Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação de plasma atmosférico na inativação de fungos na superfície de sementes de Erythrina velutina e em colônias fúngicas isoladas. Dois experimentos foram realizados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado: no primeiro, o plasma foi aplicado na superfície das sementes usando gás hélio e plasma atmosférico por três, seis e nove minutos, além do controle (sementes sem tratamento), constituindo sete tratamentos com cinco repetições cada; no segundo experimento, placas de Petri contendo o inóculo de diferentes fungos foram tratadas com plasma atmosférico por três, seis e nove minutos (Air-3, Air-6 e Air-9) e comparadas com fungos não tratados em placas de Petri sem tratamento (controle), totalizando quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições cada. Descobrimos que a aplicação de plasma atmosférico nas sementes de E. velutina por nove minutos teve efeito antimicrobiano sobre os fungos Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp., Brachysporium sp. e Rhizopus sp. A formação de colônias fúngicas isoladas de sementes de E. velutina também foi inibida por três minutos de exposição à aplicação de plasma atmosférico, exceto para A. niger, cuja inibição ocorreu a partir de 6 minutos de exposição à aplicação de plasma atmosférico.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of atmospheric plasma application on the inactivation of fungi on the surface of Erythrina velutina seeds and on isolated fungal colonies. Two experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design. First, plasma was applied to the surface of the seeds using helium gas and atmospheric plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min in addition to the control (untreated seeds), constituting seven treatments with five repetitions each. In the second experiment, Petri dishes containing the inoculum of different fungi were treated with atmospheric air plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min (Air-3, Air-6, and Air-9) and were compared with untreated fungi in Petri dishes without treatment (control), totaling four treatments and five repetitions each. We found that the application of atmospheric air plasma to E. velutina seeds for 9 min had an antimicrobial effect on the fungi Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp., Brachysporium sp., and Rhizopus sp. The formation of fungal colonies isolated from E. velutina seeds was also inhibited by 3 min of exposure to atmospheric air plasma, except for A. niger, whose inhibition occurred after 6 min of exposure to atmospheric plasma.

Abstract Pantoea ananatis is the causal agent of maize white spot, a foliar disease responsible for significant maize yield reduction worldwide, especially in Brazil. In general, the maize foliar diseases control involves the adoption of resistant genotypes and pesticides application. However, the use of agrochemicals can significantly cause increase production costs, damage to human health and negative environmental impacts. In this sense, the use of biological control agents has been considered among the most promising eco-friendly technologies for sustainable agriculture. Actinobacteria, particularly of Streptomyces genus, has been widely recognized as agroindustrially important microorganism due to its potential in producing diverse range of secondary metabolites, including antibiotics and enzymes. Thus, the aim of this work is to characterize and to evaluate the potential of soil actinobacteria for P. ananatis control. We observed that 59 actinobacteria strains (85%) exhibited proteolytic or chitinolytic activity. Only the strains Streptomyces pseudovenezuelae ACSL 470, that also exhibited high proteolytic activity, S. novaecaesareae ACSL 432 and S. laculatispora ACP 35 demonstrated high or moderate antagonist activity in vitro against P. ananatis. Temporal analysis of metabolites produced by these strains growth in different liquid media indicated greater antibacterial activity at 72 h. In this condition, chromatographic and mass spectrometry analysis revealed that S. pseudovenezuelae ACSL 470 strain produced neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic that displayed high bactericidal activity in vitro against P. ananatis. This is the first report of actinobacteria acting as potential microbial antagonists for P. ananatis control. Further studies are needed to determine the control efficacy of maize white spot disease by Streptomyces strains or their metabolites in greenhouse and field conditions.

