Abstract In the modern world, cancer is a growing cause of mortality, but archeological studies have shown that it is not exclusive to modern populations. The aim of this study is to examine the epidemiologic, social, and clinicopathologic features of head and neck cancers in ancient populations. To do this, we extracted all records that described malignant lesions in the head and neck region available in the Cancer Research in Ancient Bodies Database (CRAB). The estimated age, sex, physical condition of the remains (skeletonized, mummified), anatomic location of tumors, geographic location, chronology, tumor type, and methods of tumor diagnosis were collected. One hundred and sixty-seven cases were found, mostly originating from Europe (51.5%). Most records were of adults between 35 and 49 years of age (37.7%). The most involved site was the skullcap (60.4%), and the most common malignancies were metastases to the bone (65.3%) and multiple myeloma (17.4%). No primary soft tissue malignancies were registered. The results of our study indicate that head and neck cancers were present in ancient civilizations, at least since 500,000 BCE. The available data can help to improve the current understanding of the global distribution of head and neck cancer and its multidimensional impacts on populations in the contemporary world.

Durante la preparación del tratamiento del género Celtis para la región neotropical, se constató que algunos nombres descritos para Argentina, Bolivia y Paraguay necesitan ser tipificados. En este contexto, se designan lectotipos para seis nombres (Celtis tala fo. obtusata, Celtis tala fo. subtomentosa, Celtis tala fo. subpilosa , Celtis tala fo. velutina, Celtis williamsii y Momisia flexuosa) y se llevan a cabo lectotipificaciones de segundo paso para dos nombres (Momisia chichape y Momisia crenata).

Abstract Background Atherosclerosis risk factors can have different impacts on cardiovascular diseases and on the anatomical distribution of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Objectives To study the influence of atherosclerosis risk factors on the anatomical distribution of PAD in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Methods We performed an observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study that included 476 hospitalized patients with CLTI due to PAD. We compared the presence of atherosclerosis risk factors (age, gender, diabetes mellitus, smoking, and hypertension) in patients with PAD involving three different anatomic areas (aortoiliac, femoropopliteal, and infrapopliteal). Multivariate analysis was performed to identify associations between atherosclerosis risk factors and PAD distribution. Results The mean age of the 476 patients was 69 years, 249 (52%) were men, and 273 (57%) had diabetes. Seventy-four percent (353) had minor tissue loss. Multivariate analysis identified three risk factors associated with PAD anatomical distribution (gender, smoking, and DM). Women had a 2.7 (CI: 1.75-4.26) times greater chance of having femoropopliteal disease. Smokers had a 3.6-fold (CI: 1.54-8.30) greater risk of aortoiliac disease. Diabetic patients were 1.8 (CI: 1.04-3.19) times more likely to have isolated infrapopliteal occlusive disease. Conclusions The study showed that gender, DM, and smoking impact on the anatomical distribution of PAD in patients with CLTI. Diabetic patients were more likely to have only infrapopliteal disease, women had a greater risk of femoropopliteal PAD, and smokers had a greater risk of aortoiliac occlusive disease.

Resumo Contexto Os fatores de risco para aterosclerose podem ter influência distinta nas doenças cardiovasculares, impactando também no território da doença arterial periférica (DAP). Objetivos Estudar a influência dos diferentes fatores de risco para a aterosclerose na distribuição anatômica da DAP em pacientes com isquemia crítica crônica de membros (ICCM). Métodos Foi realizado um estudo observacional, transversal e analítico, incluindo 476 doentes internados devido à ICCM por DAP. Foram estudados, comparativamente, os pacientes com DAP dos três distintos territórios anatômicos (aortoilíaco, femoropoplíteo e infragenicular) em relação à presença dos fatores de risco para a aterosclerose (idade, gênero, diabetes mellitus, tabagismo e hipertensão arterial). A análise multivariada foi realizada para testar a associação entre os fatores de risco e a distribuição anatômica da DAP. Resultados A média de idade dos pacientes foi de 69 anos, 249 (52%) eram homens, e 273 (57%), diabéticos. Predominaram os pacientes na Categoria 5 da Classificação de Rutherford (353/74%). Na análise multivariada, as mulheres tiveram chance 2,7 (IC: 1,75-4,26) vezes maior de doença do território femoropoplíteo. Os doentes tabagistas tiveram 3,6 (IC: 1,54-8,30) vezes maior risco de doença do território aortoilíaco. Diabéticos apresentaram 1,8 (IC: 1,04-3,19) vezes maior chance de obstrução apenas do território infragenicular. Conclusões O estudo mostrou que gênero, diabetes mellitus e tabagismo influenciam no padrão de distribuição da DAP em pacientes com ICCM. Os doentes diabéticos apresentaram maior chance de doença isolada do território infragenicular, as mulheres tiveram maior risco de DAP do território femoropoplíteo e os tabagistas possuem maior chance comprometimento aortoilíaco.

