ABSTRACT Background: Diet is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for the incidence of gastric cancer. Objective: To carry out an exploratory analysis on the dietary patterns of individuals with gastric adenocarcinoma (AdG) in the Central Brazil region. Methods: This is a case-control study carried out from April 2019 to July 2022, in three reference centers for cancer treatment in Goiânia-GO. The cases were patients diagnosed with AdG, the control 1 dyspeptic patients submitted to upper digestive endoscopy and the control 2 patients without gastric complaints. In the three groups, patients aged 18 to 75 years and of both sexes were recruited. To assess food consumption, a Food Frequency Questionnaire validated for the Brazilian population was used. Dietary patterns were identified by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), using principal component analysis as the extraction method, followed by Varimax rotation. Results: The commonality values in the EFA for the foods/food groups consumed by the cases and controls were above 0.30 for all variables. The variance explained by the model was 66.7% for cases, 60.3% for control 1 and 59.7% for control 2. Three eating patterns were identified in cases, control 1 and control 2 that explained 34, 87%, 35.41% and 33.25% respectively of the total variance. The first pattern (“healthy”) was characterized by the consumption of vegetables, fruits, meat and cheese; the second (“unhealthy”) for sausages, pizzas, snacks, ketchup, sweet drinks and instant noodles and the third (“prudent”) rice, beans, meat and fried fish and pasta. Conclusion: This study identified three dietary patterns among patients with AdG and controls in the Central Brazil region. According to the identified patterns, it will be possible to establish a relationship between diet and other epidemiological measures aimed at the prevention of gastric cancer.

RESUMO Contexto: A dieta é um dos fatores de risco modificáveis mais importante para a incidência de câncer gástrico. Objetivo: Realizar uma análise exploratória sobre os padrões alimentares de indivíduos com adenocarcinoma gástrico (AdG) na região Brasil central. Métodos: Este é um estudo de caso-controle realizado no período de abril de 2019 a julho de 2022, em três centros de referência para o tratamento para câncer em Goiânia-GO. Os casos foram pacientes diagnosticados com AdG, o controle 1 pacientes dispépticos submetidos a endoscopia digestiva alta e o controle 2 pacientes sem queixas gástricas. Nos três grupos foram recrutados pacientes de 18 a 75 anos e de ambos os sexos. Para avaliar o consumo alimentar foi utilizado um Questionário de Frequência Alimentar validado para a população brasileira. Os padrões alimentares foram identificados por Análise Fatorial Exploratória (AFE), utilizando a análise de componentes principais como método de extração, seguida pela rotação Varimax. Resultados: Os valores de comunalidade na AFE para os alimentos/grupos alimentares consumidos pelos casos e controles ficaram acima de 0,30 para todas as variáveis. A variância explicada pelo modelo foi de 66,7%, para casos, 60,3% para o controle 1 e 59,7% para o controle 2. Foram identificados três padrões alimentares nos casos, controle 1 e controle 2 que explicaram 34,87%, 35,41% e 33,25% respectivamente da variância total. O primeiro padrão (“saudável”) foi caracterizado pelo consumo de vegetais, frutas, carne e queijos; o segundo (“não saudável”) por embutidos, pizzas, snacks, ketchup, bebidas doces e macarrão instantâneo e o terceiro (“prudente”) arroz, feijão, carnes e peixes fritos e massas. Conclusão: Esse estudo identificou três padrões alimentares entre os pacientes com AdG e os controles na região Brasil central. De acordo com os padrões identificados, será possível estabelecer uma relação entre a dieta e outras medidas epidemiológicas destinadas à prevenção do câncer gástrico.

Abstract Objective To investigate associations of maternal and cord blood cytokine patterns with newborn size and body composition. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 70 pregnant women and their healthy newborns selected from the “Araraquara Cohort Study”. Newborn anthropometric measurements were recorded at birth. Body composition was evaluated by air displacement plethysmography. Maternal blood samples were collected from pregnant women between 30 and 36 weeks of gestation, and umbilical cord blood samples were collected immediately after placenta discharge. The concentrations of the cytokines were determined in plasma by ELISA. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess associations between maternal and cord blood cytokine concentrations and newborn anthropometry and body composition measurements. Results Maternal plasma TGF-β1 concentration was inversely associated with newborn weight (β= -43.0; p= 0.012), length (β= -0.16, p= 0.028), head circumference (β= -0.13, p= 0.004), ponderal index (β= -0.32, p= 0.011) and fat-free mass (β= -0.05, p= 0.005). However, the association persisted just for head circumference (β= -0.26; p= 0.030) and ponderal index (β= - 0.28; p= 0.028), after adjusting for pre-gestational BMI, gestational weight gain, gestational age, hours after delivery, newborn sex, smoking and alcohol consumption. Conclusions Maternal plasma TGF-β1 concentration may be involved in the regulation of newborn size, mainly head circumference and ponderal index. Further cohort studies are necessary to investigate the role of TGF-β1 in different trimesters of pregnancy and its effect during the early stages of fetal development.

