ABSTRACT This study aimed to calibrate and test the SARRA-H (Système d’Analyse Régionale des Risques Agroclimatologiques) crop model for cowpea, as well as conducting a climate risk zoning for this crop in a region located in Eastern Amazon, allowing the identification of locations and sowing dates that favor the production considering both the water deficit and the probability of occurrence of severe rains during the harvest period. The model was calibrated and validated with data from experiments conducted between 2013 and 2016 in the municipality of Castanhal, PA, Brazil. Low climate risk areas were defined as those that had a water requirement satisfaction index (WRSI) greater than or equal to 0.5 in the reproductive phase combined with the occurrence of rainfall below 20 mm at the harvest for, at least, 80% of the years for which planting was simulated. The model was able to simulate the water balance, growth and development of cowpea under the climate and soil conditions of the studied location with high precision and accuracy. The optimal period for sowing cowpea comprises the interval between June 5th and 25th for regions located above 2° S and between March 25th and April 15th for regions below 2º S.

Abstract Terpenoids, also named terpenes or isoprenoids, are a family of natural products found in all living organisms. Many plants produce terpenoids as secondary metabolites, and these make up a large part of essential oils. One of most important characteristic is that the compounds are volatile, have odor and can be used in a variety of applications in different industrial segments and traditional medicine. Brazil has a rich and diverse flora that can be used as a source of research for obtaining new molecules. Within the Brazilian flora, it is worth mentioning the Caatinga as an exclusively Brazilian biome where plants adapt to a specific series of weather conditions and therefore become a great storehouse of the terpenoid compounds to be described herein. Fungal infections have become increasingly common, and a great demand for new agents with low toxicity and side effects has thus emerged. Scientists must search for new molecules exhibiting antifungal activity to develop new drugs. This review aims to analyze scientific data from the principal published studies describing the use of terpenes and their biological applications as antifungals. In this work, we describe a sustainable alternative to recover iron from two iron ore tailings (IOT) using hydrogen reduction at relatively low temperatures followed by magnetic separation. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), atomic absorption (AA), Mössbauer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), Raman and thermogravimetry (TG) analyses indicated that the Fe oxide present in the IOTs (sandy tailing (ST) and mud tailings (MT)), can be reduced with H2 at 500 ºC to produce α-Fe. Upon magnetic separation the mud tailing produced a 77 wt.% magnetic fraction increasing the Fe content from 19.2 to ca. 56 wt.% of Fe. On the other hand, the sandy tailing resulted in a 15 wt.% magnetic fraction increasing the Fe content from 19.2 to 70 wt.%. These results indicate that up to 86% of iron can be recovered from the IOT wastes already in the metallic form which can be very interesting for the steel industry.

A Streptomyces sp. (BRA-384) was selected among nine strains of bacteria isolated from the zoanthids Palythoa caribaeorum due to the high cytotoxic activity presented by its EtOAc extract (inhibitory concentration mean (IC50) of 2 ng mL-1) against colon cancer cell line. From the EtOAc extract of BRA-384 three new chemical entities (A6, A7 and A8) and one dextrorotatory chromomycin (A5), a promising class of anticancer compounds, were identified. The cytotoxicity of chromomycins A5 to A8 was tested against five tumor cell lines (HCT 116 (human colon adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast carcinoma), PC-3M (human metastatic prostate cancer), 501-mel (human metastatic melanoma) and MM200 (metastatic melanoma)). All chromomycins were highly potent showing IC50 values from 0.2 to 133 nM. Chromomycin A5 was consistently the most potent over all tested cells (IC50 values from 0.2 in MM200 to 7.9 nM in PC-3M), inclusive when compared to the standard chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, that presented IC50 values ranging from 147 to 568 nM against MM200 and MCF-7, respectively.

ABSTRACT The cowpea bean presents low productivity in the Pará state, Brazil, due to low soil fertility and climatic adversity, mainly water deficiency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield gap of cowpea bean in northeast of Para state in response to water deficit during its reproductive phase. The experiment was carried out in Castanhal, PA, Brazil, during 2015 and 2016. A randomized block design with six repetitions and four treatments was used; where T1 consisted of 100% replacement of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc), T2 to 50%, T3 to 25% and T4 without irrigation, in the reproductive phase. The yield was determined at R9 stage. The simulations with the SARRAZON model were carried out with different sowing dates. The total deficiencies in the reproductive phase were spatialized considering the 30 locations in order to assess the temporal and spatial seasonality of water availability and the sowing period in the study region. The cowpea bean was sensitive to soil water availability with considerable reductions in productivity due to the increase in water deficit compared to the treatment T1 (100% ETc). When water deficits reached more than 47 mm, there were yield gaps over 20%. According to the spatial variability of simulated water deficiency, the sowing of cowpea bean in regions located above 2° latitude may extend until June 20 without showing high yield gaps.

