ABSTRACT Remote sensing through band ratio techniques for nutritional monitoring of clonal eucalyptus plantations is essential to guarantee health and productivity, reducing costs of forestry enterprises. The objective was to apply vegetation indices from high resolution satellite images in the nutritional diagnosis of macronutrients in plantations of clonal hybrids of Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake. The study was carried out in 62 areas of six municipalities in the state of Bahia under cultivation of homogeneous eucalyptus plantations, aged between 1.3 and 1.8 years. The design was completely randomized with six treatments constituted by the rainfall regime (1000 to 1300 mm year-1 and 1300 to 1600 mm year-1) and soil types (class and texture). The nutritional diagnosis of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) was performed from leaf analysis and determination of vegetation indices: normalized difference vegetation (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI) and soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI). The evaluated areas have high vigor (NDVI > 0.70) and the highest values were observed in the rainy regions (1300 to 1600 mm year-1) (mean of 0.78). The NDWI index presents the highest correlation for the average levels of Ca and Mg. The NDVI, NDWI and SAVI indexes present a strong correlation with each other (-0.97 to 1.00) and can help in mapping vigor and consequently in eucalyptus productivity.

RESUMO O sensoriamento remoto, por meio das técnicas de razão de bandas para o monitoramento nutricional de plantios clonais de eucalipto, é fundamental para garantir a sanidade, produtividade e reduzir custos de empreendimentos florestais. Objetivou-se aplicar índices de vegetação a partir de imagens de satélite de alta resolução na diagnose nutricional de macronutrientes em plantios de híbridos clonais de Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake. O estudo foi realizado em 62 áreas de seis municípios do estado da Bahia sob cultivo de plantios homogêneos de eucalipto, com idades entre 1,3 e 1,8 anos. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos constituídos pelo regime pluviométrico (1000 a 1300 mm ano-1 e 1300 a 1600 mm ano-1) e tipos de solo (classe e textura). A diagnose nutricional de nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P), potássio (K), cálcio (Ca), magnésio (Mg) e enxofre (S) foi realizada a partir da análise foliar e da determinação dos índices de vegetação: índice de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI), índice de diferença normalizada da água (NDWI) e índice de vegetação ajustado ao solo (SAVI). As áreas avaliadas possuem alto vigor (NDVI > 0,70) e os maiores valores foram observados nas regiões chuvosas (1300 a 1600 mm ano-1) (médio de 0,78). O índice NDWI apresenta maior correlação para os teores médios de Ca e Mg. Os índices NDVI, NDWI e SAVI apresentam forte correlação entre si (-0,97 a 1,00) e podem auxiliar no mapeamento do vigor e consequentemente na produtividade de eucalipto.

Abstract Studies of plant phenology in the Atlantic Forest can be enhanced by a greater understanding of the factors regulating vegetative and reproductive cycles. Dalbergia nigra (Vell.) Allemão ex Benth. is endemic and vulnerable in the Atlantic Forest. We analyzed abiotic aspects and plant traits that modulate the phenologies of D. nigra by monitoring 135 individuals in four subpopulations from different remnant forests for 24 months. The growth and shapes of the plants, as well as environmental variables, were determined. Circular analysis evidenced phenological variations among subpopulations and evaluation periods. Multiple factor analysis evidenced that phenological variations are mainly correlated with precipitation, temperature, and tree height. The combination of environmental conditions and plant characteristics affect synchronicity and phenological intensity. Low fruiting intensity (less than 50%) limits seed production and recruitment. We emphasize the importance of forest remnants and the need to increase D. nigra populations in future reforestation projects.

O planejamento racional de uso dos recursos naturais exige informações a respeito dos solos, as quais são escassas e frequentemente ignoradas pelos gestores ambientais. Assim, objetivou-se realizar o levantamento de solos do Município de Itaara, RS, substituindo a fotointerpretação tradicional pelo uso de cartas topográficas; determinar a aptidão de uso das terras, considerando a legislação ambiental; e estabelecer os conflitos de uso das terras. Utilizando técnicas de geoprocessamento na geração dos planos de informações de solos, declividades, áreas de preservação permanentes, aptidão agrícola e uso atual das terras, foram determinadas as áreas que apresentam conflitos de uso em relação à sua aptidão agrícola e à legislação ambiental. Itaara é constituída, predominantemente, por Neossolos Litólicos (34%), que apresentam baixo potencial agrícola devido a características do solo e do ambiente onde ocorrem. Por meio do geoprocessamento, identificaram-se pelo menos 6,2% da área sendo superutilizada.

The rational planning of use of the natural resources demands information regarding soils, which are scarce and frequently unknown by the environmental managers. In that sense, the aims of this research were to perform the soil survey of the Itaara county, Rio Grande do Sul state, substituting the traditional photointerpretation by the use of topographical maps; to determine the suitability of land use, considering the environmental legislation and to establish the conflicts of land use. Using geoprocessing techniques in the generation information plans of soils, steepness, permanent preservation areas, agricultural suitability and land use, it was possible to determine the areas that show use conflicts in relation to their agricultural suitability and to the environmental legislation. Itaara is constituted, predominantly, by Leptosols (34%), that has low agricultural potential due to its soil characteristics and the environment where they occur. Through geoprocessing tecniques, it was identified that at least 6.2% of the area is overused.