Abstract Background Despite previous studies indicating a moderate/high incidence of angiography headache (AH), there is still limited data about the risk factors associated with its occurrence. Objective The present study aimed to assess the associations among demographic, clinical, and technical characteristics of cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and the occurrence of AH. Methods Cross-sectional analytical observational study with a sample comprised of individuals with a recommendation for elective DSA. Clinical interviews were conducted to assess the occurrence of AH, using a standardized questionnaire. Results Among 114 subjects, the mean age was 52.8 (±13.8) years old, 75.4% (86/114) were women, 29.8% (34/114) had a history of migraines, and 10.5% (12/114) had chronic headaches. The overall frequency of AH was 45.6% (52/114). Of those, 88.4% (46/52) underwent 3D angiography, 7.7% (4/52) underwent aortography, and 1.9% (1/52) underwent both procedures. There was a statistically significant association between AH and previous history of migraine (odds ratio [OR]: 4.9; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.62–14.7; p = 0.005) and 3D angiography (OR 6.62; 95%CI: 2.04–21.5; p = 0.002). Conclusions 3D angiography is strongly associated with the occurrence of AH, which has never been reported before. The association between a previous history of migraine and AH confirms the results of previous studies.

Resumo Antecedentes Apesar de estudos prévios indicarem uma incidência moderada/alta de cefaleia da angiografia (CA), os dados sobre os fatores de risco associados à sua ocorrência ainda são relativamente escassos. Objetivo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as associações entre as características demográficas, clínicas e técnicas da angiografia cerebral por subtração digital (ACSD) e a ocorrência de CA. Métodos Estudo observacional analítico transversal com uma amostra composta por indivíduos com indicação de ACSD em caráter eletivo. Entrevistas clínicas foram realizadas utilizando um questionário padronizado para acessar a ocorrência de CA. Resultados Entre os 114 indivíduos, a idade média foi de 52,8 (±13,8) anos, 75,4% (86/114) eram mulheres, 29,8% (34/114) tinham histórico de enxaqueca e 10,5% (12/114) tinham cefaleia crônica. A frequência geral de CA foi de 45,6% (52/114). Desses, 88,4% (46/52) foram submetidos à angiografia 3D, 7,7% (4/52), à aortografia e 1,9% (1/52), aos dois procedimentos. Houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre CA e histórico prévio de enxaqueca (odds ratio [OR] 4,9; intervalo de confiança [IC] 95%: 1,62–14,7; p = 0,005) e angiografia 3D (OR 6,62; IC95%: 2,04–21,5; p = 0,002). Conclusões A angiografia 3D está fortemente associada à ocorrência de CA, o que é inédito na literatura. A associação entre um histórico de enxaqueca e a CA confirma os resultados de estudos anteriores.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are important aspects of the disease’s pathogenesis and prognosis. Evidence on the prognostic role of troponin and myocardial injury in Latin American hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still scarce. Objectives To evaluate myocardial injury as independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized patients, from the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry. Methods This cohort study is a substudy of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, conducted in 31 Brazilian hospitals of 17 cities, March-September 2020. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support. Models for the primary outcomes were estimated by Poisson regression with robust variance, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results Of 2,925 patients (median age of 60 years [48-71], 57.1% men), 27.3% presented myocardial injury. The proportion of patients with comorbidities was higher among patients with cardiac injury (median 2 [1-2] vs. 1 [0-2]). Patients with myocardial injury had higher median levels of brain natriuretic peptide, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein than patients without myocardial injury. As independent predictors, C-reactive protein and platelet counts were related to the risk of death, and neutrophils and platelet counts were related to the risk of invasive mechanical ventilation support. Patients with high troponin levels presented a higher risk of death (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.60-2.58) and invasive mechanical ventilation support (RR 1.87, 95% CI 1.57-2.23), when compared to those with normal troponin levels. Conclusion Cardiac injury was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Resumo Fundamento As complicações cardiovasculares da COVID-19 são aspectos importantes da patogênese e do prognóstico da doença. Evidências do papel prognóstico da troponina e da lesão miocárdica em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 na América Latina são ainda escassos. Objetivos Avaliar a lesão miocárdica como preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados, do registro brasileiro de COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo coorte é um subestudo do registro brasileiro de COVID-19, conduzido em 31 hospitais brasileiros de 17 cidades, de março a setembro de 2020. Os desfechos primários incluíram mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os modelos para os desfechos primários foram estimados por regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, com