RESUMO Espécies de Thysanoptera podem transmitir vírus para vegetais da família Solanaceae, incluindo plantas de tomate para processamento industrial, causando a doença vira-cabeça do tomateiro (TSWV). A resistência dos tripes a inseticidas indica a necessidade urgente de técnicas adequadas às práticas de Manejo Integrado de Pragas. O objetivo foi avaliar a eficiência de controle (CE%) de Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) com o fungo Beauveria bassiana (Bb), o indutor de resistência silicato de potássio (KSil) e o inseticida químico profenofós + cipermetrina (PC) isolados, ou em misturas binárias. Os tratamentos foram aplicados via foliar nas plantas de tomate com Bb (T1), KSil (T2) e PC (T3) isolados ou em misturas binárias Bb+KSil (T4), PC+KSil (T5) e Bb+PC (T6). Os tripes foram amostrados com bandejas plásticas aos 0, 1, 7, 14 e 21 dias após a aplicação (daa). A CE% de cada produto (isolado ou em misturas) diferiu em todos os intervalos de tempo. O tratamento Bb+KSil teve alta CE% desde as primeiras 24 horas da aplicação até o final do período experimental, variando entre 95% (1 daa) a 41,5% (21 daa). A CE% diminuiu em todos os tratamentos com um comportamento quadrático ao longo do tempo. O inseticida PC, isolado, apresentou uma diminuição para a CE% através de uma regressão linear. Análises de agrupamento indicaram que o efeito do Bb+KSil foi mais heterogêneo do que o dos outros tratamentos avaliados. O sinergismo entre Bb e KSil, em mistura, indica seu potencial em programas de Manejo Integrado de Pragas de F. schultzei em plantas de tomate para processamento industrial.

ABSTRACT Thysanoptera species can transmit virus to Solanaceae family vegetables, including tomato plants for industrial processing, causing the disease known as Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV). Thrips resistance to insecticides indicate the urgent need of techniques adequate for Integrate Pest Management practices. The objective was to evaluate the control efficiency (CE%) against Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) of the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bb), the resistance inducer potassium silicate (KSil) and the chemical insecticide profenophos + cypermethrin (PC) isolated, or in binary mixtures. The treatments were foliar spraying on tomato plants with Bb (T1), KSil (T2) and PC (T3) isolated or in mixtures of Bb+KSil (T4), PC+KSil (T5) and Bb+PC (T6). Thrips were sampled with white plastic trays at 0, 1, 7, 14 and 21 days after application (daa). The CE% of each product (isolated or in mixtures) differed at all time intervals. The Bb+KSil treatment had highest CE% from 24 hours of application, until the end of the experiment, ranging from 95% (1 daa) to 41.5% (21 daa). The CE% decreased in all treatments with a quadratic curve behavior, throughout time. PC insecticide, isolated, showed a decreased CE% through a linear regression. Grouping analyzes indicated the Bb+KSil effect was more dissimilar than the other evaluated treatments. Synergism between Bb and KSil, in mixture, indicate its potential for Integrated Pest Management programs of F. schultzei in tomato plants for industrial processing.

Abstract Abstract: The dispersion capacity is fundamental to establish a biological control program with parasitoids. This information is used to determine the efficiency and the number of release points. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine the dispersion and to estimate the number of release points of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), in sweet corn, cucumber and cabbage in the Ceará State. The experiments were carried out in areas of maize with four leaf pairs (V4) and eight leaves pair (V8), stacked and cabbage. Unviable eggs of an alternative host were distributed in concentric circles of radius 2.5; 5.0; 9.0 and 12.0 m. Mean dispersal distance in the V4 stage maize was 4.7 m with a dispersion area of 48.6 m2, parasitism index of 18.4%, requiring 206 points/ha. In the V8 stage maize, the mean distance was 5.9 m, dispersion area of 60.3 m², mean parasitism index of 22.7% and 166 release points/ha. For the cucumber culture the mean distance was 6.0 m, dispersion area 62.2 m², mean parasitism index of 21.1% and 161 release points/ha. For cabbage the mean distance was 5.6 m, dispersion area of 56.8 m², mean parasitism index of 22.1% and 176 release points/ha.

