RESUMO A diversidade de artrópodes-praga tem exigido a integração de diferentes métodos de controle. Assim, aplicações de óleos essenciais com atividade inseticida, repelente ou fagoinibidora, associadas às liberações de inimigos naturais, podem potencializar o manejo integrado de pragas, desde que apresentem seletividade. Nesse contexto, o objetivo foi avaliar a seletividade dos óleos de alecrim-pimenta Lippia origanoides Kunth (Verbenaceae), citronela Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. (Poaceae) e capim-santo C. citratus (DC) Stapf., sobre Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), comparando cinco concentrações (0,01; 0,05; 0,1; 0,5 e 1,0%), além da testemunha (detergente neutro à 1,0%). Avaliou-se a toxicidade residual por meio da mortalidade de adultos, calculando-se concentrações letais (CL50), além das reduções no parasitismo em ovos de Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) e seletividade aos parasitoides. Os três óleos exibiram seletividade ao parasitoide T. pretiosum, causando mortalidade entre 17,2 (alecrim-pimenta) e 32,2% (capim-santo), na menor concentração. Destacou-se o óleo essencial de alecrim-pimenta com CL50 de 0,43%, apenas 22% de redução do parasitismo (Classe 1 - Inócuo) e 88% de emergência quando à 0,01%. A CL50 do óleo de capim-santo foi 0,15%, com 34% de redução do parasitismo (Classe 2 - Levemente nocivo) e 74% de adultos emergidos. Já para o óleo de citronela, a CL50 foi de 0,12%, 46% de redução (Classe 2 - Levemente nocivo) e emergência de 62%. A seletividade dos óleos essenciais encontrada pode viabilizar liberações de T. pretiosum, integrando controle biológico e inseticidas botânicos, à medida que ovos não pulverizados, sejam parasitados por T. pretiosum.

ABSTRACT The diversity of arthropod pests has required the combined use of various control methods. The application of essential oils showing insecticidal, repellent or phage-inhibiting activity, together with the release of natural enemies, can improve integrated pest management provided the oils display selectivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of the oils of rosemary pepper [Lippia origanoides Kunth (Verbenaceae)], citronella [Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. (Poaceae)] and lemongrass [C. citratus (DC) Stapf.] for Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), comparing five concentrations (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0%), and a control (neutral detergent at 1.0%). Residual toxicity was evaluated using adult mortality, calculating lethal concentrations (LC50) in addition to the reductions in parasitism in eggs of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and selectivity for the par asitoids. The three oils showed selectivity for the parasitoid T. pretiosum, resulting in a mortality rate of between 17.2% (rosemary pepper) and 32.2% (lemongrass) at the lowest concentration. The essential oil of rosemary pepper stood out with an LC50 of 0.43%, a reduction of only 22% in parasitism (Class 1 - Innocuous) and 88.0% emergence, at a dose of 0.01%. The LC50 of the lemongrass oil was 0.15%, with a 34.0% reduction in parasitism (Class 2 - Slightly harmful) and 74.0% emerged adults. For the citronella oil, the LC50 was 0.12%, with a reduction of 46.0% (Class 2 - Slightly harmful) and emergence of 62.0%. The selectivity of the essential oils makes possible to release T. pretiosum, integrating biological control with botanical insecticides, as long as non-sprayed eggs are parasitised by T. pretiosum.

ABSTRACT Objective: To validate a longitudinal care program to assist adolescents in their first pregnancy. Methods: Methodological study for face and content validation of a home visit program. Data were collected using the Delphi technique, by sending the guidelines of Programa Jovens Mães Cuidadoras by e-mail. In data analysis, a content validity index with an established value of 0.75 was used. Results: The sample was 11 professionals, among whom seven were experts in several health areas and four were exclusive nursing professionals. In group 1, the obtained content validity index was compatible with the expected value, but group 2 indicated that the values descriptive of the sample regarding the content of four items resulted in an index and agreement level lower than the established number, that is, 0.75. Conclusion: The home visit program was validated as for its face and content aspects. The suggestions given by the referees were incorporated into a new version of the program and are available in the present paper.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Validar un programa de cuidado longitudinal para atención de adolescentes en su primer embarazo. Método: Estudio metodológico de validación de apariencia y contenido. Datos recolectados mediante técnica Delphi, habiéndose enviado las directrices del Programa Jóvenes Madres Cuidadoras vía e-mail. Análisis de datos realizado utilizando índice de validez de contenido, estableciéndose valor de 0,75. Resultados: Muestra compuesta por 11 profesionales; siete de ellos expertos en diversas áreas de la salud, y cuatro profesionales exclusivamente del área de Enfermería. En el grupo 1, el índice de validez de contenido entregó valores esperables. El grupo 2 indicó que los valores descriptivos de la muestra respecto del contenido de cuatro ítems obtuvieron índice y concordancia inferior al valor establecido del 75%. Conclusión: El programa de visitas fue validado en cuanto a contenido y apariencia. Las sugerencias realizadas por los evaluadores fueron incorporadas en una nueva versión del Programa, estando disponibles en este informe.

