ABSTRACT Introduction: Titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) is a fluoride compound that, when is applied over enamel, promotes a protection against demineralization through a titanium dioxide (TiO2) acid-resistant coat. Objectives: This study sought to verify the hypothesis that a single application of 4% TiF4 increases the resistance of enamel to dental demineralization in orthodontic patients. Materials and Methods: This controlled clinical trial followed CONSORT guidelines and investigated the prevention of enamel demineralization, fluoride retention, and the presence of a Ti layer after TiF4 application on banded teeth exposed to clinical cariogenic biofilm. Forty premolars were divided into a control group (CG; n = 20) and a test group (TG; n = 20). Teeth from both groups received prophylaxis and orthodontic bands with a cariogenic locus. In the TG, all teeth additionally underwent aqueous 4% TiF4 solution application after prophylaxis before being banded. After one month, teeth from both groups were extracted and prepared to assess the microhardness, fluoride retention, and evaluation of the Ti coating over the enamel surface. All data were analyzed with a paired Student’s t-test (p<0.05). Results: Enamel microhardness and fluoride uptake were higher in TG than in CG, while the Ti layer could be seen over TG teeth that received TiF4 application. Conclusion: Under clinical circumstances, the 4% aqueous TiF4 solution was effective in preventing enamel mineral loss through increasing the enamel resistance to dental demineralization, enhancing its microhardness and fluoride uptake, and forming a Ti coat.

RESUMO Introdução: O tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) é um composto fluoretado que, quando aplicado sobre o esmalte dentário, promove uma proteção contra desmineralização, por meio da formação de uma camada ácido-resistente de dióxido de titânio (TiO2). Objetivos: O presente estudo buscou verificar a hipótese de que uma única aplicação de TiF4 a 4% aumenta a resistência do esmalte dentário à desmineralização, em pacientes ortodônticos. Material e Métodos: Esse ensaio clínico controlado seguiu as diretrizes do CONSORT e investigou a prevenção da desmineralização do esmalte, retenção de flúor e a presença de uma camada de titânio após a aplicação do TiF4 em dentes bandados expostos ao biofilme cariogênico clínico. Quarenta pré-molares foram divididos em dois grupos: controle (GC; n = 20) e teste (GT; n = 20). Dentes de ambos os grupos receberam profilaxia e bandas ortodônticas com nicho cariogênico. No GT, todos os dentes também foram submetidos a aplicação de solução aquosa de TiF4 4 após profilaxia, antes de serem bandados. Após um mês, os dentes de ambos os grupos foram extraídos e preparados para avaliar a microdureza, retenção de flúor e avaliação da camada de titânio sobre a superfície do esmalte. Todos os dados foram analisados pelo teste t pareado (p<0,05). Resultados: A microdureza do esmalte e a absorção de flúor foram mais elevadas no GT do que no GC, enquanto uma camada de titânio pôde ser observada sobre os dentes do GT, que receberam aplicação TiF4. Conclusão: Em circunstâncias clínicas, a solução de TiF4 a 4% foi eficaz na prevenção da perda mineral do esmalte, por meio do aumento da resistência à desmineralização dentária, aumentando sua microdureza e absorção de flúor, e formando uma camada protetora de titânio.

Por fazer parte de inúmeros compostos e estar diretamente relacionado com a capacidade fotossintética das plantas, o nitrogênio (N) pode influenciar significativamente na produção e enraizamento de estacas. Com base nesse contexto, o trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de doses crescentes de N na produtividade, capacidade e velocidade de enraizamento das miniestacas produzidas de minicepas do clone híbrido de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla (I-224), além da qualidade das mudas formadas. O presente trabalho foi realizado no viveiro de mudas clonais de Eucalyptus, em minijardim de leito de areia da FAEF - Garça - SP. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com 4 repetições, sendo os tratamentos constituídos por 5 doses de nitrogênio diferentes na solução nutritiva (0; 80; 160; 240 e 320 mgL-1). As variáveis analisadas foram: número de estacas produzidas, índice de produtividade, enraizamento das estacas produzidas e determinação da massa seca das mudas. A dose de nitrogênio aplicada no minijardim influenciou a produção de estacas, apresentando comportamento quadrático, atingindo a produção máxima (13,1 estacas cepa-1 mês-1) com a dose estimada de 129 mg L-1. O percentual de enraizamento apresentou comportamento linear crescente. A dose que proporcionou o maior índice de produtividade do minijardim foi de 194 mg L-1. A dose de nitrogênio aplicada no minijardim influenciou significativamente na velocidade de enraizamento, e o acúmulo de matéria seca das mudas formadas.