significância estatística de p<0,05. Resultados Dos 2925 pacientes [idade mediana de 60 anos (48-71), 57,1%], 27,3% apresentaram lesão miocárdica. A proporção de pacientes com comorbidades foi maior nos pacientes com lesão miocárdica [mediana 2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-20)]. Os pacientes com lesão miocárdica apresentaram maiores valores medianos de peptídeo natriurético cerebral, lactato desidrogenase, creatina fosfoquinase, N-terminal do pró-peptídeo natriurético tipo B e proteína C reativa em comparação a pacientes sem lesão miocárdica. Como fatores independentes, proteína C reativa e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados com o risco de morte, e neutrófilos e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados ao risco de suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os pacientes com níveis elevados de troponina apresentaram um maior risco de morte (RR 2,03, IC95% 1,60-2,58) e suporte ventilatório mecânico (RR 1,87;IC95% 1,57-2,23), em comparação àqueles com níveis de troponina normais. Conclusão Lesão cardíaca foi um preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e necessidade de suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19.

BACKGROUND Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that has been causing large outbreaks in the Americas since 2014. In Brazil, Asian-Caribbean (AC) and East-Central-South-African (ECSA) genotypes have been detected and lead to large outbreaks in several Brazilian states. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the southernmost state of Brazil, the first cases were reported in 2016. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS We employed genome sequencing and epidemiological investigation to characterise the Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) burden in RS between 2017-2021. FINDINGS We detected an increasing CHIKF burden linked to travel associated introductions and communitary transmission of distinct lineages of the ECSA genotype during this period. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Until 2020, CHIKV introductions were most travel associated and transmission was limited. Then, in 2021, the largest outbreak occurred in the state associated with the introduction of a new ECSA lineage. CHIKV outbreaks are likely to occur in the near future due to abundant competent vectors and a susceptible population, exposing more than 11 million inhabitants to an increasing infection risk.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to isolate Toxoplasma gondii from tissues of free-range chickens in the southwestern region of Goiás, to detect and molecularly characterize the genetic material of the parasite, and to determine the seroprevalence of the protozoan parasite in these animals. A seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies of 76% (19/25) was found among the chickens, while genetic material from their tissues was detected in 56% (14/25). A total of 14 isolates was obtained in the bioassay, ten of which were considered acute, eight were considered isolates of high virulence lethal to mice, and four of low virulence, considered non-lethal but with the ability to chronify the infection. Seven of the ten isolates showed significant morphometric differences from the RH strain, in terms of nucleus-complex-apical distance, length and width. Genotyping of the acute isolates was performed by RFLP-PCR, using 11 genetic markers: SAG1, SAG2 (3’SAG2 and 5’SAG2), alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and APICO. The results were compared and classified according to the genotypes listed on the ToxoDB Platform, where different profiles were observed indicating the presence of two known genotypes (#7 and #63) and five new genotypes (NEW 3, NEW4, NEW5, NEW6, NEW 7). The results showed high seroprevalence, isolation rate, molecular detection and genotypic variations of T. gondii in free-range chickens in the southwestern region of Goiás.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi isolar Toxoplasma gondii de tecidos de galinhas caipiras da região sudoeste de Goiás, detectar e caracterizar molecularmente o material genético do parasito e determinar a soroprevalência do protozoário nestes animais. A soropositividade para anticorpos anti- T. gondii, nas galinhas caipiras, foi de 76% (19/25), enquanto a detecção do material genético dos tecidos foi de 56% (14/25). Por meio do bioensaio foi obtido um total de 14 isolados, sendo 10 agudos, dos quais oito foram considerados isolados de elevada virulência, sendo letais para camundongos; e quatro de baixa virulência, com capacidade de cronificar a infecção, considerados não letais. Em sete dos dez isolados foram identificadas diferenças morfométricas significativas em relação à cepa RH, quanto à distância núcleo-complexo apical, comprimento e largura. A genotipagem dos isolados agudos por RFLP-PCR foi realizada, utilizando-se 11 marcadores genéticos SAG1, SAG2 (3´SAG2 e 5´SAG2), alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, APICO. Os resultados foram comparados e classificados de acordo com os genótipos presentes na Plataforma ToxoDB, nos quais diferentes perfis foram observados indicando a presença de dois genótipos conhecidos (#7 e #63) e cinco genótipos novos (NEW 3, NEW4, NEW5, NEW6, NEW 7). Os resultados demonstraram elevada soroprevalência, taxa de isolamento, detecção molecular e variações genotípicas de T. gondii em galinhas caipiras da região sudoeste de Goiás.