Resumo Pantoea ananatis é o agente causal da mancha branca do milho, doença foliar responsável pela redução significativa da produtividade do milho em todo o mundo, especialmente no Brasil. Em geral, o controle de doenças foliares do milho envolve a adoção de genótipos resistentes e a aplicação de agrotóxicos. No entanto, o uso de agroquímicos pode causar aumento significativo dos custos de produção, danos à saúde humana e impactos ambientais negativos. Nesse sentido, o uso de agentes de controle biológico tem sido considerado uma das tecnologias ecologicamente corretas mais promissoras para a agricultura sustentável. Actinobactérias, particularmente do gênero Streptomyces, têm sido amplamente reconhecidas como microrganismos de importância agroindustrial devido ao seu potencial de produção de diversos metabólitos secundários, incluindo antibióticos e enzimas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar e avaliar o potencial de actinobactérias do solo para o controle de P. ananatis. Observamos que 59 cepas de actinobactérias (85%) apresentaram atividade proteolítica ou quitinolítica. Apenas as cepas Streptomyces pseudovenezuelae ACSL 470, que também exibiu alta atividade proteolítica, S. novaecaesareae ACSL 432 e S. laculatispora ACP 35 demonstraram alta ou moderada atividade antagonista in vitro contra P. ananatis. A análise temporal do crescimento dos metabólitos produzidos por essas cepas em diferentes meios líquidos indicou maior atividade antibacteriana em 72 h. Nesta condição, análises cromatográficas e de espectrometria de massa revelaram que a cepa S. pseudovenezuelae ACSL 470 produziu neomicina, um antibiótico aminoglicosídeo que apresentou alta atividade bactericida in vitro contra P. ananatis. Este é o primeiro relato de actinobactérias atuando como potenciais antagonistas microbianos para o controle de P. ananatis. Mais estudos são necessários para determinar a eficácia do controle da doença da mancha branca do milho por cepas de Streptomyces ou seus metabólitos em condições de casa de vegetação e campo.

Abstract Foodborne diseases are common illnesses caused by the consumption of food contaminated with microorganisms, such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, and protozoa. Every year, 600 million people become ill and 420,000 people die as a result of consuming contaminated food. Therefore, food safety is an important issue. In this study, samples of homemade spiced mayonnaise and self-serve acai sold in the city of Araguaína, Tocantins, Brazil were analyzed for microbiological contaminants. Acai was collected from 10 stores, one sample from each store, and tested for mold, yeast, and coliforms, as well as coliform identification and total and thermotolerant coliform counts. Mayonnaise was collected from 20 snack bars, one sample from each. These samples were inoculated on MacConkey and Salmonella Shigella agar plates, and the plates were analyzed for growth. Salmonella spp. were detected in some Mayonnaise samples, and coliforms were detected in all acai samples; 60% of samples had thermotolerant coliforms, and only 40% were within the limits established by ANVISA. The collected samples of mayonnaise and acai were contaminated with molds and yeasts above the established limit of 103 CFU/g. Thus, the analyzed mayonnaise and acai samples were contaminated and unfit for consumption, demonstrating the importance of hygienic-sanitary measures in food handling.

Resumo As doenças transmitidas por alimentos são doenças comuns causadas pelo consumo de alimentos contaminados com microrganismos, como vírus, fungos, bactérias e protozoários. Todos os anos, 600 milhões de pessoas ficam doentes e 420.000 pessoas morrem como resultado do consumo de alimentos contaminados. Portanto, a segurança alimentar é uma questão importante. Neste estudo, amostras de maionese temperada caseira e açaí self-service vendidas na cidade de Araguaína, Tocantins, Brasil foram analisadas quanto a contaminantes microbiológicos. O açaí foi coletado em 10 lojas, uma amostra de cada loja, e testado para mofo, levedura e coliformes, bem como identificação de coliformes e contagem de coliformes totais e termotolerantes. A maionese foi coletada de 20 lanchonetes, sendo uma amostra de cada. Essas amostras foram inoculadas em placas de ágar MacConkey e Salmonella Shigella, e as placas foram analisadas quanto ao crescimento. Salmonela spp. foram detectados em algumas amostras de maionese e coliformes foram detectados em todas as amostras de açaí; 60% das amostras apresentaram coliformes termotolerantes, e apenas 40% estavam dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela ANVISA. As amostras coletadas de maionese e açaí estavam contaminadas com bolores e leveduras acima do limite estabelecido de 103 UFC/g. Assim, as amostras de maionese e açaí analisadas estavam contaminadas e impróprias para o consumo, demonstrando a importância das medidas higiênico-sanitárias na manipulação de alimentos.

