ABSTRACT Purpose: To determine the relationship of ocular surface disease, the number of glaucoma medications prescribed and its influence on treatment adherence. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, demographic data of patients with glaucoma were collected, and patients completed the ocular surface disease index questionnaire and the glaucoma treatment compliance assessment tool. Ocular surface parameters were assessed by “Keratograph 5M.” Patients were stratified into two groups according to the amount of prescribed ocular hypotensive eye drops (Group 1, one or two classes of medications; Group 2, three or four classes) Results: In total, 27 eyes of 27 patients with glaucoma were included: 17 using 1 or 2 topical medications (Group 1) and 10 eyes using 3 or 4 classes (Group 2). For the Keratograph assessment, patients using ≥3 medications had significantly smaller tear meniscus height (0.27 ± 0.10 vs. 0.43 ± 0.22; p=0.037). The analysis of Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire showed higher scores among the groups using more hypotensive eye drops (18.67 ± 13.53 vs. 38.82 ± 19.72; p=0.004). Regarding the glaucoma treatment compliance assessment tool, Group 2 had worse scores in components of forgetfulness (p=0.027) and barriers due to lack of drops (p=0.031). Conclusion: Patients with glaucoma using more hypotensive eye drops had worse tear meniscus height and ocular surface disease index scores than those using fewer topical medications. Patients using three or four drug classes had worse predictors of glaucoma adherence. Despite worse ocular surface disease results, no significant difference in self-reported side effects was found.

RESUMO Objetivo: Determinar a relação entre doença da superfície ocular (OSD), número de medicamentos prescritos para o glaucoma, e como isso influencia na adesão ao tratamento. Métodos: Neste estudo transversal, pacientes com glaucoma foram submetidos à coleta de dados demográficos, preenchimento do questionário Ocular Surface Disease Index e do Glaucoma Treatment Compliance Assessment Tool. Os parâmetros da superfície ocular foram avaliados pelo “Keratograph 5M”. Indivíduos foram estratificados em 2 grupos de acordo com a quantidade de colírios hipotensores oculares prescritos (Grupo 1: uma ou duas classes de medicamentos; Grupo 2: três ou quatro classes). Resultados: No total, 27 olhos de 27 pacientes com glaucoma foram incluídos: 17 usando 1 ou 2 medicamentos tópicos (Grupo 1) e 10 olhos usando 3 ou 4 classes (Grupo 2). Na avaliação do Keratograph, os pacientes em uso de 3 ou mais medicamentos apresentaram altura do menisco lacrimal significativamente menor (0,27 ± 0,10 vs. 0,43 ± 0,22; p=0,037). Análise do questionário OSDI mostrou escores mais altos entre o grupo que usou mais colírios hipotensores (18,67 ± 13,53 vs. 38,82 ± 19,72; p=0,004). Em relação ao Glaucoma Treatment Compliance Assessment Tool, o Grupo 2 apresentou piores escores nos componentes de esquecimento (p=0,027) e barreiras por falta de colírios (p=0,031). Conclusão: O estudo demonstrou que pacientes com glaucoma usando mais colírios hipotensivos apresentaram piores escores de altura do menisco lacrimal e Ocular Surface Disease Index, em comparação com aqueles que usaram menos medicamentos tópicos. Pacientes em uso de 3 ou 4 classes de colírios tiveram piores preditores de adesão ao glaucoma. Apesar dos piores resultados de doença da superfície ocular, não houve diferença significativa nos efeitos colaterais relatados.

Abstract Lipolytic substance injections to reduce localized fat have been extensively used because it is a low-invasive method. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of deoxycholic acid in submental fat reduction compared to a placebo and investigate the potential industry sponsorship bias in the results of randomized clinical trials on this topic. Ten electronic databases were extensively searched for randomized clinical trials without restriction on language and year of publication. Two reviewers extracted the data and assessed the individual risk of bias in the studies with the RoB 2.0 tool. The industry sponsorship bias was evaluated according to citations in the articles regarding industry funding/sponsorship throughout the texts. Fixed and random effects meta-analyses were performed, and the results were reported in Risk Ratio (RR) at a 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI). The initial search provided 5756 results, of which only five were included. Only two studies had a low risk of bias. All studies showed a potential industry bias. The meta-analysis showed that patients treated with deoxycholic acid had significant positive results for all efficacy outcomes and a higher risk of fibrosis, pain, erythema, numbness, swelling, edema, pruritus, nodules, headache, and paresthesia. The low to moderate certainty of evidence found allows concluding that deoxycholic acid is effective in submental fat reduction, causing well-tolerated adverse effects. However, all eligible studies showed a potential industry bias.

