RESUMO Neste estudo, biomassa da casca de Castanha-do-Brasil suportada com nanopartículas de ferro (BCB-NPsFe) foi utilizada para a descoloração do corante rodamina B (RdB) via reação catalítica de Fenton. A maior taxa de descoloração foi de 94,5% obtida nas condições: solução contendo 20 mg/L de RdB, 1,0 g/L de BCB-NPsFe, 200 mM de H2O2, pH 4,0, temperatura de 45 °C e tempo de reação de 240 minutos. A taxa de mineralização da RdB nessas mesmas condições foi de 61,3%. Por meio da equação de Arrhenius a energia de ativação da descoloração da RdB foi estimada em 36,25 kJ/mol, um valor baixo se comparado a outros estudos. A reutilização da BCB-NPsFe em cinco ciclos de descoloração mostrou que a descoloração da RdB não foi afetada. A BCB-NPsFe também foi eficiente na descoloração dos corantes verde Malaquita (97,1%), violeta cristal (87,0%), preto reativo B (91,2%) e vermelho reativo 239 (89,1%). Estes resultados indicaram que a BCB-NPsFe pode ser uma alternativa econômica e ambientalmente sustentável para o tratamento de águas residuárias contendo corantes.

ABSTRACT In this study, Brazil nutshell biomass supported with iron nanoparticles (BCB-NPsFe) was used to decolorize the dye Rhodamine B (RdB) using Fenton catalytic reaction. Higher discoloration rate was 94.3% obtained at the condition: solution containing 20 mg/L RdB, 1.0 g/L BCB-NPsFe, 200 mM H2O2, pH 4.0, temperature of 45 °C, and reaction time of 240 minutes. The mineralization rate of RdB under these same conditions was 61.3%. Using the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy of RdB decolorization was estimated at 36.25 kJ/mol, a low value compared to other studies. The reusability of BCB-NPsFe in five decolorization cycles showed that the RdB decolorization was not affected. BCB-NPsFe also efficiently decolorized Malachite green (97.1%), crystal violet (87.0%), reactive black B (91.2%), and reactive red 239 (89.1%). These results indicated that BCB-NPsFe could be an economical and eco-friendly treatment strategy for wastewater containing dyes.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar os compostos fenólicos e a capacidade antioxidante da semente e da torta da semente de faveleira. Os perfis fenólicos foram avaliados por cromatografia líquida de ultra alta eficiência. Além disso, o conteúdo fenólico total e a eliminação do radical DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) foram avaliados. A torta e a semente de faveleira são fontes de compostos fenólicos naturais para dieta humana e possuem potente atividade antioxidante. O ácido gálico foi o composto fenólico predominante na semente e na torta. O estudo mostrou que a torta e a semente de faveleira podem ser consideradas alimentos funcionais e de interesse potencial para a indústria de alimentos.

Abstract The objective of the present study was to assess the phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of faveleira seed and press cake extracts. Phenolic profiles were assessed by Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC). Furthermore, the Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging were evaluated. The faveleira seed and press cake extracts are sources of natural phenolic compounds in human diet and have potent antioxidant activity. Gallic acid was the predominant phenolic compound in seed and press cake extracts. The study showed that faveleira seed and press cake extracts can be considered functional foods as well as a potential interest to the food industry.

