ABSTRACT Lettuce is a leafy vegetable sensitive to salinity, and under saline stress conditions it presents nutritional imbalance, mainly in calcium absorption. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of enriching the nutrient solution with calcium nitrate in solutions prepared with saline water in the lettuce crop. A completely randomized design was used, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments were represented by five nutrient solutions [S1 - standard nutrient solution (SNP); S2 - SNP + NaCl (3.5 dS m-1); S3 - S2 + Ca (NO3)2 (50% = 6.86 mmol L-1); S4 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (100% = 9.15 mmol L-1); S5 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (150% = 11.43 mmol L-1)] in lettuce from the curly group, cv. Elba. After preparing the nutrient solutions, the solutions had the following electrical conductivities: 1.8 (S1); 4.8 (S2); 5.4 (S3); 6.0 (S4); 6.6 (S5) dS m-1. Variables of growth, nutrition and postharvest quality of lettuce were evaluated. With the exception of stem diameter, number of total leaves, plant pH and vitamin C content, the other variables were affected by the extra addition of Ca(NO3)2 in the nutrient solutions. The lettuce cv Elba grown in coconut fiber is tolerant to the salinity of 4.8 dS m-1 (S2). In conditions where the use of saline water with 3.5 dS m-1 for the preparation of the nutrient solution is unavoidable, the use of extra doses of Ca(NO3)2 in the lettuce crop is not recommended.

RESUMO A alface é uma hortaliça folhosa sensível à salinidade, e em condições de estresse salino apresenta crescimento reduzido e desequilíbrio nutricional, principalmente na absorção de cálcio. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do enriquecimento da solução nutritiva com nitrato de cálcio em soluções preparadas com água salina na cultura da alface. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram representados por cinco soluções nutritivas [S1 - solução nutritiva padrão (SNP); S2 - SNP + NaCl (3,5 dS m-1); S3 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (50% = 6,86 mmol L-1); S4 - S2 + Ca(NO3)2 (100% = 9,15 mmol L-1); S5 - S2 + Ca (NO3)2 (150% = 11,43 mmol L-1)] em alface do grupo crespa, cv. Elba. Após o preparo das soluções nutritivas, as soluções apresentaram as seguintes condutividades elétricas: 1,8 (S1); 4,8 (S2); 5,4 (S3); 6,0 (S4); 6,6 (S5) dS m-1. Foram avaliadas variáveis de crescimento, nutrição e qualidade pós-colheita da alface. Com exceção do diâmetro do caule, número de folhas totais, pH da planta e teor de vitamina C, as demais variáveis foram afetadas pela adição extra de Ca(NO3)2 nas soluções nutritivas. A alface cv. Elba cultivada em fibra de coco é tolerante à salinidade de 4,8 dS m-1 (S2). Em condições onde o uso de água salina com 3,5 dS m-1 para o preparo da solução nutritiva é inevitável, não é recomendado o uso de doses extras de Ca(NO3)2 na cultura da alface.

The production of conductive and organic devices from a 3D printer represents a promising strategy for several areas. In particular, the synthesis of polypyrrole-coated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites can be considered an important step to produce conductive supports for 3D printing. Herein, it is reported the production of ABS samples through the additive manufacturing process (3D printing) accordingly to the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. The hydrophilic behavior was controlled by the surface treatment using air plasma for the following step of coating with polypyrrole (PPy) via an in situ polymerization, using two different oxidants: ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O) and ammonium persulfate (APS). The chemical, optical, surface, and electrical properties of these materials were characterized through Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, cyclic voltammetry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), 4-probe electrical measurement, and mechanical tensile testing. The ABS/PPy (FeCl3) composite exhibited a low electrical contact resistance and better performance for applications that require electrodes with a good conductance level.

