Abstract Alternatives to conventional Portland cement with a more sustainable appeal are increasingly recurrent. Among these are the Limestone Calcined Clay (LC3) systems, characterized by high replacement percentages of Portland clinker by calcined clay and limestone, materials widely available worldwide. A complete understanding of the rheological behavior of LC3 systems is necessary for the practical application of this type of cement to be consolidated. Furthermore, although not yet investigated, the incorporation of nanomaterials stands out as a promising alternative for accelerating reactions and enhancing the mechanical performance of these systems at early ages. This study investigated the incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) contents from 0.05 to 0.125% in an LC3 system through rotational rheometry, isothermal calorimetry, compressive strength at 7 and 28 days, and X-ray diffraction. Although the CNT incorporation increased the dynamic yield stress and equivalent viscosity of the LC3 pastes, the content of 0.1 wt.% slightly increased and anticipated the occurrence of the main peak of the aluminates. Increases of up to 13.5% in compressive strength at 7 and 28 days of hydration were observed for a CNT content of 0.1 wt.%.

Resumo Alternativas ao cimento Portland convencional com apelo mais sustentável são cada vez mais recorrentes. Entre elas estão os sistemas Limestone Calcined Clay (LC3), caracterizados por altos percentuais de substituição do clínquer Portland por argila calcinada e calcário, materiais amplamente disponíveis em todo o mundo. Um completo entendimento do comportamento reológico dos sistemas LC3 é necessário para que a aplicação prática deste tipo de cimento seja consolidada. Além disso, embora ainda não investigada, a incorporação de nanomateriais se destaca como uma alternativa promissora para acelerar reações e melhorar o desempenho mecânico desses sistemas em idades precoces. Este estudo investigou a incorporação de teores de nanotubos de carbono (CNT) de 0,05 a 0,125% em um sistema LC3 por meio de reometria rotacional, calorimetria isotérmica, resistência à compressão aos 7 e 28 dias e difração de raios-X. Embora a incorporação de CNT tenha aumentado a tensão de escoamento e a viscosidade equivalente das pastas LC3, o teor de 0,1% aumentou ligeiramente e antecipou a ocorrência do pico principal dos aluminatos. Aumentos de até 13,5% na resistência à compressão aos 7 e 28 dias de hidratação foram observados para um teor de CNT de 0,1% em massa.

Abstract The use of carbon nanotubes in cementitious materials improves the mechanical properties of these composites and increases their compressive and flexural strength. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility of reducing the Portland cement content by using functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in mortar samples, using mechanical properties as parameters (compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity). Experimental results allowed us to conclude that the addition of MWCNT in 0.1% by weight of Portland cement, to the mortar samples allowed a reduction of the Portland cement content by up to 10%, while the water/cement ratio remained unchanged without affecting the mechanical behavior.

Resumo A utilização de nanotubos de carbono em materiais cimentícios melhora as propriedades mecânicas destes compósitos, aumentando a sua resistência à compressão e à flexão. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a viabilidade técnica da redução do teor de cimento Portland através da utilização de nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas funcionalizados (MWCNT) em amostras de argamassa, utilizando como parâmetros as propriedades mecânicas (resistência à compressão, resistência à flexão e módulo de elasticidade). Os resultados experimentais permitiram concluir que a adição de MWCNT em 0,1% em peso de cimento Portland, às amostras de argamassa, permitiu uma redução do teor de cimento Portland em até 10%, mantendo-se inalterada a relação água/cimento, sem afetar o comportamento mecânico.

Abstract Introduction The question as to whether occupational noise exposure causes symmetrical or asymmetrical hearing loss is still controversial and incompletely understood. Objective Two electrophysiological methods (cortical evoked response audiometry: CERA and auditory steady state responses: ASSR) were used to address this issue. Method 156 subjects with a well-documented history of noise exposure, a wide range of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) and without middle ear pathology underwent both a CERA and an ASSR examination in the context of an exhaustive medicolegal expert assessment intended for possible compensation. Results Whatever the method (CERA or ASSR), the average electrophysiological hearing thresholds (1-2-3 kHz) are significantly worse in the left ear. The right - left differences in CERA and ASSR thresholds are strongly correlated with each other. No significant effect of frequency is found. No correlation is observed between right - left differences in hearing thresholds and either age or degree of hearing loss. Conclusion In NIHL, there is an actual average right - left difference of about 2.23 dB, i.e., 3.2%, the left ear being more impaired.