Resumo Uma das mais importantes classes de moléculas nutricionais é a dos compostos oleaginosos, a qual inclui especialmente os óleos-lipídeos, os carotenoides e os ácidos graxos. Esses compostos apresentam um vasto campo de aplicações industriais pela habilidade de atuarem como fonte de energia para o corpo humano, antioxidantes e agentes metabólicos. Sendo assim, a indústria de alimentos, focando principalmente na suplementação de alimentos, está sempre procurando novas fontes deles. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo avaliou a produção simultânea de lipídeos totais, carotenoides e ácidos graxos pela levedura Rhodotorula mucilaginosa CCT3892, utilizando melaço de cana-de-açúcar como fonte de carbono. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o cultivo da levedura em meio contendo melaço (MC) produziu o mesmo teor de lipídeos totais e carotenoides (16,50% ± 0,68% e 0,053 ± 0,001 mg g-1, respectivamente) quando comparado com o produzido em meio sintéticos (SC) (15,36% ± 1,36% e 0,051 ± 0,001 mg g-1 0,005). Sobre a síntese de ácidos graxos, o cultivo de MC gerou o perfil mais interessante, uma vez que este apresentou um conteúdo majoritário de ácido oleico (74,05%), um composto insaturado com alto valor nutricional. O cultivo conduzido com melaço e suplementação de extrato de levedura (MYEC) não mostrou aumento na produção microbiana de óleos, o que indica que nessa condição prevaleceram outras formas de metabolização do substrato pelas células da levedura, como foi confirmado pelo estudo da cinética microbiana.

Abstract One of the most important classes of nutritional biomolecules is the oleaginous compounds group, which specially includes the oil-lipids, the carotenoids and the fatty acids. These biocompounds present a wide range of industrial applications because their ability to act as an energy source, antioxidants and metabolic agents for the human body. Therefore, the food industry, mainly focusing on food supplementation, is always searching for new sources of them. In this context, the present study evaluated the total lipids, carotenoids and fatty acids simultaneous production by the Rhodotorula mucilaginosa CCT3892 yeast, using residual sugarcane molasses as carbon source. The results obtained demonstrated that the cultivation of yeast in molasses medium (MC) produced the same content of total lipids and carotenoids (16.50% ± 0.68% and 0.053 ± 0.001 mg g-1, respectively) as the obtained from a synthetic medium (SC) (15.36% ± 1.36% and 0.051 ± 0.001 mg g-1 0.005). Concerning the fatty acids biosynthesis, the MC cultivation generated the most interesting profile once it presented a greater content of oleic acid (74.05%), an unsaturated compound with high nutritional value. The cultivation carried out with the molasses and yeast extract supplementation (MYEC) did not provide an improvement in microbial oil production, what indicated that in this condition there was a predominance of others sorts of substrate metabolization by the yeast cells, as confirmed by the microbial kinetics study.

Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most widely used polymers in the world, having a wide applicability. PS can be used in pure or modified forms, and the commercial materials most used for modifications are non-renewable and have high costs. For this reason, studies have been carried in order to evaluate renewable components application such as vegetable oils, for this purpose. In this context, different materials have been prepared from styrene (STY) and the common fatty oleic acid (FA) modified with allyl alcohol through esterification in acid catalysis. The allyl oleate (AOL) was obtained with yield of 89% (w/w) and it was submitted to a reaction with styrene at variable concentrations. The copolymers (PS-AOL) were obtained and characterized by conventional techniques. The results indicated that the copolymerization occurred. Therefore, the proposed methodology allows the compatibilization between a renewable matrix and PS for the new materials obtaining.

ABSTRACT Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii. These fungi are known to thrive in desert climate. Fungi produce infectious arthroconidia in soil, they are aerosolized in the air and when inhaled by humans, usually cause infections such as pneumonia. The first cases of coccidioidomycosis in Brazil were reported in 1978. Since then, there have been other reports mainly from desert regions of Northeastern Brazil. The present report describes three cases of coccidioidomycosis on male farmers from Serra Talhada county, Pernambuco State, who developed pneumonia and were subsequently diagnosed with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. These three farmers were successfully treated with oral fluconazole. They reported having hunted armadillos in a rural and arid area of Pernambuco State. Armadillos are known to be carriers of Coccidioides. This is the first report of infection caused by Coccidioides in Pernambuco State, Brazil.

