ABSTRACT Since no more than ten years Jeremy Waldron has been working on a legal and philosophical conception of dignity that conceives it mainly as "rank" or "status", and that understands it -not exclusively, but significantly- as the basis of human rights. This approach is proposed as an alternative to the rival conceptions of dignity that are currently found in legal scholarship and in the rulings of high courts, such like the Kantian, the Roman-Catholic and the Dworkinian. This work will try to prove that, despite its great hints, the Waldron's thesis about dignity has at least three relevant problems which arise from the insufficient clarification of what he calls the "underlying idea" of human dignity, which I will classify as: that of "weakness", that of "harmonization-determination", and that of "secularity". The goal will be to show that it is possible to test a conception of Waldron's "underlying idea" of human dignity that, resorting to an Aristotelian notion of human nature and without renouncing to the positive features of Waldron's approach, overcomes successfully the problems mentioned.

RESUMEN Desde hace poco más de diez años Jeremy Waldron viene trabajando en una concepción filosófico-jurídica de la dignidad que la concibe principalmente como "rango" o "estatus", y la entiende -no exclusiva, pero sí significativamente- como fundamento de los derechos humanos. Dicho enfoque se plantea como una vía alternativa a las concepciones rivales de la dignidad que se encuentran hoy disponibles en la literatura científica y en la jurisprudencia de las altas cortes, como la kantiana, la católica-romana y la dworkiniana. A través de esta investigación se intentará demostrar que, no obstante tener notables aciertos, la tesis waldroniana acerca de la dignidad tiene al menos tres problemas importantes vinculados al insuficiente esclarecimiento de su "idea subyacente", a los que llamaré aquí sintéticamente: el de la "debilidad", el de la "armonización-determinación" y el de la "secularidad". El objetivo será evidenciar que es posible ensayar una concepción de la idea subyacente a la dignidad como rango o estatus que, referida a una naturaleza humana de raigambre aristotélica y sin renunciar a los aspectos positivos del enfoque waldroniano, salga mejor librada de las dificultades señaladas.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar las concepciones de los estudiantes sobre la naturaleza representacional de las imágenes en biología. Las concepciones sobre la relación entre la representación y el referente pueden categorizarse como realista o constructivista. Para tal fin, 171 estudiantes de 12 a 16 años, con y sin instrucción específica en biología, respondieron cuestionarios de escala Likert, con preguntas abiertas y de opción múltiple. En general, los estudiantes mostraron una concepción realista sobre la imagen de una célula. La primacía de los aspectos perceptivos de las imágenes puede explicar estos resultados, así como las dificultades que tienen los estudiantes en su aprendizaje y la necesidad de su instrucción explícita.

The study analyzes students' conceptions of the representational nature attributed to images in biology. The conceptions regarding the relationship between representation and referent can be categorized into realism and constructivism. 171 students aged 12, 14, and 16 participated in the study. Some had had specific instruction in biology and some had not. Several instruments, such as Likert scale questionnaires, and multiple choice and open-ended questions were used to measure the conceptions. Students show realistic conception about the nature of a cell microphotography. The primacy of perceptive aspects in visual representations may explain these results, the difficulties students have in learning them, and the need of their explicit instruction.

Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as concepções dos estudantes sobre a natureza representacional das imagens em biologia. As concepções sobre a relação entre a representação e o referente podem categorizar-se como realistas ou construtivas. Para isso, 171 estudantes de 12 a 16 anos, com e sem instrução específica em biologia, responderam a questionários de escala Likert, com perguntas abertas e de múltipla escolha. Em geral, os estudantes mostraram uma concepção realista sobre a imagem de uma célula. A primazia dos aspectos perceptivos das imagens pode explicar esses resultados, assim como as dificuldades que os estudantes têm em sua aprendizagem e na necessidade de sua instrução explícita.

This study analyzes the natural conceptions of the visual representations of the human body that guide selection, design, and didactic treatment in the new elementary science textbooks (3rd grade to 6th grade) of Mexico's Integral Reform of Basic Education. Two types of conceptions are described: an intuitive conception, which assumes simplicity and facility in the use of images, along with a realistic representation; and a more complex conception of a constructivist nature that considers images to be an external system of representation with the difficulties their use demands. The results show that the underlying conception of the images of the human body from the 3rd to the 6th grades corresponds to an intuitive type with few changes, with respect to textbooks prior to the Reform.

En este trabajo analizamos las concepciones sobre la naturaleza de las representaciones visuales sobre el cuerpo humano que dirigen su selección, diseño y tratamiento didáctico en los nuevos libros de primaria de ciencias naturales (3° a 6° grados) de la Reforma Integral de la Educación Básica en México. Se describen dos tipos de concepciones: una intuitiva, que asume una simplicidad y facilidad en el uso de las imágenes junto con una naturaleza realista de las mismas, y una más compleja, de naturaleza constructivista, en la que se consideran las imágenes como un sistema externo de representación con las dificultades que demanda su uso. Los resultados muestran que la concepción que subyace a las imágenes sobre el cuerpo humano de 3° a 6° grados corresponde a una de tipo intuitivo con pocos cambios respecto de su tratamiento en los libros de texto anteriores a la Reforma.