Abstract This article evaluates the resilient modulus and permanent deformation of granular materials of different lithological origins widely used as a pavements base layer in south Brazil. For this, a single particle size distribution was determined for the materials that were subjected to physical, chemical, mechanical characterizations, especially resilient modulus and permanent deformation by repeated load triaxial tests. It was noticed that the denser materials had a higher resilient modulus generated by increase in the sample's stiffness. For permanent deformation this tendency has not been maintained for all materials. Therefore, the granulation and structure of the materials can influence long-term tests. The Guimarães’ model has proven to be adequate for the sample evaluation. For the shakedown research, samples showed accommodation and creep shakedown. The samples that presented accommodation had an increase in the resilient modulus after permanent deformation, while those that presented creep increased or decreased resilient modulus according to the material origin. RESUMO: Objetivou-se analisar as alterações demográficas e biométricas dos animais registrados da raça Mangalarga, ao longo das décadas. Foram utilizadas informações de 206.428 equinos Mangalarga, extraídas do sistema de registro genealógico da Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Cavalos da Raça Mangalarga. Dos animais nascidos entre 1930 e 2018, foram consideradas informações referentes ao sexo, data de nascimento, pelagem, localização do criatório, pontuação obtida no ato do registro genealógico e três medidas corporais dos equinos. Utilizando a medida de altura à cernelha e os perímetros torácico e de canela foram calculados cinco índices morfométricos. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância, utilizando delineamento inteiramente ao acaso em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas compostas pelos sexos e as subparcelas constituídas pelas décadas de seleção. Entre 1930 e 1990 houve aumento progressivo na emissão de registros genealógicos, com destaque para as décadas de 70 e 80, quando se registrou maior taxa de crescimento do rebanho. Em 2018 identificou-se criatórios da raça Mangalarga em 23 estados brasileiros, sendo o Estado de São Paulo detentor do maior rebanho, seguido de Minas Gerais e Bahia. Entre 1970 e 2018 registrou-se aumento na altura à cernelha das fêmeas, garanhões e machos castrados, que se tornaram 5,1 cm, 3,1 cm e 2,1 cm mais altos, respectivamente. Enquanto o perímetro torácico dos garanhões aumentou 3,3 cm, o perímetro de canela das fêmeas reduziu 0,34 cm. Concluiu-se que a raça Mangalarga está distribuída por todo o Brasil, com destaque para a região sudeste. Independente do sexo, a seleção aplicada à raça tornou os equinos Mangalarga mais altos. Além disso, os garanhões ficaram mais pesados e com maior perímetro torácico e as fêmeas tornaram-se hipométricas.

ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the demographic and biometric changes in registered animals of the Mangalarga breed over the decades. Information from 206,428 Mangalarga horses born between 1930 and 2018 extracted from the genealogic registry system of the Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Cavalos da Raça Mangalarga was employed. The data referred to sex, birth date, fur coat, breeding site location, score achieved at genealogic registration, and three body measurements. Height at withers and the thoracic and cannon bone circumferences were used to calculate five morphometric indices. Results were submitted to analysis of variance using a completely randomized split-plot design where the plots comprised the sexes and the split-plots comprised the decades of selection. Between 1930 and 1990, genealogic registrations progressively increased, particularly in the 1970s and 80s, when the herd experienced the highest growth rate. In 2018, Mangalarga breeding sites were reported in 23 Brazilian states and the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Bahia held the largest herds. Between 1970 and 2018, the height at withers of mares, stallions, and geldings increased by 5.1, 3.1, and 2.1 cm, respectively. The thoracic circumference of stallions increased by 3.3 cm and the cannon bone circumference of mares decreased by 0.34 cm. It is concluded that the Mangalarga breed is found across Brazil, especially in the Southeast region. Irrespective of sex, the selection of the breed has led to taller Mangalarga horses. In addition, the stallions became heavier and gained thoracic circumference, while mares became hypometric.