Abstract In Compost-Bedded Pack Barn (CBP) systems, air velocity is linked with the thermal comfort of housed dairy cattle and bedding quality and, therefore, assessing ventilation efficiency is essential. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate and characterize dependence and spatial distribution of air velocity at the 1.5 m height (vair,M) and at bedding level (vair,B) in an open CBP system with positive pressure ventilation. The study was conducted in 2021, in a facility located in the Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The facility area was divided into a mesh composed of 55 equidistant points, where vair,M and vair,B data were collected in the morning (09:00 a.m.) and afternoon (03:00 p.m.) periods, during three weeks in Brazilian winter. Geostatistics techniques were used to assess dependence and spatial distribution. In both periods evaluated, there were a strong occurrence of spatial dependence and non-uniform vair,M and vair,B distributions. The vair,M and vair,B values were lower than recommended (1.8 m∙s–1) in more than 65.0% of the area. Adequate ventilation levels were observed only in the first 20.0 m of the facility, from Southeast to Northwest, because of the fan lines present.

The objective of this research was the sustainable development of pullulan and its structural and rheological characterization. In addition, the cultivation of the A. pullulans Y2092 strain by submerged fermentation on a laboratory scale was evaluated, valuing the use of industrial waste (residual brewery's yeast), RBY, and a low-cost renewable raw material VHP (very high polarization sugar). A 22 factorial statistical design of experiments was used to analyze the molecular weight of the pullulans produced. The maximum value of 1955 kDa was determined for the pullulan recovered after 96 h of fermentation in the mineral medium added with 70 g/L of VHP and 50 g/L of RBY. The FTIR analysis for the pullulan obtained was similar to the commercial pullulan. The rheological behavior of pullulan solutions is shown, evidencing the relationship between this property and Mw. The results from all analyses indicate that the pullulan obtained is suitable for the future production of biopolymeric films.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the performance of three electrochemical ammonia sensor modules (MQ137, FECS44-100, and MIX2801) in comparison to standard equipment (iPMU) under atmospheric conditions of an open Compost Barn (CB) during the winter period in Brazil. The study was conducted in Cajuri (MG) over three days, collecting data from 06 am to 05 pm on ammonia concentration, temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity in the CB, specifically at the center of the bedding area. The evaluation period was divided into three parts: Period 1 (06 to 09 am); Period 2 (10 am to 01 pm); and Period 3 (02 pm to 05 pm). Recorded data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. It was observed that the greatest discrepancy among the readings occurred in Period 1 (for all sensor modules and the iPMU), due to air saturation conditions. In Periods 2 and 3, readings from the sensor modules closely matched those recorded by the iPMU. Throughout all periods, the MIX2801 showed the most significant discrepancies compared to the iPMU, whereas the MQ137 was the closest to the standard equipment. This finding suggests that the MQ137 is a viable option for use in CB facilities.

ABSTRACT. Since the composition of honey varies with the species of bee as well as flowering and geographical aspects, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and bioactive properties of Apisand stingless bees’honey from the Brazilian Caatinga. Samples of different species of Apis mellifera L.Meliponini (Melipona subnitida, Frieseomellita varia, Melipona mandacaia, Plebeia sp.) and Apis mellifera L.werecollected from honey producersin the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Honey from A. mellifera and stingless bees showed physicochemical differences in some parameters, especially in moisture, free acidity, HMF, water activity, sugars and electric conductivity. There were no differences in color between honeys from A. mellifera and stingless bees. Honeys fromPlebeia sp., F. varia and A. mellifera showed higher antioxidant capacity followed by honeys fromM. mandacaia and M. subnitida. Flavonoids had little influence on the differentiation of antioxidant activities of stingless bees, while the opposite occurred with the phenolic content, where honeys with the highest levels of phenolic also showed higher antioxidant capacity. ABSTRACT Some studies have shown that secondary infections during the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to the high mortality. Our objective was to identify the frequency, types and etiology of bacterial infections in patients with COVID-19 admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) and to evaluate the results of ICU stay, duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) and in-hospital mortality. It was a single-center study with a retrospective cohort of patients admitted consecutively to the ICU for more than 48 h between March and May 2020. Comparisons of groups with and without ICU- acquired infection were performed. A total of 191 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 were included and 57 patients had 97 secondary infectious events. The most frequent agents were Acinetobacter baumannii (28.9%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22.7%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (14.4%); multi-drug resistance was present in 96% of A. baumannii and in 57% of K. pneumoniae. The most prevalent infection was ventilator-associated pneumonia in 57.9% of patients with bacterial infections, or 17.3% of all COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU, followed by tracheobronchitis (26.3%). Patients with secondary infections had a longer ICU stay (40.0 vs. 17 days; p < 0.001), as well as a longer duration of MV (24.0 vs 9.0 days; p= 0.003). There were 68 (35.6%) deaths overall, of which 27 (39.7%) patients had bacterial infections. Among the 123 survivors, 30 (24.4%) had a secondary infections (OR 2.041; 95% CI 1.080 - 3.859). A high incidence of secondary infections, mainly caused by gram-negative bacteria has been observed. Secondary infections were associated with longer ICU stay, MV use and higher mortality.