Abstract Objective To assess whether bleaching gel volume influences chromatic changes, hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the pulp tissue. Methodology A total of 60 bovine teeth were divided into four groups, according to bleaching gel volume (n=15): without gel (WG); V30 (30 µL of 35% HP); V60 (60 µL); and V120 (120 μL). HP diffusion analysis was performed in the first session (T1). Chromatic changes (ΔE, ΔE00, and WID) were assessed after the first (T1), second (T2), third (T3) sessions, and 15 d (T4) after the end of treatment. Moreover, 20 rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) and their upper first molars were treated with different gel volumes: control (no treatment); V2 (2 μL of 17.5% HP); V4 (4 μL); and V8 (8 μL). After 24 h, rats were euthanized and the specimens processed for histological and immunohistochemical (nitric oxide synthase) evaluation. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05). Results In vitro (bovine teeth), chromatic changes were not influenced by bleaching gel volume, showing similar values in all groups and sessions, except for the control group (p<0.05). The V120 group had the highest HP diffusion values (p<0.05). In vivo (pulp tissue), the V4 and V8 groups showed the highest inflammatory infiltrate in the pulp and significant oxidative stress (p<0.05). Conclusion The adverse effects on the dental pulp related to HP diffusion, pulp inflammation, and oxidative stress depend on bleaching gel volume, while the bleaching effect is not proportional to the volume used.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to build and validate a simulated scenario and checklist to assess skills in the care of hemodynamically unstable patients with evolution to Cardiorespiratory Arrest, and to test applicability to the target population, assessing skills and satisfaction/self-confidence with learning. Method: methodological study carried out in three stages (development of the scenario and checklist, validation by judges and pilot test) between April 2020 and September 2021, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fourteen judges and 24 nursing students participated. Results: the scenario and checklist achieved a Content Validity Coefficient greater than 90. The skills were adequately developed, with a mean of 4.71 ± 0.24 on the satisfaction-self-confidence scale, and 4.83 ± 0.25 for simulation design. Conclusion: The scenario may contribute to improving educational activities in undergraduate and health education and subsidize future studies to increase the quality of care and assistance to hemodynamically unstable patients with evolution to cardiac arrest.

RESUMEN Objetivos: construir y validar un escenario simulado y una lista de verificación para evaluar las habilidades en la atención de pacientes hemodinámicamente inestables con evolución a Parada Cardiorrespiratoria; y probar la aplicabilidad a la población objetivo, evaluando las habilidades y la satisfacción/autoconfianza con el aprendizaje. Método: estudio metodológico realizado en tres etapas (desarrollo del escenario y lista de verificación, validación por jueces y prueba piloto) entre abril de 2020 y septiembre de 2021, en el estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Participaron 14 jueces y 24 estudiantes de enfermería. Resultados: el escenario y la lista de verificación alcanzaron un Coeficiente de Validez de Contenido superior a 90. Las habilidades se desarrollaron adecuadamente, con una media de 4,71 ± 0,24 en la escala de satisfacción-autoconfianza, y de 4,83 ± 0,25 para el diseño de la simulación. Conclusión: el escenario puede contribuir a: mejorar las actividades educativas de pregrado y formación sanitaria; y subvencionar futuros estudios para aumentar la calidad de la atención y asistencia a pacientes hemodinámicamente inestables con evolución a parada cardiaca.

Abstract This publication is an update of the “Consensus on the therapeutic management of atopic dermatitis - Brazilian Society of Dermatology” published in 2019, considering the novel, targeted-oriented systemic therapies for atopic dermatitis. The initial recommendations of the current consensus for systemic treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis were based on a recent review of scientific published data and a consensus was reached after voting. The Brazilian Society of Dermatology invited 31 experts from all regions of Brazil and 2 international experts on atopic dermatitis who fully contributed to the process. The methods included an e-Delphi study to avoid bias, a literature search and a final consensus meeting. The authors added novel approved drugs in Brazil and the indication for phototherapy and systemic therapy for AD. The therapeutical response to systemic treatment is hereby reported in a suitable form for clinical practice and is also part of this updated manuscript.