Resumo O “Nanicão Corupá” (Musa acuminata) é proveniente do sul do Brasil. Em função do clima tropical na região a banana apresenta características diferenciadas incluindo o sabor mais doce. Essa diferença resultou em um Reconhecimento de Indicação Geográfica e Denominação de Origem, reconhecido pelo Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (INPI) no Brasil. Considerando que o Nanicão Corupá possui importantes peculiaridades e que não existem estudos que avaliaram este cultivar, o objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a composição fenólica qualitativa e quantitativa das partes aéreas da banana (flores, folhas, frutos e caule) de Corupá por HPLC-ESI-MS/MS em comparação com 46 padrões de compostos fenólicos. As partes aéreas de Nanicão Corupá foram coletados e macerados em metanol, separadamente. Os extratos obtidos foram particionados com solventes de diferentes polaridades (diclorometano e acetato de etila). Os resultados demonstraram que um total de 11 compostos fenólicos foram identificados nas amostras analisadas. Os compostos majoritários foram identificados na fração de acetato de etila das flores de banana (BFEF): rutina (36,06 ± 0,23) e isoquercetina (28,83 ± 5). Os compostos Isoquercetina, Naringerina e Micricitrina foram identificados pela primeira vez no gênero Musa. Este é o primeiro estudo que identificou compostos fenólicos em Nanicão Corupá.

Abstract “Nanicão Corupá” (Musa acuminata) comes from Southern Brazil. The tropical climate in the region provides unique characteristics, including a sweeter flavor. This difference resulted in a Geographical Indication Recognition and Designation of Origin, recognized by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in Brazil. Considering that “Nanicão Corupá” has some peculiarities related to the climate and there are no studies evaluating this banana cultivars, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the qualitative and quantitative phenolic composition of the aerial parts of “Nanicão Corupá” by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS in comparison to 46 commercial standards of phenolic compounds. Aerial parts (flower, leaves, fruit and stem) of “Nanicão Corupá” were collected and macerated in methanolic extracts, which were partitioned with solvents of different polarities (dichloromethane and ethyl acetate). The HPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis was performed using the sample pre-treatment, chromatographic and mass spectrometer parameters. Results demonstrated that a total of 11 phenolic compounds were identified in the analyzed samples. The majority of compounds was identified in the ethyl acetate fraction (BFEF) of banana flowers: rutin (36.06 ± 0.23) and isoquercetin (28.83 ± 5). The compounds isoquercetin, naringerin and myricitrin were identified for the first time in the Musa genus.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic brought abrupt changes when quarantine measures were implemented. Most medical students had distance learning as their main content delivery mode, but in clerkship (fifth and sixth years), in-person activities were maintained under new protocols. These different modes may have affected student mental health. This study examines mental burden and empathy in medical students during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic according to the year of attendance. METHODS: All students attending first to the sixth year in the same medical school were invited to participate. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) were provided. RESULTS: HADS scores for Anxiety and Depression (n=347) were 9.8±4.3 and 7.1±3.6, respectively; the SRQ-20 (n=373) score was 8.1±4.5; all scores were negatively correlated with the year of attendance. IRI (n=373) scores were: 2.6±0.5 (Empathic Concern), 2.7±0.7 (Perspective Taking), 2.5±0.9 (Fantasy), and 1.7±0.7 (Personal Distress). Fantasy was negatively correlated with the year of attendance. MAAS scores were positively correlated with the year of attendance. Worse mental health scores were found for first-year students across all scales. CONCLUSIONS: We found high levels of mental burden in medical students in the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in first-year students, who may have fewer resources to deal with stress. Moreover, as they entered college a short time before the pandemic, they were unable to experience academic life fully or create important new social support networks to deal with adversities.