RESUMO Objetivo: validar um programa de cuidado longitudinal para assistir adolescentes na sua primeira gravidez. Método: estudo metodológico de validação de aparência e de conteúdo. Os dados foram coletados pela técnica Delphi, por meio do envio das diretrizes do Programa Jovens Mães Cuidadoras via e-mail. Na análise dos dados, foi utilizado o índice de validade de conteúdo com valor estabelecido de 0,75. Resultados: a amostra foi composta de 11 profissionais, entre os quais sete eram experts de diversas áreas da saúde e quatro eram profissionais exclusivos da área de Enfermagem. No grupo 1, o índice de validade de conteúdo ocorreu dentro do esperado, mas o grupo 2 indicou que os valores descritivos da amostra no que diz respeito ao conteúdo de quatro itens obtiveram índice e concordância abaixo do número previamente estabelecido (75%). Conclusão: O programa de visita foi validado nos aspectos de conteúdo e de aparência. As sugestões feitas pelos juízes foram incorporadas em uma nova redação do Programa e estão disponibilizadas neste relatório.

Este artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar uma reflexão teórica a respeito das possibilidades e limites da utilização do CompHP na formação de profissionais de saúde no Brasil. As bases teóricas que dão suporte a essa reflexão foram buscadas na literatura científica e ajustadas nos debates que aconteceram no interior de uma disciplina de pósgraduação stricto sensu, em 2012. Diversos trabalhos têm discutido e elaborado diretrizes para o estabelecimento de competências em promoção da saúde em todo o mundo, porém, as discussões sobre competências profissionais para a promoção da saúde que têm sido construídas no Brasil são ainda circunscritas a determinadas práticas profissionais. A partir das análises dos textos científicos, fica evidente que as diretrizes do CompHP foram cunhadas para se pensar a formação e a prática em promoção da saúde no contexto europeu, porém, as características do modelo de formação profissional praticado no Brasil podem se beneficiar muito com a proposta de competências que este documento traz.

A babesiose é uma doença hemolítica de ocorrência mundial, causada por protozoários do gênero Babesia(Apicomplexa), que são transmitidos por carrapatos a diversos mamíferos, incluindo o homem. O objetivo deste estudo foi otimizar um método molecular para a detecção de fragmento do 18S rDNA de Babesia canis, Babesia vogeli, Babesia rossi ou Babesia gibsoni com base em uma única semi-nested (snPCR), comparando sua eficiência com um protocolo de PCR simples. Para isso, 100 amostras de sangue de cães com suspeita de hemoparasitoses foram analisadas e, enquanto o protocolo de PCR simples indicou somente 5% (5/100) de amostras positivas, o protocolo de snPCR, com 22% (22/100) de amostras positivas, apresentou maior sensibilidade (pvalor = 0,0000). Este resultado está de acordo com outros estudos que mostram a maior sensibilidade de detecção dos testes baseado em nested ou snPCR. Assim, como uma forma de prevenir resultados falso-negativos devido à baixa parasitemia, sugere-se que este protocolo seja preferencialmente usado nos estudos epidemiológicos de babesiose canina, em especial naqueles que tratam da sua prevalência.

Babesiosis is a hemolytic disease caused by protozoans of the genus Babesia (Apicomplexa). This disease occurs worldwide and is transmitted by ticks to a variety of mammals, including humans. The objective of the present study was to optimize a molecular approach for the detection of a fragment of 18S rDNA of Babesia canis, Babesia vogeli, Babesia rossi or Babesia gibsoni based on a single semi-nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and compare the efficiency of this approach with that of a simple PCR protocol. To this end, 100 blood samples collected from dogs with suspected hemoparasite infections were analyzed. A comparison of the results of simple PCR and semi-nested PCR indicated a highly significant difference (p value = 0.0000). While only five (5%) of the samples tested positive using the simple protocol, 22 (22%) were positive using the snPCR technique. The results of this study reinforce the findings of previous studies, which have demonstrated the greater sensitivity of tests based on nested or semi-nested PCR. Therefore, to avoid false-negative results due to low levels of parasitemia, we suggest the preferential use of this protocol in epidemiological studies of canine babesiosis, particularly those that require reliable estimates of the prevalence of infection.

