In this work, we describe a sustainable alternative to recover iron from two iron ore tailings (IOT) using hydrogen reduction at relatively low temperatures followed by magnetic separation. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), atomic absorption (AA), Mössbauer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), Raman and thermogravimetry (TG) analyses indicated that the Fe oxide present in the IOTs (sandy tailing (ST) and mud tailings (MT)), can be reduced with H2 at 500 ºC to produce α-Fe. Upon magnetic separation the mud tailing produced a 77 wt.% magnetic fraction increasing the Fe content from 19.2 to ca. 56 wt.% of Fe. On the other hand, the sandy tailing resulted in a 15 wt.% magnetic fraction increasing the Fe content from 19.2 to 70 wt.%. These results indicate that up to 86% of iron can be recovered from the IOT wastes already in the metallic form which can be very interesting for the steel industry.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Increasing cruciferous vegetable intake has been associated with reduced risk of cancer. Experimental and epidemiological studies suggest that the watercress it is a cruciferous vegetable with high concentration of compounds with recognized antitumor activity. Objective: To investigate the effects of daily intake of an aqueous solution of watercress on the growth of the experimental Ehrlich tumor (EET). Methods: Swiss mice were divided into three groups A, B and C (n = 6). The animals from the control group (A) received, by gavage, 0.05 ml of saline throughout the experiment. The animals in group B, from the first day of the experiment, received daily, by gavage, 0.05 ml of watercress aqueous solution (0.5 g/ml). The animals from group C began, on day 21, daily intake of this solution. At day 21.2 × 106 EET cells were inoculated subcutaneously in the left footpad of all mice, and tumor growth was assessed by measuring the thickness of the paw. On day 42, the animals were sacrificed and their footpads removed for histopathological analysis. Results: The animals from groups B and C have showed a suppression of tumor growth and a small area of necrosis compared to the animals of group A. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the daily intake of aqueous solution of watercress was able to activate a suppression of the EET growth, probably due to the main compounds with antitumor properties present in this vegetable.

Background: Gut microbiota may play a role in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Previous studies showed that prebiotics and probiotics might halt the progression of steatohepatitis. Aim: To clarify the potential effect of Synbiotic 2000®Forte (Synb) in preventing or ameliorating diet induced steatohepatitis, particularly in fibrosis progression and how this intervention correlates with gut microbiota composition and endotoxinemia. Methods: Twenty-seven C57BL/6 mice were divided into three groups: chow diet (CD, n = 7); high-fat choline deficient diet (HFCD, n = 10) and HFCD diet supplemented with Synbiotic 2000®Forte (four probiotic strains and four prebiotics mixture) (HFCD + Synb, n = 10). At 6 and 18 weeks, blood samples (lipopolysaccharides assay - LPS), cecal feaces (gut microbiota) and liver tissue (histology) were collected for analysis. Results: Both HCFD diet mice developed steatohepatitis with ballooning at 6 and 18 weeks, opposite to CD. Comparison of histological scores in HFCD and HFCD + Synb, at 6 and 18 weeks showed no significant difference regarding steatosis, inflammation, or ballooning. Evaluating fibrosis with Sirius Red, and degree of smooth-muscle cell activation, HFCD mice had significantly more fibrosis; addition of Synb significantly reduced fibrosis at 6 weeks and 18 weeks. Serum endotoxin levels were similarly increased in HFCD and HFCD + Synb at week 6; however at week 18 HFCD + Synb had significantly lower endotoxin levels than HFCD. Gut microbiota of HFCD vs CD, showed no significant differences regarding the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, either at 6 or 18 weeks; Proteobacteria increased at 6 week (3.3) and 18 week (7.5), while the addition of Synb resulted in a decrease at week 18 (−3.90). Fusobacteria markedly increase at week 18 (10.0), but less so with the addition of Synb (5.2). Conclusion: Synbiotic 2000®Forte is able to modulate the mouse gut microbiota reducing the degree of fibrosis while simultaneously decreasing endotoxemia.