Abstract Most of the discarded plastics originate mainly from food and beverage packaging, thus the consumer's perception of biodegradable packaging must be understood. This study aimed to investigate the consumer perception of biodegradable packaging films made of pectin and whey protein isolate. An online questionnaire was conducted to assess the consumer responses. Results showed that the majority of consumers (77.3%) did not observe the biodegradability of the packaging during purchase, although biodegradable packaging can positively affect the purchase decision (71.9%). The acceptance, purchase intention, and preference are influenced by visual aspects, and the consumers preferred lighter and more transparent films, with less saturated colors. Consumers established correlations between color and transparency with film thickness and resistance, these correlations were not observed in the physical analysis of the film. In addition, a variety of applications were highlighted for the films produced, demonstrating the effectiveness of these materials for food and beverage packaging.

Abstract Objective: The association between diabetes and Strongyloides infection remains controversial. This study aimed to detect Strongyloides stercoralis DNA in the feces of patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (DM2). Methods: Fecal samples were analyzed via the Lutz, Rugai, and agar plate culture methods. PCR amplification was performed using two targets (PCR-genus and PCR-species) located on the S. stercoralis 18S ribosomal. Results: The positivity for S. stercoralis using parasitological methods was 1.1%. PCR-genus (14.13%) demonstrated a higher positivity than PCR-species (9.78%). Conclusion: The results confirm the greater positivity of the molecular diagnosis in relation to parasitological methods, reinforcing its use as an additional tool for the diagnosis of S. stercoralis infection in patients with DM2 living in endemic areas for this helminthiasis. HIGHLIGHTS Positivity for strongyloidiasis in coproscopic exam was low in diabetic patients. PCR is more sensitive for detecting S. stercoralis infection in diabetic patients. Molecular diagnosis is an important tool for the detection of S. stercoralis.

ABSTRACT Blastocystis sp. is an enteric protist commonly found in human fecal samples. In Brazil, few studies have been developed, but none of them has explored the presence of Blastocystis in patients with diabetes mellitus. We evaluated the occurrence and molecular identification of Blastocystis sp. among patients with diabetes mellitus in the Midwest region, Goias State, Brazil. Genomic DNA was obtained from 175 fecal samples (99 from the diabetic group and 76 from the control group). PCR was performed using pan-Blastocystis primers from the SSU-rDNA gene. Microscopic examination revealed positivity of 12.1% and 7.9% for Blastocystis in diabetics and in controls, respectively. Amplification of Blastocystis DNA was observed in 34.4% (34 of 99) and 30.3% (23 of 76) from the diabetic and control groups, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses and BLAST searches revealed six subtypes among Blastocystis isolates in the diabetic group, represented by ST1 (38.2%), ST2 (11.8%), ST3 (35.3%), ST6 (2.9%), ST7 (2.9%) and ST8 (8.8%). In the control group, ST1 (21.8%), ST2 (21.8%), ST3 (43.5%), ST6 (4.4%) and ST8 (8.7%) were identified. This study is the first report regarding the occurrence and subtypes distribution of Blastocystis in patients with diabetes mellitus in Brazil. The results reinforce the potential risk of Blastocystis infection in patients with diabetes, in addition, it contributes to the understanding of the genetic diversity of this enigmatic organism.

