ABSTRACT Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by trypanosomatids, considered endemic in 98 countries, mainly associated with poverty. About 50,000–90,000 cases of VL occur annually worldwide, and Brazil has the second largest number of cases in the world. The clinical picture of VL is fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia, progressing to death in 90% of cases due to secondary infections and multi-organ failure, if left untreated. We describe the case of a 25-year-old female who lived in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, who had recently taken touristic trips to several rural areas in Southeastern Brazil and was diagnosed post-mortem. During the hospitalization in a hospital reference for the treatment of COVID-19, the patient developed acute respiratory failure, with chest radiographic changes, and died due to refractory shock. The ultrasound-guided minimally invasive autopsy diagnosed VL (macrophages containing amastigote forms of Leishmania in the spleen, liver and bone marrow), as well as pneumonia and bloodstream infection by gram-negative bacilli.

■ ABSTRACT Introduction: Complex wounds are serious tegumentary injuries that are difficult to resolve with conventional dressings. This study aimed to describe a third-intention wound healing technique, reproducible and low cost, applicable to complex wounds, using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) prosthesis temporarily placed in the injured area to promote the protection and stimulate its “granulation,” followed by autologous partial-thickness skin grafting. Method: Consecutively, 20 patients with complex wounds resulting from external causes were selected and divided into 2 groups: A - patients who underwent the coverage technique with PVC prosthesis, followed by grafting, and B - patients submitted to the care of the dressing team, with daily changes until wound granulation, standard in our institution. Patients were evaluated regarding length of stay; costs; local pain; complications; the time until medical discharge; and patient satisfaction. Results: The length of hospital stay, its costs, and the time until medical discharge were shorter in group A (p<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in local pain between techniques A and B. Conclusion: The technique using PVC prosthesis and graft has good efficacy for treating complex wounds, being reproducible and inexpensive.

■ RESUMO Introdução: Feridas complexas são lesões tegumentares graves, de difícil resolução com curativos convencionais. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever uma técnica de cicatrização de feridas por terceira intenção, reprodutível e de baixo custo, aplicável a feridas complexas, utilizando uma prótese de policloreto de vinila (PVC) colocada temporariamente na área da lesão para promover proteção e estimular sua “granulação”, seguida de enxerto autólogo de pele de espessura parcial. Método: De forma consecutiva, foram selecionados 20 pacientes com feridas complexas, decorrentes de causas externas, divididos em 2 grupos: A - pacientes que foram submetidos à técnica de cobertura com prótese de PVC, seguida de enxerto; e B - pacientes submetidos aos cuidados da equipe de curativo, com trocas diárias até granulação da ferida, padrão da nossa instituição. Os pacientes foram avaliados quanto ao tempo de internação; custos; em relação à dor local; à presença de complicações; ao tempo até a alta médica; e à satisfação do paciente. Resultados: O tempo de internamento e seus custos, assim como o tempo até a alta médica, foram menores no grupo A (p<0,05). Todavia, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa em relação à dor local entre as técnicas A e B. Conclusão: A técnica utilizando prótese de PVC e enxerto possui boa eficácia para o tratamento de feridas complexas, sendo reprodutível e de baixo custo.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: In-hospital cardiac arrest is a critical medical emergency. Knowledge of prognostic factors could assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation decision-making. Frailty and functional status are emerging risk factors and may play a role in prognostication. The objective was to evaluate the association between reduced mobility and in-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients over 18 years of age with in-hospital cardiac arrest in Botucatu, Brazil, from April 2018 to December 2021. Exclusion criteria were patients with a do-not-resuscitate order or patients with recurrent in-hospital cardiac arrest. Reduced mobility was defined as the need for a bed bath 48 h before in-hospital cardiac arrest. The outcomes of no return of spontaneous circulation and in-hospital mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 387 patients were included in the analysis. The mean age was 65.4±14.8 years; 53.7% were males and 75.4% had reduced mobility. Among the evaluated outcomes, the no return of spontaneous circulation rate was 57.1%, and in-hospital mortality was 94.3%. In multivariate analysis, reduced mobility was associated with no return of spontaneous circulation when adjusted by age, gender, initial shockable rhythm, duration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and epinephrine administration. However, in multiple logistic regression, there was no association between reduced mobility and in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSION: In patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest, reduced mobility is associated with no return of spontaneous circulation. However, there is no relation to in-hospital mortality.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Telomere length (TL) is a biomarker of cellular proliferative history. In healthy individuals, leukocyte TL shortens with age and associates with the lifespan of men and women. However, most of studies had used linear regression models to address the association of the TL attrition, aging and sex. Methods: We evaluated the association between the TL, aging and sex in a cohort of 180 healthy subjects by quantile regression. The TL of nucleated blood cells was measured by fluorescent in situ hypridization (flow-FISH) in a cohort of 89 men, 81 women, and 10 umbilical cord samples. The results were validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and compared to a linear regression analysis. Results: By quantile regression, telomere dynamics slightly differed between sexes with aging: women had longer telomeres at birth and slower attrition rate than men until the sixth decade of life; after that, TL eroded faster and became shorter than that in men. These differences were not observed by linear regression analysis, as the overall telomere attrition rates in women and men were similar (42 pb per year, p < 0.0001 vs. 45 pb kb per year, p < 0.0001). Also, qPCR did not recapitulate flow-FISH findings, as the telomere dynamics by qPCR followed a linear model. Conclusion: The quantile regression analysis accurately reproduced a third-orderpolynomial TL attrition rate in both women and men, but it depended on the technique applied to measure TL. The Flow-FISH reproduced the expected telomere dynamics through life and, differently from the qPCR, was able to detect the subtle TL variations associated with sex and aging.