Abstract Two types of Epstein Barr virus (EBV1/EBV2) have been shown to infect humans. Although their genomes are similar, the regions containing the EBNA genes differ. This study aimed to characterize the EBV genotypes of infectious mononucleosis (IM) cases in the metropolitan region of Belém, Brazil, from 2005 to 2016. A total of 8295 suspected cases with symptoms/signs of IM were investigated by infectious disease physicians at Evandro Chagas Institute, Health Care Service, from January 2005 to December 2016. Out of the total, 1645 (19.8%) samples had positive results for EBV by enzyme immunoassay and 251 (15.3%) were submitted to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, using the EBNA3C region, in order to determine the type of EBV. Biochemical testing involving aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transferase were also performed. EBV type was identified by PCR in 30.3% (76/251) of individuals; of those, 71.1% (54/76) were classified as EBV1, 17.1% (13/76) as EBV2, and 11.8% (9/76) as EBV1+EBV2. The main symptoms/signs observed with EBV1 infection were cervical lymphadenopathy (64.8%, 35/54), fever (63%, 34/54), headache (20.4%, 11/54), arthralgia (20.4%, 11/54), and exanthema (18.5%, 10/54). EBV2 infection was detected in all but two age groups, with an average age of 24 years. The most common signs/symptoms of EBV2 were fever (76.9%, 10/13), average duration of 18 days, and lymphadenopathy (69.2%, 9/13). In contrast, EBV1+EBV2 coinfections were more frequent in those aged five years or less (20.0%, 2/10). The symptoms of EBV1+EBV2 coinfection included fever (66.7%, 6/9), and cervical lymphadenopathy and headache (33.3%, 3/9) each. The mean values of hepatic enzymes according to type of EBV was significantly different (p<0.05) in those EBV1 infected over 14 years of age. Thus, this pioneering study, using molecular methods, identified the EBV genotypes in 30.3% of the samples, with circulation of EBV1, EBV2, and EBV1+EBV2 co-infection in cases of infectious mononucleosis in the northern region of Brazil.

RESUMO Sistemas integrados de produção agropecuária (SIPA) com consórcios na fase pastagem promovem alterações na dinâmica de atributos dos solos, entre eles a atividade enzimática. Objetivou-se avaliar as atividades microbiana e enzimática do solo, após implantação de SIPA com aumento da diversidade de plantas na fase pastagem. O estudo consistiu no cultivo de soja na safra e pasto com diferentes níveis de diversidade na safrinha: muito baixa - Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Paiaguás cultivado solteiro sem entrada de animais; baixa - Paiaguás em cultivo solteiro; média - Paiaguás e feijão caupi (Vigna unguiculata); alta - Paiaguás, feijão caupi e niger (Guizotia abyssinica); muito alta - Paiaguás, feijão caupi, niger, trigo mourisco (Fogopyrum esculentum) e nabo forrageiro (Raphanus sativus). A introdução de plantas de diferentes famílias, associadas ao pastejo, afetaram positivamente as atividades enzimáticas da fosfatase ácida, β-glicosidase e urease. Em relação aos atributos carbono da biomassa microbiana e respiração basal, não houve efeito dos tratamentos. Portanto, dentre os atributos bioquímicos do solo avaliados, as atividades de algumas enzimas do solo foram mais sensíveis em demonstrar, em curto período de tempo, os efeitos positivos do aumento da diversidade de plantas na fase de pastagem do SIPA.

