Abstract The state of Uttarakhand in India lies in a highly seismically active zone, therefore earthquake resistant design criteria have been followed for major construction practice in this region. One of the major inputs for earthquake-resistant design is average shear wave velocity (V S ) at 30 m depth. In the present work, at twenty-six different sites, the Horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) technique and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) is used for joint analysis to obtain a one-dimensional velocity model that supports both the HV spectrum and dispersion curve obtained from HVSR and MASW methods, respectively. Shear wave profiles obtained at various sites are compared with the bore log data obtained from drilling and it clearly shows that the (V S ) for the same formation have a strong dependence on the depth at which it occurred. Data from twenty-four shear wave profiles have been used to prepare a linear regression relation of (V S ) for different lithological formations with respect to their depth of occurrence. Root mean square error obtained from the developed relationship for various lithologies clearly shows that the results are fairly well within the range of acceptance. The developed relations have been further validated by calculating Vs profile from bore log data obtained at two new location sites that are not included in the data set used for the preparation of regression relations. A comparison of two velocity sections clearly shows that the velocity profile computed from regression relation matches closely with that obtained from the seismic survey and thereby establishing the efficacy of developed regression relationship for its practical implementation. This developed relation allows soil type classification for zoning purposes.

Resumen El estado de Uttarakhand en la India se encuentra en una zona de alta actividad sísmica, por lo que se han seguido criterios de diseño resistentes a los terremotos para las principales prácticas de construcción en esta región. Una de las principales entradas para el diseño resistente a los terremotos es la velocidad media de la onda de corte (V S ) a 30 m de profundidad. En el presente trabajo, en veintiséis sitios diferentes, la técnica de la relación espectral horizontal a vertical (HVSR) y el análisis multicanal de onda de superficie (MASW) se utiliza para el análisis conjunto para obtener un modelo de velocidad unidimensional que soporta tanto la curva de espectro de HV como la curva de dispersión obtenida de los métodos HVSR y MASW, respectivamente. Los perfiles de onda de corte obtenidos en varios sitios se comparan con los datos de registro de perforación obtenidos de la perforación y muestra claramente que los Vs para la misma formación tienen una fuerte dependencia de la profundidad en la que ocurrió. Se han utilizado datos de veinticuatro perfiles de onda de corte para preparar una relación de regresión lineal de Vs para diferentes formaciones litológicas con respecto a su profundidad de ocurrencia. El error cuadrático medio obtenido a partir de la relación desarrollada para varias litologías muestra claramente que los resultados están bastante bien dentro del rango de aceptación. Las relaciones desarrolladas han sido validadas adicionalmente por el cálculo de perfil Vs de los datos de registro de perforación obtenidos en dos nuevos sitios de ubicación que no están incluidos en el conjunto de datos utilizado para la preparación de relaciones de regresión. Una comparación de dos secciones de velocidad muestra claramente que el perfil de velocidad calculado a partir de la relación de regresión coincide estrechamente con el obtenido de la encuesta sísmica y por lo tanto se establece la eficacia de la relación de regresión desarrollada para su implementación práctica. Esta relación desarrollada permite la clasificación del tipo de suelo para fines de zonificación.

ABSTRACT Villous adenoma is uncommonly seen in the urogenital tract and is even more rarely seen in the upper urinary tract and renal pelvis. Like colorectal adenomas, these neoplasms can transform into adenocarcinoma. The preoperative diagnosis is challenging due to their frequent association with hydronephrosis. Herein, we present the case of a villous adenoma of the renal pelvis in a 62-year-old man presenting with recurrent urinary tract infection. The computed tomography scan showed marked hydronephrosis but no suspicious mass in the right kidney. A laparoscopic right nephrectomy was performed. Gross examination revealed a dilated renal pelvis with an irregular exophytic lesion in the renal pelvis’s upper surface. The histopathological examination showed slender, elongated villi with thin fibrovascular cores, consistent with villous adenoma morphology. Isolated villous adenomas have a favorable prognosis. However, the pathologist should undertake a search for an invasive component.

ABSTRACT Primary paraganglioma and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder are rare tumors, comprising 0.05% of all bladder tumors and <1% of all malignant bladder tumors, respectively. These tumors can be the cause of a diagnostic dilemma or misdiagnosis on morphology. Paraganglioma is often mistaken for urothelial carcinoma and small cell carcinoma for poorly differentiated carcinoma or lymphoma. Herein, we report a case of primary paraganglioma and another of a small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder and discuss their closest differential diagnoses. The diagnostic pitfalls should be kept in mind so that correct, timely diagnosis of these entities can be made due to implications in the management and prognosis.

ABSTRACT Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is an uncommon subtype of renal angiomyolipoma associated with potentially malignant behavior and is considered a distinct entity by the World Health Organization classification of renal tumors. We present a case of an epithelioid variant of angiomyolipoma with extension into the renal vein, inferior vena cava reaching up to the right atrium. Pre-operatively, a diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma was considered based on imaging findings. Intra-operatively due to extensive adhesions, surgical resection was not performed and only tissue sampling was performed for histopathology. Microscopic examination revealed short fascicles of spindle cells and perivascular epithelioid cells. A differential diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid differentiation was considered. The immunohistochemical profile showed tumor cells that express Melan-A and smooth muscle actin, while they were negative for pan-cytokeratin, PAX8, CK7, CD117 and CD34. Therefore a diagnosis of epithelioid angiomyolipoma was rendered. The presence of intravascular thrombi on radiological investigation and carcinoma-like growth pattern on light microscopy may compound an erroneous diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma. Hence, it is prudent for the urologist to consider differential diagnosis other than renal cell carcinoma when confronted with a renal neoplasm presenting with intravascular thrombi. In these cases, a core biopsy should be planned pre-operatively and diagnosis should be made with aid of appropriate immunohistochemical markers.