RESUMO Antecedentes: O Doppler transcraniano (DTC) é uma técnica não invasiva para a avaliação da hemodinâmica cerebral, porém existem controvérsias na literatura sobre sua aplicabilidade preditiva em situações de elevada pressão intracraniana (PIC). Objetivo: Investigar o fluxo sanguíneo cerebral pelo DTC e correlacioná-lo com as variações da PIC na fase aguda da hipertensão intracraniana em modelo animal. Métodos: Dois grupos de animais (suínos) foram submetidos a hipertensão intracraniana secundária à indução de diferentes volumes de hematoma, por meio da insuflação de balão intracraniano controlado com 4 e 7 mL de solução salina fisiológica (grupos A e B, respectivamente). Em seguida, administrou-se infusão venosa de solução salina hipertônica (SSH 3%). Foram coletados os valores dos parâmetros de PIC e DTC (velocidade sistólica [FVs], diastólica [FVd] e média [FVm] do fluxo sanguíneo cerebral), bem como o índice de pulsatilidade (IP). Comparações entre os parâmetros do DTC e o monitoramento da PIC foram realizadas. Resultados: Vinte porcos foram estudados, dez no grupo A e dez no grupo B. Correlação significativa entre IP e PIC foi obtida, principalmente logo após a elevação abrupta da PIC. Não houve correlação entre PIC e FVs, FVd ou FVm separadamente. Também não houve alteração significativa na PIC após a infusão de SSH. Conclusões: Esses resultados demonstram o potencial do IP como um bom parâmetro para a avaliação de pacientes com suspeita de elevação da PIC.

ABSTRACT Background: Transcranial Doppler has been tested in the evaluation of cerebral hemodynamics as a non-invasive assessment of intracranial pressure (ICP), but there is controversy in the literature about its actual benefit and usefulness in this situation. Objective: To investigate cerebral blood flow assessed by Doppler technique and correlate with the variations of the ICP in the acute phase of intracranial hypertension in an animal model. Methods: An experimental animal model of intracranial hypertension was used. The experiment consisted of two groups of animals in which intracranial balloons were implanted and inflated with 4 mL (A) and 7 mL (B) for controlled simulation of different volumes of hematoma. The values of ICP and Doppler parameters (systolic [FVs], diastolic [FVd], and mean [FVm] cerebral blood flow velocities and pulsatility index [PI]) were collected during the entire procedure (before and during hematoma simulations and venous hypertonic saline infusion intervention). Comparisons between Doppler parameters and ICP monitoring were performed. Results: Twenty pigs were studied, 10 in group A and 10 in group B. A significant correlation between PI and ICP was obtained, especially shortly after abrupt elevation of ICP. There was no correlation between ICP and FVs, FVd or FVm separately. There was also no significant change in ICP after intravenous infusion of hypertonic saline solution. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the potential of PI as a parameter for the evaluation of patients with suspected ICP elevation.