Resumo A sonicação é amplamente utilizada para dispersão de nanomateriais em matrizes cimentícias. Aditivos superplastificantes à base de policarboxilato (SP) são geralmente incorporados na suspensão aquosa de nanomateriais antes da sonicação para melhorar a dispersão desses materiais. No entanto, o efeito da sonicação na estrutura molecular e no desempenho de dispersão do SP não foi totalmente investigado. Este trabalho avaliou o efeito da sonicação de um SP comercial a 20 kHz, potência de 750 W, amplitude de 50 e 80%, durante 15 e 30 min. Inicialmente, o efeito de sonicação foi avaliado em suspensão aquosa, determinando a distribuição de tamanho do SP (através de espalhamento dinâmico de luz – DLS) e potencial zeta. Posteriormente, as suspensões aquosas de SP foram utilizadas para a produção de pastas de cimento Portland. Foram realizados ensaios reológicos durante os primeiros 120 minutos de hidratação e a resistência à compressão foi avaliada aos 14 e 28 dias. Os resultados do potencial zeta e DLS sugeriram que a sonicação reduz o tamanho das cadeias de SP. Como resultado, a sonicação do SP aumentou a tensão de escoamento dinâmica inicial, a viscosidade e a área de histerese das pastas de cimento. Em contraste, a sonicação SP melhorou seu desempenho de dispersão ao longo do tempo, resultando em pastas com viscosidade reduzida a partir de 80 minutos. Finalmente, a sonicação SP não afetou a resistência à compressão das pastas de cimento aos 14 e 28 dias de hidratação. Em geral, quando o SP é disperso via sonicação juntamente com nanopartículas para aplicação em matrizes cimentícias, o efeito de sonicação do aditivo químico deve ser levado em consideração quando as propriedades de estado fresco do compósito são avaliadas.

Abstract Sonication is widely used for nanomaterials dispersion in cementitious matrices. Polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer (SP) admixtures are usually incorporated in the aqueous nanomaterials suspension before sonication to improve the dispersion of these materials. Nevertheless, the effect of sonicating SP on its molecular structure or dispersing performance has not been fully investigated. This work assessed the effect of sonicating a commercial SP at 20 kHz, 750 W power, 50 or 80% amplitude, during 15 and 30 min. Initially, the sonication effect was evaluated in aqueous suspension by determining the SP size distribution (through dynamic light scattering – DLS) and zeta potential. Subsequently, the aqueous SP suspensions were used for Portland cement paste production. Rheological tests up to 120 minutes and compressive strength at 14 and 28 days were conducted. DLS and zeta potential results suggested that sonication reduce the size of SP chains. As a result, SP sonication increased the initial dynamic yield stress, viscosity, and hysteresis area of cement pastes. In contrast, SP sonication improved its time-dependent dispersing performance, resulting in pastes with reduced viscosity from 80 minutes onwards. Finally, SP sonication did not affect the compressive strength of cement pastes at 14 and 28 days of hydration. Overall, when SP is sonicated together with nanoparticles for application in cementitious matrices, the effect of sonicating the chemical admixture must be considered when the fresh-state properties of the composite are evaluated.

abstract: The effects of chemical and physical methods on multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersion in Portland cement pastes were investigated. Consistency, rheology, compressive strength, dynamic elastic modulus, flexural strength, water absorption, and void content tests were performed to evaluate these effects. Changes in the rheology of the cement pastes and surfactants resulted in a significant reduction in apparent viscosity and yield strength. Additionally, cement pastes containing carboxyl- functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNT-COOH) and surfactant showed higher compressive strengths at 28 d. However, the ultrasonic dispersion method did not significantly influence the properties of hardened Portland cement compared with Portland cement produced using the non-sonicated aqueous solution.

resumo: Foram investigados os efeitos dos métodos químicos e físicos na dispersão de nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (MWCNT) em pastas de cimento Portland. Para avaliar estes efeitos, foram realizados testes de consistência, reologia, resistência à compressão, módulo elástico dinâmico, resistência à flexão, absorção de água, e teor de vazio. As alterações na reologia das pastas de cimento e surfactantes resultaram numa redução significativa da viscosidade aparente e da resistência ao escoamento. Além disso, pastas de cimento contendo MWCNT funcionalizados com grupo carboxílicos (MWCNT-COOH) e surfactante mostraram maiores resistências à compressão a 28 d. No entanto, o método de dispersão ultrassônica não influenciou significativamente as propriedades do cimento Portland endurecido em comparação com o cimento Portland produzido utilizando a solução aquosa não sonicada.

