E. Cruz-Crespo, M.T. Sumaya-Martínez, Á. Can-Chulim, J. Pineda-Pineda, R. Bugarín-Montoya and G. Aguilar-Benítez. 2015. Quality, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activity of serrano chili peppers cultivated in volcanic rock-vermicompost and nutrient solutions. Cien. Inv. Agr. 42(3): 375-384. The concentration of antioxidant compounds, the antioxidant activity, physical quality characteristics, and the yield of serrano chilies (Capsicum annuum L.) are affected by agricultural practices, such as the use of vermicompost in containers combined with chemical fertilizers, the investigations of which have focused on yield. A study was performed to determine whether vermicompost mixed with volcanic rock and the ionic composition of the nutrient solution affect the variables mentioned above. Serrano chilies were planted in volcanic rock:vermicompost in the following proportions 100:0, 80:20 and 60:40 and were watered with Steiner nutrient solution at 25, 50, and 75%. Interaction of the factors was determined for the fresh weight of the fruits. Fruit length, diameter, number, weight, yield, firmness, hue, and chroma increased with the nutrient solutions at 50 and 75%. Ascorbic acid levels fell with the solutions at 50 and 75%, and total phenols and antioxidant activity increased with the solutions at 25 and 50%. The 80:20 and 60:40 volcanic rock:vermicompost substrates similarly increased the length, diameter, number, weight, total phenols and antioxidant activity of the fruit. Yield increased with a greater proportion of the vermicompost. The solution at 50% and the volcanic rock:vermicompost mixture 80:20 were the best conditions for the content of phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, as well as diverse quality variables, although the 60:40 proportion was more favorable for yield.
E. Cruz-Crespo, M.T. Sumaya-Martínez, Á. Can-Chulim, J. Pineda-Pineda, R. Bugarín-Montoya y G. Aguilar-Benítez. 2015.

In order to estimate the frequence of Candida dubliniensis in clinical samples in F. J. Muñiz Infectious Diseases Hospital, a total of 388 yeasts from September 2005 to August 2007. There were 212 isolates which presented a green color on CHROMagar® Candida medium and produced germ tubes and chlamidoconidiae in milk-agar; so as to distinguish whether they corresponded to Candida albicans or C. dubliniensis, different phenotypical methods were utilized. It was also evaluated the usefulness of each one in order to suggest a simple, economic and reliable identification algorithm. Each isolate was subcultured in two chromogenic media and then, the following determinations were done: chlamidospores production in Staib-agar, tomato-carrot-agar and tobacco-agar, colonies macromorphology was also studied in the last medium; opacity-test in Tween 80-CaCl2 agar (lipase activity), growing capacity at 45 °C, and D-xylose assimilation. Thirteen strains (6.1%) corresponded to C. dubliniensis. The difference in color between both species on chromogenic media was not so stressed as it is pointed out in some works. The more specific and sensitive tests were the ability to grow at 45 °C, D-xylose assimilation, color and macroscopic appearance in tobacco-agar. Between 11.6% and 15.1% of C. albicans strains produced chlamidoconidiae in the 3 differential media tested. The opacity halo (lipase) was evident in 95.6% of C. albicans isolates but 2 out of 13 C. dubliniensis also presented precipitation halo. We consider that at least 3 different phenotypical methods should be used to distinguish properly these two species since none of the tests is absolutely sensitive or specific.

A high dosage of albendazole (ABZ) is required for treating systemic helminthe infections because of its low solubility. Aiming at increasing ABZ solubility, complexation with beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using aqueous and acetic acid solutions as ABZ solubilizer was studied. In aqueous β-CD, complexation increased solubility 53.4 times, giving a complex equilibrium constant of 1266 L mol-1 with a maximum ABZ concentration of 276 µmol L-1 for 16.3 mmol L-1 β-CD. For complexation in 1.05 mol L-1 acetic acid, UV absorbance spectra and ¹H-NMR analysis confirmed complex formation. The UV absorbance of ABZ/acid acetic/β-CD solutions was modeled by the formation of two complexes with molar ratios 1:1 and 1:2 ABZ:β-CD. When neutralized with NaOH these solutions did not form precipitates only for the ABZ:β-CD molar ratios of 1:8 and 1:10, showing that ABZ solubility could be increased 306 times. Results show that high β-CD molar ratios hold ABZ in solution by complexation enhanced by the acetate anion.