Abstract Individuals with malignancies and COVID-19 have a lower survival compared with the general population. However, the information about the impact of COVID-19 on the whole hematological population is scarce. We aimed to describe the 30th day overall survival (OS) after COVID-19 infection in pa tients with a hematological disease in Argentina. A completely anonymous survey from the Argentine Society of Hematology was delivered to all the hematologists in Argentina; it started in April 2020. A cut-off to analyze the data was performed in December 2020 and, finally, 419 patients were reported and suitable for the analysis (average age: 58 years, 90% with malignant diseases). After the COVID-19 diagnosis, the 30-day OS for the whole population was 80.2%. From the entire group (419), 101 (24.1%) individuals required intensive care unit admission, where the 30-day OS was 46.6%. Among allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients, the 30-day OS was 70.3%. Factors associated with a low OS were two or more comorbidities, an active hematological disease and history of chemotherapy. In individuals with the three factors, the 30-day OS was 49.6% while the 30-day OS in those without those factors was 100%. Patients with hematological diseases have a higher mortality than the general population. This group represents a challenge and requires careful decision-making of the treatment in order not to compromise the chances of cure.

Resumen El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo primario conocer la mortalidad de pacientes con enfermedad hematológica que presentaron infección por COVID-19 en Argentina. Para ello se difundió una encuesta desde la Sociedad Argentina de Hematología (SAH) entre los hematológos para informar sobre los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas y diagnóstico de infección por SARS- CoV-2, entre el 19/4/2020, y el 7/12/2020. Se incluyeron individuos de todas las edades con diagnóstico de enfermedad hematológica benigna o maligna e infección por SARS-CoV-2 confirmada por técnica de RT-PCR. Se analizaron 419 pacientes (mediana 58 años; 90% enfermedades malignas). La supervivencia al día 30 fue de 80.2%. La supervivencia fue menor en aquellos que requirieron internación (74.2%), cuidados intensivos (46.6%) y asistencia respiratoria mecánica (36.8%). Entre los trasplantados alogénicos la supervivencia fue 70.3%. Los factores vinculados a la supervivencia global fueron las comorbilidades, el estado de la enfermedad al momento de la infección y el antecedente de quimioterapia. Se pudo establecer un score en el que aquellos que tuvieron un puntaje de 4 alcanzaron una supervivencia del 49.6% al día 30, mientras que la de los pacientes con score 0 fue del 100% a 30 días. En comparación con la población general, los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas presentan una mayor mortalidad vinculada al COVID-19, motivo por el cual es primordial definir pautas destinadas a disminuir la exposición de los mismos sin comprometer las posibilidades de beneficiarse del tratamiento de la enfermedad de base.

Three different microalgae species, Desmodesmus sp., Nannochloropsis oculata and Halamphora coffeaeformis were grown under controlled conditions. The resulting dry biomass was characterized by TG-DTA (thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis) and extracted with three solvents having different polarities. The extracts gross mass yields varied from 2% using n-hexane to 23% (or 74% when subtracting the volatiles and ashes) when using methanol-chloroform whatever the microalgae species. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of all extracts suggested the presence of fatty esters and acids. The extracts were pyrolyzed at 600 °C, using a micro pyrolizer coupled to a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), without and with g-alumina as catalyst. Hydrocarbons concentrations varied respectively from 92% in the better case to 46% in the worst case. The C9-C15 fraction of these hydrocarbons, potentially useful for biokerosene formulation, was object of detailed analysis. In this fraction, nitrogenous products had concentrations always lower than 0.1%. The main hydrocarbons produced were linear 1-alkenes for thermal pyrolysis whereas for pyrolysis with g-alumina, linear 1-alkenes and also alkenes isomers and linear alkanes, together with cyclic and aromatic compounds were observed for all microalgae species, but in different proportions. The C9-C15 fraction of pyrolyzed extracts can be considered as precursor for biokerosene or direct “drop in” fuel for kerosene petroleum fraction.