Resumo Há uma enorme disparidade entre os países de alta renda e outros em termos de acesso a dispositivos médicos cardíacos, como marca-passos e desfibriladores implantáveis. Os custos são uma das principais barreiras ao uso de dispositivos cardíacos nesses países. Abstract There is a gap between high-income countries and others in terms of access to medical cardiac devices, such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Costs are one of the main barriers to the use of cardiac devices in these countries. There are international initiatives that aim to reduce the gap. The reuse of pacemakers has been discussed as a possible alternative to this problem. The concept of reusing pacemakers is not new; however, recent studies have proven to be safe, ethical, and effective for those who need cardiac implantable electronic devices and cannot afford them. ABSTRACT Treatment with antiviral drugs for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection causes a rapid reduction in plasma viral load. Viral decline occurs in several stages and provides information on important kinetic constants of virus replication in vivo and pharmacodynamic properties. We present a mathematical model that not only considers the intracellular phase of the viral life cycle, defined as the time between the infection of a cell and the production of new viral particles, but we also consider that this parameter together with the virus decay are interactive fuzzy numbers.

Resumo Objetivo: Descrever as características clínicas de crianças e adolescentes internados em unidade de terapia intensiva com COVID-19 confirmada. Método: Estudo prospectivo, multicêntrico, observacional, em 19 unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica. Foram incluídos pacientes entre um mês e 19 anos, admitidos consecutivamente (março a maio de 2020). As características demográficas, clínico-epidemiológicas, o tratamento e os resultados foram coletados. Os subgrupos foram comparados de acordo com as comorbidades, idade < 1 ano e necessidade de ventilação mecânica invasiva. Um modelo de regressão logística multivariável foi utilizado para preditores de gravidade. Resultados: Setenta e nove pacientes foram incluídos (10 com síndrome inflamatória multi-ssistêmica). Mediana de idade, quatro anos; 54% eram do sexo masculino (síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica, 80%); 41% tinham comorbidades (síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica, 20%). Febre (76%), tosse (51%) e taquipneia (50%) foram comuns nos dois grupos. Sintomas graves egastrointestinais e marcadores inflamatórios mais elevados foram mais frequentes na presença de síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica. Infiltrados intersticiais pulmonares foram comuns em ambos os grupos, mas o derrame pleural foi mais prevalente no grupo com síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica (43% vs. 14%). A ventilação mecânica invasiva foi utilizada em 18% (mediana 7,5 dias); antibióticos, oseltamivir e corticosteroides foram utilizados em 76%, 43% e 23%, respectivamente, mas não a hidroxicloroquina. A mediana do tempo de permanência na unidade de terapia intensiva pediátrica foi de 5 dias; duas mortes ocorreram (3%) no grupo não- síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica. Os pacientes com comorbidades eram mais velhos, e as comorbidades foram independentemente associadas à necessidade de ventilação mecânica invasiva(OR 5,5; IC95%, 1,43-21,12; P 0,01). Conclusões: Nas unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica brasileiras, a COVID-19 apresentou baixa mortalidade, a idade inferior a um ano não foi associada a um pior prognóstico, os pacientes com síndrome inflamatória multissistêmica apresentaram sintomas mais graves, biomarcadores inflamatórios mais elevados e uma grande predominância no sexo masculino, mas apenas a presença de comorbidades e doenças crônicas foi um preditor independente de gravidade.

Abstract Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents admitted to intensive care with confirmed COVID-19. Method: Prospective, multicenter, observational study, in 19 pediatric intensive care units. Patients aged 1 month to 19 years admitted consecutively (March-May 2020) were included. Demographic, clinical-epidemiological features, treatment, and outcomes were collected. Subgroups were compared according to comorbidities, age < 1 year, and need for invasive mechanical ventilation. A multivariable logistic regression model was used for predictors of severity. Results: Seventy-nine patients were included (ten with multisystemic inflammatory syndrome). Median age 4 years; 54% male (multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, 80%); 41% had comorbidities (multisystemic inflammatory syndrome, 20%). Fever (76%), cough (51%), and tachypnea (50%) were common in both groups. Severe symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and higher inflammatory markers were more frequent in multisystemic inflammatory syndrome. Interstitial lung infiltrates were common in both groups, but pleural effusion was more prevalent in the multisystemic inflammatory syndrome group (43% vs. 14%). Invasive mechanical ventilation was used in 18% (median 7.5 days); antibiotics, oseltamivir, and corticosteroids were used in 76%, 43%, and 23%, respectively, but not hydroxychloroquine. The median pediatric intensive care unit length-of-stay was five days; there were two deaths (3%) in the non- multisystemic inflammatory syndrome group. Patients with comorbidities were older and comorbidities were independently associated with the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (OR 5.5; 95% CI, 1.43-21.12; p = 0.01). Conclusions: In Brazilian pediatric intensive care units, COVID-19 had low mortality, age less than 1 year was not associated with a worse prognosis, and patients with multisystemic inflammatory syndrome had more severe symptoms, higher inflammatory biomarkers, and a greater predominance of males, but only comorbidities and chronic diseases were independent predictors of severity.