Resumo O fungo micotoxigênico Fusarium verticillioides é o principal patógeno do milho e causa doenças do colmo e da podridão da espiga com perdas econômicas significativas. Além disso, o uso excessivo de fungicidas no controle de F. verticillioides constitui uma ameaça ao meio ambiente e à saúde humana. Assim, alternativas sustentáveis, como o controle biológico, são necessárias para minimizar os riscos associados ao método atual. Este estudo isolou e caracterizou bactérias e fungos que colonizam o estigma do milho para avaliar novos agentes de biocontrole em potencial. As amostras foram coletadas em campos de milho nas localidades brasileiras de Sete Lagoas-MG, Sidrolândia-MS, Sertaneja-PR e Goiânia-GO. Cento e sessenta e sete microrganismos foram isolados, 46% endofíticos e 54% epifíticos. O teste de antagonismo empregando a técnica de disco de difusão em meio sólido, mostrou que 83% dos isolados apresentaram atividade antagonista contra F. verticillioides. Em seguida, 42 isolados mais eficientes foram identificados a partir do sequenciamento parcial do gene 16S rRNA bacteriano e da região ITS de fungos. Os isolados bacterianos pertencem ao gênero Bacillus (57,1%), Burkholderia (23,8%), Achromobacter (7,1%), Pseudomonas (2,4%) e Serratia (2,4%), enquanto os fungos são Penicillium (2,4%), Candida (2.4), e Aspergillus (2,4%). Os resultados mostraram que microrganismos do estigma do milho podem representar novos agentes promissores para o controle de F. verticillioides.

Abstract The mycotoxigenic fungus Fusarium verticillioides is the primary maize pathogen and causes the maize stalk and ear rot diseases with significant economic losses. Furthermore, the excessive use of fungicides to control F. verticillioides constitutes threats to the environment and human health. Thus, sustainable alternatives such as biological control are needed to minimize the hazards associated with the current method. Although much is known about the vulnerability of the maize silks as a gateway for several fungal pathogens invading the developing grains, studies on the chemical properties of silk extracts and their resident microbiota are scarce. This study isolated and characterized bacteria and fungi that colonize the maize stigma to assess new potential biocontrol agents. The samples were collected from maize fields in the Brazilian localities of Sete Lagoas-MG, Sidrolândia-MS, Sertaneja-PR, and Goiânia-GO. One hundred sixty-seven microorganisms were isolated, 46% endophytic and 54% epiphytic. First, the antagonist activity was evaluated by the agar disc diffusion method performed in triplicate, and 83% of the isolates showed antagonist activity against F. verticillioides. Then, the 42 most efficient isolates were identified based on the partial sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungi ITS region. The bacteria belong to the genera Bacillus (57.1%), Burkholderia (23.8%), Achromobacter (7.1%), Pseudomonas (2.4%), and Serratia (2.4%), while the fungi are Penicillium (2.4%), Candida (2.4), and Aspergillus (2.4%). The results showed that microorganisms from maize stigma might represent new promising agents for F. verticillioides control.

