Abstract We evaluated the relationship between southern brown shrimp Penaeus subtilis (Pérez Farfante, 1967) yield and environmental parameters on the Amazon continental shelf. We analysed monthly fishing effort data (number of days spent at sea) and yield (kg of tails) collected between 1978 and 2009. A causal relationship had been expected between Amazon River discharge during the main period of shrimp occurrence in estuarine waters (considering post larval settlement and juvenile recruitment in second semester of each year) and adult abundance (represented by fishery yield in the first semester of the following year). We detected significant correlations between monthly river discharge and yield with a negative lag of four months, and between river discharge during the dry season (June to November) and yield in the following year. In general, low and high discharges during a given year were associated with high and low fishery yields, respectively, during the following year.

Resumo: Nas costas tropicais e subtropicais, sobre as plataformas continentais, os recursos pesqueiros demersais são abundantes e considerados uma parcela importante do ambiente marinho. Os recursos pesqueiros demersais marinhos são capturados por diversas modalidades de pesca, muitas vezes de forma insustentável, o que vem provocando o esgotamento de seus estoques. Com o objetivo de inventariar a ictiofauna demersal marinha da costa sudeste-sul do Brasil, assim como seu status de conservação e distribuição, foram analisadas a composição e frequência de peixes capturados em 117 cruzeiros de pesca entre 2005 e 2012 pela frota de arrasto de parelha sediada no Estado de São Paulo. A ictiofauna foi composta por 245 espécies (81 famílias, 32 ordens e 02 classes), sendo 50 consideradas como constantes, 38 acessórias e 157 acidentais; 13.47% apresentam algum grau de ameaça; 35.29% dos Chondrichthyes e 11.85% dos Actinopterygii (15.1% do total) pertencem à fauna endêmica da Província Zoogeográfica da Argentina. A riqueza observada está diretamente vinculada às características oceanográficas da área de estudo, sendo estas responsáveis pelo limite meridional de ocorrência de várias espécies tropicais e o limite setentrional de espécies de regiões temperadas. Esta é a região com maior abundância de recursos pesqueiros do Brasil.

Abstract: Demersal fishery resources are abundant on continental shelves, on the tropical and subtropical coasts, making up a significant part of the marine environment. Marine demersal fishery resources are captured by various fishing methods, often unsustainably, which has led to the depletion of their stocks. In order to inventory the marine demersal ichthyofauna on the Southern Brazilian coast, as well as their conservation status and distribution, this study analyzed the composition and frequency of occurrence of fish captured by pair trawling in 117 fishery fleet landings based in the State of São Paulo between 2005 and 2012. The ichthyofauna consisted of 245 species (81 families, 32 orders and 2 classes). Among the species, 50 species were classified as constant, 38 accessory and 157 accidental. Still, 13.47% of the species were listed as endangered; 35.29% of the Chondrichthyes and 11.85% of the Actinopterygii (15.1% of the total species) belong to the endemic fauna of the Biogeographic Province of Argentina. The richness was directly related to the oceanographic features of the study area, which determined the southern boundary of occurrence of several tropical species and the northern boundary of occurrence for temperate species. This is the region with the highest abundance of fishery resources in Brazil.

RESUMO É iminente que o Brasil desenvolva ferramentas para monitorar o sistema de áreas protegidas do país, formado especialmente pelas Unidades de Conservação e tendo como foco a proteção efetiva da biodiversidade. Nesse contexto, esse trabalho discute métricas de referência (ou linhas de base) para compor um Índice de Integridade Biótica (IIB) baseado nas comunidades de peixes, tendo como área de estudo o Parque Nacional do Pantanal Matogrossense. Os hábitats encontrados no Parque foram agrupados em quatro estratos ambientais: rios, corixos (cursos d´água que se conectam à planície de inundação) e baías permanentes e temporárias. As coletas de peixes foram realizadas em 12 pontos amostrais durante o período seco (out/nov de 2010 e 2011). Foram identificadas 146 espécies de peixes, totalizando 18.954 exemplares coletados em amostragens padronizadas. Não houve associação entre a estrutura da comunidade e os estratos ambientais, sugerindo homogeneidade de hábitats. O IIB final foi composto por nove métricas, a maior parte alocada na classe excelente de integridade biótica, poucas na classe regular e nenhuma na classe pobre. Não houve diferença significativa no IIB entre os dois anos consecutivos. Esses resultados oferecem subsídios técnicos para a tomada de decisão sobre a gestão das áreas alagáveis no Pantanal brasileiro.