Strenuous exercise triggers deleterious effects on the intestinal epithelium, but their mechanisms are still uncertain. Here, we investigated whether a prolonged training and an additional exhaustive training protocol alter intestinal permeability and the putative effect of alanyl-glutamine (AG) pretreatment in this condition. Rats were allocated into 5 different groups: 1) sedentary; 2 and 3) trained (50 min per day, 5 days per week for 12 weeks) with or without 6 weeks oral (1.5 g/kg) AG supplementation; 4 and 5) trained and subjected to an additional exhaustive test protocol with or without oral AG supplementation. Venous blood samples were collected to determine gasometrical indices at the end of the 12-week protocol or after exhaustive test. Lactate and glucose levels were determined before, during, and after the exhaustive test. Ileum tissue collected after all experimental procedures was used for gene expression analysis of Zonula occludens 1 (ZO-1), occludin, claudin-2, and oligopeptide transporter 1 (PepT-1). Intestinal permeability was assessed by urinary lactulose/mannitol test collected after the 12-week protocol or the exhaustive test. The exhaustive test decreased pH and base excess and increased pCO2. Training sessions delayed exhaustion time and reduced the changes in blood glucose and lactate levels. Trained rats exhibited upregulation of PEPT-1, ZO-1, and occludin mRNA, which were partially protected by AG. Exhaustive exercise induced intestinal paracellular leakage associated with the upregulation of claudin-2, a phenomenon protected by AG treatment. Thus, AG partially prevented intestinal training adaptations but also blocked paracellular leakage during exhaustive exercise involving claudin-2 and occludin gene expression.

The transport of myo-inositol is the main mechanism for the maintenance of its high intracellular levels. We aimed to measure the mRNA and protein levels of myo-inositol cotransporters in the sciatic nerve (SN) and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) during experimental diabetes. Streptozotocin-induced (STZ; 4, 8, and 12 weeks; 65 mg/kg; ip) diabetic rats (DB) and age-matched euglycemic (E) rats were used for the analysis of mRNA and protein levels of sodium myo-inositol cotransporters 1, 2 (SMIT1, SMIT2) or H+/myo-inositol cotransporter (HMIT). There was a significant reduction in the mRNA levels for SMIT1 in the SN and DRG (by 36.9 and 31.0%) in the 4-week DB (DB4) group compared to the E group. SMIT2 was not expressed in SN. The mRNA level for SMIT2 was up-regulated only in the DRG in the DB4 group. On the other hand, the protein level of SMIT1 decreased by 42.5, 41.3, and 44.8% in the SN after 4, 8, and 12 weeks of diabetes, respectively. In addition, there was a decrease of 64.3 and 58.0% of HMIT in membrane and cytosolic fractions, respectively, in the SN of the DB4 group. In the DRG, there was an increase of 230 and 86.3% for SMIT1 and HMIT, respectively, in the DB12 group. The levels of the main inositol transporters, SMIT1 and HMIT, were greatly reduced in the SN but not in the DRG. SMIT-1 was selectively reduced in the sciatic nerve during experimental STZ-induced diabetes.