Abstract Background Some studies show an association between the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (ApoEε4) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), and other studies, an association between ApoEε4 and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), but there are no data in the literature on the interaction between EDS, cognitive function, and ApoEε4 in patients with OSA. Objective To examine the cognitive function of adults with and without EDS and with and without ApoEε4. Methods A total of 21 male and female patients aged between 33 and 79 years, underwent a clinical interview, ApoE genotyping, neuropsychological evaluation, polysomnography, and the application of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Results Excessive daytime sleepiness was associated with lower intelligence quotient (IQ; total performance) and worse immediate visual memory, regardless of the ApoE genotype. Patients carrying the ApoEε3/ε4 genotype had a worse performance in divided attention, constructional praxis, perceptual organization, and cognitive flexibility. A combination of the ε4 allele and EDS potentiates the negative effect on cognition, except for immediate visual memory. In this case, patients had a worse performance in terms of processing speed, selective attention, and visuomotor coordination. Conclusions Excessive daytime sleepiness and the ApoEε3/ε4 genotype are associated with worse cognitive performance in OSA patients. The combination of EDS and ε4 allele potentiates cognitive impairment.

Resumo Antecedentes Alguns estudos mostram uma associação entre o alelo ε4 da apolipoproteina E (ApoEε4) e a síndrome da apneia obstrutiva do sono (SAOS), e outros, entre ApoEε4 e a sonolência excessiva diurna (SED), mas não há dados na literatura sobre a interação entre SED, função cognitiva e ApoEε4 em pacientes com SAOS. Objetivo Avaliar a função cognitiva em adultos com SAOS com e sem SED e com e sem ApoEε4. Métodos Ao todo, 21 pacientes, de 33 a 79 anos, homens e mulheres, foram avaliados clinicamente, e submetidos a genotipagem ApoE, avaliação neuropsicológica, polissonografia, e aplicação da Escala de Sonolência de Epworth. Resultados A SED esteve associada com menor quociente de inteligência (QI; desempenho geral) e pior memória visual imediata, independentemente do genótipo ApoE. Pacientes com genótipo ApoEε3/ε4 apresentaram pior desempenho na atenção dividida, praxe construcional, organização perceptiva e flexibilidade cognitiva. A combinação do alelo ε4 com a SED potencializa esse efeito deletério na cognição, exceto na memória visual imediata. Nesse caso, os pacientes tiveram uma menor velocidade de processamento cognitivo, e piores atenção seletiva e coordenação visiomotora. Conclusões A SED e o genótipo ApoEε3/ε4 estão associados a um pior desempenho cognitivo em pacientes com SAOS. A combinação de SED e do alelo ε4 potencializa esse efeito.

Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre as atitudes, os comportamentos de saúde e o uso de tabaco e álcool num grupo de estudantes de enfermagem. Materiais e método: Estudo exploratório, descritivo e transversal realizado com 182 estudantes de graduação em enfermagem em São Paulo, Brasil. Foram aplicados os seguintes instrumentos: Formulário de Informação Sociodemográfica, Teste de Identificação de Transtornos Derivados do Consumo de Álcool-e (AUDIT-C), Teste de Fagerstrom para a Dependência de Nicotina (FTND), Questionário sobre Atitudes e Condutas de Saúde (CACS) e Questionário de Saúde do Paciente-2 (PHQ-2). Resultados: Mais da metade dos estudantes mostraram comportamentos de saúde apropriados e atitudes positivas. Aproximadamente 50 % dos participantes tinham consumido bebidas alcoólicas no último mês. Também foi observado o uso experimental de drogas ilícitas e tabaco. Além disso, os estudantes que relataram o consumo excessivo de álcool apresentaram um déficit no autocuidado. Conclusões: A precariedade nas atitudes e comportamentos de saúde identificados neste estudo foi associada com diversos padrões de uso de substâncias psicoativas. Os resultados indicam a necessidade de intervenções destinadas a promover o bem-estar e um estilo de vida saudável no contexto universitário.