For being part of innumerable compounds and being directly related with the photosynthetic capacity of plants, Nitrogen (N) can significantly influence the production and rooting of cuttings. On the basis of this context, the work aimed to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of N in the productivity, capacity and speed of rooting mini-cuttings produced from mini-stumps of hybrid clones of Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla (I-224), beyond the quality of the formed changes. The present work was carried through in nursery seedlings of Eucalyptus, in a mini-garden of sand stream bed of FAEF, in Garça, São Paulo state. The used experimental delineation was complete randomized design with 4 replications, being the treatments consisted of 5 different doses of Nitrogen in nutritional solution (0; 80; 160; 240 and 320 mg L-1). The variables analyzed were: number of cuttings produced, the productivity index, rooting of cuttings produced and determination of the dry mass of seedlings. The dose of nitrogen applied in the mini-garden influenced the production of stakes, with a quadratic, reaching maximum production (13,1 stakes strain-1 month-1) with the estimated dose of 129 mg L-1.The percentage of rooting presented increasing linear behavior. The dose that provided the biggest index of productivity of the mini-garden was of 194 mg L-1. The dose of nitrogen applied in the mini-garden influenced the rooting significantly and the dry mass of formed seedlings.

O uso de plantas espontâneas do bioma Caatinga como adubo verde vem se constituindo numa opção viável de produção de hortaliças na região do Nordeste brasileiro. Entre essas plantas, está a jitirana, planta espontânea adaptada às condições edafoclimáticas da região, com alta produção de fitomassa, rápido crescimento e estreita relação C:N. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho agroeconômico da cenoura (cv. Brasília) em função de quantidades de jitirana adicionadas sob o solo e de seus tempos de incorporação. O estudo foi conduzido em área rural, localizada em Mossoró (RN), de setembro a dezembro de 2009. O delineamento experimental usado foi em blocos completos casualizados com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial (4x4) + 1, com 3 repetições. O primeiro fator foi constituído pelas quantidades de jitirana colocadas entre as linhas de cenoura até a profundidade de 15 cm (5,4; 8,8; 12,2 e 15,6 t ha-1 em base seca) e o segundo fator pelos tempos de incorporação desse material (0, 15, 30 e 45 dias depois da semeadura da cenoura). O tratamento adicional (testemunha) foi de 40 t ha-1 de esterco bovino aplicado 10 dias antes da semeadura. Foram avaliados a produtividade comercial e total de raízes, percentagens das diversas classes de raízes e os indicadores econômicos, renda bruta, renda líquida, taxa de retorno e índice de lucratividade. Não houve interação significativa entre os fatores quantidades de jitirana sob o solo e seus tempos de incorporação em nenhuma das características avaliadas na cenoura. O melhor desempenho agroeconômico do cultivo da cenoura foi obtido com a adição ao solo de 15,6 t ha-1 de jitirana. A otimização desse desempenho foi alcançada no tempo de incorporação de 26 dias.

