Abstract This article evaluates the resilient modulus and permanent deformation of granular materials of different lithological origins widely used as a pavements base layer in south Brazil. For this, a single particle size distribution was determined for the materials that were subjected to physical, chemical, mechanical characterizations, especially resilient modulus and permanent deformation by repeated load triaxial tests. It was noticed that the denser materials had a higher resilient modulus generated by increase in the sample's stiffness. For permanent deformation this tendency has not been maintained for all materials. Therefore, the granulation and structure of the materials can influence long-term tests. The Guimarães’ model has proven to be adequate for the sample evaluation. For the shakedown research, samples showed accommodation and creep shakedown. The samples that presented accommodation had an increase in the resilient modulus after permanent deformation, while those that presented creep increased or decreased resilient modulus according to the material origin. RESUMO O pavimento é considerado um sistema de múltiplas camadas finitas, sujeito às tensões, deformações e deslocamentos provenientes das solicitações cíclicas do tráfego. A fundação da estrutura deve apresentar capacidade de suporte compatível com a intensidade e frequência com a qual será solicitada. Sob essa perspectiva, o presente estudo avalia o desempenho de quatro solos com origens geológicas diferentes, usualmente encontrados em subleitos rodoviários no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, com base em princípios da Mecânica dos Pavimentos. A metodologia aplicada nesse estudo consistiu em simulações numéricas assistidas por dois programas computacionais: AEMC/SisPav e AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design. As análises mecanicistas foram realizadas para avaliar a resposta do solo frente à deformação resiliente e à resistência ao cisalhamento, importantes propriedades no emprego de solos em pavimentação. Os resultados mostraram que a deformação resiliente apresenta um papel preponderante no desempenho dos materiais, visto que, para os solos analisados, não há qualquer indício de ruptura por cisalhamento, tanto como material de subleito rodoviário como fundação de pavimentos de baixo volume de tráfego. Isso, porém não afasta a hipótese de altas deformações plásticas. Quanto à deformação resiliente, observou-se ainda a ineficácia do atual método de dimensionamento de pavimentos flexíveis, que não considera o módulo de resiliência dos materiais de pavimentação, resultando no predomínio de ruptura por fadiga, com exceção do solo denominado de CB que poderá levar o pavimento a ruptura por excesso de afundamento de trilha de roda.

ABSTRACT The pavement is considered a system of multiple finite layers, subject to tensions, deformations and displacements from cyclical traffic demands. The foundation of the structure must have support capacity compatible with the intensity and frequency with which it will be requested. From this perspective, the present study evaluates the performance of four soils with different geological origins, usually found in road subgrades in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, based on the principles of Pavement Mechanics. The methodology applied in this study consisted of numerical simulations assisted by two computational programs: AEMC/SisPav and AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design. The mechanistic analyzes were performed to evaluate the soil response to resilient deformation and shear strength, important properties in the use of paving soils. The results showed that the resilient deformation has a preponderant role in the performance of the materials, since, for the analyzed soils, there is no evidence of shear rupture, both as a road subgrade material and as a foundation of low traffic pavements. This, however, does not rule out the hypothesis of high plastic deformations. Regarding the resilient deformation, it was also observed the inefficiency of the current flexible pavement design method, which does not consider the resilience modulus of the paving materials, resulting in the predominance of fatigue rupture, with the exception of the CB soil, which could lead to pavement to rupture by excessive wheel track rutting.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the development of shrub live cuttings and their effect on slope stability. Vertical in situ pullout tests and measurements of Phyllanthus sellowianus shoots and roots of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 14 months old were conducted. Stability analyses were conducted for slopes with planar and curved rupture surfaces and for soils with and without plants. The results showed that seasons affected plants growth and their ability to provide soil strength. Soil shear strength values ranged from 4.5 kPa (2 months old) to 47.6 kPa (14 months old). The critical factors of safety (FS) for slopes for both planar and curved rupture surfaces were found in the absence of plants and reached the stability condition (FS>2) with plants at 4 (planar) and 6 (curved) months old.