ABSTRACTThe problems related to bladder storage are many and significant. In addition to effectively impacting the quality of life, they can eventually progress to kidney failure. There are several studies which describe the immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive properties of ADSCs. The aim of this study is to clinically, through sonography, anatomically and physiologically evaluate fresh partial allograft bladder from rabbits using allogeneic ADSCs as immunomodulator agents. For such, 25 rabbits were used, one being a male ADSCs donor, and the other 24 females who underwent simultaneous partial allograft bladder, being treated with cyclosporine (GCi) or mesenchymal stem cells (GCe). It was concluded that ADSCs were sufficient to prevent clinical and ultrasound signs of allograft rejection of the urinary bladder. These bladders retained the anatomophysiological structure for 30 days in rabbits.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis A virus antibodies in HIV-exposed and/or HIV-infected children and adolescents. METHODS: Between September 1996 and August 2002, 352 patients (200 exposed, but not HIV-infected and 152 HIV exposed and infected) were included in this study. These children and adolescents (age ranged between 1 and 14 years) were all followed up at the Pediatric AIDS Clinic of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and had anti-HAV antibodies determined by a commercially available ELISA method (tests for total anti-HAV antibodies and specific IgM antibodies) (Dia Sorin and Radim). Statistical analyses were done with chi-squared and t test. RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatitis A virus antibodies in HIV-infected and HIV-exposed, but uninfected patients was 34% and 19.7%, respectively. We noticed that in the age range between 2 years and 10 years, the group of HIV-infected children presented a higher prevalence of hepatitis A virus antibodies (35.5%) than the group of uninfected children (16.7%) (p = 0.005). In the HIV infected group, children from B and C categories had a prevalence of hepatitis A virus antibodies (40.5%) higher than N and A categories (24.1%) (p = 0.042). Mean age did not differ when children from B and C categories were compared with N and A categories (5.18 and 5.66 years, respectively) (p = 0.617). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of hepatitis A virus antibodies in HIV exposed and/or infected children and adolescents between 1 and 14 years old was 26%. Considering the possibility of HIV infection aggravation when associated with hepatitis A virus infection, we suggest that hepatitis A virus inactivated vaccine should be administered to these patients.

The atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization in graphite oven, as an analytical method, possesses a great advantage of high sensibility detection; due to this advantage, it has been largely accepted as an analytical routine in application and research laboratories. In spite of its large detection power, the application of this methodology is limited by the operation cost and by the chemical interaction of some elements with the graphite tube surface. This work presents the methodologies of formation of tantalum carbide in the surface of graphite tubes by immersion of the graphite tube in aqueous solution of TaF7(2-). The samples obtained following this methodology were thermally treated in order to obtain the tantalum carbide. The homogeneity of the formed layers and their morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy; the formation of tantalum carbide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

This paper presents tantalum electrodeposition in molten fluorides followed by thermal treatment, as a pre-treatment technique to graphite tubes used in spectrometry of atomic absorption in graphite oven. The experiments were carried out using the eutectic FLINAK with addition of 15% (weight %) of K2TaF7. The tantalum anodes were made of tantalum commercial scrap; the cathode was the graphite tube to be electroplated. Tantalum coatings were obtained with high current efficiency at 750 omicron C temperature, 20 mA.cm-2 current density and 120 minutes electrolysis time, under controlled argon atmosphere. The thermal treatment under argon atmosphere was effective to obtain a perfect tantalum carbide layer; X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed tantalum carbide formation. Based on the scanning electronic microscopy analysis results, it was found that the tantalum carbide deposits were adherent to the substrate and were free of porosities, incrustations and microcracks.

This work presents the methodology studied for the formation of a tantalum carbide layer in a graphite surface. The methodology consists of the immersion of the graphite tubes in aqueous suspensions of tantalum and tantalum oxide, with subsequent thermal treatment at 2100 °C. Poly (vinyl alcohol - PVOH) was used in order to facilitate the adherence of the tantalum composite on the tube surface. Parameters such as concentration and temperature of the suspension and the temperature and atmosphere of the thermal treatment were investigated in order to obtain an homogeneous and adherent layer of tantalum carbide. The tantalum carbide layer was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and analysis of phases by X-- ray diffraction.