The use of spontaneous plants of the Caatinga biome as green manure is becoming a viable option for vegetable production in northeastern Brazil. Among these plants, the scarlet starglory is a spontaneous plant adapted to the climatic and soil conditions of the region, with high biomass production, rapid growth and low C/N ratio. We evaluated the agroeconomic performance of carrot (cv. Brasília) depending on added amounts of scarlet starglory under the ground and of its moment of incorporation. The study was carried out in a rural area, in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil, from September to December 2009. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with the treatments arranged in a factorial scheme (4x4) + 1, with three replications. The first factor was comprised of amounts of scarlet starglory placed between the carrot rows, in a depth of 15 cm (5.4, 8.8, 12.2 and 15.6 t ha-1 on a dry basis) and the second factor, of the incorporation moment of this material (0, 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing carrots). The additional treatment (control) was 40 t ha-1 of cattle manure applied 10 days before sowing. We evaluated the marketable and total yield of roots, percentage of the different classes of roots and the economic indicators of gross income, net income, rate of return and profit margin. No significant interaction between the amounts of scarlet starglory under the soil and the incorporation moment was determined in any of the characteristics examined for carrot. The best agroeconomic performance of carrot cropping was obtained by adding 15.6 t ha-1 of scarlet starglory to the soil. The optimization of this performance was achieved with the incorporation moment of 26 days after carrot sowing.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de combinações de nitrato e amônio no meio, na acumulação de compostos nitrogenados e carboidratos, na presença e ausência de salinidade em plantas de sorgo. Sementes do genótipo CSF 20 foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação, em solução nutritiva com três concentrações de nitrato e amônio (100% NO3-: 0% NH4+, 75% NO3-: 25% NH4+ e 0% NO3-: 100% NH4+), na presença e ausência de salinidade. A salinidade reduziu a concentração de nitrato nas folhas e colmo, nos tratamentos 100:0 e 75:25. O amônio acumulou-se mais nas plantas com NaCl, nas folhas e colmo. Os teores de aminoácidos livres totais nas folhas não se alteraram, mas, no colmo, aumentaram na presença de sal e aumento do amônio. A concentração de prolina livre nas folhas e colmo elevou-se nas plantas sob salinidade. O conteúdo de nitrogênio total foi maior nas folhas, entretanto não houve grandes alterações com a presença do sal. A concentração de carboidratos solúveis totais foi maior nas plantas tratadas com sal, exceto no colmo 0:100. Nas folhas, o teor de sacarose foi reduzido na presença do NaCl e aumento de amônio, enquanto, no colmo, foi maior no tratamento 75:25 com NaCl. O teor de amido não sofreu alterações com as diferentes combinações nas formas de N e salinidade. Conclui-se que combinações de NO-3 e NH4+ no meio afetam a acumulação de compostos nitrogenados e carboidratos em folhas e colmo, com presença ou ausência de salinidade, em plantas de sorgo forrageiro.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of combinations of nitrate and ammonium in the medium, on the accumulation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates, in the presence and absence of salinity in sorghum plants. CSF 20 genotype sorghum seeds, were grown in the greenhouse and supplied with a nutritive solution at three different concentrations of nitrate and ammonium (100% NO3-: 0% NH4+, 75% NO3-: 25% NH4+ e 0% NO3-: 100% NH4+) both in the presence and absence of NaCl. Salinity reduced the nitrate concentration in both leaves and stalks in treatments at 100:0 and 75:25. The accumulation of ammonium was higher in those plants, in both leaves and stalk, in the presence of NaCl. The levels of free amino acids in the leaves showed no change, whereas those in the stalk increased in the presence of salt and with the increase of ammonium. The concentration of free proline in both leaves and stalk was higher in plants under salinity. The total nitrogen content was higher in the leaves without, however, showing much change in the presence of salt. The concentration of total soluble carbohydrates was higher in those plants treated with salt, except in the stalk 0:100. Sucrose levels in the leaves were lower in the presence of NaCl and the increase in ammonium, while they were higher in the stalk at 75:25 NaCl. The starch content did not alter much with the different levels of nitrogen and salinity. It is concluded that NO-3 and NH4+ combinations in the medium affect the accumulation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates in the leaves and stalks of sorghum plants, both in the presence and absence of salinity.

Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore is an Australian native pest of Eucalyptus detected in Brazil in 2003. Since then, it has spread fast and colonized plantations in several states of the country. This study aimed to investigate the influence of cerrado remnants on the abundance and biological control of G. brimblecombei. We placed yellow sticky card traps to capture insects in four plantations of hybrid clones of Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis ("Urograndis") and four plantations of E. urophylla x Eucalyptus camaldulensis ("Urocam"). Traps were placed in three areas of these plantations: center, border with cerrado and border without cerrado. We also collected leaves from the same clones to estimate psyllid egg and lerp abundance. The abundance of G. brimblecombei was lower in the plantation-cerrado border, and the inverse pattern was observed for microhymenopterans. The leaf abaxial surface showed a higher abundance of eggs and nymphs, probably as a consequence of a lower parasitism rate and mechanical removal by wind and rain. Egg number was higher on Urograndis than in Urocam clones, but the number of psyllid lerps was higher in the latter. Thus, the establishment of first instars is probably a critical event to psyllid infestation, and these differences may be caused by morphological, anatomical and biochemical leaf features of distinct clones. Our results suggest that the maintenance of native vegetation around plantations is a promising management practice to promote the natural biological control of G.brimblecombei, a strategy that would also enhance the preservation of cerrado remnants.
