The scientific publication landscape is changing quickly, with an enormous increase in options and models. Articles can be published in a complex variety of journals that differ in their presentation format (online-only or in-print), editorial organizations that maintain them (commercial and/or society-based), editorial handling (academic or professional editors), editorial board composition (academic or professional), payment options to cover editorial costs (open access or pay-to-read), indexation, visibility, branding, and other aspects. Additionally, online submissions of non-revised versions of manuscripts prior to seeking publication in a peer-reviewed journal (a practice known as pre-printing) are a growing trend in biological sciences. In this changing landscape, researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology must re-think their priorities in terms of scientific output dissemination. The evaluation processes and institutional funding for scientific publications should also be revised accordingly. This article presents the results of discussions within the Department of Biochemistry, University of São Paulo, on this subject.

As SEO B e C originaram efeito alcalinizante, enquanto a D afetou a glicemia, e a SRL aumentou a cloremia. A SEO UEL não produziu nenhum efeito marcante além da expansão do volume plasmático.
ABSTRACT This work aimed to study the effects of four commercially available oral electrolyte solutions (OES), of a non-commercial OES (OES UEL), and of the lactated Ringer’s solution (LRS) administered orally, on the glycemia and water, electrolyte, and acid base balance of healthy neonatal calves. Six calves were used, all of them received the six OES, one at a time, and each treatment was performed within one day. Venous blood samples were taken, in different moments in the treatment day, for determination of total plasma protein, glycemia and blood gas analysis. Values of SID3 and plasma volume variation were calculated. Repeated measures ANOVA was used for comparison between moments and solutions. The OES studied did not induced changes of high or prolonged magnitude in the water, electrolyte, and acid base balances of the calvesIn conclusion, all OES, with the exception to OES A, led to expansion of the plasma volume. The OES B and C had an alkalizing effect while D affected glycemia and LRS increased chloremia. The OES UEL did not produce any marked effect, besides the expansion of plasma volume.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an intravenous polyionic solution containing 84mEq/L of lactate (L84) on the hydroelectrolyte and acid-base balances when administered quickly or slowly in horses. Five healthy adult horses received the L84 solution, in a volume corresponding to 10% of BW, by continuous intravenous infusion, in two instants: a) rapid infusion (16.66mL/kg/h) during 6 hours; b) slow infusion (8.33mL/kg/h) during 12 hours. Venous blood samples were taken at the beginning of the infusion (hour 0) and 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 hours after. Urine samples were taken at 0, 6, 12, and 24h. pH (blood and urine), pCO2, HCO3-, BE, TPP, L-lactate, Na+, K+, Cl-, AG, SID, Atot, PVV, urine specific gravity, and L-lactate, Na+, K+, and Cl- renal fractional clearance were determined. The L84 solution causes lower magnitude alkalizing effect when administered slowly, due to the gradual correction of the iatrogenic imbalance by the kidneys during the infusion period. The L84 solution infused at a low rate in horses could be recommended in cases where metabolic acidosis is suspected and it is not possible to quantify the imbalance degree.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The melon (Cucumis melo L.) is a fruit highly appreciated for its qualities and its production has been growing and gaining space in the national and in the international market. In regions like the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil, it stands out as a new income alternative for farmers. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the phytochemical potential of some melon cultivars in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul. The phytochemical analysis, using the leaves as pharmacogen, was performed to verify the presence of secondary metabolites such as saponins, coumarins, cardiac glycosides, cyanogenetic glicosides, alkaloids, tannins, anthraquinones, flavonoids and volatile oils. The juice content from the fruits was also evaluated. Among the five analyzed cultivars, Gaucho, Imperial, Hy Mark, Magelan and Cantaloupe, cultivar Gaucho had the greatest variety of secondary metabolites. In the assessment of the juice content, cultivar Magelan was superior compared to the remaining tested cultivars.