Abstract Background Up to 60% of pediatric surgical patients develop high levels of preoperative anxiety. This study compared the effects of oral combinations of midazolam and ketamine with oral midazolam alone for pediatric preanesthetic medication. Methods The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO as CRD42020172920. A systematic literature search was conducted using Medline, Cochrane, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials comparing oral combinations of midazolam and ketamine with midazolam alone as preanesthetic medication in elective surgical pediatric patients. Meta-analyses included the following outcomes: anxiety and sedation levels, child’s behavior during separation from parents, face mask acceptance, and venipuncture. The quality of evidence was assessed using GRADE criteria. Results Twenty studies were included. The following effects (RR (95% CI)) were observed for combinations of ketamine and midazolam relative midazolam alone: anxiolysis (1.2 (0.94-1.52); p= 0.15; I2 = 80%; GRADE = very low); satisfactory sedation (1.2 ( 1.10-1.31); p< 0.001; I2 = 71%; GRADE = very low); behavior during parental separation (1.2 (1.06-1.36); p= 0.003; I2 = 88%; GRADE = very low); facial mask acceptance (1.13 (1.04-1.24); p= 0.007; I2 = 49%; GRADE = very low); behavior during venipuncture (1.32 (1.11-1.57); p= 0.002; I2 = 66%; GRADE = very low). Conclusions While similar probabilities of obtaining anxiolysis were found, adequate sedation, calm behavior during child’s separation from parents, low levels of fear during face mask adaptation, and cooperative behavior during peripheral venous cannulation were more likely with midazolam-ketamine combinations.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a incorporação da nanossílica (NS) em argamassas de reboco produzidas com agregado fino reciclado (RFA). Inicialmente, foi realizado um estudo em pastas cimentícias substituindo o cimento Portland por NS nos teores de 0%, 0,4%, 0,6%, 0,8% e 1,0%. As amostras foram submetidas a análises de espalhamento, reologia, calorimetria, difração de raios X (DRX), espectroscopia de infravermelho por transformada de Fourier (FTIR) e resistência à compressão aos 28 dias. Os resultados demonstraram que as pastas com 0,4% NS e 0,6% NS apresentaram aumento de resistência de 55% e 58%, respectivamente, devido à maior formação de silicato de cálcio hidratado (C-S-H), quando comparada à pasta de referência. Diante disso, foram produzidas as amostras de RFA, substituindo o cimento Portland por 0% NS, 0,4% NS e 0,6% NS. Aos 28 dias, o desempenho mecânico, a microestrutura e a durabilidade foram avaliados por meio da resistência à flexão e compressão, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), módulo de elasticidade dinâmico e absorção de água por capilaridade. A partir dos resultados, concluiu-se que as amostras de RFA com 0,4% NS resultaram no teor ótimo de nanossílica, produzindo um aumento na resistência à compressão e redução na sorptividade de água, em relação às demais misturas. As imagens de MEV sugerem que NS reagiu com a portlandita formada a partir da hidratação do cimento, resultando em um enchimento eficiente dos poros do RFA, melhorando o desenvolvimento microestrutural das amostras.

ABSTRACT This paper evaluated the incorporation of nanosilica (NS) in rendering mortars produced with recycled fine aggregate (RFA). Initially, a study was carried out on cementitious pastes, replacing Portland cement with NS at levels of 0%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0%. The samples were submitted to scattering, rheology, calorimetry, x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and compressive strength analysis at 28 days. The results demonstrated that the pastes with 0.4% NS and 0.6% NS presented an increase in strength of 55% and 58%, respectively, due to a greater formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), when compared with the reference paste. From that, the RFA samples were produced, replacing Portland cement with 0% NS, 0.4% NS, and 0.6% NS. At 28 days, mechanical performance, microstructure, and durability were evaluated by means of flexural strength and compression, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic elasticity module, and water absorption by capillarity. From the results, it was concluded that the RFA samples with 0.4% NS resulted in the optimal nanosilica content, increasing compressive strength values and reducing the sorptivity, in relation to the other mixtures. The SEM images suggest that NS reacted with portlandite formed of the cement hydration, improving the microstructural development of the samples.

