The moth Hylesia metabus Cramer is considered a public health pest due to the release of urticating hairs by adult females during periodic invasions of towns and villages, producing dermatits in humans. We reported natural parasitism levels for this moth during six life cycles in two localities in northeastern Venezuela. Pupae were collected in the field and maintained under laboratory conditions (27ºC, 65% RH, 12L:12D photoperiod) until eclosion. In Mapire, parasitism increased from 33.0% to 91.1% in the three cycles studied, with the dipterans Belvosia spp. (Tachinidae) and Sarcodexia lambens Wiedemann (Sarcophagidae) and species from Ichneumonidae, Chalcidae, Perilampidae and Eulophidae being the most common. In Pedernales, parasitism decreased from 29.5% to 16.1%, and Belvosia spp. was the most abundant parasitoids, reaching parasitization levels between 70.7% and 96.2%. A significative parasitization by Neotheronia sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) (27.1%) occurred only in third life cycle. All natural enemies observed were koinobionts, larval-pupa parasitoids. The variations in the populations of H. metabus and its parasitoids in the areas studied are discussed. Belvosia spp. and S. lambens may have potential for use in integrated management program of H. metabus.

Hylesia metabus Cramer es una polilla considerada un problema de salud pública debido a que las hembras adultas liberan setas urticantes produciendo dermatitis y prurito intenso en el hombre. En la región nororiental de Venezuela, en dos localidades (Mapire y Pedernales) y durante seis ciclos, se registró el parasitismo natural sobre esta polilla. Para ello, se colectaron pupas en el campo y se mantuvieron bajo condiciones de laboratorio (27ºC, 65% humedad relativa y ciclo invertido 12L:12O) hasta la eclosión de los adultos. Se determinó que en Mapire el parasitismo aumentó de 33,0% a 91,1% en tres ciclos consecutivos estudiados y los principales parasitoides fueron los Diptera: Belvosia spp. (Tachinidae) y Sarcodexia lambens (Sarcophagidae) y diversas especies de Hymenoptera (Ichneumonidae, Chalcidae, Perilampidae, Eulophidae). En Pedernales en tres ciclos consecutivos el parasitismo disminuyó de 29,5% a 16,1%, el parasitoide más abundante fue Belvosia spp., con niveles de parasitismo entre 70,7% y 96,2%. Solamente durante el tercer ciclo, la contribución de otro parasitoide resultó significativa y correspondió a Neotheronia sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), que causó 27,1% de parasitismo. Todos los parasitoides obtenidos fueron koinobiontes larva-pupa. Las variaciones poblacionales de H. metabus y sus parasitoides en las áreas estudiadas son discutidas. Belvosia spp. y Sarcodexia lambens son potenciales parasitoides a ser usados en programas de manejo integrado de este insecto plaga.

Anopheles aquasalis larvae are salt water tolerant, preferring concentrations between 10 and 20 parts per thousand (ppt). The larvicidal efficacy of two formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Vectobac-12AS® and Bactivec®), was investigated against An. aquasalis at salinities of 0, 10, and 20 ppt. A probit analysis was used to calculate the lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC95) for each product at each salinity. The LC50 and LC95 were higher for Bactivec® than Vectobac-12AS®, and for Bactivec®, the LC50 and LC95 increased with salinity. Vectobac-12AS® should thus be preferred to Bactivec® for An. aquasalis control, especially in saline breeding habitats.

Actualmente existen diferentes productos a base de Bacillus spp. que tienen un efecto larvicida sobre Anopheles spp., vectores de la malaria. Sin embargo, su eficacia es variable dependiendo de la especie blanco y las condiciones ambientales. Se evaluó la efectividad del producto Griselesf® (Bacillus sphaericus 2362) como controlador biológico de Anopheles aquasalis, principal vector de malaria en el estado Sucre, en dos ocasiones bajo las mismas condiciones de laboratorio, en el año 2002 y luego en el 2006. Se prepararon soluciones del producto a concentraciones de 1, 5, 10, 50 y 100 ppm (año 2002) y 5, 25, 50, 75 y 100 ppm (año 2006), en 600 mL de agua potable. Luego se trasvasaron 100 mL de cada una de las soluciones en envases plásticos de 250 mL y se colocaron 10 larvas de los estadíos tercero tardío o cuarto temprano en cada uno de los recipientes. En el 2002, a los 48 horas en 100 ppm el Griselesf® había matado solamente 0,84% de la población aumentando a 25% a las 72 horas. En el 2006, en 100 ppm, hubo mortalidades de 6,67 y 11,67% de las poblaciones de las larvas a las 48 y 72 horas respectivamente. Los resultados sugieren que Griselesf® no es efectivo contra las larvas de An. aquasalis del estado Sucre.