RESUMO Os aterros sanitários (ASs) são considerados uma das soluções mais utilizadas para a disposição final de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSUs) em países em desenvolvimento. Entretanto, um dos problemas são os valores elevados de deslocamentos verticais (recalques), pois os resíduos são muito compressíveis, sofrem degradação com o tempo e, consequentemente, podem ocasionar danos nos sistemas estruturais dos ASs. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os recalques de dois ASs verificando a eficiência de alguns modelos de previsão de recalques. A avaliação foi realizada nos ASs de Minas do Leão e de São Leopoldo, comparando os recalques medidos com os previstos e ajustando os modelos utilizados com base nos dados históricos. A partir das análises realizadas, foi possível verificar que os quatro modelos analisados obtiveram boa aderência entre os valores medidos e previstos.

ABSTRACT Landfills are considered one of the best solutions for the disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in developing countries. However, one problem is the high values of vertical displacements (settlements), because the residues are very compressible and undergo degradation with time and consequently may cause damage to structural systems landfill. Theobjective is to evaluate the settlements of two landfills checking the efficiency of some settlements prediction models. The evaluation was performed in Minas do Leão and São Leopoldo Landfills, comparing the measured settlements with the predicted and adjusting the models used based on historical data. From the analyzes, we found that the four analyzed models showed good adhesion between the measured and predicted values.

RESUMO Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a técnica da reciclagem a quente em misturas asfálticas com relação às propriedades mecânicas, a fim de verificar a adequabilidade de seu emprego na substituição de material granular virgem por material reciclado do pavimento (fresado) em diferentes porcentagens, visando sua aplicação em camadas de pavimento. Para atingir este objetivo, foram realizados ensaios laboratoriais a fim de avaliar misturas contendo 10%, 20% e 30% de adição de fresado, comparadas a uma mistura de referência sem adição do agregado reciclado. Para avaliação de rigidez foram realizados ensaios de módulo de resiliência (MR) e módulo dinâmico uniaxial. Além destes, foram realizados ensaios de resistência à tração indireta (RT) e Flow Number (FN) para avaliação de resistência mecânica e, também, ensaios de dano por umidade induzida, através do Lottman Modificado, e desgaste no ensaio Cântabro, para avaliação das propriedades de adesividade e coesão das misturas, respectivamente. Através da análise dos resultados foi possível verificar uma importante economia do teor de ligante adicionado, visto que o material fresado contém ligante envelhecido e, assim, a redução de ligante novo variou de 12,9% até 35,7% para misturas com 10% e 30% de material reciclado, respectivamente. O experimento indicou que a adição de fresado em misturas asfálticas afeta o módulo e aumenta a rigidez das misturas; o ensaio de FN mostrou o ganho de resistência à deformação permanente das misturas, bem como não houve problemas significativos de desgaste e de adesividade, ou seja, as perdas encontradas são insignificantes e não comprometem a utilização deste material.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to evaluate the technique of hot recycling in asphalt mixtures relative to the mechanical properties, for the purpose of verify the adequacy of their employment in substitution of virgin granular material for Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in different percentages, for the application in layers of pavement. To achieve the purpose of this study, laboratory tests were made to evaluate the mechanical properties and adhesiveness of mixtures containing 10% addition of RAP, 20% and 30%, compared to a reference mix without RAP. For stiffness evaluation were used resilient modulus tests (RM) and uniaxial dynamic modulus test. Besides these tests was performed the indirect tensile strength tests (RT) and Flow Number test (FN) for mechanical evaluation, damage tests induced moisture through the Modified Lottman test and Cantabro abrasion, for evaluation of the properties of adhesion and cohesion of the mixtures, respectively. Analyzing the results, an important economy of asphaltic binder was observed, whereas the RAP contains aged binder It´s possible to reduce the new binder content between 12.9% and 35.7% for mixtures with 10% and 30% recycled material, respectively. The experiment indicated the RAP addition affects the modulus and increases the stiffness of the mixtures; the FN test showed the resistance gain to the permanent deformation of the mixtures as well as there were no significant problems of adhesion, in other words, the losses are insignificant and do not compromise the use of this material.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou avaliar, através de ensaios laboratoriais, a viabilidade da utilização de material fresado puro e estabilizado (mecânica, granulométrica e quimicamente) em camadas de pavimentos flexíveis. Os materiais fresados são oriundos da BR-290 e da ERS-509 no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Foi realizada estabilização granulométrica, sendo determinado o teor de 70% de material fresado e 30% de agregado natural, sendo bastante efetiva na elevação do ISC (de 56 para 95% e de 21 para 68%, para o fresado da BR-290 e ERS-509). Para os ensaios compressão simples foram moldados corpos-de-prova cilíndricos de 10x20 cm com diferentes teores de cimento Portland (CP-IV 32), sendo determinados os teores de 4,86% (BR-290) e 5,37% (ERS-569) a partir da resistência à compressão de 2,1 MPa aos 28 dias. A partir dos resultados obtidos, em uma segunda etapa da pesquisa utilizando somente o material fresado da ERS-509, foram moldados corpos de prova para determinação da resistência à compressão, da resistência à tração e do módulo de resiliência; sendo nestes substituído, em massa, o CP-IV em 15, 30 e 50% por cinza de casca de arroz moída (#325 e #500), colocados em câmara úmida por 7, 28 e 160 dias. A análise dos resultados mostrou que para compressão simples e à tração, a substituição de 15% de cimento por CCA se mostrou eficiente, não havendo queda de resistência comparado as amostras de referência. Também fica evidente a eficácia da CCA, apresentando resultados positivos sempre que comparados àquelas misturas somente com o real teor de cimento Portland utilizado, juntamente com o apelo ambiental se torna uma alternativa interessante de utilização em camadas de pavimentos.