Resumo O cultivo da Salvia hispanica é recente no Brasil e se dá no período de entressafra, quando há menor disponibilidade hídrica no solo. O déficit hídrico é um dos fatores abióticos que mais limitam a germinação por comprometer a sequência de eventos metabólicos que culminam com a emergência da plântula. Diversas substâncias atenuadoras têm sido empregadas com a finalidade de mitigar os efeitos resultantes desse estresse e conferir maior tolerância às espécies. Desse modo, objetivou-se avaliar a ação de diferentes agentes como atenuadores do estresse hídrico na germinação e acúmulo de compostos orgânicos em plântulas de S. hispanica. Os tratamentos consistiram na pré-embebição das sementes durante 4 horas em ácido salicílico (1 mM.L-1), ácido giberélico (0,4 mM.L-1), água destilada e o tratamento controle (sem embebição). As sementes foram germinadas sob os potenciais osmóticos 0,0, -0,1, -0,2, -0,3 e -0,4 MPa, utilizando PEG 6000 como agente osmótico. Analisaram-se as variáveis porcentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz primária, massa seca total, prolina, açúcares solúveis totais e aminoácidos livres totais. O ácido salicílico e o ácido giberélico apresentaram os melhores resultados, dentre os atenuadores testados, incrementando a germinação, o comprimento, a massa seca e os componentes bioquímicos de plântulas de S. hispanica sob déficit hídrico. Logo, os ácidos salicílico e giberélico são eficientes na mitigação do estresse hídrico em sementes de S. hispanica até o potencial -0,4 MPa.

Abstract Salvia hispanica cultivation is recent in Brazil and occurs in the off-season, when there is lower water availability in the soil. Water deficit is one of the abiotic factors that most limit germination for compromising the sequence of metabolic events that culminate with seedling emergence. Several attenuating substances have been used to mitigate the effects resulting from this stress and give higher tolerance to the species. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the action of different agents as water stress attenuators in the germination and accumulation of organic compounds in S. hispanica seedlings. The treatments consisted of pre-soaking the seeds for 4 hours in salicylic acid (1 mM.L-1), gibberellic acid (0.4 mM.L-1), distilled water and control treatment (without soaking). The seeds were germinated at osmotic potentials of 0.0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3 and -0.4 MPa, using PEG 6000 as an osmotic agent. The variables germination percentage, germination speed index, shoot and primary root lengths, total dry mass, proline, total soluble sugars and total free amino acids were analyzed. Salicylic acid and gibberellic acid led to the best results among the attenuators tested, increasing germination, length, dry mass and biochemical components of S. hispanica seedlings under water deficit. Therefore, salicylic and gibberellic acids are efficient in mitigating water stress in S. hispanica seeds up to the potential of -0.4 MPa.

Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos dos íons nitrato e amônio sobre o acúmulo de nutrientes e produção da abobrinha italiana (cv. Caserta) cultivada em sistema hidropônico sob estrese salino. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação utilizando o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, arranjados em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, com 4 repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de duas formas de nitrogênio (nitrato - NO3- e amônio - NH4+) e cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa) (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; 5,0 e 6,5 dS m-1). As análises dos resultados indicaram que suprimento de N exclusivamente em forma de NH4+ promove maiores danos na membrana foliar e redução no acúmulo de macronutrientes e maiores relações Na+/K+, Na+/Ca++ e Na+/Mg++ na parte aérea das plantas de abobrinha. A irrigação com água a cima de 2,0 dS m-1 reduz o acúmulo de nutrientes na parte aérea das plantas e a produção de abobrinha. A toxicidade do NH4+ sob abobrinha italiana sobrepõe-se à toxicidade da salinidade, pois a fertilização exclusiva com esta forma de nitrogênio inibe sua produção, sendo a forma NO3- a mais adequada para o cultivo da espécie.