RESUMO: O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar genótipos de milho pipoca para resistência à lagarta-do-cartucho, Spodoptera frugiperda. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 30 repetições. Foram avaliados os genótipos de milho pipoca Aelton, Arzm 05 083, Beija-Flor, Colombiana, Composto Chico, Composto Gaúcha, Márcia, Mateus, Ufvm Barão Viçosa, Vanin, Viviane e Zapalote Chico. Larvas recém-eclodidas foram individualizadas para avaliação do desenvolvimento biológico e consumo alimentar. Os dados foram submetidos à análise multivariada de variância e a divergência genética entre genótipos foi avaliada através dos métodos de agrupamento de Tocher, com base na distância generalizada de Mahalanobis e análise de variáveis canônicas. Sete genótipos,Aelton, Arzm 05 083, Composto Chico, CompostoGaúcha, Márcia, Mateus e Viviane formaram um cluster (cluster I) que apresentaram antibiose com o mecanismo de resistência à praga. Os genótipos do cluster I e Zapalote Chico podem ser usados para empilhar genes para resistência por antibiose e não-preferência.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate popcorn genotypes for resistance to the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda. The experiment used a completely randomized design with 30 replicates. The popcorn genotypes Aelton, Arzm 05 083, Beija-Flor, Colombiana, Composto Chico, Composto Gaúcha, Márcia, Mateus, Ufvm Barão Viçosa, Vanin, and Viviane were evaluated,along with the common maize variety Zapalote Chico. Newly hatched fall armyworm larvae were individually assessed with regard to biological development and consumption of food. The data were subjected to multivariate analyses of variance and genetic divergence among genotypes was evaluated through the clustering methods of Tocher based on generalized Mahalanobis distances and canonical variable analyses. Seven popcorn genotypes, namely, Aelton, Arzm 05 083, Composto Chico, Composto Gaúcha, Márcia, Mateus, and Viviane,were shown to form a cluster (cluster I) that had antibiosis as the mechanism of resistance to the pest. Cluster I genotypes and the Zapalote Chico genotype could be used for stacking genes for antibiosis and non-preference resistance.

Abstract Introduction Hearing preservation has not yet been reported in patients undergoing resection of intracochlear schwannomas. This study describes a minimally invasive procedure for intracochlear schwannoma resection with simultaneous cochlear implantation that resulted in good hearing. Objective This study aims to describe a minimally invasive procedure for intracochlear schwannoma resection with simultaneous cochlear implantation. Data Synthesis The technique described in this study was developed for a 55-year-old male with a 20-year history of bilateral progressive hearing loss and tinnitus that had a mass in the left apical turn of the cochleameasuring 0.3 cm. Surgery accessed the apical turn of the cochlea. We performed mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy and removed incus and tensor tympani muscle to expose the cochlear apex. The tumor was identified and completely resected. After the cochleawas anatomically preserved, it was implanted with a straight electrode via round window insertion. The histopathological examination confirmed intracochlear schwannoma. Speech perception test revealed 100% speech recognition with closed sentences and the average audiometric threshold (500 to 2000 Hz) was 23 dB. Conclusion Our technique led to rehabilitation of the patient and improved hearing without damaging the intracochlear structure, making it possible to perform CI in the same procedure with good results.

Introduction Otosclerosis is a primary disease of the temporal bone that leads to stapes ankylosis. Hearing loss is the main symptom. Treatment includes surgery, medical treatment, and sound amplification therapy alone or in combination. Objective To evaluate the functional outcomes of patients with clinical diagnosis of otosclerosis undergoing primary stapes surgery in a teaching institution. Method Retrospective descriptive study. Results A total of 210 ears of 163 patients underwent stapes surgery. Of the 163 patients, 116 (71.2%) underwent unilateral surgery and 47 (28.8%) underwent bilateral surgery. Six of the 210 operated ears had obliterative otosclerosis. The average preoperative and postoperative air-bone gap was 32.06 and 4.39 dB, respectively. The mean preoperative and postoperative bone conduction threshold was 23.17 and 19.82 dB, respectively. A total of 184 (87.6%) ears had a residual air-bone gap <10 dB, and 196 (93.3%) had a residual air-bone gap ±15 dB. Two patients (0.95%) had severe sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusion Stapes surgery showed excellent functional hearing outcomes in this study. This surgerymay be performed in educational institutions with the supervision of experienced surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Adenomas with neuroendocrine differentiation are defined as neuroendocrine neoplasms, and they are rarely found in the head and neck. OBJECTIVE: To describe two cases of a middle ear adenoma with neuroendocrine differentiation, with a literature review. CASE REPORT: Patient 1 was a 41-year-old woman who presented with a 3-year history of left aural fullness associated with ipsilateral "hammer beating" tinnitus. Patient 2 was a 41-year-old male who presented with unilateral conductive hearing loss. CONCLUSION: Adenoma with neuroendocrine differentiation of the middle ear is a rare entity, but it should be considered in patients with tinnitus, aural fullness, and a retrotympanic mass and remembered as a diferential diagnosis of tympanic paraganglioma.