Resumo A relação entre os desastres de origem hidrometeorológicos e a saúde das populações atingidas ainda é pouco abordada no Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. A Hepatite A é uma doença que envolve questões sanitárias e do meio urbano, sendo uma doença do tipo evitável. Esse estudo tem como objetivo analisar a relação entre áreas de inundação e a ocorrência de doenças de veiculação hídrica, neste caso, a Hepatite A. Foi estruturado um banco de dados dos casos confirmados de Hepatite A e de eventos de inundações no município de Encantado-RS entre os anos de 2012 e 2014. Esses dados foram analisados espacialmente a partir do estimador Kernel dos pontos de ocorrência de casos de Hepatite A e correlacionados para o perímetro urbano. Verificou-se que nos três meses posteriores à ocorrência de inundação, foram registrados 44 casos, um aumento de quase 300%, no registro de casos de Hepatite A. Os resultados identificaram que todos os casos confirmados estão na área urbana localizada na planície de inundação. O que reafirma a importância de incentivo a formulação e implementação de políticas de prevenção a surtos de doenças pós-desastres hidrometeorológicos.

Abstract The relationship between hydrometeorological disasters and the health of affected populations is still hardly discussed in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Hepatitis A is a disease that involves health and urban environment issue and is an avoidable disease. This study aims to analyze the relationship between flood areas and waterborne diseases, in this case, Hepatitis A. A database of confirmed cases of Hepatitis A and flood events in the municipality of Encantado-RS, Brazil between 2012 and 2014 was structured. These data were analyzed spatially from the kernel estimator of the occurrence points of Hepatitis A cases and correlated to the urban perimeter. It was verified that 44 cases were registered in the three months following the occurrence of flood, an increase of almost 300% in the records of Hepatitis A. The results identified that all the confirmed cases are in the urban area located in the floodplain. Abstract For human/SARS-CoV-2 interactome genes ACE2, TMPRSS2 and BSG, there is a convincing evidence of association in Asians with influenza-induced SARS for TMPRSS2-rs2070788, tag-SNP of the eQTL rs383510. This case illustrates the importance of population genetics and of sequencing data in the design of genetic association studies in different human populations: the high linkage disequilibrium (LD) between rs2070788 and rs383510 is Asian-specific. Leveraging on a combination of genotyping and sequencing data for Native Americans (neglected in genetic studies), we show that while their frequencies of the Asian tag-SNP rs2070788 is, surprisingly, the highest worldwide, it is not in LD with the eQTL rs383510, that therefore, should be directly genotyped in genetic association studies of SARS in populations with Native American ancestry.

This work aims to develop a rapid and reliable method by HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS for identification and quantification of Kaurenoic acid (KA) in extract, tincture and syrup from Mikania glomerata. The developed method allows identifying and quantifying KA in complex samples obtained from extract marketed in pharmaceutical industry, a tincture prepared with the leaves from plant and two syrups purchased in the local market. The quantification was performed using standard addition calibration curve. An accurate method for Kaurenoic acid determination in M. glomerata samples was developed. The concentrations of KA found in M. glomerata were 0.19 mg mL-1 in the commercial extract, 0.93 mg mL-1 in the tincture, 3.00 x 10-3 mg mL-1 in the syrup B and in syrup A was not possible to quantify due to the concentration is below the detection limit. Since most reports describe the quantification of the main active constituent (coumarin) and do not provide relevant information on the quantification of KA in these sample types (syrup and tincture), the developed method represents an excellent alternative for agile and efficient analysis of the KA in complex matrices from simple dilution.