RESUMO A incorporação de nanomateriais em compósitos cimentícios vem se tornando cada vez mais frequente e tem, como um dos principais objetivos, promover melhorias às propriedades mecânicas e microestruturais. Dentre os diversos nanomateriais existente, os nanotubos de carbono (NTC) se destacam devido à sua elevada resistência, principalmente à tração, e à alta capacidade de deformação elástica. Entretanto, um dos impasses em sua utilização é a dificuldade de realizar uma dispersão eficaz e estável, mas pesquisas apontam que a utilização de aditivos contribui para a desaglomeração do nanomaterial. Sendo assim, este trabalho avaliou a influência de dois tipos de superplastificantes (SPA e SPB), adicionados na proporção de 1:0 a 1:3 (NTCPM:SP), em uma solução sonicada por 5 minutos. Os resultados mostraram que o aditivo SPB foi o que melhor proporcionou uma melhor dispersão com um menor consumo. Pastas de cimento Portland também foram produzidas e comprovou-se que o NTCPM reduziu a consistência das pastas e que a inserção de aditivo ajudou a diminuir esse efeito. Por fim, infere-se que o aditivo, além de melhorar a dispersão do NTCPM, também interage com o cimento Portland, promovendo pastas com maior espalhamento.

ABSTRACT The incorporation of nanomaterials in cementitious composites has become more and more frequent and has, as one of the main objectives, to promote improvements to the mechanical and microstructural properties. Among the various existing nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNT) stand out due to their high resistance, mainly to traction, and the high capacity of elastic deformation. However, one of the impasses in its use is the difficulty of achieving an effective and stable dispersion, but research shows that the use of additives contributes to the de-agglomeration of the nanomaterial. Thus, this work evaluated the influence of two types of superplasticizers (SPA and SPB), added in the proportion of 1: 0 to 1: 3 (MWCNT: SP), in a sonicated solution for 5 minutes. The results showed that the SPB additive was the one that best provided a better dispersion with less consumption. Portland cement pastes were also produced and it was found that the MWCNT reduced the consistency of the pastes and that the insertion of additives helped to reduce this effect. Finally, it appears that the additive, in addition to improving the dispersion of the MWCNT, also interacts with Portland cement, promoting pastes with greater spread.

Abstract The Direct Reduction (DR) process has been growing worldwide, and there are strong context suggestions that it will grow even more. One of these factors is the environmental pressure that occurs worldwide, and there are already projects to migrate Blast Furnace route steel plants to the Direct Reduction (DR) route, due to its smaller carbon footprint. Considering the importance of this process and the challenges of carrying out experimental tests on a pilot scale, an adequate way to evaluate the process and its impacts is through numerical simulations. There are different techniques applied to models that describe the counter-current reactor in the DR process, but none of them account for the clustering phenomenon. Clustering occurs because of the sintering of the metallic iron on the surface of the pellets in such a way that they attach to each other, forming clusters that hinder the gas flow through the shaft. The present study attempted to adapt a numerical model of a DR process to account for the effect of the cluster formation. Some clustering index equations from literature and some developed as part of this study were used and tested in the model, as a function of temperature, by varying the solid volume fraction in the control unit. The equation that resulted in the adjusted output closest to the current empirical value was implemented in the model and proved to be successful.

ABSTRACT This work evaluated the efficiency and workability manteinance of a polyfunctional (lignosulfonate-based) and a superplasticizer (polycarboxylate-based) admixture in high-performance pastes (water/cement ratios of 0.30, 0.33 and 0.36) produced with two types of Portland cement (one pozzolanic and one high early strength). The workability of the pastes was evaluated by the mini slump test immediately after mixing, and after 20 and 40 minutes. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of pastes with fixed w/c ratio (0.36) and mini slump (130 mm), produced with the different combinations of cements and admixtures, was evaluated. The results showed that the CP IV+lignosulfonate and CP V-ARI+polycarboxylate mixes presented the best workability maintenance over time. The pastes produced with CP V-ARI presented 28-day strengths about 22% higher than those produced with CP IV, for both admixtures. In turn, the lignosulfonate-containing pastes showed strengths about 10% higher than those produced with the polycarboxylate-based admixture. Overall, it was possible to obtain the same workability for high-performance Portland cement pastes produced with both admixtures and cements; however, the workability mantainance and mechanical strength highly depends on the combination of cement and admixture used.