A espasticidade quase sempre coexiste a um Acidente Vascular Encefálico (AVE), devido à lesão do motoneurônio superior, provocando um impacto nas atividades da vida diária e na qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Por esse motivo é de suma importância o controle do tônus muscular, que pode ser alcançado por meio de recursos fisioterapêuticos, como a crioterapia e a Estimulação Elétrica Neuromuscular (EENM). Como demonstrado em diversas pesquisas na área, esses recursos são vantajosos pelos efeitos fisiológicos que proporcionam, porém, são insuficientes os trabalhos científicos que forneçam embasamento para o tratamento da espasticidade dos membros superiores e, evidenciem o tempo de duração dos efeitos fisiológicos após aplicação desses recursos. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho vem contribuir para o estabelecimento de protocolo de aplicação de crioterapia e EENM em indivíduos portadores de hemiparesia espástica e, informar a duração dos efeitos após submissão às terapias, por meio da análise da resistência ao movimento dos músculos flexores e extensores de cotovelo antes, depois, 10, 20 e 30 minutos após a aplicação de crioterapia e EENM. Participaram do estudo 15 pacientes com diagnóstico de AVE e diagnóstico fisioterapêutico de hemiparesia espástica, de ambos os sexos, com idade média de 56 ± 16 anos. A avaliação foi realizada antes e após a terapia, e nos instantes de 10, 20 e 30 minutos após o término de sua aplicação, e consistiu na captação da atividade eletromiográfica por meio da Eletromiografia (EMG) de superfície e da resistência ao movimento por meio do Dinamômetro Isocinético, no modo passivo nas velocidades angulares de 30 º/s e 150 º/s. Embora não estatisticamente significativos (p < 0,05) os resultados evidenciam uma redução da resistência à movimentação passiva dos flexores e extensores de cotovelo após a aplicação de crioterapia e EENM, comprovando a eficácia dos recursos fisioterapêuticos na redução da resistência à movimentação passiva de indivíduos hemiparéticos espásticos, embora, apresentem efeitos diferentes com relação ao tempo.

Spasticity often coexists with stroke due to an upper motor neuron lesion, which impacts the patient's quality of life. Therefore, the control of muscle tone through physical therapy such as cryotherapy and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is extremely important. Several studies have demonstrated their advantageous physiological effects. However, these studies have not provided sufficient scientific proof for the treatment of upper limb spasticity and the duration of the physiological effects after the therapy. Therefore, this work helps to establish an application protocol for cryotherapy and NMES in individuals with spastic hemiparesis. The resistance to movement of the elbow flexor and extensor muscles before and after application of cryotherapy and NMES was used to determine the effect of the therapies. The study included 15 stroke patients that required physical therapy for spastic hemiparesis. They included both sexes, mean age of 56 ± 16. An evaluation was performed before and after therapy, as well as 10, 20, and 30 minutes following the application, by means of surface electromyography (EMG). The resistance to movement was measured with an Isokinetic Dynamometer in the passive mode at an angular velocity of 30 and 150 º/s. Although not statistically significant (p < 0.05), the results showed a reduced resistance to passive movement of the elbow flexors and extensors after cryotherapy and NMES, allowing us to conclude that physical therapy effectively reduces the resistance to passive movement in spastic hemiparetic patients, however, they have different effects with respect to time.

