Cat and dog feed production has increased worldwide, and much emphasis has been placed on the importance of determining the mineral composition of pet foods. In this work, the concentrations of Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Sr, V and Zn in dry feed for cats and dogs employing inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) were determined and evaluated according to regulatory agencies. Forty-one dry feed samples (24 dog feed and 17 cat feed) were analyzed. The obtained concentrations ranged from 2.3 mg kg-1 (Ba) to 2.8 g kg-1 (Ca) in cat feeds, and from 3.8 mg kg-1 (Cu) to 3.4 g kg-1 (Ca) in dog feeds. The concentrations of P are in accordance with the Brazilian legislation, and Mn and Zn contents met the American legislation. The concentration values of Cu, K and Mg presented in some samples were below the limits established by American regulatory agency. Based on multivariate data analysis evaluated from flavors of the products and brands, it was concluded that the feed samples were uniform since there was no trend to group formation and classification according to their mineral composition, except one dog feed brand, which had a significant content of Al and Cu.

As distribuições de Al, Cu, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb e Zn foram investigadas em dois sítios de sedimentos do reservatório Macela, Nordeste do Brasil. A análise de componentes principais (PCA) separou nitidamente os sítios de sedimentos coletados e as suas diferentes seções. Cu, Cr, Mn e Zn apresentaram as maiores concentrações nas seções do topo (0-20 cm) e mostraram correlações significativas com o conteúdo de carbono orgânico total (Corg). As concentrações de Co, Pb e Ni foram maiores nas seções do fundo (25-45 cm) e mostraram fortes correlações com alumínio. Cu, Cr, Mn e Zn foram provenientes do aporte antropogênico, enquanto que Co, Ni e Pb foram de origem natural. As toxicidades avaliadas com base nos valores do nível limiar de efeitos (TEL) e nível provável de efeitos (PEL) listados no Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQG) canadense mostraram que Cu, Pb e Zn raramente exercem efeitos adversos aos organismos, enquanto que para o Ni, esses efeitos biológicos ocorrem frequentemente à biota do reservatório. A toxicidade do Cr foi incerta.

The distributions of Al, Cu, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in two sediment cores obtained from the Macela Reservoir in Northeast Brazil. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly separated both the cores and the sections corresponding to different depths. The concentrations of Cu, Cr, Mn and Zn were highest in the upper sections (0-20 cm), and were significantly correlated with the total organic carbon (Corg) content. The concentrations of Co, Pb and Ni were highest in the lower sections (25-45 cm), and showed strong correlations with aluminum. Cu, Cr, Mn and Zn were derived from anthropogenic sources, while Co, Ni and Pb were of natural origin. Toxicity assessment based on the threshold effect level (TEL) and probable effect level (PEL) values listed in the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQG) showed that Cu, Pb and Zn rarely cause any adverse effects, while Ni was likely to cause frequent effects in the biota of the reservoir. The toxicity of Cr was uncertain.

As distribuições de Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Fe e Al foram investigadas em sedimentos superficiais coletados em 19 sítios da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Sergipe, Nordeste do Brasil. Foi definida uma base geoquímica para a região (RGB) usando o ferro como elemento de referência. Fatores de enriquecimento (EF) e índice de geoacumulação (Igeo) foram empregados para determinar a contribuição por origem antropogênica. Valores de EF mostraram que os sedimentos dos sítios 1, 5 e 13 podem ser considerados contaminados por Pb, Cr e Cu, respectivamente. Valores de Igeo mostraram que o sítio 13 pode ser considerado contaminado. Há uma grande predominância nos sedimentos de metais de origem natural. A possível toxicidade foi avaliada comparando com os valores PEC-TEC dos guias de qualidade de sedimentos (SQG). Análise de componentes principais (PCA) separou claramente os pontos em dois grupos e a análise de agrupamento hierárquico (HCA) confirmou as interpretações feitas pela PCA.

The distributions of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Fe and Al were investigated in surface sediments collected at 19 sites in the Sergipe River Hydrographic Basin of Northeast Brazil. A regional geochemical baseline (RGB) was defined using iron as a reference element. Enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) were used to determine the extent of anthropogenic metal pollution. EF values showed that sediments from sites 1, 5 and 13 could be considered contaminated by Pb, Cr and Cu, respectively. Igeo values showed that only site 13 could be considered contaminated. For other sites, results indicated that naturally occurring metals predominated in the sediments. Possible toxicity related to these metals was examined using the comparing sediment chemical data with sediment quality guidelines (SQG) PEC-TEC values. Principal component analysis (PCA) clearly separated the sites into two groups and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) confirmed the interpretations made from the PCA results.