ABSTRACT Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) intercropped in the pasture phase promote alterations in the dynamics of soil attributes, among them the enzymatic activity. This study aimed to evaluate soil enzymatic and microbial activities, following the implementation of ICLS with increased plant diversity during the pasture phase. The study consisted of soybean cultivation at season and pasture with different diversity levels in the off-season: very low - monocropped Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Paiaguás with no animal entry; low - monocropped Paiaguás; medium - Paiaguás and cowpea bean (Vigna unguiculata); high - Paiaguás, cowpea bean and niger (Guizotia abyssinica); very high - Paiaguás, cowpea bean, niger, buckwheat (Fogopyrum esculentum) and forage turnip (Raphanus sativus). The introduction of plants from different families, associated to grazing, positively affected the enzymatic activities of acid phosphatase, β-glucosidase and urease. In relation to microbial biomass carbon and basal respiration, there were no effects from the treatments. Therefore, among the evaluated biochemical soil attributes, the activities of some soil enzymes were more sensitive in demonstrating, in the short term, the positive effects of the increased plant variety in the ICLS pasture phase.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a incidência de hemoglobinas variantes em diferentes regiões de saúde. Métodos Estudo descritivo, observacional e transversal com abordagem quantitativa baseada em dados secundários presentes nos registros internos do serviço de triagem neonatal do Laboratório Central de Saúde Pública do Estado do Piauí (PI, Brasil). Foram analisadas as variáveis referentes a sexo, etnia e diagnóstico positivo para hemoglobinas variantes, com posterior distribuição populacional das hemoglobinopatias entre as macrorregiões do Estado. Resultados Foram analisadas 69.180 amostras de recém-nascidos, e 3.747 diagnosticados com hemoglobinopatias, entre 1° de fevereiro de 2014 e 31 de dezembro de 2015. Constatou-se maior ocorrência do traço falciforme em 4,1% da amostra e da hemoglobinopatia C em 0,9%, com destaque para os casos de hemoglobina S em homozigose (0,1%) e ausência de hemoglobinopatia D no Estado. Destacou-se, ainda, o fato de as maiores frequências de alteração hemoglobínica do Piauí estarem presentes em recém-nascidos do sexo masculino (49,8%) e de etnia parda (38,5%). As regiões do Piauí que apresentaram as maiores incidências de hemoglobinas variantes em heterozigose foram Tabuleiros do Alto Parnaíba e Vale do Sambito, devendo-se ressaltar a relevância populacional da região Entre Rios. Conclusão Os programas de triagem neonatal são importantes para rastreamento, orientação de ações de saúde e acompanhamento de famílias acometidas com hemoglobinopatias, a fim de diminuir a morbimortalidade provocada por estas patologias.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the incidence of variant hemoglobins in different health regions. Methods A descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach based on secondary data in the internal records of the neonatal screening service - Laboratório Central de Saúde Pública do Estado do Piauí (PI, Brazil). The variables related to sex, ethnicity and positive diagnosis for variant hemoglobins were analyzed, with further population distribution of hemoglobinopathies among the macroregions of the state. Results A total of 69,180 samples of newborns were analyzed, and 3,747 were diagnosed as hemoglobinopathies, from February 1st, 2014 and December 31st, 2015. Sickle cell trait was the most frequent (4.1%), followed by hemoglobinopathy C in 0.9%; homozygous hemoglobin S cases 0.1% stood out and there were no cases of hemoglobinopathy D in the state. It is also worth noting that the highest frequencies of hemoglobin alterations in Piauí were in males (49.8%) and of parda skin color (38.5%). The region of Piauí presenting the highest incidence of heteroygous variant hemoglobins was Tabuleiros do Alto Parnaíba and Vale do Sambito, due to importance of the region's population Entre Rios. Conclusion Neonatal screening programs are important for screening, orientations regarding health actions and monitoring of families with hemoglobinopathies, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever e analisar o perfil de escrita de 12 adultos em fase de alfabetização. Métodos: participaram 12 alunos de ambos os sexos, matriculados no Programa Educação de Jovens e Adultos - EJA de uma escola pública municipal de um município de médio porte do interior do estado de São Paulo. O estudo foi dividido em duas etapas: apresentação da proposta ao participante; aplicação do subteste de escrita do Teste de Desempenho Escolar para avaliar a fase da escrita e o tipo de erro cometido por cada um dos participantes. Resultados: a maior parte das produções foi classificada na fase alfabética (critério estabelecido por Ferreiro e Teberosk). Os erros mais frequentes foram: omissões de grafemas e apoio na oralidade. Conclusão: os resultados denotam a necessidade de realização de um trabalho focado na aquisição do princípio alfabético, o qual permite a escrita inicial pela rota fonológica e também para a necessidade de se trabalhar a diferença entre a norma culta da língua e aquela coloquialmente utilizada no cotidiano.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to describe and analyze the writing profile of 12 adults in the literacy phase. Methods: 12 students of both genders enrolled in the Youth and Adult Education Program (EJA) of public school in a medium-sized city in the state of São Paulo. The study was divided into two stages: proposal presentation to participants and School Performance Test assessment to evaluate the writing phase and the type of error presented by each participant. Results: the majority of the results belonged to the alphabetical phase (criterion established by Ferreiro and Teberosky). The most frequent errors were grapheme omissions and oral support. Conclusion: results indicated the need to focus on the alphabetic principle acquisition, which allows the initial writing by the phonological route, and to work the differences between standard and colloquial language.