RESUMO A histiocitose de células de Langerhans (HCL) caracteriza-se por acúmulo anormal de histiócitos em tecidos como pulmão, baço, medula óssea, pele, sistema nervoso central, fígado e linfonodos, causando efeitos focais ou sistêmicos. Nenhuma apresentação clínica e radiográfica específica da HCL está descrita na literatura. Isso impõe um dilema diagnóstico para os cirurgiões. A escápula é o local de 3% dos tumores ósseos, ao passo que é o lugar menos comum para a HCL. Em um menino de 10 anos de idade, com lesão isolada na escápula e sem outro envolvimento sistêmico, sem achados específicos na RM ou na TC da escápula, o diagnóstico foi confirmado pela biópsia. A divisão entre doença isolada e de múltiplos sistemas é fundamental para o tratamento, considerando-se que este caso é uma doença de um só sistema. O paciente teve melhora clínica no acompanhamento de dois anos. A escápula é um dos locais mais raros de ocorrência da HCL, e como as lesões mimetizam umas às outras, sempre é preciso realizar biópsia por imuno-histoquímica para CD68 e S-100. Esta doença atingiu apenas um sistema, levando ao tratamento conservador e o paciente apresentou melhora clínica.

ABSTRACT Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is characterised by an abnormal histiocytic accumulation in tissues such as the lung, spleen, bone marrow, skin, central nervous system, liver and lymph nodes, causing focal or systemic effects. No specific clinical & radiographic presentation of LCH is described in literature. This poses a diagnostic dilemma for surgeons. The scapula is the site of 3% of bone tumours, while for LCH it is the least common site. In a 10-year-old boy with isolated lesion of the scapula with no other systemic involvement, and no specific finding in MRI or CT scan of scapula, diagnosis was confirmed on biopsy. Division into single and multi-system disease is paramount in treatment, given that it is a single system disease. The patient improved clinically on follow-up of 2 years. The scapula is one of the rarest site of LCH, and because various lesions mimic each other, a biopsy is always required, with immunohistochemistry for CD68 & S-100. This was only a single system disease, so conservative management was performed, and the patent improved clinically.

RESUMEN La histiocitosis de células de Langerhans (HCL) se caracteriza por la acumulación anormal de histiocitos en tejidos como pulmón, bazo, médula ósea, piel, sistema nervioso central, hígado y linfonodos, causando efectos focales o sistémicos. Ninguna presentación clínica y radiográfica específica de la HCL está descrita en la literatura. Eso impone un dilema diagnóstico para los cirujanos. La escápula es el local de 3% de los tumores óseos, al paso que es el lugar menos común para la HCL. En un niño de 10 años de edad, con lesión aislada en la escápula y sin otro compromiso sistémico, sin hallazgos específicos en la RM o en la TC de la escápula, el diagnóstico fue confirmado por la biopsia. La división entre enfermedad aislada y de múltiples sistemas es fundamental para el tratamiento, considerándose que este caso es una enfermedad de un único sistema. El paciente tuvo mejora clínica en el acompañamiento de dos años. La escápula es uno de los locales más raros de ocurrencia de la HCL, y como las lesiones mimetizan unas a otras, siempre es preciso realizar biopsia por inmunohistoquímica para CD68 y S-100. Esta enfermedad alcanzó a sólo un sistema, llevando al tratamiento conservador y el paciente presentó mejora clínica.

ABSTRACT Liposomes, the vesicles of phospholipid bilayer, can encapsulate both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs and protect them from degradation. Liposomes have been extensively studied and continue to create intense interest in research since their discovery in the mid-1960s. Since then, liposomes have been considered to be the most successful nanocarriers for drug deliver and have made their way to the market. Currently, a number of liposomal formulations are on the marker for cancer treatment and many more are in pipe line. This review discusses about the liposome components, methods of preparation, drug encapsulation mechanism and the potential therapeutic applications of liposomes in cancer therapy.

Este documento presenta, bajo el supuesto de un modelo geométrico de desplazamiento fijo, patrones de distribución de las familias, de acuerdo con el número de defunciones de sus hijos menores de cinco años. El modelo emplea diferentes parámetros relacionados con la mortalidad en la infancia en una familia, estimada con el método de momentos y de máxima verosimilitud. Los modelos propuestos ajustan los datos observados, mostrando mejor aproximación a la encuesta de área y describe algunas conclusiones vitales.

This paper proposed, under assumptions of inflated type fixed displaced geometric model, the distribution pattern of families according to number of child deaths within the first five years of life. The proposed model involves several parameters related to child mortality in a family, which is estimated with Method of Moments and Maximum Likelihood Estimation techniques. The proposed models fitted the observed data showing a better approximation at the survey area and draw some vital conclusions.