Resumo Nanotubos de carbono (NTCs) são potenciais candidatos a melhorar o balanço térmico do concreto, reduzindo as tensões internas causadas pelo aquecimento diferencial em elementos maciços de concreto. Quanto maior a relação de aspecto (RA) e o teor de NTCs, maior será a condutividade térmica (CT) esperada. Porém, uma RA elevada pode prejudicar a dispersão adequada do NTCs na matriz cimentícia, potencialmente prejudicando a trabalhabilidade e resistência mecânica do compósito. Este estudo avaliou o efeito do RA (35, 250, 900 e 3500) e teor (0,05% e 0,10%) de NTCs na CT, reologia (squeeze flow) e resistência mecânica das pastas de cimento. Os resultados mostraram que a incorporação de 0,05% NTC aumentou a CT da pasta em até 15% para uma RA de 250, mas o aumento da RA reduziu progressivamente a CT do compósito. Por sua vez, a incorporação de 0,10% NTC não resultou em ganhos significativos de CT. A tensão de escoamento e a viscosidade das misturas aumentaram progressivamente com o aumento do teor de NTC e da RA, em até 119% em comparação com a pasta de cimento sem NTCs. Nenhuma diferença significativa foi observada na resistência à compressão de 28 dias com incorporação de 0,05% NTCs, enquanto 0,10% NTCs levou a pequenas reduções de resistência para algumas misturas. Em relação à resistência à flexão, a incorporação de 0,05% de qualquer um dos NTCs diminuiu a resistência das misturas, enquanto a incorporação de 0,10% geralmente compensou essa redução, exceto pela RA mais baixa. No geral, os NTCs com RA intermediária (~250) foram eficazes em melhorar a condutividade térmica da pasta de cimento, aumentando-a em 15% com teor relativamente baixo (0,05%), enquanto não prejudicou significativamente o desempenho fresco e mecânico do compósito.

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are potential candidates to enhance the heat balance of concrete, reducing internal stresses caused by differential heating in massive concrete elements. The higher the aspect ratio (AR) and content of CNTs, the greater the expected thermal conductivity (TC). However, high AR may impair the proper dispersion of CNTs in cementitious matrix, potentially harming the workability and mechanical strength of the composite. This work evaluated the effect of the AR (35, 250, 900, and 3500) and content (0.05% and 0.10%) of CNTs on the TC, rheology (squeeze flow), and mechanical strength of cement paste. Results showed that 0.05% CNT increased the TC of paste by up to 15% for AR of 250, but further increasing AR progressively reduced the TC of the composite. In turn, 0.10% CNT incorporation did not result in significant TC gains. The yield stress and viscosity of the mixes progressively increased as CNTs content and AR increased, by up to 119% compared with plain cement paste. No significant differences were observed in 28-day compressive strength with 0.05% CNT incorporation, while 0.10% CNT led to slight strength reductions for some mixes. Regarding flexural strength, 0.05% incorporation of either CNT decreased the strength of the mixes while 0.10% incorporation generally compensated this reduction, except for the lowest aspect ratio. Overall, CNTs with intermediate AR (around 250) was effective in improving the thermal conductivity of cement paste, increasing it by 15% with relatively low content (0.05%) while did not significantly impair the fresh and mechanical performance of the composite.