Abstract This study aimed to characterize the profile of dental anxiety in pediatric patients, identifying the effect exerted by socioeconomic factors using dental data. A cross-sectional study design with a sample of 120 children aged 7–12 years old was used. Data relating to anxiety levels prior to dental care, socioeconomic aspects (family income, education level, child’s school type), and child’s dental history (previous dental appointments, previous treatment, caries experience) were collected. Additionally, participants completed the Brazilian version of the Children’s Fear Survey Schedule- Dental Subscale (B-CFSS-DS) to assess dental anxiety. Descriptive analyses, chi-squared (X 2 ) tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed, with a significance level of 5%. A total of 51 boys (42.5%) and 69 girls (57.5%) were included. There was no significant difference in dental anxiety between them. However, younger children had higher mean B-CFSS-DS scores (p = 0.036, Mann-Whitney). A higher prevalence of dental anxiety was found in participants from low-income families (p = 0.012, X 2 ) and in patients who did not receive endodontic treatment (p=0.034, X 2 ). Higher mean B-CFSS-DS scores were also observed in participants who did not receive endodontic treatment (p=0.001, Mann-Whitney) compared with those that did receive endodontic treatment. No relationship was found between education level, patient school type, first dental appointment, caries experience, and dental anxiety data. Younger children presented a profile of greater dental anxiety. Socioeconomic factors and dental data exerted some effect on dental anxiety, where children from low-income families and those not subjected to endodontic treatment displayed higher rates of dental anxiety.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To determine the normal optical nerve sheath (ONS) diameter ultrasonography (ONSUS) and evaluate the possible effects of drugs on ONS diameter during anesthetic induction in healthy pigs. Methods: Healthy piglets were divided into three groups: a control group, that received xylazine and ketamine (X/K); other that received xylazine, ketamine and propofol (X/K/P); and a third group that received xylazine, ketamine, and thiopental (X/K/T). The sheath diameter was assessed by ultrasonography calculating the average of three measurements of each eye from the left and right sides. Results: 118 animals were anesthetized (49 X/K 33 X/K/P and 39 X/K/T). Mean ONS sizes on both sides in each group were 0.394 ± 0.048 (X/K), 0.407 ± 0.029 (X/K/P) and 0.378 ± 0.042 cm (X/K/T) (medians of 0.400, 0.405 and 0.389, respectively). The ONS diameter varied from 0.287–0.512 cm (mean of 0.302 ± 0.039 cm). For group X/K, the mean diameter was 0.394 ± 0.048 cm. Significant differences in ONS sizes between the groups P and T (X/K/P > X/K/T, p = 0.003) were found. No statistically significant differences were detected when other groups were compared (X/K = X/K/P, p = 0.302; X/K = X/K/T, p = 0.294). Conclusions: Sedation with thiopental lead to significative ONS diameter reduction in comparison with propofol. ONSUS may be useful to evaluate responses to thiopental administration.