The effects of gamma radiation doses of 1.5 and 3.0kGy on chicken breasts packed under conventional or vacuum atmosphere were evaluated. The packed samples were subjected to irradiation and stored under refrigeration (4°C) for 30 days. The radiation was efficient in reducing strict and facultative aerobic mesophiles, total and fecal coliforms, and mainly Salmonella spp. The molds and yeasts were very resistant to radiation. The results suggest that gamma radiation at 3.0kGy can be used to control the microbiota in chicken breast stored under refrigeration, as an alternative to extend the shelf-life for more than ten days and ensure the food safety by eliminating potential pathogens.

Hyptis marrubioides Epling ("hortelã-do-campo") is a medicinal species known for its activities against gastrointestinal and skin infections, pains and cramps. The aim of this work was to evaluate essential oil content and chemical composition in H. marrubioides of different genotypes (purple and white), as well as fresh plant parts (leaves, inflorescences and stem). The studied genotypes were identified based on the inflorescences, which are purple and white. The experimental design was completely randomized, including the three parts of both genotypes, in a 3X2 factorial arrangement, with four replicates. Essential oil was extracted through hydrodistillation for two hours and analyzed using Gas Chromatography attached to a Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The highest essential oil content was found for the inflorescence of purple genotype. Hyptis marrubioides essential oil composition quantitatively varied among the analyzed plant parts and between genotypes. The compound α-thujone had the highest percentage of apex area in inflorescences of purple genotype. The percentages of purple genotype were on average higher than those of white one.

The heart fatty acid-binding protein (HFABP) gene was sequenced in parental animals of a F2 crossing of boars of the Brazilian native Piau breed with commercial sows (Landrace x Large White Pietrain). Primers used for PCR were designed to amplify four exons of the gene. The PCR products were sequenced and compared with the GenBank sequences. Differences between the generated sequences and the GenBank sequences were observed for both genetic groups. A total of 246 F2 animals were genotyped using the Hinf I restriction enzyme. Two genotypes were identified, 198 being animals HH and 48 Hh. The Hinf I SNP was significantly associated with weights of loin (bone-in) (P<0.05), jowl (P<0.05), sirloin (P<0.10), and kidneys (P<0.01). These results showed the potential of the H-FABP gene in marker-assisted selection programs for carcass traits in pigs.

Histamine release induced by plant lectins was studied with emphasis on the carbohydrate specificity, external calcium requirement, metal binding sites, and mast cell heterogeneity and on the importance of antibodies bound to the mast cell membrane to the lectin effect. Peritoneal mast cells were obtained by direct lavage of the rat peritoneal cavity and guinea pig intestine and hamster cheek pouch mast cells were obtained by dispersion with collagenase type IA. Histamine release was induced with concanavalin A (Con A), lectins from Canavalia brasiliensis, mannose-specific Cymbosema roseum, Maackia amurensis, Parkia platycephala, Triticum vulgaris (WGA), and demetallized Con A and C. brasiliensis, using 1-300 µg/ml lectin concentrations applied to Wistar rat peritoneal mast cells, peaking on 26.9, 21.0, 29.1, 24.9, 17.2, 10.7, 19.9, and 41.5%, respectively. This effect was inhibited in the absence of extracellular calcium. The lectins were also active on hamster cheek pouch mast cells (except demetallized Con A) and on Rowett nude rat (animal free of immunoglobulins) peritoneal mast cells (except for mannose-specific C. roseum, P. platycephala and WGA). No effect was observed in guinea pig intestine mast cells. Glucose-saturated Con A and C. brasiliensis also released histamine from Wistar rat peritoneal mast cells. These results suggest that histamine release induced by lectins is influenced by the heterogeneity of mast cells and depends on extracellular calcium. The results also suggest that this histamine release might occur by alternative mechanisms, because the usual mechanism of lectins is related to their binding properties to metals from which depend the binding to sugars, which would be their sites to bind to immunoglobulins. In the present study, we show that the histamine release by lectins was also induced by demetallized lectins and by sugar-saturated lectins (which would avoid their binding to other sugars). Additionally, the lectins also released histamine from Rowett nude mast cells that are free of immunoglobulins.