Resumen El uso de materiales orgánicos como materiales ópticos no lineales se ha explorado intensamente en los últimos años, debido a la facilidad de manipulación de estas estructuras moleculares y la flexibilidad de síntesis en relación con el cambio de grupos sustituyentes. En el presente trabajo, las propiedades lineales y no lineales de dos derivados de chalcona (E)-1-(4-metilfenil)-3-fenilprop-2-en-1-ona (4MP3P) y (E)-1-(4-nitrofenil)-3-fenilprop-2-en-1-ona (4NP3P), los cuales difieren en la posición del sustituyente en el anillo de fenilo, se estudiaron en presencia de disolventes próticos y apróticos simulados por el Modelo Continuo Polarizable a nivel DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d). Además, se estudiaron parámetros moleculares estáticos y dinámicos (1064 nm) como el momento dipolar, la polarización lineal y la primera y la segunda hiperpolarización en función del valor constante dieléctrico del disolvente. El comportamiento geométrico se estudió como ángulos de enlace químico, ángulos de torsión y distribución de carga parcial de compuestos, incluidos los cálculos de energía de huecos en varios solventes. Los resultados mostraron que el cambio del sustituyente CH3 (4MP3P) a NO2 (4NP3P) beneficia las propiedades ópticas no lineales de los compuestos en presencia del medio solvente, los valores absolutos de la primera hiperpolarizabilidad paralela fueron los que presentaron la mayor variación.

Abstract The use of organic as nonlinear optical materials has been intensively explored in the recent years due to the ease of manipulation of the molecular structure and the synthetic flexibility regarding the change of substituent groups. In the present work, the linear and nonlinear properties of two chalcones derivatives (E)-1-(4-methylphenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (4MP3P) and (E)-1-(4-Nitrophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (4NP3P), that differ by the substituent position at the phenyl ring, were studied in the presence of protic and aprotic solvents simulated by the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) at DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level. The static and dynamic (1064 nm) molecular parameters as the dipole moment, linear polarizability, first and second hyperpolarizabilities were studied as function of the solvent dielectric constant value. The geometrical behavior as the chemical bond angles, torsion angles, and partial charges distribution of the compounds were studied, including calculations of gap energies in various solvents. The obtained results revealed that the substituent change of CH3 (4MP3P) to NO2 (4NP3P) benefits the nonlinear optical properties of the compounds in the presence of the solvent media, the absolute values of the parallel first hyperpolarizability were the ones that present the greater variation.

Resumo O uso de materiais orgânicos como materiais ópticos não lineares tem sido intensamente explorado nos últimos anos, devido à facilidade de manipulação dessas estruturas moleculares e à flexibilidade de síntese em relação à mudança de grupos substituintes. No presente trabalho, as propriedades lineares e não lineares de dois derivados de chalconas (E)-1-(4-metilfenil)-3-fenilprop-2-en-1-ona (4MP3P) e (E)-1-(4-nitrofenil)-3-fenilprop-2-en-1-ona (4NP3P), que diferem pela posição do substituinte no anel fenil, foram estudados na presença de solventes próticos e apróticos simulados pelo Modelo Continuo Polarizável (PCM) no nível DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d). Os parâmetros moleculares estáticos e dinâmicos (1064 nm) como momento dipolar, polarizabilidade linear, primeira e segunda hiperpolarizabilidades foram estudados em função do valor da constante dielétrica do solvente. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que a mudança do substituinte de CH3 (4MP3P) para NO2 (4NP3P) beneficia as propriedades ópticas não lineares dos compostos na presença do meio solvente, os valores absolutos da primeira hiperpolarizabilidade paralela foram os que apresentaram a maior variação.

Siloxane-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid was synthesized based on the sol-gel method and applied to Ti-6Al-4V through dip-coating. The structural feature of the hybrid was subjected to Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG); its morphological properties were analyzed through scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle. The electrochemical behavior and corrosion resistance of both the hybrid coating and the uncoated substrate were investigated based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Results showed homogeneous coating formation due to the rigid hybrid network formed during polymerization, hydrolysis and condensation reactions. This outcome suggested interaction between the organic (methyl methacrylate (MMA)) and inorganic (tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)) phases, which was favored by the coupling agent (3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMSM)). The S0M (PMMA-SiO2 hybrid Ti-6Al-4V coated alloy) film presented regular topography and adherence to the substrate. Electrochemical simulated body fluid (SBF) tests showed that the hybrid coating presented better barrier properties (168 h of the immersion time) than the uncoated substrate, fact that makes it an interesting material for anti-corrosive applications in biomaterials.