RESUMO Objetivos Determinar a incidência e os fatores de risco de complicações nas fraturas de alta energia das fraturas distais do fêmur fixadas com placa bloqueada lateral. Métodos Foram incluídos 47 pacientes, sendo 87,2% homens e idade média de 38,9 anos. Os principais parâmetros radiográficos coletados foram o ângulo femoral distal lateral (AFDL), ângulo femoral distal posterior (AFDP), comprimento da cominuição, comprimento da placa, comprimento de trabalho dos parafusos, perda óssea, contato medial após a redução e contato placa-osso, localização da formação do calo e falha do implante. As complicações registradas foram não união, falha do implante e infecção. Resultados Fraturas complexas C2 e C3 representaram 85,1% dos casos. As fraturas expostas corresponderam a 63,8% dos casos. O AFDL e AFDP médios foram 79,8° ± 4,0° e 79,3°± 6,0°, respectivamente. Os comprimentos de trabalho total, proximal e distal médios foram 133,3 ± 42,7, 60,4 ± 33,4 e 29,5 ± 21,8 mm, respectivamente. A taxa de infecção foi de 29,8% e o único fator de risco foi a fratura exposta (p = 0,005). A taxa de não união foi de 19,1%, com maior comprimento de trabalho (p = 0,035) e maior PDFA (p = 0,001) como fatores de risco. O local de formação do calo também influenciou na pseudoartrose (p = 0,034). Conclusões Fraturas distais do fêmur de alta energia apresentam maior incidência de pseudoartrose e infecção. A não união tem como fatores de risco maior comprimento de trabalho, maior AFDL e ausência de formação de calo nos lados medial e posterior. O fator de risco para infecção foi a fratura exposta. ABSTRACT Objective Determine complications’ incidence and risk factors in high-energy distal femur fractures fixed with a lateral locked plate. Methods Forty-seven patients were included; 87.2% were male, and the average age was 38.9. The main radiographic parameters collected were distal lateral femoral angle (DFA), distal posterior femoral angle (DPLF), comminution length, plate length, screw working length, bone loss, and medial contact after reduction and plate-bone contact, location of callus formation, and implant failure. The complications recorded were nonunion, implant failure, and infection. Results Complex C2 and C3 fractures accounted for 85.1% of cases. Open fractures accounted for 63.8% of cases. The mean AFDL and AFDP were 79.8 4.0 and 79.3 6.0, respectively. The average total proximal and distal working lengths were 133.3 42.7, 60.4 33.4, and 29.5 21.8 mm, respectively. The infection rate was 29.8%, and the only risk factor was open fracture (p = 0.005). The nonunion rate was 19.1%, with longer working length (p = 0.035) and higher PDFA (p = 0.001) as risk factors. The site of callus formation also influenced pseudoarthrosis (p = 0.034). Conclusion High-energy distal femoral fractures have a higher incidence of pseudoarthrosis and infection. Nonunion has greater working length, greater AFDL, and absence of callus formation on the medial and posterior sides as risk factors. The risk factor for infection was an open fracture. Abstract During the process of fruit development there is synthesis and catabolism of compounds that culminate with the specific characteristics of each species, such as changes in color, size, acidity, vitamins content and volatile composition. In the present study was evaluated during the development of camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia (HBK) McVaugh, Myrtaceae) the contents of pH, At, SS (ºBrix), Vitamin C, polyphenols, (L *, a * and b *) coloration and volatile composition using the HSPME-CGMS technique, at different stages of development. During development, an increase in the ºbrix variable was detected (6.92 to 9.02), and a decrease in the levels of vitamin C 1150 mg/100 g and total polyphenols 1280mg / 100g. Regarding the volatile composition, there was a difference of compounds according to the stage of development analyzed. Among the identified components, terpenes were the major class of compounds at all stages of maturation (p<0.05).

Abstract The present study aimed to develop extruded corn breakfast cereal enriched with whole peach palm flour. A 22 central composite rotatable design was used, and the cereal was processed in a ZKS-30 co-rotational twin-screw extruder (Werner and Pfleiderer), followed by its physicochemical, technological and microbiological characterization. The technological analysis revealed higher expansion and lower hardness as well as adequate lightness and water-absorption and water-solubility indices of the breakfast cereal at low moisture and intermediate peach palm flour contents. Moreover, 3.84% moisture, 0.63% ash, 6.09% protein, 0.39% lipids, 85.94% carbohydrates, 3.11% fiber and 246 RE of total carotenoids were found in the physicochemical analysis, and the microbiological parameters were in accordance with the Brazilian legislation (Resolution RDC 12/01). These results show that extruded corn breakfast cereal partially substituted with peach palm flour is an alternative product with good characteristics and market potential. The most recommended operational conditions to obtain products with good technological characteristics were a peach palm flour concentration of 25% and feed moisture of 16.2%.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a aceitabilidade de churros sem glúten, feitos com farinha de sorgo com ou sem tanino, assim como a retenção de seus compostos fenólicos e da sua capacidade antioxidante após processamento por cozimento e fritura. Os churros foram desenvolvidos pela substituição da farinha de trigo por farinhas de sorgo das cultivares BRS 305 com tanino (T-churro) ou BR 501 sem tanino (TF-churro). O teor de compostos fenólicos e a atividade antioxidante foram avaliados antes e depois do processamento térmico. Ambos os produtos apresentaram alta aceitabilidade (84,5‒95,5%) para todos os atributos sensoriais avaliados, e nenhuma diferença foi observada quanto à cor, ao aroma e ao sabor. Entretanto, o T-churro teve maior aceitação quanto à textura, à aceitabilidade geral e à intenção de compra. Os churros apresentaram composição centesimal semelhante quanto ao conteúdo de fibra. O teor de fenol foi cerca de três vezes e a atividade antioxidante cerca de 20 vezes maior no T-churro do que no TF-churro. Apesar de ter sido submetido a dois tipos de processamento (cozimento e fritura), o T-churro frito pronto para consumo apresentou mais de 50% de retenção de antocianinas, fenóis e atividade antioxidante, após a fritura. O produto TF-churro apresentou retenção desses compostos acima de 70, 40 e 65%, respectivamente. O teor de tanino do sorgo 'BRS 305' aumenta seu potencial funcional e não afeta negativamente a aceitabilidade dos churros. Sorgos com ou sem taninos têm potencial para a produção de churros sem glúten.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the acceptability of gluten-free churros made either with tannin or tannin-free sorghum flour, as well as the retention of their phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity retention after cooking and frying. The churros were developed by replacing wheat flour with sorghum flour from the sorghum cultivars BRS 305 with tannin (T-churro) or BRS 501 tannin free (TF-churro). The content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were evaluated before and after the thermal processing. Both products had a high acceptability (84.5‒95.5%) for all evaluated sensory attributes, and no difference was observed for color, aroma, and flavor. However, the T-churro showed a higher acceptance for texture, overall acceptability, and purchase intention. The churros had a similar proximate composition for fiber content. The phenol content was about three times and antioxidant activity about 20 times higher for T-churro than for TF-churro. Although subjected to two types of processing (cooking and frying), the fried and ready-to-eat T-churro retained more than 50% of anthocyanins, phenols, and antioxidant activity. The TF-churro product showed a retention of these compounds above 70, 40, and 65%, respectively. The tannin content of 'BRS 305' sorghum increases its functional potential and does not negatively affect the acceptability of the churros. Sorghum either with or without tannins has the potential to be used for the production of gluten-free churros.