As mudanças ambientais, especialmente na criosfera, podem resultar em amplas consequências globais, sendo o estudo de geleiras das regiões polares estratégicos para analisar áreas sensíveis às mudanças climáticas. Neste trabalho foram analisadas as taxas de mudança da frente da geleira Polar Club e comparadas com a variabilidade interanual da temperatura do ar, na Península Potter, ilha Rei George, a fim de compreender o impacto direto das alterações do clima local na dinâmica das áreas livres de gelo. Foi utilizada uma série de dez cenas de imagens do satélite Landsat e dados de temperatura do ar superficial entre 1986 e 2011. Os resultados evidenciam uma tendência no aumento na temperatura do ar de 0,04 ºC por ano, o que resultou no incremento de 1,03 ºC nas temperaturas médias do ar para o período de 26 anos analisados. A frente da geleira ao longo dos últimos 26 anos apresentou recuo progressivo, resultando em um aumento de 1,63 km² de área livre de gelo na Península Potter. As influências das temperaturas atmosféricas no recuo da geleira demonstraram um atraso de cerca de um ano. Apesar das evidências do aumento das temperaturas médias do ar na região, apenas a série de temperaturas atmosféricas não é suficiente para explicar essa variação observada. Este fenômeno pode estar associado à re-acomodação das tensões da camada de gelo na ilha Rei George, às mudanças nas taxas de precipitação e condições climáticas.

Environmental changes, especially in the cryosphere, can result in large global consequences. Studies of glaciers in the Polar Regions are strategic for analyzing climate change sensitive areas. This work analyzed the glaciers front change rates of the Polar Club and compared with inter-seasonal variability of air temperature at Potter Peninsula, King George Island, in order to understand direct impact of the climate change on the local ice-free areas dynamics. We used a series of ten Landsat satellite imagery scenes and atmospheric temperature data from 1986 to 2011. The results show an increasing trend of 0.04 ºC per year, which resulted in an increment of 1.03 ºC in average temperatures for the 26-year analyzed period. The front of the glacier over the past 26 years showed progressive withdrawal mapped, resulting in an increase of 1.63 km² of ice-free area at Potter Peninsula. The influences of atmospheric temperature at the glacier's retreat demonstrate delay of about one year. Despite the evidence of increased average air temperatures in recent decades in the region, the series of atmospheric temperatures alone is not sufficient to explain the variation observed for the Polar Club glacier front. These phenomena may be associated with re-accommodation of the ice sheet stresses across King George, changes in rainfall rates and climate conditions.

A expansão urbana acelerada tem provocado diversos impactos negativos ao ambiente. A necessidade de novas metodologias que permitam um planejamento mais adequado dos recursos naturais é cada dia mais evidente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um diagnóstico ambiental em áreas urbanas de Santa Maria - RS, determinando-se os conflitos de uso das terras através, do Sistema de Avaliação do Potencial de Uso Urbano das Terras (SAPUT). Foram utilizados produtos e técnicas de sensoriamento remoto e geoprocessamento de imagens. Os problemas de uso indevido das terras identificados estão relacionados com a fragilidade do material geológico e do recurso solo. Até 33% da área vem apresentando utilização acima do seu potencial devido ao seu uso inadequado para construções e agricultura urbana.

The accelerated urban expansion has promoted several negative impacts on the environment. The need of new methodologies that allows a more appropriate planning of the natural resources grows constantly. The objective of this research was to accomplish an environmental diagnostic in urban areas of Santa Maria - RS, Brazil, determining the land use conflicts through the Urban Land Use Potential System. Products and techniques of remote sensing and image geoprocessing were used. Improper land use is related to the fragility of the geological material and soil resources. Up to 33% of the area is used above its potential with inadequate construction and urban agriculture.

A falta de conhecimento da aptidão de uso da terra e do planejamento adequado da sua utilização tem sido fato freqüente ocasionando impactos negativos ao meio ambiente. Neste sentido, os objetivos deste trabalho foram determinar a aptidão de uso, uso atual e os conflitos de uso da terra, visando contribuir para o planejamento racional dos recursos naturais no município de São João do Polêsine (SJP), RS. A análise ambiental foi efetuada através da integração de diferentes planos de informações como solos, relevo, hidrografia, aptidão agrícola, uso das terras e áreas de preservação permanente (APP). SJP apresenta mais de 50% de sua área destinada a atividades agropecuárias, 14,8% do município enquadra-se como APP, sendo a metade dessa área utilizada inadequadamente. Os principais problemas relacionam-se com a utilização inadequada dos seus recursos naturais, sem considerar a legislação ambiental e a aptidão das terras no processo de planejamento.

The lack of knowledge on land use suitability and appropriate planning of its use have been a frequent reality causing negative impacts on the environment. In this way, the objective of this research was to determine land suitability, current land use and conflicts of use, seeking to contribute for the rational planning of the natural resources in the São João do Polêsine (SJP), RS. The environmental analysis was made through the integration of different plans of information as soils, relief, hydrography, agricultural suitability, land use and areas of permanent preservation (APP). SJP presents more than 50% of its area destined to agricultural activities, 14.8% of the SJP are framed as APP, with half of that area being used inadequately. The main problems of the county are related to the inadequate use of natural resources, without considering information regarding to the environmental legislation and land suitability, in the planning process.
