Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the glue line thickness effect and its relation with the density and anatomical characteristics of eucalyptus wood. Thus, the thickness of main and secondary glue lines was measured as well as their interaction with the apparent density of elements glued with resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) and castor oil polyurethane (CP) adhesives. Anatomical wood characterization of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla was performed by correlating glue line thickness. According to normative instruction, specimens were produced for delamination tests. The experiment was conducted in a completely random 2 × 2 design factorial scheme (two classes of wood apparent density and two adhesives). Pearson correlation (t < 0,01) was performed among variables. It was found that there was adhesive penetration into vessels and rays of wood. Glue line thickness was higher in woods with density higher than to 580 kg/m3 glued with RF adhesive. There was a low correlation between wood density and vessel diameter to main and secondary glue lines (t < 0,01).

A pesquisa objetivou avaliar a capacidade curtente dos taninos de jurema-preta e de jurema-vermelha e compará-las com o angico-vermelho, espécie utilizada nos curtumes tradicionais do semiárido brasileiro. O curtimento e recurtimento das peles ocorreram em um curtume industrial e as caracterizações físico-mecânicas das peles curtidas foram determinadas no Centro de Tecnologia do Couro e do Calçado "Albano Franco". Os taninos obtidos da jurema-preta tiveram melhor potencial durante o curtimento e recurtimento das peles. As características físico-mecânicas das peles curtidas com os taninos de jurema-preta foram superiores as das demais espécies. Com base no curtimento, resistência das peles curtidas e da dispersão da jurema-preta no semiárido brasileiro, esta espécie possui potencial para ser utilizada no curtimento de peles, necessitando, entretanto de estudos para melhorar suas características curtentes e uma análise econômica para emprego dos extratos tânicos de jurema-preta no curtimento industrial de peles.

The research aimed to evaluate the tanning ability of Mimosa tenuiflora and Mimosa arenosa tannins and to compare them with the Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, species used in traditional tanneries for tanning of skins from Brazilian semi-arid region. Tanning and leather retanning were held in an industrial plant and the physico-mechanical characterizations of tanned skins were determined at Technology Center of Leather and Footwear "Albano Franco". The tannins obtained from Mimosa tenuiflora had better potential during tanning and leather retanning. The physico-mechanical characteristics of the skins tanned with tannins from Mimosa tenuiflora were better than those of other species. Based on the tanning; the resistance of the tanned skins and the dispersion of Mimosa tenuiflora in the Brazilian semi-arid, this species possess potential to be used in the tanning of skins, needing, however the studies to improve their tanning characteristics and a economic analysis for employment of Mimosa tenuiflora tannin extracts in the industrial tanning of skins.

Realizou-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar as características das madeiras de amburana (Amburana cearencis (Fr. Allem.) A.C. Sm.), bálsamo (Myroxylon peruiferum L.f.), ipê-amarelo (Tabebuia chrysotricha (Mart. ex DC.) Standl.), jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril L. var. stilbocarpa (Hayne) Lee et Lang.) e jequitibá-rosa (Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze) no armazenamento de cachaças; comparar as cachaças com amostra armazenada em barril de carvalho (Quercus sp.), analisar o efeito do envelhecimento e comparar os valores obtidos com os padronizados pela Legislação Brasileira. Para tanto, as cachaças foram armazenadas em barris de madeira e em recipiente de vidro e analisadas suas características químicas (acidez volátil, álcool metílico, álcool superior, aldeído, cobre, éster, extrato seco a 100 ºC, furfural e grau alcoólico) e organolépticas (cor, sabor e aroma). Após seis meses de armazenamento as cachaças foram comparadas com os valores padronizados. Independente da espécie, a madeira melhorou as qualidades sensoriais da cachaça incorporando, à bebida, cor, gosto e sabor característicos. Todas as cachaças avaliadas continuaram dentro dos padrões de qualidade estabelecidos pela Legislação Brasileira.

This research aimed to evaluate the wood quality of Amburana cearencis (Fr. Allem.) A.C. Sm., Myroxylon peruiferum L.f., Tabebuia chrysotricha (Mart. ex DC.) Standl., Hymenaea courbaril L. var. stilbocarpa (Hayne) Lee et Lang. and Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze in the storage of "cachaça" (Brazilian sugar cane spirit); to compare the "cachaça" studied with the stored one in barrel of oak (Quercus sp.), to analyze the effect of the aging and to compare the values obtained with the standard ones for the Brazilian Legislation. Thus, the "cachaças" were stored in wooden and glass barrels and their chemical (volatile acidity, methyl alcohol, superior alcohol, aldehyde, cupper, ester, dry extract to 100 ºC, furfural contents and alcoholic degree) and organoleptic (color, flavor and aroma) characteristics were analysed. After six months of storage the "cachaças" were compared with the standard values according to Brazilian Legislation. Independent of the species, the wood improves the sensorial qualities of "cachaça", incorporating the drink taste, color and characteristic flavor. All "cachaças" evaluated continued to be with in the standards of quality established by Brazilian Legislation.