RESUMORelato de caso de paciente masculino de 45 anos, agricultor, residente na zona da mata do Estado de Pernambuco, diagnosticado com HIV em 1999 e em uso de ARV. Em 2005 foi registrada a primeira ocorrência de LV através do diagnóstico parasitológico a partir do aspirado da medula óssea. À admissão no hospital apresentava-se com febre, hepatoesplenomegalia, perda de peso e diarréia. Desde então houve a ocorrência de mais sete episódios de LV, tendo ocorrido em media, um evento a cada ano (2005-2012 exceto em 2008). O paciente apresentou, em 2011, um quadro cutâneo disseminado, sendo realizada biopsia de pele que evidenciou formas amastigotas de Leishmania no exame histopatológico. Em 2005, o tratamento foi realizado com antimoniato de N-metil-glucamina e anfotericina B desoxicolato, mas desde 2006, devido à toxicidade, o medicamento de escolha foi a anfotericina B lipossomal. Como recomendado pelo Ministério da Saúde, esse relato reforça a necessidade de que os casos de HIV residentes em área endêmica de LV deverão ter inserido em seu protocolo de acompanhamento essa parasitose, principalmente após o primeiro episódio.

SUMMARYReport of a 45-year-old male farmer, a resident in the forest zone of Pernambuco, who was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in 1999 and treated using antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. In 2005, the first episode of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), as assessed by parasitological diagnosis of bone marrow aspirate, was recorded. When admitted to the hospital, the patient presented fever, hepatosplenomegaly, weight loss, and diarrhea. Since then, six additional episodes of VL occurred, with a frequency rate of one per year (2005-2012, except in 2008). In 2011, the patient presented a disseminated skin lesion caused by the amastigotes of Leishmania, as identified by histopathological assessment of skin biopsy samples. In 2005, he was treated with N-methyl-glucamine-antimony and amphotericin B deoxycholate. However, since 2006 because of a reported toxicity, the drug of choice was liposomal amphotericin B. As recommended by the Ministry of Health, this report emphasizes the need for HIV patients living in VL endemic areas to include this parasitosis in their follow-up protocol, particularly after the first infection of VL.

OBJETIVO: o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a idade óssea pelo método de Greulich & Pyle (1959) e o período do crescimento puberal, de acordo com o trabalho de Martins (1979). MÉTODOS: utilizaram-se radiografias de mão e punho de 201 crianças amazonenses, sendo 103 do sexo masculino e 98 do feminino, com idades cronológicas de 9 a 12 anos. Para análise estatística, utilizou-se o teste de qui-quadrado com nível de significância em 5% (p<0,05). RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: as crianças do sexo feminino, em relação às do sexo masculino, encontravam-se mais adiantadas em todas as fases do crescimento esquelético, para as idades estudadas, estando 50% das meninas no pico do crescimento puberal, enquanto apenas 11,6% dos meninos estavam na mesma fase. As idades do início e pico do surto de crescimento puberal foram mais precoces nas meninas (10,1±0,7 e 11,1±0,8 anos, respectivamente) do que nos meninos (11,4±0,7 e 12,3±0,4 anos, respectivamente). As meninas apresentaram uma maior porcentagem de maturação precoce do que os meninos (41,8% e 5,8%, respectivamente); enquanto a maturação tardia foi mais prevalente nos meninos (38,8%) do que nas meninas (11,2%). A idade óssea média dos meninos foi de 10,4±1,7 anos e das meninas, 11,7±1,8 anos, para o grupo estudado.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the bone age using the Greulich & Pyle method (1959) and pubertal growth according to the study conducted by Martins (1979). METHODS: Hand and wrist radiographs of 201 children (103 boys) aged 9 to 12 years living in Amazonas were analyzed. A chi-square test was used for statistical analysis at a level of significance of 5% (p<0.05). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Girls were at more advanced stages in all phases of skeletal growth than boys for the ages under study; 50% of the girls had reached pubertal growth peak, whereas only 11.6% of the boys were in the same stage. The beginning and the peak of the pubertal growth spurt occurred earlier among girls (10.1 ± 0.7 and 11.1 ± 0.8 years) than among boys (11.4 ± 0.7 and 12.3 ± 0.4 years). Early maturation was more frequent among girls than among boys (41.8% vs. 5.8%), and late maturation was more prevalent among boys (38.8% vs. 11.2%). Mean bone age in the group of boys was 10.4 ± 1.7 years, and in the group of girls, 11.7 ± 1.8 years.