Abstract The genus Melipona is subdivided into four subgenera based on morphological characteristics, and two groups based on cytogenetic patterns. The cytogenetic information on this genus is still scarce, therefore, the goal of this study was to characterize Melipona paraensis, Melipona puncticollis, and Melipona seminigra pernigra using the following techniques: C-banding, DAPI/CMA3 fluorochromes, and FISH with an 18S rDNA probe. Melipona paraensis (2n=18) and M. seminigra pernigra (2n=22) were classified as high heterochromatin content species (Group II). Their euchromatin is restricted to the ends of the chromosomes and is CMA3+; the 18S rDNA probe marked chromosome pair number 4. Melipona puncticollis (2n=18) is a low heterochromatin content species (Group I) with chromosome pair number 1 marked with CMA3 and 18S rDNA. Low heterochromatin content is a putative ancestral karyotype in this genus and high content is not a monophyletic trait (Melikerria presents species with both patterns). Differences concerning the karyotypic characteristics can be observed among Melipona species, revealing cytogenetic rearrangements that occurred during the evolution of this genus. Studies in other species will allow us to better understand the processes that shaped the chromatin evolution in Melipona.

RESUMO Em relação às diversas doenças que reduzem a produção da cultura do tomateiro, destaca-se a ocorrência da virose conhecida como “vira-cabeça”. Epidemias dessa doença são frequentes com altas taxas de progresso e danos significativos. Nesse caso, estudos sobre a variabilidade espaço-temporal podem auxiliar em propor estratégias de manejo. Portanto, o objetivo desse estudo foi mapear a distribuição espacial da incidência do “vira-cabeça” ao longo do tempo em lavoura de tomateiro, para entender os mecanismos de dispersão do patógeno e progresso da doença. Para isso, a presença ou ausência de sintomas da doença foi monitorada ao longo do tempo em 120 plantas georreferenciadas, dispostas em malha regular e distribuídos num espaçamento de 1,0 x 0,5 m. Os dados de incidência da doença foram submetidos à análise geoestatística. Após o ajuste dos semivariogramas foi realizada a interpolação dos dados por krigagem. Houve epidemia da doença na lavoura de tomate, e a taxa de progresso (Dy/Dt) variou de 4,7 a 6 plantas doentes/dia, e 100% das plantas apresentaram sintomas aos 20 dias após a primeira detecção da doença na lavoura. Houve dependência espacial forte da distribuição das plantas de tomateiro com sintomas de “vira-cabeça” em todas as avaliações, e valor de alcance variando de 4,3 a 1,69 m. Ao longo do tempo surgiram focos secundários da doença, expansão lateral e coalescência desses, caracterizando dispersão por ação do agente vetor associado às fontes de inóculo inicial, internas e externas à lavoura. O padrão aleatório de distribuição da doença evoluiu para agregado, e posteriormente regular.