The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium of methylene blue (MB) onto reticulated formic lignin (RFL) from sugar cane bagasse was studied. The adsorption process is pH, temperature and ionic strength (µ) dependent and obeys the Langmuir model. Conditions for higher adsorption rate and capacity were determined. The faster adsorption (12 hours) and higher adsorption capacity (34.20 mg.g-1) were observed at pH = 5.8 (acetic acid-sodium acetate aqueous buffer), 50 ºC and 0.1 ionic strength. Under temperature (50 ºC) control and occasional mechanical stirring it took from 1 to 10 days to reach the equilibrium.

Aims: The epidemiologic analysis inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a powerful research tool to assess the contribution of environmental factors to its etiology. IBD has been reported to have varying frequencies in different parts of the world, and there seem to be significant differences in the disease pattern and clinical course. The aim of the present study was to assess the disease pattern of IBD in Asturias (Spain). Patients and methods: A descriptive epidemiological population based study, retrospective (1954-1993) and prospective (1994-97), was performed to study 1018 patients found, bigger than 14 years, to have IBD, in five areas of Asturias (Spain) (461.965 inhabitants). Results: During the period of time studied, we diagnosed 1018 IBD [565 ulcerative colitis (55.5%), 415 (40.8%) Crohn´s disease and 38 (3.7%) indeterminate colitis], with 482 females (47.2%), 536 males (52.8%), and male/female: 1.11. Age at diagnosis were 39.49 ± 1.08 (95% CI : 38.41 - 40.57); (UC: 43.95 ± 1.47; CD: 33.53 ± 1.51; IC: 38.26 ± 5.14. p = 0.000. Age at onset previously at diagnosis for UC: 42.84 ± 1.34; CD: 30.68 ± 1.40; IC: 36.74 ± 4.86 (p = 0.000). Diagnosis criteria: UC: syntomatic 97.34% (p = ns), endoscopy 96.63% (p = 0.000), pathology 90.26% (p = 0.000). CD: radiology 83.61% (p = 0.000). Study level in CD: 57.57 (p = 0.0005). Family history: 8.4%. The most frequent involvement at diagnosis of UC was proctitis only, in 13.6%, 26.9% rectum and sigmoid, 26% left colitis, 20% pancolitis, and in CD colon only, in 16.7%, 30.3% terminal ileum, 41.3% ileo-colon of the patients. This also helps to explain the differences in severity, need for surgery, and survival noted between community based studies. Conclusions: We highlight the uniformity of distribution of the inflammatory bowel disease in relation to types and sex. The high frequency of familial Crohn's disease suggests a genetic predisposition. Highlighting a bigger morbilidad for the Crohn’s Disease reflected in the surgical requirements, but however with smaller mortality that in ulcerative colitis.

Aims: To know and to compare Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Incidence and Prevalence rates in in five areas of Asturias (Spain). We conducted a prospective epidemiologic study of IBD in the Province of Liege (1 million inhabitants). Patient and methods: We conducted a descriptive, populational, collaborative epidemiologic study, retrospective between 1954 and 1993 and prospective between 1994 and 1997. All patients diagnosed according to a standard protocol for case ascertainment and definition of IBD, aged 14 years or more are included, in five areas of Asturias (Spain) (461.965 inhabitants). Results: For the period 1954 to 1997, 1018 IBD have been diagnosed [565 ulcerative colitis (UC) (55.5%), 415 Crohn's disease (CD) (40.8%) and 38 undefined IBD (IC) (3.7%)]; [482 women (47.2%), 536 males (52.8%)]. In the 4 year-prospective period, 306 cases were collected: 176 UC (57.51%), 110 CD (35.94) and 20 IC (6.53%); UC/CD: 1.6. Without appreciable and significant differences between Frequency of illness groups and sexes. IBD incidence rate (per 100,000 per year) (1954-97) is 5.12 ( 95% CI = 3.05 - 7.18) (UC: 2.84; CD: 2.08; IC: 0.19; UC/CD 1.36). In the 4 years- prospective study, IBD incidence rate is 16.55 (95% CI=12.84 - 20.25), (UC: 9.52; CD: 5.95; IC: 1.08; UC/CD: 1.6). IBD prevalence rate in 1997 is 205,21 (95% CI= 182.14-227.29), (UC: 109.96; CD: 87.45; IC: 7.79). Comparisons have settled down among the studied areas, without finding differences statistically significant. Conclusions: Inflammatory Bowel Disease incidence and prevalence rates of in our region are homogeneous between the cities investigated and superior than those historically reported in Spanish studies. These results were similar to those observed in European studies.