Since the biological activity of [RuIII(NH3)4(catechol)]+ has never been tested, its cytotoxicity to glial cells was assayed and correlated with its redox properties. Coordinated catechol oxidizes faster than catechol in the presence of oxygen, but controlled potential electrolysis showed that its oxidation involves only one-electron. However, the oxidation of the free ligand by oxygen involves two electrons, which could generate more reactive oxygen species. Indeed, catechol was more cytotoxic than [RuIII(NH3)4(catechol)]+ complex to human glioblastoma GL-15 cells and also to rat astrocytes. [RuIII(NH3)4(catechol)]+-induced cytotoxicity was related to the generation of reactive oxygen species and [RuC1(NH3)5]2+. However, other mechanisms should be involved since antioxidant enzymes and deferoxamine only partially protected GL-15 cells

Neste trabalho, estudou-se o efeito do número de adultos de Trichogramma galloi Zucchi, 1988 liberados em semanas sucessivas, para o controle de Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794). O experimento foi conduzido em março de 2003, com a cultivar SP 79-1011, de quatro meses de idade. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado. Foram demarcadas quatro subáreas de 400 m² cada (20 m x 20 m), eqüidistantes 20 m. Cada parcela foi infestada artificialmente uma vez por semana com 20 casais de D. saccharalis (dois casais por gaiola, correspondendo a dez repetições por tratamento). Cada repetição correspondeu aos diferentes pontos de infestação. Repetiu-se esse procedimento por três semanas consecutivas, obtendo-se as posturas. Liberou-se T. galloi nas primeiras 24 horas após a infestação, no centro de cada uma das subáreas, nas seguintes quantidades (tratamentos): a- ausência de liberação (testemunha); b- 4.000 adultos (100.000 T. galloi/ha); c- 8.000 adultos (200.000 T. galloi/ha) e 10.000 adultos (250.000 T. galloi/ha). Com este trabalho ficou evidenciado que as liberações realizadas em áreas infestadas com ovos de D. saccharalis, em três semanas consecutivas, proporcionaram níveis elevados de parasitismoe que as melhores taxas de liberação de T. galloi para o controle de D. saccharalis, ficaram entre 150.000 e 175.000 parasitóides/ha.

This research aimed to study the effect of Trichogramma galloi Zucchi, 1988 adults released by successive weeks, on the control of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794). The experiment was carried out on a sugarcane cultivar SP 79-1011, four months-old. An experimental design entirely randomized was adopted. The experiments were conducted in four subareas of 400 m² (20 m x 20 m) separated by 20 m from each other. The experimental plots were artificially infested with twenty D. saccharalis couples once a week (two couples for cage, corresponding a ten repetition per treatment). T. galloi adults were released weekly, in the first 24 hour after infestation, in the center of each one of the subareas, as follows: a- Control (no release); b- 4,000 adults (100,000 T. galloi/hectare); c- 8,000 adults (200,000 T. galloi/hectare); d- 10,000 adults (250,000 T. galloi/hectare). The results evidenced that the amount of parasitoids released in consecutive weeks at areas infested with eggs of D. saccharalis may still maintain high levels of parasitism. The best release rates of T. galloi were between 150,000 and 175,000 parasitoids adults per hectare per week.