INTRODUÇÃO: A segurança e a eficácia tardia de stents com eluição de paclitaxel (SEP) ainda são debatidas no infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM). MÉTODO: Para avaliar o desempenho dos SEP em pacientes com IAM tratados com intervenção coronária percutânea (ICP), 60 pacientes foram selecionados para uma análise tipo caso-controle, comparando um grupo com SEP (TaxusTM) e um grupo controle com o stent convencional análogo (Express II TM). Os parâmetros para escolha dos controles foram o comprimento e o diâmetro do stent, e a presença de diabetes melito. Eventos cardíacos adversos maiores foram avaliados durante o seguimento clínico. Reestudo angiográfico tardio foi realizado em todos os pacientes. Avaliação ultra-sonográfica foi realizada no grupo SEP. RESULTADOS: As características basais foram semelhantes entre os grupos. Após 24,9 ± 5,3 meses de acompanhamento, houve uma revascularização da lesão-alvo (RLA) no grupo SEP (nova ICP), e uma morte não-cardíaca, um reinfarto e seis RLA (duas cirurgias e quatro novas ICP) no grupo controle. O grupo SEP apresentou menor risco de nova revascularização (3,3% vs. 23,3%; p = 0,02). Ao reestudo angiográfico realizado, em média, 8,7 ± 3,1 meses após o procedimento índice, a perda angiográfica tardia foi de 0,21 ± 0,29 mm vs. 0,60 ± 0,76 mm (p = 0,01) e a taxa de reestenose binária foi de 3,3% vs. 33,3% (p = 0,002) nos grupos SEP e controle, respectivamente. À ultra-sonografia, o grupo SEP apresentou obstrução neointimal intra-stent porcentual média de 4,7 ± 6,8%. Má aposição do stent foi observada em 8 (34,8%) pacientes. CONCLUSÃO: O SEP (TaxusTM) mostrou-se seguro e efetivo em pacientes com IAM, durante seguimento clínico de dois anos.

BACKGROUND: The long-term safety and efficacy of paclitaxeleluting stents (PES) remains debated for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHOD: To evaluate the performance of PES in patients with AMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), 60 patients were subjected to a matched analysis comparing PES stent (TaxusTM) with an analogous bare metal stent (Express II TM) control group. Matching parameters included stent length and diameter, and diabetes mellitus. Major adverse cardiac events were evaluated during follow up. Late angiographic restudy was obtained for all patients. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) evaluation was performed in PES group. RESULTS: Baseline and procedural characteristics were similar between PES and control groups. After a mean follow-up of 24.9 ± 5.3 months, there was 1 target lesion revascularization (TLR) in the PES group (re-stenting) and 1 non cardiac death, 1 re-AMI and 6 TLR (2 surgical revascularizations and 4 re-PCI) in the control group. Patients of PES group had a lower risk of repeat revascularization (3.3 vs. 23.3%; p = 0.02). At angiographic restudy 8.7 ± 3.1 months after index procedure, angiographic late loss was 0.21 ± 0.29 vs. 0.60 ± 0.76 mm (p = 0.01) and the binary reestenosis rate was 3.3 vs. 33.3% (p = 0.002) in the PES vs. control groups respectively. At IVUS evaluation, average percent in-stent neointimal obstruction of PES group was 4.7 ± 6.8%. Stent malapposition was observed in 8 patients (34.8%). CONCLUSION: Paclitaxel-eluting stents (TaxusTM) appeared safe and effective in patients with acute myocardial infarction at a two-year period follow-up.