Abstract This research was carried out aiming at evaluating the effects of nitrate and ammonium ions on nutrient accumulation, biochemical components and yield of Italian zucchini (cv. Caserta) grown in a hydroponic system under salt stress conditions. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse utilizing an experimental design in randomized blocks, arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, with 4 replications. The treatments consisted of two forms of nitrogen (nitrate - NO3- and ammonium - NH4+) and 5 electrical conductivity levels of irrigation water (ECw) (0.5, 2.0, 3.5, 5.0 and 6.5 dS m-1). The analysis of the results indicated that supply of N exclusively in NH4+ form promotes greater damage to the leaf membrane and reduction in accumulation of macronutrients and higher Na+/K+, Na+/Ca++ and Na+/Mg++ ratios in the shoots of zucchini plants. Electrical conductivity of irrigation water above 2.0 dS m-1 reduces the accumulation of nutrients in shoot and yield of Italian zucchini plant. The toxicity of NH4+ under Italian zucchini plants overlap the toxicity of the salinity, since its fertilization exclusively with this form of nitrogen inhibits its production, being the NO3- form the most suitable for the cultivation of the species.

Abstract The genus Banisteriopsis (Malpighiaceae) comprises 77 genera and 1,300 species. Despite efforts to provide detailed information about the chemical wealth of B. laevifolia, this article provides the identification and characterization of compounds from the ethanolic extracts of the leaves and flowers using advanced methodologies which include high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry, which contribute to the knowledge about compounds present in the genus Banisteriopsis. The dereplication aided by Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking afforded the identification of seven compounds reported for this species for the first time. A mixture of two known flavonoids and a diterpenoid, 18-hydroxy-ent-halima-1(10),13-(E)-dien-15-oic acid, were isolated by conventional separation methods. The elevated 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity observed in some samples was attributed to either the type of extract, the presence of 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid, or the influence of the substitution pattern and the synergistic effect of the compounds present. Principal Component Analysis was applied to correlate mass spectrometry data with the antioxidant activity of the samples. The high diversity of metabolites found in this study and those which have been reported for Banisteriopsis strongly recommends further investigation into the chemical and biological properties of these species.

Resumo Fundamento: A vitamina D (VD) tem um importante papel na função cardíaca. No entanto, a vitamina exerce uma curva “dose-resposta” bifásica na fisiopatologia cardiovascular e pode causar efeitos deletérios, mesmo em doses não tóxicas. A VD exerce suas funções celulares ligando-se ao seu receptor. Ainda, a expressão da proteína de interação com a tiorredoxina (TXNIP) é positivamente regulada pela VD. A TXNIP modula diferentes visa de sinalização celular que podem ser importantes para a remodelação cardíaca. Objetivos: Avaliar se a suplementação com VD leva à remodelação cardíaca, e se a TXNIP e a tiorredoxina (Trx) estão associadas com esse processo. Métodos: Duzentos e cinquenta ratos Wistar machos foram alocados em três grupos: controle (C, n=21), sem suplementação com VD; VD3 (n = 22) e VD10 (n=21), suplementados com 3,000 e 10,000 UI de VD/ kg de ração, respectivamente, por dois meses. Os grupos foram comparados por análise de variância (ANOVA) com um fator e teste post hoc de Holm-Sidak (variáveis com distribuição normal), ou pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis e análise post-hoc de Dunn. O nível de significância para todos os testes foi de 5%. Resultados: A expressão de TXNIP foi mais alta e a atividade do Trx foi mais baixa no grupo VD10. Os animais que receberam suplementação com VD apresentaram aumento de hidroperóxido lipídico e diminuição de superóxido dismutase e glutationa peroxidase. A proteína Bcl-2 foi mais baixa no grupo VD10. Observou-se uma diminuição na β-oxidação de ácidos graxos, no ciclo do ácido tricarboxílico, na cadeia transportadora de elétrons, e um aumento na via glicolítica. Conclusão: A suplementação com VD levou à remodelação cardíaca e esse processo pode ser modulado por TXNIP e Trx, e consequentemente por estresse oxidativo.