A estimulação de dupla câmara (DDD) com eletrodo único usando eletrodo atrial flutuante está limitada em função dos altos limiares encontrados para captura atrial. Avaliamos um sistema novo de cabo eletrodo para estimulação atrial que utiliza dois anéis atriais com pulsos de onda quadrada simultâneos unipolares lançados com polaridade oposta. O primeiro pulso é aplicado ao pólo distal do eletrodo e é positivo, o segundo pulso é aplicado ao pólo proximal do eletrodo e é negativo, ambos em relação à carcaça do gerador. O atraso entre os dois pulsos é programável entre 0,0 ms e 1,0 ms. A distância entre os anéis a nível atrial é de 10 mm e a distância entre o pólo distal atrial e o eletrodo ventricular unipolar pode ser selecionado entre 11, 13 e 15 cm. O posicionamento dos anéis a nível atrial é selecionado de acordo com a medida do limiar de estimulação do pulso bifásico simultâneo, incluindo manobras respiratórias para confirmar a captura/sense contínuos. O gerador de pulso tem uma única conexão para o eletrodo e a capacidade de aplicar os pulsos programáveis de onda quadrada com polaridades opostas, com atrasos programáveis de 0,0 a 1,0 ms. O gerador pode ser programado para estimulação VDD com eletrodo único. Este sistema foi implantado em 4 pacientes com bloqueio AV total e função sinusal normal. Os limiares de estimulação atrial e diafragmático foram medidos com várias configurações do pulso, larguras e atrasos, intra e pós-operatórios. A porção média do átrio direito foi selecionada como a melhor posição para os anéis atriais com captura contínua durante inspiração profunda. As medidas intra-operatórias e pós-operatórias (48 horas) foram: Limiar Intra-operatório Pós-operatório atrial unipolar 3,2 + 0,47 V não realizada atrial (bifásico simultâneo) 1,6 + 0,37 V 3,37 + 0,84 V diafragmático acima de 7 V 5,21 + 0,3 V sense de onda P 2,35 + 1,3 mV 1,27 + 0,8 mV Os pacientes tiveram alta com o gerador programado no modo VDD. A evolução de 30 dias após o implante mostrou perda de captura atrial transitória durante inspiração em 1 paciente, apesar da ausência de outras variações no limiar, comparado com a evolução de 48 horas pós implante. Em conclusão, a estimulação bifásica simultânea reduz o limiar de estimulação atrial, ao mesmo tempo em que mantém o sense atrial adequado com uma margem de segurança em relação à estimulação diafragmática.

Single lead, dual chamber (DDD) pacing with an atrial floating electrode is limited by high atrial capture thresholds. We evaluated a new atrial stimulation lead with two atrial ring electrodes on a single lead and overlapping unipolar square wave pulses of an opposite polarity. The first pulse is applied to the distal electrode and is positive, the second pulse is to the proximal electrode and is negative, both with respect to the pacemaker housing. The delay between the two pulses is programmable between 0.0 ms to 1.0 ms. The distance between the atrial electrode rings is 10 mm and the distance from the distal atrial ring to the unipolar ventricular electrode can be selected to be 11, 13 or 15 cm. The positioning of the atrial ring is selected according to the measured overlapping biphasic pulse thresholds, including respiratory maneuvers to confirm continuous capture/sensing. The pulse generator has a single lead connection and the capability of delivering the two atrial square wave opposite programmable pulses, with delays from 0.0 to 1.0 ms. The generator may be programmed to the single lead unipolar VDD mode. This system was implanted in 4 patients with complete AV block with normal sinus mode fuction. Atrial and diaphragmatic thresholds for various pulse configurations, widths and delays were measured intra and postoperatively. The midportion of RA was selected as the best location for the atrial rings with continuous capture during deep inspiration. The intra and postoperative (48hrs) measurements were: Threshold Intra-op POstop. (48hrs) Atrial unipolar 3.2 + 0.47 V not measurable Atrial (overlapping biphasic) 1.6 + 0.37 V 3.37 + 0.84 V Diaphragmatic above 7 V 5.21 + 0.3 V wave sensing 2.35 + 1.3 mV 1.27 + 0.8 mV The patients were discharged in the VDD mode. Evaluation thirty days after showed transient loss of atrial capture during inspiration in one patient in spite of absence of other threshold changes compared to the 48 hours evaluation. In conclusion, overlapping biphasic stimulation reduces the atrial pacing thresholds while maintaining adequate atrial sensing with a safe margin regarding diaphragmatic stimulation.

