Resumo Este trabalho utilizou 28.643 registros de pesos, do nascimento aos 660 dias de idade, de 6.471 animais da raça Tabapuã para estimar componentes de variância, covariância e parâmetros genéticos, utilizando o modelo de regressão aleatória. Foi utilizado algoritmo de busca AIREML através do método da máxima verossimilhança restrita pelo programa computacional DFREML. Os modelos incluíram: como aleatórios, os efeitos genético aditivo direto, materno, de ambiente permanente de animal e materno; como fixos, os efeitos de grupo de contemporâneos; como covariáveis, a idade do animal à pesagem e a idade da vaca ao parto. As estimativas de variância genética aditiva direta obtidas aumentaram com a idade. As estimativas de herdabilidade para o efeito aditivo direto mostram o decréscimo da herdabilidade do nascimento até a desmama, enquanto as estimativas de herdabilidade materna apresentaram aumento do nascimento até a desmama, decrescendo nas idades seguintes. As correlações genéticas diretas variaram de moderadas a altas, diminuindo suas magnitudes à medida que aumentou a distância entre as idades dos animais. O modelo de regressão aleatória utilizado mostrou-se adequado para descrever as mudanças nas variâncias dos pesos de bovinos da raça Tabapuã do estado da Bahia.

Abstract In this study 28,643 weight records taken from birth to 660 days of age from 6,471 animals of the Tabapuã zebu breed were used to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters using a random regression model. The data were analyzed with the DFREML program applying the Restricted Maximum Likelihood method and using an AIREML algorithm. In the models, direct additive genetic, maternal, and permanent environmental (animal and maternal) effects were assumed to be random, contemporary groups were included as fixed effects, and the ages of animal at weighing and of dam at calving were used as covariables. Estimates of direct additive genetic variance increased with age. Heritability estimates for direct additive effect decreased from birth to weaning, whereas estimates of maternal heritability increased over this period and decreased at older ages. Direct genetic correlations ranged from moderate to high, so their magnitudes decreased with greater age gaps between animals. The random regression model used in this study was appropriate to describe changes in variance estimates for weights in Tabapuã cattle raised in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este trabalho realizar o inventário do ecótipo Gurgueia no Estado do Piauí, na região Nordeste do Brasil. O inventário compreendeu o levantamento histórico, com busca em literaturas, e o populacional feito a partir de visitas in loco nos rebanhos. Foi tomado em cada rebanho a localização geográfica por meio o por GPS e contagem dos animais com padrão fenotípico Gurgueia para classifica-la quanto ao risco de extinção. Observou-se a presença dos caracteres barba, chifres, brincos, os padrões de cor ruão, agouti e chocolate, e a presença de orelha reduzida que foram submetidos à análise descritivas simples. A literatura regional consultada não apresentou consistência sobre a origem do caprino Gurgueia no Piauí, mas indicaram que rebanhos instalados no vale do rio Gurgueia no Sul do Piauí, deram origem aos hoje classificados como Gurgueia. No estudo, houve a confirmação de poucos exemplares, apenas 119, dispersos em três microrregiões revelando que grupo genético Gurgueia está em situação crítica de desaparecimento. Nestes animais, observa-se alta frequência da ausência de brincos e do caráter presença de chifre (0,95). A frequência de barba foi de 0,52 e não houve ocorrência de pelos longos, indicando ausência da relação entre esses caracteres. O caráter ruão (0,96), a pelagem chocolate e padrão não-agouti (cor única) não estiveram presentes assim como a presença de orelha reduzida. O estudo pode apontar também que os caprinos Gurgueia apresentam-se em situação instável, já que a sua presença nos rebanhos está associada a outros tipos raciais.

SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to conduct the inventory of goat breed Gurgueia in the state of Piauí, Northeast region of Brazil. The inventory includes a historical survey - made by searching in the literature - and a population survey - made by gathering in loco information. The geographic location through GPS was taken in farms sheltering Gurgueia goats and then individuals Gurgueia were counted to estimate population size and classifying the risk of extinction. To characterize the Gurgueia breed, the presence of beard, horns, earrings, patterns of color roan, agouti and brown, and the presence of reduced ear were observed to perform simple descriptive analysis. The regional literature demonstrates lack of consistency about the origin of the Gurgueia breed. However, flocks of goats in the Gurgueia river valley, in Southern Piauí, gave origin to the breed denomination. The present study found out 119 Gurgueia individuals scattered in three micro-regions - classifying the Gurgueia breed as critically endangered. The morphological analysis shows low frequency of earrings (0,05) and high frequency of horn (0.95) in Gurgéia individuals. The beard frequency was 0.52 and was verified absence of long hairs, indicating no relationship between those. The analysis showed high frequency of roan pattern (0.96), absence of brown and single coat pattern (non-agouti). Reduced ear was absent. This inventory appointed that Gurgueia risk of endangerment is unstable, since its presence within herds is mixed with other breed types.

O estudo foi conduzido para avaliar a idade ao primeiro parto (IPP) e o intervalo de partos (IDP) em fêmeas da raça Nelore utilizando 23.066 registros de IPP e IDP de fêmeas criadas em regime de pasto nos estados do Maranhão e Piauí no período de 1976 a 2012. As análises foram realizadas utilizando modelo animal uni e bicaracterísticas para IPP e IDP. As médias obtidas e os coeficientes de variação para as características de idade ao primeiro parto foram 1252,77±125 dias (41,76 meses) a 10,56%; intervalo de partos 591,729±149,91 dias (19,72 meses) a 38,74%, respectivamente. Foram estimados parâmetros genéticos em análise unicaracterística, sendo obtidos valores de herdabilidade em torno de 0,026 e 0,006 para IPP e IDP, respectivamente. A estimativa de repetibilidade para as características IDP em análise unicaracterística apresentou-se, de forma geral, com baixa magnitude 0,025. Na mesma ordem, para análise bicaracterística, as herdabilidades foram de 0,03 e 0,06 para IPP e IDP, e o coeficiente de repetibilidade estimado de 0,14, respectivamente. As correlações genéticas entre as características reprodutivas (IPP e IDP) observadas neste trabalho foram iguais a 0,06. O desempenho reprodutivo do rebanho estudado, para as condições de clima tropical, pode ser considerado satisfatório, estando em acordo com os parâmetros encontrados por outros autores em diferentes regiões.

The study was carried out to evaluate the age-at-first-calving and calving interval (IPP and IDP) in Nelore cows, using IPP and IDP data from 23,066 females reared in a grazing regime in the States of Maranhão and Piauí from 1976 to 2012. Data were analyzed statistically using the SAS (Statistical Analysis System) program. The mean and coefficient of variation for the age-at-first-calving was 1252.77 ± 125 days (10.41 months; 10.56%) and, for the calving interval, values were 591.73 ± 149.91 days (12.49 months; 38.74%). Uncharacteristic analyses were used to estimate genetic parameters for heritability values, obtaining values of approximately 0.026 and 0.006 for IPP and IDP, respectively. The repeatability estimate for the IDP characteristic, as calculated by uncharacteristic analysis, had a generally low value of 0.025. Similarly, for trait analysis, heritability values were 0.03 and 0.06 for IPP and IDP, respectively, and the estimated repeatability coefficient was 0.14. The genetic correlations between the reproductive characteristics (IPP and IDP) observed in this study were equal to 0.06. The reproductive performance of the herd studied, in tropical climate conditions, can be considered to be satisfactory, in accordance with the parameters obtained by other authors in different regions.

Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa determinar as faixas de conforto térmico, avaliadas em termos de temperatura e Índices de Temperatura de Globo Negro e Umidade (ITGU), adequadas à criação de codornas de corte na fase final de criação. Foram alojadas 300 codornas de corte, em diferentes ambientes térmicos. Cada grupo de 60 aves foi distribuído, aleatoriamente, em 03 câmaras climáticas, sendo 10 aves por unidade experimental (gaiola), totalizando 15 tratamentos. Os tratamentos foram: CP - Conforto Preconizado (temperaturas de 26 e 25 oC, respectivamente, para quarta e quinta semana de criação); QM - Calor Moderado (30 oC para a quarta e quinta semana de criação) e QS - Calor Severo (33 oC para a quarta e quinta semana de criação). Durante a quarta semana de criação das codornas (22 a 28 dias), o melhor valor de ITGU foi de 75,8 ± 0,9 e para a quinta semana de criação (29 a 35 dias) ITGU de 75,3 ± 0,7 (indicativos de conforto térmico para esta idade). Verificou-se que: codornas mantidas em estresse térmico (seja por frio ou calor) durante a fase inicial de criação não se recuperam ao final do ciclo de vida; mesmo quando criadas em condições de conforto térmico na fase inicial, após este período, quando mantidas em temperaturas de estresse seja por calor moderado ou severo crônicos, não conseguem se manter com a performance normal, demonstrando a necessidade de se garantir que o ambiente térmico dos aviários seja mantido adequado de acordo com as exigências para cada idade das codornas.

The objective of this research was to determine the temperature comfort, evaluated in terms of temperature and indices Black Globe Temperature and Humidity (BGTH), appropriate to the creation of quails in the final phase. Were housed 300 quails in different thermal environments. Each group of 60 birds were distributed randomly into 03 chambers, with 10 birds per pen (cage), totaling 15 treatments. The treatments were: CP - Comfort Pressed (temperatures of 26 and 25 oC, respectively, for fourth and fifth week of creation); MH - Moderate heat (30 ºC for the fourth and fifth week of creation) and HS - Heat Severus (33 oC for the fourth and fifth week of creation). During the fourth week of creation quail (22-28 days), the best value of BGTH was 75.8 ± 0.9 and for the fifth week of creation (29-35 days) BGTH 75.3 ± 0, 7 (indicative of thermal comfort for this age). It was found that: quail maintained in thermal stress (either hot or cold) during the initial phase can not recover the end of the life cycle, even when reared under conditions of thermal comfort in the initial stage after this period, while kept at temperatures of heat stress is moderate or severe chronic, can not keep up with the normal performance, demonstrating the need to ensure that the thermal environment of poultry is kept in accordance with the appropriate requirements for each age of the quail.

Resumen El objetivo de esta investigación fue verificar los efectos del tipo de maternidad sobre el comportamiento de cerdas lactantes, las cuales estuvieron alojadas en jaulas por 28 días durante el invierno, se evaluaron 27 matrices distribuidas en un delineamiento completamente al azar con tres tratamientos (maternidad convencional con resguardos para estar abrigados, maternidad convencional con resguardos para estar abrigados con calentamiento del piso para lechones y maternidad alternativa con acceso a potreros) y nueve repeticiones. Las cerdas fueron filmadas a los 7, 14, 21 y 27 días por 24 horas. Las cerdas mantenidas en jaulas de maternidad con acceso a potreros permanecieron por más tiempo en el comedero, con mayor frecuencia y gastaron más tiempo en el bebedero en relación a las cerdas confinadas en jaulas de maternidad convencional. Las cerdas mantenidas en las jaulas de maternidad convencional permanecieron más tiempo en otras posiciones que las matrices mantenidas en la maternidad con acceso a los potreros. Las cerdas sometidas a las jaulas de maternidad alternativa presentaron mejores parámetros fisiológicos que las cerdas evaluadas en jaulas de maternidad convencional. Se concluye que las jaulas de maternidad alternativa con acceso a potreros y calentamiento del piso para lechones proporcionan mejores condiciones de bienestar cuando son comparadas con las jaulas de maternidad convencional, tanto para las cerdas como para los lechones