resumo: Concretos de ultra-alto desempenho com microfibras metálicas têm sido bastante estudados com objetivo de produzir estruturas mais eficientes e duráveis. O desempenho deste material é dependente das características da interface entre as microfibras e a matriz cimentícia. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar as propriedades micro-nanomecânicas da zona de transição interfacial entre as microfibras metálicas e a matriz cimentícia de materiais cimentícios de ultra-alto desempenho através das variáveis relação água/cimento e distância da fibra. Os resultados obtidos mostram a formação silicatos de cálcio hidratados de alta densidade (HD C-S-H) em maior quantidade do que silicatos de cálcio hidratados de baixa densidade (LD C-S-H) para relações água/cimento de 0,2 e 0,3. As propriedades medidas na interface entre as microfibras metálicas e a matriz cimentícia foram muito semelhantes àquelas medidas na pasta de cimento. Também não foram observadas diferenças significativas no módulo de elasticidade, dureza e composição química conforme a distância da fibra foi variada. Sendo assim, os autores concluem que não há ocorrência de uma região mais fraca na zona de transição entre a pasta e as microfibras.

abstract: Ultra-high performance concretes with steel microfibers have been studied in depth with the aim of producing more efficient and durable structures. The performance of these materials depends on the characteristics of the interface between microfibers and cementitious matrix. This research investigates the micro-nanomechanical properties of the interfacial transition zone between the steel microfibers and the matrix of ultra-high performance cementitious composite. The effect of the water/cement ratio and distance from the microfiber were analyzed. The results confirm the formation of high-density calcium-silicate-hydrate (HD C-S-H) matrix at higher concentrations than low-density calcium-silicate-hydrate (LD C-S-H) for w/c ratios of 0.2 and 0.3. The properties in cementitious matrix interface with steel microfibers were very similar to that measured for the cement paste, and no significant difference was observed regarding the distance to the microfibers in relation to the elastic modulus, hardness and chemical composition. Thus, the authors can conclude that the formation of a less resistant region does not occur at the interfacial transition zone cement paste/microfibers.

Resumo O lodo de estação de tratamento de água (ETA), principal resíduo gerado pelas atividades de potabilização da água, quando calcinado possui compostos químicos semelhantes aos encontrados nas matérias-primas cimentantes, viabilizando sua utilização como material cimentício suplementar (MCS). Este trabalho teve como objetivos: a) caracterização química e física do lodo calcinado a temperatura de 700 °C (LETAC) durante 1 hora, proveniente de uma ETA localizada em Venâncio Aires (RS); b) avaliação da influência da sua incorporação, em percentuais de 10% e 25% como MCS em pastas e em argamassas. Foram realizados ensaios microestruturais e mecânicos. Os resultados obtidos na calorimetria indicam que o resíduo apresenta efeito fíler e químico. A partir da análise termogravimétrica, verificou-se que a incorporação do lodo nas pastas de cimento promoveu um consumo de hidróxido de cálcio (redução de 40% na composição com 25% de LETAC) e consequente formação de C-S-H. Os resultados do DRX mostram que a quantidade de fases amorfas foi superior em 11% na pasta com 25% de LETAC, confirmando o desenvolvimento adicional de C-S-H. Quanto às propriedades mecânicas, não foram verificadas perdas significativas de resistência à compressão em pastas quando utilizado o resíduo em até 25% de substituição.

Abstract When sludge from water treatment plants (WTP), is calcined, it has chemical compounds similar to those found in cementing raw materials, enabling its use as supplementary cementitious material (SCM). The aims of this study are as follows: 1) chemical and physical characterisation of calcined sludge originated from a WTP located in Venâncio Aires (RS) at a temperature of 700 ° C (LETAC) for 1 hour,, 2) evaluation of the influence of its incorporation, in percentages of 10% and 25% , as SCM in pastes and mortars. Microstructural and mechanical tests were performed. The calorimetry results indicate that the waste has a filler and chemical effect. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that the incorporation of sludge in cement pastes promoted the consumption of calcium hydroxide (40% reduction in the composition with 25% of LETAC) and consequent formation of C-S-H. The results of the DRX show that the amount of amorphous phases was 11% higher in the paste with 25% of LETAC, confirming the additional development of C-S-H. Concerning the mechanical properties, no significant loss of compressive strength was observed in pastes when waste substitution of up to 25% was used.