Aneurismas da aorta ascendente (AAA) e dissecções agudas da aorta (DAA) são defeitos que cursam com insuficiência valvar aórtica (IAo) na maioria dos pacientes, geralmente causada por vários mecanismos. Em 30% a 50% dos casos, os folhetos aórticos são morfologicamente normais, possibilitando a reconstrução através do reimplante da valva e das artérias coronárias em um tubo corrugado de Dacron e pericárdio bovino. Descrita por Tirone David, esta técnica evita a prótese valvular e, provavelmente, nos casos de AAA, corrige definitivamente os mecanismos envolvidos. No período de novembro de 1994 a dezembro de 1995 operamos 11 pacientes, que foram assim divididos: Grupo I: DAA, 5 pacientes, todos com o Tipo 1 de DeBakey, sendo 4 agudos e 1 crônico; Grupo II: AAA, 6 pacientes, a maioria com idade acima de 50 anos. No Grupo I empregamos hipotermia profunda, parada circulatória total e perfusão cerebral retrógrada. No Grupo II usamos hipotermia moderada a 28oC. Em ambos a proteção miocárdica foi realizada através de infusão anterógrada intermitente e isotérmica de solução cardioplégica sangüínea associada a solução salina gelada no pericárdio. Dois (18,2%) pacientes faleceram na fase hospitalar e 1 (9%) tardiamente, todos do Grupo I, e 8 vêm sendo acompanhados, com tempo máximo de 13 meses de seguimento. Todos os pacientes sobreviventes (9/11) foram submetidos a estudo ecocardiográfico antes da alta e nenhum apresentou disfunção valvar aórtica. Em dezembro de 1995, todos que sobreviviam (8/11) foram reavaliados por ecocardiografia e os resultados são mostrados neste trabalho. Concluímos que o reimplante da valva aórtica descrito por David é um método efetivo de tratamento da IAo associada aos AAA e DAA. Mesmo sendo pequeno o número de pacientes e o seguimento desta série, acreditamos que a tentativa de evitar o implante de próteses valvulares é encorajadora para ambos, cirurgião e paciente, em um seleto número de casos.

Aneurysms of the root and ascending aorta (AAA) and acute aortic dissections (AAD) are usually associated with valvular aortic insufficiency (VAI) in a large number of patients, caused by a variety of machanisms. In 30% to 50% of these cases the aortic leaflets are morphologically normal and can be spared using the technique of reconstruction of the root and ascending aorta plus the reimplantation of the aortic valve and the coronary arteries in a composite Dacron and bovine pericardium tubular graft. This technique, described and proposed by Tirone David, avoids valve replacement and, in some cases of AAA, may definitely correct the mechanisms involved in the disease. From November 1994 to December 1995, 11 patients were operated upon this technique and divided in two main groups: Group I - AAD, 5 patients, all with Type I DeBakey, 4 with acute and 1 with chronic dissection; Group II - AAA, 6 patients, the majority being over 50 years old. The surgical technique, concerning the Group I, included profound hypothermia (all cases), total circulatory arrest and retrograde cerebral perfusion, (3 cases). In Group II we used moderate hypothermia at 28°C. In both groups the myocardial protection was performed with intermittent antegrade isothermic blood cardioplegia delivered each 10 minutes, associated with iced saline into the pericardium. There were two operative deaths (18.2%) and one late death (9%), all from the Group I, and 9 were discharged from hospital (81.8%) with a maximum follow-up period of 13 months. All patients (9/11) had colour ecodopplercardiographic evaluation before discharge and none of them had aortic valvular dysfunction. The Eco studies were repeated for all surviving patients (8/11) in December 1995, and the results are shown in this paper. We conclude that the aortic valve-sparing operation described by Tirone David is a very reliable and effective method of treatment of the VAI associated with AAA and AAD. Although the number of patients is small and the follow-up period is short in this series, we believe that the efforts to avoid valve replacement in these patients is encouraging for both, the surgeon and the patient, in carefully selected cases.