Introduction  Pleomorphic adenoma, also known as mixed tumor, is the most common benign tumor of the major and minor salivary glands. The occurrence of pleomorphic adenoma of the tongue base is very rare, and very few cases have been reported in the literature. Objective  The authors present a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma of the tongue base and a review of the literature. Case Report  A 55-year-old woman had an extensive cervical mass, with little pain, from the submental level to the level below the hyoid bone. Fiberoptic endoscopic examination showed an extensive mass at the base of the tongue with considerable reduction in the airway. Magnetic resonance image scan revealed a contrast-enhancing mass of heterogeneous density over the base of the tongue of 8 × 8 × 7 cm and a reduction of the hypopharyngeal airway. Biopsy of the lesion was performed along with a tracheostomy due to the bulging tongue base and acute respiratory failure. Histologic examination with an immunohistochemistry study revealed a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma. The excision of the tumor was performed by a lateral pharyngotomy approach and the total mass was excised. Conclusion  The authors consider the rarity of this case and show that this is the 11th and the largest pleomorphic adenoma reported in the English-language medical literature.

INTRODUCTION: Eagle's syndrome is characterized by cervicopharyngeal signs and symptoms associated with elongation of the styloid apophysis. This elongation may occur through ossification of the stylohyoid ligament, or through growth of the apophysis due to osteogenesis triggered by a factor such as trauma. Elongation of the styloid apophysis may give rise to intense facial pain, headache, dysphagia, otalgia, buzzing sensations, and trismus. Precise diagnosis of the syndrome is difficult, and it is generally confounded by other manifestations of cervicopharyngeal pain. OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of Eagle's syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old man reported lateral pain in his neck that had been present for 30 years. Computed tomography (CT) of the neck showed elongation and ossification of the styloid processes of the temporal bone, which was compatible with Eagle's syndrome. Surgery was performed for bilateral resection of the stylohyoid ligament by using a transoral and endoscopic access route. The patient continued to present pain laterally in the neck, predominantly on his left side. CT was performed again, which showed elongation of the styloid processes. The patient then underwent lateral cervicotomy with resection of the stylohyoid process, which partially resolved his painful condition. FINAL COMMENTS: Patients with Eagle's syndrome generally have a history of chronic pain. Appropriate knowledge of this disease is necessary for adequate treatment to be provided. The importance of diagnosing this uncommon and often unsuspected disease should be emphasized, given that correct clinical-surgical treatment is frequently delayed. The diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome is clinical and radiographic, and the definitive treatment in cases of difficult-to-control pain is surgical.

INTRODUÇÃO: Rinoscleroma é uma doença infecciosa crônica do tipo granulomatosa causada pela bactéria Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. Acomete a mucosa do trato respiratório, mais frequentemente o nariz. É considerada endêmica em determinadas regiões com África e América Central, porém é rara no Brasil. O acometimento nasal ocorre em 3 fases: catarral, granulomatosa e cicatricial. Em todo o seu curso a doença apresenta sintomatologia inespecífica, daí a dificuldade em ser diagnosticada. Seu diagnóstico é estabelecido através de cultura ou pelo encontro de células de Mikulicz ou corpúsculo de Russel no estudo anatomopatológico. O tratamento consiste em antibioticoterapia por longo período, associada ou não a cirurgia. OBJETIVO: Este relato tem por objetivo ilustrar um caso de rinoscleroma em uma paciente jovem com queixa de obstrução nasal bilateral de longa data e cefaleia. O intuito é alertar os otorrinolaringologistas para o diagnóstico desta doença rara, que se apresenta com sintomas inespecíficos e semelhantes a inúmeras patologias que acometem a região nasal.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinoscleroma is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease, caused by the bacterium Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. Affects the respiratory tract mucosa, more frequent in the nose. Is considered endemic in certain regions like Africa and Central America, but is rare in Brazil. The nasal involvement occurs in 3 phases: catarrhal, granulomatous and sclerotic stage. In all its course the disease presents nonspecific symptoms, and because of that, the difficulty of being diagnosed. Its diagnosis is established by culture or by the meeting of Mikulicz cell or Russel corpuscles in the anatomopathological study. The treatment consists in a long-term antibiotic, associated or not to a surgery. OBJECTIVE: This report aims ilustrate a case of rhinoscleroma in a female young patient complaining of bilateral nasal obstruction, long standing and headache. The intent is alert the otorhinolaringologists in diagnosing this rare disease, which presents itself with nonspecific symptoms as like numerous pathologies that affect the nasal region.