Resumen Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación entre las actitudes, los comportamientos de salud y el uso de tabaco y alcohol entre un grupo de estudiantes de enfermería. Materiales y método: Estudio exploratorio, descriptivo y transversal realizado con 182 estudiantes de pregrado en enfermería en São Paulo, Brasil. Se aplicaron los siguientes instrumentos: Formulario de Información Sociodemográfica, Prueba de Identificación de Trastornos Derivados del Consumo de Alcohol - C (AUDIT-C), Test de Fagerstrom para Adicción a la Nicotina (FTND), Cuestionario sobre Actitudes y Conductas de Salud (CACS) y Cuestionario de Salud del Paciente - 2 (PHQ-2). Resultados: Más de la mitad de los estudiantes mostraron comportamientos de salud apropiados y actitudes positivas. Aproximadamente 50 % de los participantes había consumido bebidas alcohólicas en el último mes. También se observó el uso experimental de drogas ilícitas y tabaco. Además, los estudiantes que reportaron el consumo excesivo de alcohol presentaron un déficit en el autocuidado. Conclusiones: La precariedad en las actitudes y los comportamientos de salud identificados en este estudio fue asociada con diversos patrones de uso de sustancias psicoactivas. Los resultados señalan la necesidad de intervenciones destinadas a promover el bienestar y un estilo de vida saludable en el ámbito universitario.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the association between attitudes, health behaviors, and the use of tobacco and alcohol among nursing students. Materials and method: Exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted with 182 undergraduate nursing students in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. Sociodemographic Information Form, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - C (AUDIT-C), Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), Attitudes and Health Behaviors Questionnaire (AHBQ), and Patient Health Questionnaire - 2 (PHQ-2) were applied. Results: More than half of the students showed appropriate health behaviors and positive attitudes. Approximately 50% of the participants had consumed alcoholic beverages in the last month. Experimental use of illicit drugs and smoking were also observed. In addition, students who reported excessive alcohol use presented a deficit in self-care. Conclusions: The precariousness in health attitudes and behaviors identified in this study was associated with various patterns of psychoactive substance use. Thus, the results indicate the need for interventions aimed at promoting well-being and a healthy lifestyle in the university environment.

nbsp;The present research makes comparisons of the performances of Brazilian Universities in terms of academic and industry related production, based in the “U-Multirank”, in the years 2017 to 2020. These comparisons are made with other Latin American countries listed in this ranking. Academic production is measured by indicators related to the number of papers published and citations received by Brazilian Universities, while Industry related products performance is based in the number of patents obtained and citations that Brazilian publications received in patents. This analysis is made for the average performances of all Brazilian universities listed in the “U-Multirank”, which is an academic multidimensional ranking implemented in Europe in 2014. It is based in five Dimensions, which are composed by 35 Indicators, with some of them related to pure academic productions and some others related to researches that are applied to industry. The results show that the performances of Brazilian universities are better in terms of academic products and below average in industry related products, such as the number of patents. It is also noted improvements in those numbers, a tendency that needs to be verified in the future. In Latin America, Chile has the best performances in all the Indicators related to Industrial products.

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the influence of photobiomodulation with infrared laser (IRL) in the rat pulp tissue after bleaching, considering the immunolabeling of interleukin (IL)-23 and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α. Methodology: The right and left molars of forty rats were divided into groups: Control – with placebo gel and Bleached – with 35% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Half of the rats received one IRL application on both sides, establishing a split-mouth design, which resulted in 4 groups with 20 hemi-maxillae each: Control, Bleach, IRL, and Bleached-IRL. Rats (n=10) from each group were euthanized, at 2- and 30-days mark, and the pulp tissue was evaluated using inflammation and immunolabeling scores. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney statistical tests were performed (p<0.05). Results: At the 2-days mark, the Bleached group had severe inflammation and necrosis in the occlusal thirds of the pulp, and moderate to severe inflammation in cervical third, whereas the Bleached-IRL had mild to moderate inflammation (p<0.05). At the 30-days mark, there was no inflammation, but tertiary dentine formation in the bleached groups. Regarding IL-23, severe immunolabeling was observed in the Bleached group (p<0.05) at the 2-days mark; at the 30-days mark, there was a reduction in immunolabeling, in which the Bleached group had moderate and the Bleached-IRL group had mild immunolabeling (p>0.05). HIF-1α was more evident at the 2-days mark in the Bleached group, without significant difference with the Bleached-IRL (p>0.05). The difference was observed between the bleached and control groups, without immunolabeling (p<0.05); at the 30-days mark, the Bleached group had reduction in HIF-1α immunolabeling, while the Bleached-IRL had an increase; the difference remained between the bleached and the controls groups (p<0.05) Conclusion: Photobiomodulation using IRL minimized the inflammation and IL-23 immunolabeling in the pulp tissue of rats after dental bleaching, but did not influence significantly the HIF-1α immunolabeling.