Os achados clínicos e radiográficos após reparo intra-articular do ligamento cruzado cranial com prótese de poliéster, utilizando a técnica over-the-top modificada, foram avaliada em seis cães. Sete cirurgias foram realizadas devido ao acometimento bilateral em um dos animais. A avaliação clínica foi realizada ao 3º, 10º e 40º dias de pós-operatório, e a avaliação radiográfica realizada ao 5º e 24º meses após a cirurgia em cinco cães, por meio da qual se confirmou a progressão da doença articular degenerativa. A resolução dos sinais clínicos foi observada entre o 25º e 68º dias após a cirurgia, segundo avaliação realizada pelos proprietários. A função do membro operado foi considerada boa. Dois cães apresentaram desgaste e ruptura da prótese após a cirurgia. Concluiu-se que a prótese de poliéster, da forma como foi implantada neste estudo, não pode ser considerada como substituto satisfatório, uma vez que resultados superiores podem ser obtidos com ténicas menos invasivas e mais simples.

Clinical and radiographic findings after intra-articular replacement of cranial cruciate ligament with a polyester prosthesis using a modified over-the-top technique were evaluated in six dogs. Seven surgeries were done due to bilateral involvement of the cranial cruciate ligament in one dog. Clinical evaluation was performed on postoperative days 3, 10 and 40, and radiographic evaluation was done at 5 and 24 months after surgery in five dogs, where signs of progressive degenerative joint disease were confirmed. Resolution of clinical signs was observed from 25 to 68 days after surgery as evaluated by dog owners. Overall function of joint movement after surgery was classified as good. Two dogs presented fraying of the implant after surgery. It was concluded that the polyester prosthesis, as implanted in these dogs, was not a satisfactory replacement for the injured ligament, as better results may be obtained with less invasive and simpler techniques.

A ruptura do ligamento cruzado cranial é uma das principais doenças ortopédicas que afetam os cães. Muitas técnicas cirúrgicas foram descritas no intuito de aliviar a dor, restaurar a estabilidade biomecânica do joelho e prevenir a progressão da osteoartrite. Fáscia lata, fio de poliéster trançado e fio de poliamida foram empregados na estabilização do joelho após excisão do ligamento cruzado cranial em cães, os quais foram submetidos à avaliação radiográfica e macroscópica da articulação. Neste estudo, foram utilizados 18 cães com massa corporal superior a 15Kg (peso médio - 19,67kg), separados em 3 grupos eqüitativos correspondentes a cada técnica, avaliados durante 30 e 60 dias. Ao exame radiográfico, independentemente de grupo, os cães apresentaram evidência de efusão articular moderada a severa, distensão da cápsula articular e, na maioria dos casos, ausência de sinais de doença articular degenerativa. Ao exame macroscópico da articulação do joelho observou-se espessamento da cápsula articular e tecidos moles periarticulares, erosão da cartilagem articular dos côndilos femorais em todos os grupos e afrouxamento dos fios nos cães submetidos às técnicas de estabilização extra-articular com fio de poliéster trançado e fio de poliamida.

The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the main orthopaedic diseases which affect dogs. Many surgical techniques have been described and they aim to relief the pain, restore stifle biomechanical stability and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Fascia lata, braided polyester and polyamida were used in lateral fabellar suture to stifle stabilization after induced cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs that were submitted to radiographic and macroscopic evaluation of joint. In this study 18 dogs weighting more than 15kg were used (middleweight - 19.67kg), distributed in three groups corresponding to each technique, evaluated during 30 and 60 days. In the radiographic exam, the dogs had evidence of moderate to severe joint effusion, capsular distension and, in most cases, lacking of degenerative articular disease features. At the macroscopic exam of the stifle joint thickening of the joint capsule and periarticular soft tissues, erosion of the femoral condyles cartilage in all groups and loosening of the suture were observed in dogs submitted to extra-articular stabilization techniques employing braided polyester and polyamida.