ABSTRACT Considering the need for the Brazilian government to develop tools for environmental monitoring for biodiversity conservancy purposes in the national protected areas system, this paper focuses on determining reference site metrics (or baselines) for adapting the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) based on the fish assemblages in the Pantanal National Park (PNP). The habitats in the PNP were grouped into four categories: main rivers, corixos (channels connecting the floodplain), permanent bays, and temporary bays. Fish samplings were performed at 12 points during the dry season (Oct-Nov 2010 and 2011). 146 fish species were identified from the total 18,954 individuals collected with standardized fishing gear. There was no association between the structure of the fish assemblage and categories, suggesting a theory on homogeneity of habitats. The final IBIPNP consists of nine metrics, most of them were framed in excellent class, some in fair, and none in poor. There was no significant difference in IBIPNP scores between the two sampled years. This approach provides a direct application for wetland management purposes.

The main life history traits of the large Amazonian migratory catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii were determined in the Caqueta River, Colombia. The breeding season occurred during the rising and falling water periods. The size at first sexual maturity was significantly larger for females (88.5 cm Ls) than males (81.7 cm). Both males and females reproduce for the first time between their third and fourth year. The growth characteristics were estimated using length frequency analyses. Females grew systematically larger than males, the difference being about 9% after the first year and increasing to 12% for ten years old individuals. Mortality estimates, calculated from different models, some taking into account the effect of body size, ranged from 0.32 to 0.42 year-1 for natural mortality and from 0.72 to 0.82 year-1 for fishing mortality, indicating high fishing pressure in the Caqueta River, higher than in the Peruvian Amazon. Resulting exploitation rates (0.63 to 0.72) pointed towards overexploitation of the species in the Caqueta. The situation calls for a concerted management between the countries sharing this resource (Brazil, Colombia, and Peru) and potential solutions are proposed.

Se determinaron las principales características del ciclo biológico de dorado Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii en el río Caquetá, Colombia. La época reproductiva ocurre durante la transición del período de aguas altas a aguas en descenso. La talla de primera madurez sexual fue significativamente mayor en hembras (88,5 cm Ls) que en machos (81,7 cm). Tanto hembras como machos se reproducen por primera vez entre su tercer y cuarto año de vida. Los parámetros de crecimiento fueron estimados mediante el análisis de frecuencia de tallas. Las hembras alcanzan un mayor tamaño que los machos, con una diferencia de cerca del 9% en el primer año que luego aumenta hasta un 12% en el décimo año de edad. La estimación de mortalidad, calculada a partir de diferentes modelos, variaron entre 0,32 a 0,42 años-1 para la mortalidad natural y 0,72 a 0,82 años-1 para la mortalidad por pesca, lo que indica una alta presión de la pesca en el río Caquetá, mucho más elevada que en la Amazonía peruana. Las tasas de explotación resultantes (0,63 a 0,72) para el río Caquetá, señalan una sobre-utilización del recurso. La situación exige una gestión concertada entre los países que comparten y utilizan con elevada frecuencia este recurso amazónico (Brasil, Colombia y Perú), por lo que se proponen posibles estrategias de solución.

Com o objetivo de identificar os padrões de organização das comunidades de peixes dos rios Jogui e Iguatemi nós amostramos peixes através de redes de espera trimestralmente entre Novembro/1999 e Agosto/2000. Hypostomus ancistroides e Parauchenipterus galeatus foram as espécies de peixes mais abundantes nos rios Jogui e Iguatemi, respectivamente. A variação longitudinal foi mais importante que a sazonal na determinação da composição de espécies em ambos os rios e a diferença entre estações não foi significativa. A altitude foi o fator mais importante na determinação da distribuição das espécies.

In order to assess the organization patterns of the fish communities in the Jogui and Iguatemi rivers, we collected fish with gill nets tri-monthly from November 1999 to August 2000. Hypostomus ancistroides and Parauchenipterus galeatus were the most abundant species in the Jogui and Iguatemi rivers, respectively. Longitudinal variation was more important than seasonal in determining the species composition in both rivers, and the difference between seasons was not statistically significant. Altitude was the most important factor determining species distribution.