RESUMO: A principal fase do cimento Portland endurecido é o silicato de cálcio hidratado (C-S-H), que influencia as propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos materiais de construção. Nesta pesquisa, silicato de cálcio hidratado (C-S-H) foi sintetizado, com adição de poli(ácido metacrílico) com sódio (PMA), para o desenvolvimento de nanocompósitos C-S-H/polímero. Entre os polímeros disponíveis, o PMA é indicado na literatura como um daqueles viáveis para a produção de nanocompósitos C-S-H/polímero. No entanto, não existe consenso sobre o tipo de interação que pode ocorrer. Os compostos foram caracterizados por DRX, FT-IR, TGA, teor de carbono (CHN), MET, MEV e módulo de elasticidade e a dureza foi medida por nanoindentação instrumentada. Foi verificada uma mudança significativa nas propriedades nanomecânicas do C-S-H com PMA, resultando na redução do módulo de elasticidade e dureza. O conjunto de resultados apresentados não confirma a intercalação do PMA na nanoestrutura do C-S-H, mas mostrou evidências do potencial de intercalação, uma vez que mudanças significativas foram verificadas na microestrutura.

ABSTRACT: The principal phase of hardened Portland cement pastes is calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which influences the physical and mechanical properties of construction materials. In this work, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) was synthesized, with the addition of poly-methacrylic acid with sodium (PMA), for the development of C-S-H/ polymer nanocomposites. Among the polymers available, PMA is indicated in the literature as one of those viable for producing C-S-H/polymer complexes. However, no consensus exists regarding the type of interaction this produces. The resulting compounds were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, carbon content (CHN), TEM, SEM and elastic modulus and hardness were measured by instrumented indentation. A significant change was verified in the nanomechanical properties of C-S-H with PMA, resulting in reduction in the elastic modulus and hardness. The set of results presented do not confirm the intercalation of PMA in the interlayer space of C-S-H, but presented evidence of the potential for intercalation, since changes in the microstructure clearly occurred.

RESUMO O desempenho de aditivos plastificantes está diretamente relacionado com as características da molécula empregada na sua fabricação e, nesse caso, varia de acordo com a sua procedência. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste estudo é avaliar o desempenho de quatro aditivos comerciais à base de policarboxilato em pastas de cimento Portland com baixas relações água/cimento. Os aditivos foram caracterizados por meio de ensaios de teor de sólidos e Espectroscopia de Infravermelho com Transformada de Fourier. Já o desempenho dos aditivos nas pastas foi avaliado pelos ensaios de mini-abatimento, teor de ar incorporado, resistência à compressão aos 28 dias e termogravimetria. Para ambas as relações a/c avaliadas, os quatro aditivos apresentaram espalhamentos diferentes para um mesmo teor de sólidos utilizado. Também se constatou que diferentes tipos de aditivos ocasionaram alterações distintas nos períodos de indução, bem como, diferentes incorporações de ar, que acarretaram diferentes resistências à compressão das pastas, de maneira que a maior resistência à compressão pode ser atribuída ao menor teor de ar incorporado. Estes resultados podem ser explicados porque o desempenho do aditivo está associado ao tamanho da sua molécula, cadeias laterais, peso molecular e a adsorção da molécula nos compostos químicos do cimento. Verificando que mesmas bases químicas de aditivos (policarboxilatos) resultam em diferentes comportamentos de misturas cimentícias, ressalta-se que é de suma importância o teste prévio de compatibilidade entre o cimento Portland e o aditivo químico que será utilizado na produção da matriz cimentícia.

ABSTRACT The performance of dispersing admixtures is directly related to the characteristics of the utilized molecule and it can vary according from the original. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of four commercial polycarboxylate-based in Portland cement pastes with low w/c ratio. The admixtures were characterized through tests of solids content and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The performance of the admixtures in the pastes was evaluated by the mini-slump test, as well as by the air void content, compressive strength at 28 days and thermogravimetry. For both a / c ratios evaluated, the four additives showed different spreadings for the same solids content used. It was also found that different types of additives caused different changes in the induction periods, as well as different air incorporations, which resulted in different compressive strengths of the pastes, so that the greatest compressive strength can be attributed to the lowest content of incorporated air. These results can be explained because the performance of the additive is associated with the size of its molecule, side chains, molecular weight and the adsorption of the molecule in the chemical compounds of cement. Noting that the same chemical bases of additives (polycarboxylates) result in different behaviors of cement mixtures, it is emphasized that the prior compatibility test between Portland cement and the chemical additive that will be used in the production of the cement matrix is of paramount importance.