As pimentas constituem um dos principais produtos da olericultura brasileira. O interesse das indústrias por espécies picantes, como a pimenta Habanero, tem crescido a cada ano, sobretudo para a produção de molhos e preparados desidratados, o que aumentou a demanda no mercado por sementes de qualidade. O autor teve, através desta pesquisa, por objetivo avaliar os efeitos das épocas de colheita das sementes e da secagem na qualidade das sementes de pimenta Habanero Yellow. Foram utilizadas sementes extraídas de frutos em quatro épocas de colheita (E1 - 50, E2 - 60, E3 - 67 e E4 - 67 DAA e mantidos em repouso por 7 dias após a colheita). As sementes extraídas dos frutos em diferentes épocas de colheita foram submetidas a quatro métodos de secagem: secagem artificial, aos 45 °C, até 8% de teor de água; secagem artificial, aos 35 °C, até 20% de teor de água, seguida de secagem aos 45 °C, até 8% de teor de água; secagem artificial, aos 35 °C, até 8% de teor de água; e secagem natural à sombra até 8% de teor de água). A qualidade fisiológica das sementes antes da secagem foi avaliada por meio dos testes de germinação, emergência e envelhecimento acelerado, além da análise das isoenzimas esterase, superóxido dismutase, peroxidase, malato desidrogenase, álcool desidrogenase e da endo-β-mananase. Após a secagem, a qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada por meio dos testes de germinação, emergência e deterioração controlada. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes é máxima aos 67 DAA, quando os frutos estão completamente maduros. Maiores valores de germinação e vigor são observados em sementes secadas aos 35 ºC.

Peppers are widely grown in Brazilian horticulture. The interest of food industries in spicy species, such as 'Habanero' pepper, has steadily increased, especially for producing sauces and dehydrated condiments. Consequently, industrial demand for quality seeds has risen considerably. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of seed harvest timing and drying on the quality of 'Habanero Yellow' pepper seeds. The seeds were harvested from fruits at four different times (E1 - 50; E2 - 60 ; E3 - 67 ; E4 - 67 days after anthesis-DAA) and were stored for 7 days after harvesting. These seeds were submitted to four drying methods: artificial drying at 45 ºC until 8% water content; artificial drying at 35 ºC until 20% water content followed by drying at 45 ºC until 8% water content; artificial drying at 35 ºC until 8% water content; and natural drying under shade until 8% water content. The physiological quality of seeds before drying was evaluated from germination, emergence and accelerated aging tests, besides isozymes analyses (esterase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, malate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase and endo-β-mannanase). After drying, the physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated from germination, emergence and controlled deterioration tests. The highest physiological quality of the seeds was at 67 DAA, when the fruits were completely ripe. The highest values for germination and vigor were observed for seeds dried at 35 ºC.

Este estudo investigou os lugares favoritos, os lugares evitados e os afetos a eles relacionados como exemplos de estratégias de regulação das emoções. Um total de 340 participantes (169 homens e 171 mulheres), com idades entre 60 e 90 anos, residentes em Brasília e Natal, responderam individualmente a uma entrevista semi-estruturada, indicando os lugares favoritos quando se sentem alegres e quando não se sentem alegres, os lugares evitados e as razões para tais escolhas. Os resultados apontam preferência por ambientes facilitadores de interação social quando se sentem alegres e, em seguida, a sua própria casa. Essas preferências se invertem, quando não se sentem alegres, sendo indicado também que lugares agitados e cheios de estimulação são evitados. Foram encontradas mais similaridades do que diferenças quanto ao local de residência e poucas diferenças quanto ao gênero. Os resultados são discutidos em termos da perspectiva do curso de vida, bem como da influência recíproca pessoa versus ambiente.

This study investigated the favorite and the avoided places, as well as the affects related to them as examples of environmental strategies of emotional regulation. A total of 340 participants (169 male and 171 female), between 60 to 90 years old, living in two Brazilian capitals, Brasília and Natal, responded individually to a semi-structured interview about their favorite places when they are happy and unhappy, the places they avoid and the reasons for these choices. The results point out to preferences, when they are happy, for environments that allow for social interaction and, next, for their own homes. When the respondents are not happy, the order of those preferences is reverse, and they refer also to places that are agitated and full of stimulation as avoided. It was found more similarities than differences with respect to place of residence, and few differences regarding to gender. Results are discussed in terms of the lifespan perspective as well as the reciprocal influence between person versus environment.