Com o objetivo de verificar a importância da variação longitudinal, sazonal e a influência das características físicas e químicas da água sobre a diversidade de espécies de peixes realizamos amostragens trimestrais, entre Novembro/1999 e Agosto/2000, em três pontos amostrais no rio Jogui e oito pontos amostrais no rio Iguatemi-MS. A variação longitudinal foi mais importante que a variação sazonal na determinação da riqueza e número de indivíduos no rio Jogui, no entanto, a equitabilidade não apresentou diferença significativa sazonal ou longitudinal. No rio Jogui 78,3% da variação na riqueza de espécies, 81,6% no número de indivíduos e 41,1% na equitabilidade foram explicadas pelas características físicas e químicas da água. No rio Iguatemi nós não detectamos diferenças estatisticamente significativas longitudinais ou sazonais nos descritores analisados das comunidades nem influência significativa dos fatores ambientais.

In order to verify the importance of longitudinal and seasonal variations and the effect of physical and chemical water characteristics to fish species diversity we accomplished three-month samplings, between November/1999 and August/2000, in three selected points in the Jogui River and eight points in the Iguatemi River-MS. The longitudinal variation was more important than seasonal variation in determining richness and number of individuals in the Jogui River, however, evenness did not present statistically significant differences either longitudinal or seasonal. In the Jogui River 78.3% of species richness, 81.6% of number of individuals and 41.1% of evenness variation was explained by the water chemical and physical characteristics. In the Iguatemi River we did not detect longitudinal or seasonal statistically significant differences in the analyzed community descriptors nor significant influence of environmental factors.

O presente trabalho visa atualizar uma série de informação sobre a produção pesqueira regional, apresentando e caracterizando a contribuição dos diferentes sub-sistemas da Amazônia Central para a captura desembarcada no principal mercado pesqueiro de Manaus entre 1994 e 1996. Coletores foram contratados para registrar informações chave sobre as pescarias efetuadas. Foram registrados 39 tipos ou grupos de peixe na produção pesqueira desembarcada. Jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.), curimatã (Prochilodus nigricans), pacu (Myleinae), matrinchã (Brycon cephalus), sardinha (Triportheus spp.), aracu (Anostomidae) e tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) foram os itens mais importantes durante os três anos sucessivos. Em 1994 estes itens totalizaram 91,6% da produção total; em 1995 e 1996 estes valores representaram, respectivamente, 85,3% e 86,4% da produção total. A quantidade de tambaqui desembarcada diminuiu notavelmente ao longo do 1976-1996. Há um componente sazonal na produção das principais espécies: jaraqui e matrinchã foram desembarcados principalmente entre abril e junho, enquanto que curimatã, pacu, e sardinha foram desembarcados principalmente durante a estação seca. Outros itens importantes mostraram uma forte variação interanual na produção. A produção pesqueira desembarcada foi originada principalmente do sub-sistema do Rio Purus (ao redor 30% da produção total). O sub-sistema do Médio-Solimões contribuiu com uma média de 15% e os sub-sistemas do Madeira, Baixo-Solimões, Alto-Amazonas e Juruá, juntos contribuíram com 11,5% da produção total desembarcada. Os demais sub-sistemas contribuíram apenas com 7,6% da produção total.

The present work aims to update a series of information about the regional fishing production, by presenting and characterizing the contribution of the different sub-systems of the Amazon basin to the catch landed at the main fishing market of Manaus, Brazil, from 1994 to 1996. Collectors specifically hired for this function registered key information on the fisheries. Thirty nine types or groups of fish were found in the fishing production landed. Jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.), curimatã (Prochilodus nigricans), pacu (Myleinae), matrinchã (Brycon cephalus), sardine (Triportheus spp.), aracu (Anostomidae) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) were the most important items during three consecutive years. In 1994 these items summed up 91.6% of the total production; in 1995 and 1996 these values were, respectively, 85.3% and 86.4% of the total production. Tambaqui landed decreased remarkably during the period 1976-1996. There was a strong seasonal component in the production of the main species; jaraqui and matrinchã were mostly landed between April and June, while curimatã, pacu, and sardine were mostly landed during the dry season. Other important items showed a strong inter-annual variation in their production. The fishing production landed came mostly from the sub-system of the Purus River (around 30% of the total production). The subsystem of the Medium-Solimões contributed with an average of 15% and the sub-systems of the Madeira, Lower-Solimões, Upper-Amazon and Juruá, together contributed with 11.5% of the total production landed. Finally, the remaining sub-systems contributed with only 7.6% of the production.
