ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify morphological characteristics of different populations of Penaeus schmittiBurkenroad, 1936 to contribute to its biology and conservation. In order to compare geographically isolated populations, between 2014 and 2016, selected biological variables were analyzed in six populations dispersed along the Brazilian coast and one from the Cuban coast. Specimens with eight upper rostral teeth predominated. The ordination of shrimp measurements by non-metric multidimensional scaling showed the greatest dispersion on data from Cuba, Rio Grande do Norte, and Espirito Santo, which are also the localities that presented the highest coefficient of variation. On the other hand, the values corresponding to Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Santa Catarina showed a greater similarity or clustering of the data of each location. Tail weight was estimated using length and depth of the sixth abdominal segment. The populations of Santa Catarina, Brazil (28°S), had the longest and heavier abdomens proportionally among all the compared populations, while the organisms of Manzanillo, Cuba (20°N), had proportionally shorter abdomens and the narrowest cephalothorax. The regression equation indicated a positive allometric growth for P. schmitti, and the largest total length reported for genus Penaeus in the natural environment corresponded to a P. schmitti specimen. This information could be useful in future taxonomic studies to correctly identify the species and its morphological variability. Color differences were also observed, with white ventral spots in the sternite XIV of some females from Brazilian populations, which was not previously reported in the literature. Extending these studies is recommended to contribute to the conservation and culture of P. schmitti.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Several gramineous plants occurring in rice fields show symptoms of crown sheath rot of rice, caused by Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis (Ggg), under natural conditions of infection. The pathogenicity of the Ggg-a 01 isolate, collected from rice, was tested on seven grass species and eight cereals, under greenhouse conditions, in order to get information on host-range and resistance of rice genotypes to crown sheath rot. The inoculation tests showed that the rice isolate was pathogenic to weeds such as Echinochloa crusgalli, Pennisetum setosum, Brachiaria sp., Digitaria horizontalis, Brachiaria plantaginea, Eleusine indica and Cenchrus echinatus, and that these species are potential hosts to the pathogen. Winter cereals such as wheat, oat, rye, barley and triticale, as well as sorghum, maize and millet, presented different degrees of susceptibility to the Ggg-a isolate. Significant differences were observed in relation to lesion height and production of hyphopodia and perithecia on culms. Perithecia were not observed on millet, sorghum, southern sandbur and maize. The resistance of 58 upland rice genotypes was tested, and the SCIA16 and SCIA08 genotypes presented lesion height significantly smaller, being considered resistant, when compared to the highly susceptible CNAS10351 genotype.

Five banana cultivars resistant to the Black Sigatoka Disease were grown at the experimental field of the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), located in the Southwest region of the State of Goiás (Brazil). This work aimed the introduction of Black Sigatoka resistant cultivars as well as the characterization of the morphological aspects of such cultivars at that climatic region. The following characteristics were evaluated, in the first three cycles: days between planting and flowering, leaf number at flowering and at harvesting, fruit and hand number per bunch and fruit number per hand. A canonical variable analysis was also done, by the Tocher method. The evaluated characteristics were similar during the three growing seasons, insuring the morphological characterization of such genotypes in this climatic region. The cultivars false FHIA 18 and Caipira were harvested 393 days after planting data, showing highest precocity among the other cultivars. As expected, FHIA 21, a plantain type cultivar, showed the highest growing cycle (488 days after planting data). The climatic condition and the elevation of that experimental area may have helped to increase the growing cycle of those cultivars when in comparison to other climatic regions. For the harvesting characteristics, the cultivars FHIA-01 and false FHIA-18 promoted the best results compared to the other ones. For hand number, the cultivar Thap Maeo had the best results during the three growing seasons, establishing that morphological characteristic for that genotype. Plant height at flowering was highest for FHIA-21 and Thap Maeo and both cultivars were mostly damaged by hard winds.