Abstract Background: Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS) associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been described since mid-April 2020 with the first reports coming from Europe. Our objective was to describe the characteristics of patients among the Brazilian population. Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted with the participation of five pediatric rheumatology centers in Brazil during the period from March to November 2020. Children and adolescents with PIMS temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (TS) who met the definition criteria for the disease according to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health were included. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, therapeutic characteristics and molecular and serological diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection were described. Results: Fifty-seven children and adolescents with PIMS-TS were evaluated, 54% female, with a median age of 8 (3–11) years. Most (86%) were previously healthy, with asthma being the main comorbidity, present in 10% of the patients. Fever was the main manifestation, present in all patients, followed by mucocutaneous and gastrointestinal features, present in 89% and 81% of the patients, respectively. Myocarditis occurred in 21% of the patients and in 68% of them required intensive care. The Kawasaki disease phenotype occurred in most patients (77%). All patients had elevated inflammatory markers, with elevated CRP being the most found (98%). Anemia and lymphopenia were present in 79% and 72%, respectively. Laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV-2 was found in 77% of the patients, with 39% positive RT-PCR and 84% positive serology for SARS-CoV-2. An immunomodulatory treatment was performed in 91% of the patients, with 67% receiving intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) associated with glucocorticoid, 21% receiving IVIG, and 3.5% receiving glucocorticoid. The median length of hospitalization was 10 days. Conclusions: This study showed a high morbidity of PIMS-TS in Brazilian children, with a prolonged length of hospitalization and a high rate of admission to pediatric intensive care unit. Multicenter prospective studies are needed to assess the morbidity of the disease in the medium and long term.

Resumo Existem no Brasil mais de 2 mil instituições de ensino superior que abrigam cerca de 8 milhões de estudantes, dos quais parte significativa se envolvem com atividades além da sala de aula, entre elas, o esporte, por meio das associações acadêmicas atléticas (AAA). Essas associações tendem a proporcionar uma série de benefícios, dentre eles, aumentar o vínculo do aluno com a instituição contribuindo para sua permanência na mesma. Sendo assim, torna-se salutar entender mais sobre essas instituições, por isso, o objetivo principal desta pesquisa foi analisar os antecedentes e consequentes da identificação dos discentes com as atléticas universitárias; já o objetivo secundário foi discutir como a identificação dos estudantes com a atlética pode contribuir para o engajamento estudantil junto à instituição de ensino. A estrutura teórica que suporta as hipóteses estabelecidas abordou a teoria da identificação, as atléticas nas instituições de ensino superior (IES), antecedentes e consequentes da identificação dos alunos com as atléticas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, com amostra de 506 membros de atléticas de diversas IES do Brasil. O modelo proposto foi testado via modelagem de equações estruturais, os resultados identificaram que, entre os construtos considerados, apenas conexão com a marca da atlética é antecedente da identificação com essa associação, sendo responsável por 72,4 por cento da variância da identificação. Os resultados apontaram que os demais oito construtos são consequentes da identificação com a atlética. Ademais, foi possível depreender que a identificação dos estudantes com a atlética pode contribuir para o engajamento estudantil junto à instituição de ensino.

Abstract There are more than 2 thousand higher education institutions (HEIs) in Brazil, housing around 8 million students, of which a significant portion are involved in extracurricular activities – such as sports through Academic Athletic Associations (AAAs). These associations tend to offer a series of benefits, including a strengthening of students’ ties with the institution, contributing to their permanence in it. Considering the importance of understanding more about athletic associations, the main goal of this research was to analyze the antecedent and consequent variables of students’ identification with them, and the secondary goal was to discuss how students’ identification with athletic associations may contribute to student engagement with the HEI. The theoretical framework supporting the hypotheses proposed included identification theory, the athletic associations inside HEIs, and antecedent and consequent variables of student identification with AAAs. This is a descriptive study with a sample of 506 AAA members in several HEIs in Brazil. The model proposed was tested via Structural Equation Modeling. The findings showed that, among the constructs taken into consideration, only connection with the AAA brand was an antecedent variable of identification with the association, accounting for 72.4% of the variance in identification. The findings showed that the remaining eight constructs are consequent variables of identification with AAAs. In addition, it was possible to infer that students’ identification with AAAs may contribute to student engagement with the educational institution.

CO2 REDUCTION TO HYDROCARBONS AND OXYGENATES: FUNDAMENTALS, STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES. The development of renewable energy sources (e.g., solar and wind) moves foward, the tendance for replacing fossil fuels increases. However, these technologies have as primary barriers to industrial processes’ efficiency and especially storage. Thus, CO2 reduction routes using these energy sources could chemically store part of the energy as fuels or chemicals, offering alternatives to current oil and gas industry. This process is inspired by photosynthesis, e.g., photochemical or electrochemical processes, using homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Nevertheless, this reaction is thermodynamically unfavorable and has very slow kinetics, given the high stability of the CO2 molecule and the complexity of the redox reactions involved. Therefore, this review addresses this process’s kinetic and thermodynamic challenges, and the fundamental concepts of the photo(electro)chemical processes for CO2 reduction, besides presenting and discussing the materials with the potential to act as catalysts. The main reaction mechanisms and advances in the understanding of such processes are discussed, as well as future perspectives