Abstract Background: Vitamin D (VD) has been shown to play an important role in cardiac function. However, this vitamin exerts a biphasic “dose response” curve in cardiovascular pathophysiology and may cause deleterious effects, even in non-toxic doses. VD exerts its cellular functions by binding to VD receptor. Additionally, it was identified that the thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) expression is positively regulated by VD. TXNIP modulate different cell signaling pathways that may be important for cardiac remodeling. Objective: To evaluate whether VD supplementation lead to cardiac remodeling and if TXNIP and thioredoxin (Trx) proteins are associated with the process. Methods: A total of 250 Male Wistar rats were allocated into three groups: control (C, n=21), with no VD supplementation; VD3 (n = 22) and VD10 (n=21), supplemented with 3,000 and 10,000 IU of VD/ kg of chow respectively, for two months. The groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Holm-Sidak post hoc analysis, (variables with normal distribution), or by Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's test post hoc analysis. The significance level for all tests was 5%. Results: TXNIP protein expression was higher and Trx activity was lower in VD10. The animals supplemented with VD showed increased lipid hydroperoxide and decreased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. The protein Bcl-2 was lower in VD10. There was a decrease in fatty acid β-oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle and electron transport chain with shift to increase in glycolytic pathway. Conclusion: VD supplementation led to cardiac remodeling and this process may be modulated by TXNIP and Trx proteins and consequently oxidative stress.

Resumo A Lista Vermelha (IUCN) fornece avaliações precisas sobre status de conservação das espécies, porém a taxa e escala de deterioração ambiental desafia a comunidade conservacionista a desenvolver métodos rápidos para avaliações de riscos de extinção. Aqui, comparamos as avaliações da IUCN para 3.001 espécies de peixes dulcícolas neotropicais com dados facilmente acessíveis de risco de extinção: extensão de ocorrências, altitude e data de publicação das espécies. Além disso, usando apenas dados geográficos e taxonômicos, geramos avaliações preliminares de conservação para 2.334 espécies de peixes neotropicais aguardando avaliação da IUCN, e identificamos 671 espécies adicionais como potencialmente ameaçadas. Este número de espécies potencialmente ameaçadas representa um aumento de 59% em relação aquelas classificadas nas categorias de ameaça pela IUCN. Estes resultados expandem o número de espécies ameaçadas segundo a IUCN de 422 para 1.093 espécies ameaçadas ou potencialmente ameaçadas, representando cerca de 18% das espécies de peixes neotropicais. O risco de extinção é maior para espécies com distribuições geográficas restritas, que habitam rios de terras altas e que foram descritas mais recentemente. Sugerimos a região Central e Meridional do Andes e o Escudo das Guianas Orientais como prioridades para as próximas avaliações da IUCN sobre a conservação das espécies de peixes dulcícolas neotropicais.

Abstract The IUCN Red List (RL) provides high-quality conservation assessments for individual species, yet the rate and scale of environmental deterioration globally challenges the conservation community to develop expedited methods for risk assessment. Here we compare threat assessments for 3,001 species of Neotropical freshwater fishes (NFF) in the IUCN–RL using readily accessible data types as proxies for extinction risk: geographic range, elevation, and species publication date. Furthermore, using geographic and taxonomic data alone, we generated preliminary conservation assessments for 2,334 NFF species currently awaiting IUCN assessment, identifying an additional 671 NFF species as potentially threatened. This number of potentially threatened species represents an increase of 59% over the number of species currently assigned to threat categories by the IUCN–RL. These results substantially expand the number of threatened NFF species from 422 currently on the IUCN RL to 1,093 species as threatened or potentially threatened, representing about 18% of all NFF species. Extinction risk is greater in species with smaller geographic ranges, which inhabit upland rivers, and which were described more recently. We propose the Central and Southern Andes, and Eastern Guiana Shield as priorities in the upcoming IUCN RL assessment of NFF species conservation risk.