ABSTRACT This research aims to evaluate, through laboratory testing, the feasibility of using pure and stabilized reclaimed asphalt pavement (mechanical, chemical and grading) in layers of flexible pavements. The milled materials are from BR-290 and ERS-509 roadways. Grading stabilization was performed and determined the level of 70% of milled material and 30% of virgin aggregate. For testing of compressive strength were molded into test specimens of 10x20 cm with different levels of Portland cement (CP IV-32), and determine the content of 4,86% (BR-290) and 5,37% (ERS-569) from the compressive strength of 2.1 MPa at 28 days. From these results, specimens were molded for testing the axial compressive strength, indirect tensile strength and resilient modulus; in these specimens, the cement was replaced by rice husk ash (mesh #325 and #500) in ratios of 15, 30 and 50% by weight of cement content, and put into moist chamber for 7, 28 and 160 curing days. The results showed that for compressive and tensile strength, the replacement of 15% of cement by CCA was efficient, with no drop resistance compared to the reference samples. Also evident the effectiveness of CCA, showing positive results when compared to those mixes only with the real content of Portland cement used and with the environmental appeal becomes an interesting alternative for use in pavement layers.

O uso de carcaças de pneus, na engenharia civil, envolve diversas soluções criativas e aplicações diversificadas. O presente artigo apresenta análises paramétricas baseadas em ensaios laboratoriais com diferentes tipos de pneumáticos, altura dos muros, materiais de preenchimento, níveis de água e ângulos de atrito interno do solo. Realizou-se o pré-dimensionamento de estruturas de contenção arrimadas para 376 diferentes combinações. Foi feita, também, uma análise estatística da influência que cada variável utilizada, na análise paramétrica, exerce sobre a base das estruturas pré-dimensionadas. Por fim, é relatada uma experiência realizada com a construção de um muro de arrimo composto por pneus preenchidos com agregados, para contenção de uma encosta localizada à margem do arroio Barreiro, no interior do Município de Ijuí - RS, comparando seu custo a uma tradicional estrutura de concreto armado.

The use of scrap tires in civil engineering involves creative solutions and diversified applications. The present paper presents parametric analyses based on laboratory data with different tires, wall heights, filling materials, water levels and soil friction angles. A design draft for 376 different earth retaining structures (combining all variables) was made and a statistical analysis performed to study the effect that each variable had on the base value. Finally, a case study is presented of a tire wall construction near Ijuí City - RS. The cost of this solution is given in comparison with the traditional concrete ones.
