BC patients and 312 controls, from a Brazilian population. In the BC group, the frequency found for CG heterozygotes was above the expected and the overdominant model is the best one to explain our results (OR: 1.70, IC 95%: 1.23-2.34, P<0.001). Furthermore, the SNP were associated with age at BC diagnosis and the risk genotype more frequent in the older age group. According to TCGA data, AQP4-AS1 is down-regulated in BC tissue, and the overexpression is associated with better prognoses, including Luminal A, HER2-, stage 1 of disease and smaller tumor. In conclusion, the CG genotype is associated with increased susceptibility in the southern Brazilian population. This SNP is mapped in the lncRNA AQP4-AS1, showing differential expression in BC samples. Based on these results, we emphasize the potential of the role of AQP4-AS1 in cancer.

Abstract Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease, and it is the leading cause of death among women. NORAD and HCG11 are highly similar lncRNAs that present binding sites for PUMILIO proteins. PUMILIO acts on hundreds of mRNA targets, contributing to the modulation of gene expression. We analyzed the expression levels of NORAD and HCG11 in the BC subtypes luminal A (LA) and basal-like (BL), and the regulatory networks associated with these lncRNAs. In the analysis of TCGA cohort (n=329) and Brazilian BC samples (n=44), NORAD was up-regulated in LA while HCG11 was up-regulated in BL subtype. An increased expression of NORAD is associated with reduced disease-free survival in basal-like patients (p = 0.002), which suggests that its prognostic value could be different in specific subtypes. The biological pathways observed for the HCG11 network are linked to the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition; while NORAD associated pathways appear to be related to luminal epithelial cell transformation. NORAD and HCG11 regulons respectively present 36% and 21.5% of PUMILIO targets, which suggests that these lncRNAs act as a decoy for PUMILIO. These lncRNAs seem to work as players in the differentiation process that drives breast cells to acquire distinct phenotypes related to a specific BC subtype.