Abstract Aiming to evaluate the effects of different housing systems on the behavior of lactating sows during the winter, 27 sows were used in a 28 days trial. The design used was completely randomized, with three treatments (Conventional housing system with piglet; Conventional housing with piglet and with floor heating for piglets, and an alternative housing system with access to an open area) and nine replicates. Each sow had a 24 hours period of recording at days 7, 14, 21 and 27 to evaluate their behavior. Sows kept in the alternative system spent more time at the feeder and drinking water when compared to sows kept in the conventional housing system. Sows kept in conventional housing spent more time in other activities than eating and drinking when compared to the sows in the alternative system. Also, sows in the alternative housing system had better physiological parameters than those of conventional systems. In conclusion, the alternative house system and the conventional one with floor heating for piglets provide increased welfare for sows and for piglets when compared to conventional housing system

Resumo Objetivando-se verificar os efeitos do tipo de maternidade sobre o comportamento de porcas lactantes, alojadas por 28 dias no inverno, foram usadas 27 matrizes distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos (maternidade convencional com abrigo escamoteador; maternidade convencional com abrigo escamoteador e aquecimento do piso para leitões e maternidade alternativa com acesso a piquetes) e nove repetições. As porcas foram filmadas aos 7, 14, 21 e 27 dias por 24 horas. As porcas mantidas em maternidade com acesso a piquetes permaneceram por mais tempo no comedouro e frequentaram e despenderam mais tempo no bebedouro em relação às matrizes mantidas na maternidade convencional. As matrizes mantidas nas maternidades convencionais permaneceram mais tempo em outras posições do que as matrizes mantidas na maternidade com acesso a piquetes. As porcas submetidas à maternidade alternativa apresentaram melhores parâmetros fisiológicos que as da maternidade convencional. Conclui-se que maternidades alternativas com acesso a piquetes e o aquecimento do piso para leitões proporcionam melhores condições de bem-estar, tanto para porcas como para leitões, quando comparadas a maternidades convencionais

The aim of this study was to compare the genetic diversity of 12 populations of goats in Brazil and Morocco (n = 796) through the use of physical measurements and different multivariate techniques. Traits measured included wither height (WH), distance from the brisket to the ground (BH) and ear length (EL). The standardized Euclidean distance (D) was adopted. The D values were submitted to clustering analysis using hierarchical methods (from nearest neighbor and UPGMA - Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) and the numbers of clusters were analyzed using the Tocher optimization method. The population clustering was different depending on the method of analysis used. Among the hierarchical methods, UPGMA showed the best fit (CCC = 0.82). The Tocher method enabled the formation of four different clusters. Although the hierarchical and Tocher methods resulted in different cluster formations, both contributed to the interpretation of the genetic cluster divergence. The results obtained through UPGMA and Tocher optimization enable their use for future studies that may include a larger number of biometric variables on greater numbers of individuals and additional populations.

The aim was to analyze variation in 12 Brazilian and Moroccan goat populations, and, through principal component analysis (PCA), check the importance of body measures and their indices as a means of distinguishing among individuals and populations. The biometric measurements were wither height (WH), brisket height (BH) and ear length (EL). Thorax depth (WH-BH) and the three indices, TD/WH, EL/TD and EL/WH, were also calculated. Of the seven components extracted, the first three principal components were sufficient to explain 99.5% of the total variance of the data. Graphical dispersion by genetic groups revealed that European dairy breeds clustered together. The Moroccan breeds were separated into two groups, one comprising the Drâa and the other the Zagora and Rhâali breeds. Whereas, on the one side, the Anglo-Nubian and undefined breeds were the closest to one another the goats of the Azul were observed to have the highest variation of all the breeds. The Anglo-Nubian and Boer breeds were similar to each other. The Nambi-type goats remained distinct from all the other populations. In general, the use of graphical representation of PCA values allowed to distinguish genetic groups.