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The screening of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry proteins with high potential to control insect pests has been the goal of numerous research groups. In this study, we evaluated six monogenic Bt strains (Bt dendrolimus HD-37, Bt kurstaki HD-1, Bt kurstaki HD-73, Bt thuringiensis 4412, Bt kurstaki NRD-12 and Bt entomocidus 60.5, which codify the cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cry1Ac, cry1Ba, cry1C, cry2A genes respectively) as potential insecticides for the most important insect pests of irrigated rice: Spodoptera frugiperda, Diatraea saccharalis, Oryzophagus oryzae, Oebalus poecilus and Tibraca limbativentris. We also analyzed their compatibility with chemical insecticides (thiamethoxam, labdacyhalothrin, malathion and fipronil), which are extensively used in rice crops. The bioassay results showed that Bt thuringiensis 4412 and Bt entomocidus 60.5 were the most toxic for the lepidopterans, with a 93% and 82% mortality rate for S. frugiperda and D. saccharalis, respectively. For O. oryzae, the Bt kurstaki NRD-12 (64%) and Bt dendrolimus HD-37 (62%) strains were the most toxic. The Bt dendrolimus HD-37 strain also caused high mortality (82%) to O. poecilus, however the strains assessed to T. limbativentris caused a maximum rate of 5%. The assays for the Bt strains interaction with insecticides revealed the compatibility of the six strains with the four insecticides tested. The results from this study showed the high potential of cry1Aa and cry1Ba genes for genetic engineering of rice plants or the strains to biopesticide formulations.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by plasmocyte expansion in the bone marrow and the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin, causing bone destruction, renal failure, hematopoietic suppression and infections. Identification of clinical and laboratory factors in the diagnosis are important to predict survival. The Dürie/Salmon staging system, used for the disease, is based on the correlation of clinical and laboratory parameters on tumoral mass. Studies of the combination of β2 microglobulin and albumin resulted in a simple staging system, known as the International Staging System (ISS), which is currently being used. The objectives of this work were to analyze clinical and laboratory characteristics in the diagnosis of MM patients and a study of survival. A non-competitive cohort study was performed of 101 MM patients attended in the Hematology Service/Hospital das Clínicas-UFMG who were diagnosed in the period of April 1994 to October 2006.A descriptive analysis of the characteristics at diagnosis and a study of survival were made. The descriptive analysis was achieved using the Kaplan-Meier technique and the Log-Rank test utilized for a comparison of survival curves. The Cox regression test was used for multivariate analysis. The average age of the patients was 63 years, 47.5% were men and 52.5% women, with 50.6% being white, 33.3% black and 16.1% mulattos. The most common clinical manifestations were: bone pain (83.2%) and weakness (70.3%). Radiographies of the skeleton showed alterations in 83.8% of the cases. In respect to the Dürie/Salmon staging system, 63 (62.4%) patients were in stage III, 32 (31.7%) in stage II and 6 (5.9%) in stage I. Using the ISS classification, 22 (30.1%) patients were in stage III, 31 (42.5%) in stage II and 20 (27.4%) in stage I. Overall survival was 66.52 months with a follow-up of 20 months. In the univariate analysis, creatinine (p=0.006), hemoglobin (p=0.001), the Dürie/Salmon staging system (p=0.009) and ISS (p=0.014) were significant. In the multivariate analysis only hemoglobin (p=0.012) was correlated to survival. Most of the patients presented in the advanced stage at diagnosis with repercussions on survival.

This paper describes the versatility of N-Acyl-3,3-difluoro-2-oxoindoles, obtained from the the reaction of N-acylisatins with (diethylamino)sulphur trifluoride (DAST) which, on opening of the heterocyclic ring by reactions with nucleophiles, lead to the formation of a variety of products: reaction with water yields 2-(2-amidoacyl)-2,2-difluoroacetic acids, with alcohols yields alkyl 2-(2-amidoacyl)-2,2-difluoroacetates, with amines and glycine yields 2-(2-amidoacyl)-2,2-difluoroacetamides and with thiosemicarbazides yields difluorothiosemicarbazide derivatives. The latter undergo acid-catalysed cyclizations to yield N-(2-((5-aminoaryl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)difluoromethyl)-4-(R)-phenyl)acetamide. The X-ray structure of N-(2-((5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)difluoromethyl)-4-methylphenyl)acetamide has been determined.