ABSTRACT Considering the various diseases that reduce tomato crop production, the virosis known as “vira-cabeça” is highlighted. Epidemics of this disease are frequent, showing high progress rates and expressive damage. In this case, studies about the space-time variability can help propose management strategies. Therefore, the aim this study was to map the spatial distribution of tospovirus incidence over time in a tomato crop in order to understand the dispersal mechanisms of this pathogen and the disease progress. Thus, the presence or the absence of symptoms of this disease was monitored over time in 120 georeferenced plants, arranged in a regular mesh and distributed in a spacing of 1.0 x 0.5 m. The disease incidence data were subjected to the geostatistical analysis. After the adjustment of semivariograms, interpolation of data was performed by means of kriging. There was epidemic of the disease in tomato crop, and the progress rate (Dy/Dt) varied from 4.7 to 6 diseased plants/day, while 100% plants exhibited symptoms at 20 days after the first detection of the disease on the crop. There was strong spatial dependence of the distribution of tomato plants with symptoms of “vira-cabeça” in all assessments, and the reach value varied from 4.3 to 1.69 m. Over time, secondary foci of the disease emerged, as well as lateral expansion and coalescence of the latter, characterizing dispersion due to the action of the vector agent associated with initial inoculum sources, internal and external to the tomato crop. The random pattern of the disease distribution progressed to aggregated and subsequently regular.

ABSTRACT Cardanol is a constituent of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid that presents larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti. The isolation of cardanol is somewhat troublesome, however, in this work we describe an efficient and inexpensive method to obtain it as a pure material. The compound was used as starting material to make chemical transformation leading to saturated cardanol, epoxides and, halohydrins. These derivatives were tested for toxicity against Aedes aegypti larvae. The results showed that iodohydrins are very promising compounds for making commercial products to combat the vector mosquito larvae presenting a LC50 of 0.0023 ppm after 72 h of exposure.

RESUMO Racional: O desfecho satisfatório na abordagem cirúrgica da obesidade deve contemplar, além da perda de peso, alteração significativa nas comorbidades preexistentes e na qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Objetivo: Avaliar a qualidade de vida no pós-operatório tardio de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de gastrectomia vertical por videolaparoscopia. Métodos: Foi aplicado o questionário "Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System" (BAROS) em pacientes submetidos à gastrectomia vertical por videolaparoscopia. Resultados: Foram avaliados 47 pacientes, entre 21 e 60 anos de idade. O IMC médio antes da operação era 43,06±5,87 kg/m². A média percentual de redução do excesso de peso após foi de 85,46±23,6%. A pontuação obtida pelos pacientes no questionário sobre a melhora na qualidade de vida evidenciou resultado excelente (36,17%), ótimo (40,43%), bom (21,28%) e razoável (2,13%). Houve melhora clínica após a operação em todas as comorbidades investigadas. Conclusão: A perda de peso foi fundamental para a melhoria na qualidade de vida e proporcionou resolução ou a melhora clínica em todas as comorbidades investigadas.

ABSTRACT Background: Mesenteric ischemia is a challenging diagnosis. Delay in diagnosis can lead to extent bowel necrosis and poor outcomes. Ischemia and reperfusion syndrome plays an important role in this scenario. Aim: To access effects of different post-conditioning cycles on mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion syndrome. Method: Twenty-five rats were assigned into five groups: Sham, used to establish normal parameters; control group, submitted to mesenteric ischemia for 30 min; in groups GP3, GP1 and GP30, ischemia was followed by post-conditioning protocol, which consisted of 1 cycle of 3 min (GP3), 3 cycles of 1 min (GP1) or 6 cycles of 30 s (GP30), respectively. Ileum samples were harvested after one hour of reperfusion. Intestinal mucosal injury was evaluated through histopathological analysis. Results: The average of mesenteric injury degree was 0 in the sham group, 3.6 in the control group, 3.4 in GP3, 3.2 in GP1, and 3.0 in GP30; villous length average was 161.59 in sham group, 136.27 in control group, 135.89 in GP3, 129.46 in GP1, and 135.18 in GP30. Was found significant difference between sham and other groups (p<0.05); however, there was no difference among post-conditioning groups. Conclusion: Post-conditioning adopted protocols were not able to protect intestinal mucosa integrity after mesenteric ischemia and short term reperfusion.