A espectroscopia de fluorescência e o carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD) foram utilizados para caracterização da matéria orgânica dissolvida (MOD) no estuário do Rio Piauí, um estuário tropical situado no Estado de Sergipe, nordeste do Brasil. As intensidades de fluorescência foram maiores no período chuvoso e menores no período seco, evidenciando que a variabilidade das propriedades fluorescentes da MOD é ditada, principalmente, pela descarga fluvial e pelo processo de diluição no estuário. No período chuvoso, os compostos tipo triptofano e húmicos predominaram na composição da MOD, enquanto no período seco ocorreu um aumento significativo dos constituintes tipo proteínas. As relações das intensidades de fluorescência com a salinidade sugerem um comportamento não conservativo para a MOD fluorescente. O COD mostrou um comportamento conservativo no período seco e não conservativo no período chuvoso, com produção de COD na parte superior do estuário. A complexação da MOD com o Cu(II), estudada usando a técnica de supressão da fluorescência, evidenciou o potencial de complexação dos fluoróforos tipo proteínas, tripofano e húmico.

Fluorescence spectroscopy and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements were used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Piauí River estuary, a tropical estuary situated in the State of Sergipe, Northeast Brazil. Fluorescence intensities were greater during the rainy period than the dry period, demonstrating that variability in the fluorescence properties of the DOM was determined mainly by the fluvial discharge and the dilution processes occurring in the estuary. During the rainy period, tryptophan-like and humic substances were the main components of the DOM, while during the dry period there was a significant increase of protein-like constituents. Relationships identified between fluorescence intensities and salinity were indicative of non-conservative behavior of the fluorescent DOM. DOC showed behavior that was conservative during the dry period, and non-conservative during the rainy period, with production of DOC in the upper reaches of the estuary. The complexation of DOM with Cu(II), studied using the fluorescence suppression technique, showed the complexation potentials of protein, tryptophan and humic type fluorophores.

A sub-bacia hidrográfica do rio Poxim é formada por quatro rios de água doce, Poxim-Açu, Poxim-Mirim, Poxim e Pitanga e está situada na porção leste do Estado de Sergipe, Nordeste do Brasil. Nesse trabalho foi investigada a distribuição, os fatores que controlam as concentrações e o risco de toxicidade para Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al e Fe em sedimentos superficiais dos quatro rios. A toxicidade foi avaliada usando o Consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines for freshwater ecosystems. A matriz de Spearman não indicou associação dos metais com a matéria orgânica, mas mostrou uma forte correlação com alumínio, moderada com o ferro e fraca com o manganês, sugerindo ser as argilas os principais carreadores dos metais para os sedimentos. Em todas as amostras as concentrações dos metais ficaram abaixo do TEC (threshold effect concentration) indicando que em relação aos metais traço, raramente deve ocorrer efeito adverso para a biota aquática. Foi definida uma base geoquímica para a região usando o lítio como elemento de referência. Somente em três sítios foram observados enriquecimentos dos metais associados a influências antrópicas. Os valores do fator de enriquecimento sugerem uma grande predominância nos sedimentos, de metais de origem natural.

The Poxim river hydrographic sub-basin comprises four freshwater rivers, Poxim-Açu, Poxim-Mirim, Poxim and Pitanga, and is located in the East of Sergipe State, Northeast of Brazil. The present work investigates the distribution, the factors controlling concentrations, and toxicity risks of the metals Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al and Fe, in surface sediments of the four rivers. Toxicity was evaluated using the Consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines for freshwater ecosystems. Spearman correlation analysis did not indicate any association of the metals with organic matter, however strong, moderate and weak correlations with aluminium, iron, and manganese, respectively, suggested that clay minerals were the main carrier of metals to sediments. Concentrations of metals in all samples were below the TEC (threshold effect concentration), indicating that for these trace metals adverse effects on aquatic biota should rarely occur. A geochemical baseline for the region was defined using lithium as reference element. Metal enrichments due to anthropogenic influence were only observed at three sites. At other sites, enrichment factors were indicative of a large predominance of naturally occurring metals in the sediments.

Foram estudados o sulfeto volatilizado em meio ácido (AVS), os metais simultaneamente extraídos (SEM) e os metais em sítios de sedimentos do Estuário do Rio Sergipe, Brasil. As concentrações de AVS e SEM foram, em geral, maiores nos sedimentos dos sítios situados nas áreas que recebem maior aporte antrópico devido à poluição urbana. Nesses sítios, o sulfeto parece ser a principal fase de ligação para os metais. No sítio do sedimento situado na área de maior influência marinha, as fases mais importantes de ligação para os metais parecem estar associadas à matéria orgânica e aos carbonatos. Os perfis de AVS permitiram identificar dois tipos de processos de sedimentação no estuário. Em todos os sítios, as relações SEM/AVS foram muito menores do que 1.

Acid volatile sulfide (AVS), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and metals were studied in sediment cores from the Sergipe River Estuary, Brazil. AVS and SEM concentrations were, in general, higher in the core sediments from areas which receive a higher anthropic contribution due to urban pollution. In these cores, the sulfide seemed to be the main connection for the metals. In the core obtained from the area of major marine influence, the most important binding phases for the metals seemed to be associated with organic matter and carbonates. The AVS profiles allow identification of two types of sedimentation processes in the estuary. In all cores SEM/AVS ratios were much lower than 1.