There are many different formulations of Bacillus spp. used as larvicides against the malaria vectors, Anopheles spp. Nevertheless, their effectiveness is variable depending on the target species and environmental conditions. The effectiveness of Griselesf® (Bacillus sphaericus 2362) as a biological control agent for the principal malaria vector in Sucre state, Anopheles aquasalis, was evaluated under similar laboratory conditions on two occasions, in 2002 and later in 2006. Solutions of the product were prepared at concentrations of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 ppm (2002) and 5, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm (2006), in 600 mL of potable water and for each concentration 100 mL was poured into each of six 250 mL plastic recipients. Ten late third or early fourth instar larvae were then placed into each recipient. In 2002, after 48 hours in 100 ppm Griselesf® had only killed 0,84% of the population, rising to 25% after 72 hours. In 2006, in 100 ppm, the mortality rates were 6,67 and 11,67% after 48 and 72 hours respectively. The results suggest that Griselesf® is not effective against An. aquasalis from Sucre state.

Se describen los síntomas en larvas de A. aquasalis infectadas naturalmente con un microsporidio parasítico, y la ultraestructura de las esporas del mismo. Las larvas fueron criadas bajo condiciones de laboratorio en concentraciones de salinidad de 10 g/l y 20 g/l, registrándose diariamente la mortalidad y la fecha del cambio de estadío de las mismas. Las larvas infectadas fueron procesadas por rnicroscopía electrónica de transmisión usando métodos convencionales con pH 7.2 y 260 mOsm/I. El incremento de la infección por los microsporidios estuvo correlacionado positivamente con un aumento en la duración promedio del cuarto estadío de 2.88 a 6.33 días en 10 g/l de sal y de 2.47 a 6.14 días en 20 g/l. La mortalidad de las larvas también aumentó en aproximadamente 50% durante este estadío a ambas concentraciones de salinidad. No se observaron estas alteraciones en los otros estadíos. Las esporas maduras de los microsporidios fueron encontradas en el intestino de las larvas. Estas esporas mostraron forma de barril y dimensiones de 2.6 x 2.4 µm aproximadamente. La reducción en la supervivencia de las larvas de A. aquasalis infectadas con los microsporidios, y el aumento del tiempo de su desarrollo sugiere que este parásito podría ser un posible controlador biológico de esta plaga. El microsporidio descrito presenta características similares a las del género Parathelohania. Se sugiere que el microsporidio encontrado en las larvas de A. aquasalis es una especie nueva y se propone nombrarla Parathelohania aquasalensis. Este trabajo representa el primer reporte de un microsporidio encontrado en un díptero en Venezuela.

The symptoms of Anopheles aquasalis larvae naturally infected by a microsporidium, and the ultrastructure of the infecting spores is describes. The larvae were maintained under laboratory conditions in salt concentrations of 10 g/l and 20 g/l of water. Daily recordings of the mortality of the larvae were made and the dates of change of instar were noted. Infected larvas were processed for transmission electronic microscopy using conventional methods at pH 7.2 and 260 mOsm/l. The infection by the microsporidia was positively correlated with an increase in the mean duration of the fourth instar of 2.88 to 6.33 days in 10 g/l of salt and of 2.47 to 6.14 days in 20 g/l of salt. Larval mortality also increased by approximately 50% during this instar in both salt concentrations. Development time and survival were not affected during the other immature stages. The mature spores found in the intestines of infected larvae were barrel shaped and measured approximately 2.6 x 2.4 mm. The exospore has a collar shaped prolongation at the posterior end of the spore. The spores are uninuclear with a posterior vacuole. The polar filament is anisofilar with nine rings, five with a diameter of 58 nm each and four with a diameter of 23 nm each. The polarplast is lamellate, and more tightly packed in the apical region. The reduction of the survival of A. aquasalis larvae infected with the microsporidia, and the increase in the development time suggest that this parasite might have a potential as a biological control of this pest. The microsporidium describes here has similar characteristics to that of the genus Parathelohania. I suggest that the rnicrosporidium found in A. aquasalis represents a new species and I propose the name Parathelohania aquasalensis. This is the first report of a microsporidium from a dipteran in Venezuela.