O tratamento da surdez súbita é uma das questões mais controversas da Otologia. No entanto, os corticoides sistêmicos têm sido a opção mais escolhida por referidos autores como padrão ouro de tratamento. O uso de corticoide intratimpânico como terapia de segunda linha para tratamento de casos refratários de surdez súbita tem sido relatado e os resultados promissores têm feito alguns autores promoverem o seu uso como terapia de primeira linha, indicando-a para todos os casos de surdez súbita. OBJETIVOS: Descrever essa nova modalidade de tratamento e avaliar a sua segurança e eficácia em quatorze pacientes tratados após falha da corticoterapia oral. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Trata-se de estudo analítico prospectivo em que quatorze pacientes portadores de surdez súbita neurossensorial foram tratados com metilprednisolona intratimpânica após falha da corticoterapia oral. Limiares tonais e o índice de reconhecimento de fala pré-tratamento e pós-tratamento foram analisados. RESULTADOS: Dez dos quatorze pacientes tratados com metilprednisolona intratimpânica apresentaram recuperação da audição superior a 20 dB nos limiares tonais ou 20% no IRF. CONCLUSÃO: Três injeções intratimpânicas de metilprednisolona aumentaram os limiares tonais e índices de reconhecimento da fala em um grupo de pacientes portadores de surdez súbita neurossensorial que não obtiveram benefício após corticoterapia oral.

Treatment in sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a contentious issue, today, oral steroids are the most common choice and considered the best treatment option, but the use of intratympanic steroids has become an attractive alternative, especially in cases when systemic therapy fails, or to avoid the side effects of the systemic use of steroids. AIM: To describe the results of intratympanic methylprednisolone in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss after failure of oral prednisolone. METHODS: In a prospective study fourteen patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss were treated with intratympanic methylprednisolone after failing in the treatment with systemic steroids. Pretreatment and post-treatment audiometric evaluations including pure tone average (PTA) and speech reception thresholds (SRT) were analyzed. RESULTS: Ten from 14 patients treated with intra-tympanic methylprednisolone presented with hearing recovery > 20 dB in PTA or 20% in SRT. CONCLUSION: Three intratympanic injections of methylprednisolone improved pure-tone average or speech discrimination scores for a subset of sudden hearing loss subjects that failed to benefit from oral steroids.

OBJETIVO: Comparar os níveis de burnout em dois grupos de policiais civis, considerando a área de atuação dos mesmos (atividade laboral interna ou externa). MÉTODO: Utilizando a versão em português do Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), um grupo de 35 policiais envolvidos em atividades externas foi comparado com um grupo de 25 policiais envolvidos em atividades internas. Utilizou-se o teste t de Student para comparar o escore total da escala, bem como os fatores constituintes da mesma. RESULTADOS: Considerando-se um nível de significância de 95%, não houve diferenças entre os dois grupos para o escore total da escala (p < 0,383) nem para os três fatores constituintes da mesma, que são: esgotamento emocional (p < 0,76), realização (p < 0,11) e despersonalização (p < 0,65). CONCLUSÃO: Esses resultados sugerem que os sintomas vinculados à síndrome não são determinados pelo tipo de atividade desempenhada. Entretanto, estudos mais amplos que possam melhor investigar essa síndrome e sua relação com o trabalho policial se mostram necessários.

OBJECTIVE: To compare burnout levels in two groups of police officers, considering their working activities (administrative vs. operational). METHODS: Using a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), a group of 35 police officers involved in operational activities was compared to a group of 25 officers involved in administrative activities. The Student t test was used to compare the total scores obtained in the scale, as well as the scores obtained individually in each of the factors that constitute it. RESULTS: Considering a level of significance of 95%, no difference was observed between the two groups in the total scores obtained in the scale (p < 0.383) and neither in the three factors that constitute it, namely, emotional exhaustion (p < 0.76), personal accomplishment (p < 0.11) and depersonalization (p < 0.65). CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this study suggest that the symptoms associated with the burnout syndrome are not determined by the type of activity performed. However, further studies are necessary for a better investigation of this syndrome and of its relation with the police officer job.

Se ha utilizado el test t de Student para comparar el escore total de la escala, así como los factores que la constituyen. RESULTADOS: Considerándose un nivel de significación del 95% no hubo diferencia entre los dos grupos para el escore total de la escala (p < 0,383) y para los tres factores de constitución: agotamiento emocional (p < 0,76), realización (p < 0,11) y despersonalización (p < 0,65). CONCLUSIÓN: Estos resultados sugieren que los síntomas vinculados al síndrome no son determinados por el tipo de actividad desempeñada. Por otra parte, se necesita estudios más amplios para mejor investigar este síndrome y su relación con en trabajo de los policiales.