The degradation of a pharmaceutical mixture (gemfibrozil, hydrochlorothiazide and naproxen) by TiO2/UV-A in different aqueous matrices was evaluated. The matrix components affected the operational conditions, rate constants, and removal efficiency of the pharmaceuticals, as well as toxicity. For sewage treatment plant effluent, a TiO2 concentration three-fold higher (450 mg L−1) and an irradiation time 1.5-3 times longer were required to reach the same efficiency of degradation as the pharmaceuticals in deionized water and surface water matrices. An improvement in the rate constants and the removal efficiency of the pharmaceuticals was achieved by adding 6 mg L−1 of H2O2 and 150 mg L−1 of TiO2 in deionized water and surface water, but not in the sewage treatment plant effluent, due to the coupling of 450 mg L−1 of TiO2 and 50-200 mg L−1 of H2O2. Overall, TiO2/UV-A efficiently degraded all compounds, but an additional step is needed for the removal of residual toxicity.

RESUMO A salinidade tem efeitos complexos nas interações fisiológicas, nutricionais e hormonais das plantas. Objetivou-se avaliar a ação mitigadora da aplicação exógena de diferentes tipos e concentrações de hormônios vegetais em plantas de Carica papaya sob estresse salino. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação por meio do delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com tratamentos formados a partir de esquema fatorial 2 x 3 x 5, relativo a duas concentrações de sais na água de irrigação (0,6 e 2,4 dS m-1), três tipos de hormônios vegetais [Auxina = ácido indol-3-acético; Citocinina = CPPU (N-(2-cloro-piridil)-N-feniluréia) e Giberelina = ácido giberélico(AG3)], e cinco concentrações do hormônio vegetal (0; 12,5; 25,0; 37,5 50,0 µM L-1), com três repetições, totalizando 90 parcelas; sendo a unidade experimental composta por seis plantas. O cultivo do C. papaya, cv. Sunrise Solo, foi realizado em bandejas de polietileno de 162 cédulas, com capacidade de 50 mL. As plântulas foram avaliadas quanto a percentagem de sobrevivência e o acúmulo de fitomassa até aos 25 dias após semeadura. O aumento da salinidade da água de irrigação exerce efeitos danosos nas plantas de C. papaya independente da aplicação de hormônios vegetais. A aplicação exógena da giberelina tem efeito positivo na mitigação do estresse salino em plântulas de C. papaya, superiores aos efeitos das auxinas e citocininas. As aplicações exógenas de giberelina e auxina na concentração de 37,5 µM L-1 mitigam os efeitos da salinidade sobre as plântulas de C. papaya. A aplicação exógena da citocinina nas concentrações de 12,5 a 50,0 µM L-1 é inviável para as plântulas de C. papaya.

ABSTRACT The salinity has complex effects on the physiological, nutritional and hormonal interactions of plants. This study aimed to evaluate the mitigating action of exogenous application of different types and concentrations of phytohormones on Carica papaya under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse, using a randomized block design with treatments formed from a 2 x 3 x 5 factorial scheme, relative to two concentrations of salts in the irrigation water (0.6 and 2.4 dS m-1), three types of phytohormones [Auxin = indole-3-acetic acid; Cytokinin = CPPU (N-(2-chloro-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea) and Gibberellin = gibberellic acid(AG3)], and five concentrations of the phytohormone (0, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5 and 50.0 µM L-1), with three repetitions, totaling 90 plots, and the experimental unit consisted of six plants. C. papaya cv. ‘Sunrise Solo’ was grown on polyethylene trays of 162 cells, with capacity for 50 mL. The plants were evaluated for survival percentage and phytomass accumulation until 25 days after sowing. Increase in irrigation water salinity has deleterious effects on C. papaya plants regardless of the application of phytohormones. Exogenous application of gibberellin has a positive effect in mitigating salt stress on C. papaya plants, greater than the effects of auxins and cytokinins. Exogenous application of gibberellin and auxin at concentration of 37.5 µM L-1 mitigates the effects of salinity on C. papaya plants. Exogenous application of cytokinin at concentrations of 12.5 to 50.0 µM L-1 is not viable for C. papaya plants.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar neste estudo a tolerância de cultivares de feijão-caupi submetidas ao estresse hídrico, durante a germinação e estabelecimento da plântula. Para isso, utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial constituído de nove cultivares de feijão-caupi (BRS Guariba; BRS Potengi; BRS Itaim; BRS 17 Gurguéia; BRS Aracê; Paulistinha; Maratanã; Costela-de-Vaca e Canapu-Branco) e dois níveis de potencial osmótico induzidos por PEG 6000 [0,0 MPa (controle) e -0,4 MPa], em quatro repetições de 50 sementes. As variáveis analisadas foram a germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, comprimentos da radícula e da parte aérea, acúmulos de massa seca das partes aérea e radícula, e, também, determinou-se a dissimilaridade entre os genótipos por meio da distância Euclidiana. As cultivares de feijão-caupi têm a germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas prejudicado pela redução do potencial a -0,4 MPa. As cultivares BRS Guariba, BRS Aracê, Paulistinha e Canapu-Branco são mais tolerantes ao estresse hídrico, enquanto que o BRS Potengi, BRS Itaim, BRS 17 Gurguéia, BRS Maratanã e Costela-de-Vaca são mais sensíveis na fase inicial de desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of cowpea cultivars to water stress, during seed germination and seedling establishment. For this, a completely randomized experimental design was used in a factorial scheme consisting of nine cultivars of cowpea (BRS Guariba, BRS Potengi, BRS Itaim, BRS 17 Gurguéia, BRS Aracê, Paulistinha, Maratanã, Costela-de-Vaca and Canapu-Branco) and two levels of osmotic potential induced by PEG 6000 (0.0 MPa (control) and -0.4 MPa) in four replicates of 50 seeds. The variables analysed were germination, germination first count, root and shoot lengths, and dry matter accumulation of shoots and roots. The dissimilarity between the genotypes was also determined by Euclidean distance. Germination and initial development of cowpea cultivars are impaired by the reduction in the potential to -0.4 MPa. The cultivars BRS Guariba, BRS Aracê, Paulistinha and Canapu-Branco are the most tolerant to water stress, while BRS Potengi, BRS Itaim, BRS 17 Gurguéia, BRS Maratanã and Costela-de-Vaca are the most sensitive in the early development stage.

This work describes the preparation of composites of polypropylene and organophilic bentonites based on Brazilian and Argentinean bentonites. During the processing of the samples in a twin screw microextruder, torque and pressures of the extruder were accompanied and the viscosity values were calculated. No significant changes in the torque, pressure and viscosity were found for composites prepared with different bentonites. The samples were characterized by XRD and TEM to evaluate the structure and dispersion of the organophilic bentonites. Composites with exfoliated, partially exfoliated and intercalated structures were obtained and correlations between the intrinsic properties of the sodium clays and organophilic bentonites and their influence on the composites were studied. The cation exchange capacity of the sodium bentonites and the swelling capacity of the organophilic bentonites were the most important properties to obtain exfoliated structures in composites. All bentonites showed the potential to obtain polymer nanocomposites, but the ones from Argentina displayed the best results.

The identification of predators of birds' nests, crucial to a better understanding of predator-prey interactions, remains poorly known. Here we provide evidence that birds, and especially passerines, may depredate birds' nests in the Cerrado (Neotropical Savannah) of Central Brazil. Data was collected primarily in a Conservation Unit (Estação Ecológica de Águas Emendadas) during the breeding season, between 2003 and 2007. We report and discuss details on 14 events of nest predation, 12 of which by passerines, mostly by curl-crested jays - Cyanocorax cristatellus (Temminck, 1823). The results of our study suggest that the role of birds as nest predators in the Cerrado has been underestimated and needs to be further investigated.