RESUMO Objetivo: Traduzir e adaptar transculturalmente para o português do Brasil o instrumento Pediatric Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit para detecção de delirium em unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica, incluindo algoritmo e instruções. Métodos: Utilizou-se a abordagem universalista para tradução e adaptação transcultural de instrumentos de aferição em saúde. Um grupo de especialistas em terapia intensiva pediátrica avaliou as equivalências conceitual e de itens. Em seguida, a avaliação da equivalência semântica consistiu de tradução do inglês para o português por dois tradutores independentes; conciliação em uma única versão; retradução por um nativo de língua inglesa; e consenso de seis especialistas quanto à compreensão de linguagem e de conteúdo, por meio de respostas do tipo Likert e Índice de Validade de Conteúdo. Finalmente, avaliou-se a equivalência operacional, aplicando-se um pré-teste em 30 pacientes. Resultados: A retradução foi aprovada pelos autores originais. As medianas das respostas do consenso variaram de boa a excelente, exceto na característica "início agudo" das instruções. Itens com Índice de Validade de Conteúdo baixo, relativos às características "início agudo" e "pensamento desorganizado", foram adaptados. No pré-teste, a expressão "acene com a cabeça" foi modificada para "balance a cabeça", para melhor compreensão. Não houve necessidade de outros ajustes, resultando na versão final para o português do Brasil. Conclusão: A versão brasileira do Pediatric Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit foi obtida segundo as recomendações internacionais, podendo ser utilizada no Brasil para o diagnóstico de delirium em crianças graves com 5 anos de idade ou mais, sem atraso de desenvolvimento cognitivo.

ABSTRACT Objective: To undertake the translation and cross-cultural adaption into Brazilian Portuguese of the Pediatric Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit for the detection of delirium in pediatric intensive care units, including the algorithm and instructions. Methods: A universalist approach for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of health measurement instruments was used. A group of pediatric critical care specialists assessed conceptual and item equivalences. Semantic equivalence was evaluated by means of a translation from English to Portuguese by two independent translators; reconciliation into a single version; back-translation by a native English speaker; and consensus among six experts with respect to language and content understanding by means of Likert scale responses and the Content Validity Index. Finally, operational equivalence was assessed by applying a pre-test to 30 patients. Results: The back-translation was approved by the original authors. The medians of the expert consensus responses varied between good and excellent, except for the feature "acute onset" of the instructions. Items with a low Content Validity Index for the features "acute onset" and "disorganized thinking" were adapted. In the pre-test, the expression "signal with your head" was modified into "nod your head" for better understanding. No further adjustments were necessary, resulting in the final version for Brazilian Portuguese. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Pediatric Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit was generated in agreement with the international recommendations and can be used in Brazil for the diagnosis of delirium in critically ill children 5 years of age or above and with no developmental cognitive disabilities.

RESUMO Introdução: O papilomavírus humano (HPV) está intimamente associado ao câncer cervical, e a presença de coinfecções, como por Chlamydia trachomatis, Gardnerella vaginalis e Trichomonas vaginalis, pode potencializar ou facilitar a infecção por HPV. As mulheres profissionais do sexo são consideradas vulneráveis à aquisição dessas infecções devido à exposição aos fatores de risco. Objetivo: Determinar a infecção por HPV, os tipos virais e as coinfecções em amostras autocoletadas de mulheres profissionais do sexo. Métodos: Amostras autocoletadas de mulheres profissionais do sexo, do canal vaginal e da cérvice uterina, foram submetidas a detecção do HPV-ácido desoxirribonucleico (DNA), genotipagem viral por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) tipo específica e restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) e detecção de coinfecção. Resultados: O HPV-DNA foi detectado em 19,4% das amostras, sendo os tipos HPV 31, 6 e 53 os mais frequentes. Houve predominância de HPV de alto risco (HR-HPV) e elevada presença de infecções múltiplas (84,6%). A presença de coinfecções foi observada tanto para HPV e C. trachomatis quanto para HPV e G. vaginalis. Observou-se também que mulheres profissionais do sexo que não fazem uso de preservativos e aquelas que não realizam o exame citológico rotineiramente estão predispostas à aquisição da infecção causada pelo HPV. Conclusão: Os resultados obtidos ressaltam a importância de estudos mais abrangentes entre as populações vulneráveis, objetivando estabelecer medidas para a conscientização sobre os riscos de aquisição das infecções sexualmente transmitidas, bem como auxiliar estudos futuros para introdução de vacinas contra o HPV com maior cobertura de tipos virais.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is intimately associated with cervical cancer, and the presence of coinfections, such as with Chlamydia trachomatis, Gardnerella vaginalis and Trichomonas vaginalis, may potentiate or facilitate HPV infection. Female sex workers are considered vulnerable to the acquisition of these infections due to exposure to risk factors. Objective: To determine HPV infection, viral types and coinfections in self-collected samples from female sex workers. Methods: Self-collected samples from female sex workers, of vaginal canal and uterine cervix, were subjected to HPV-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) detection, viral genotyping by type-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and the detection of coinfection. Results: HPV-DNA was detected in 19.4% of the samples, and HPV 31, 6, and 53 were the most frequently detected types. There was a predominance of high-risk oncogenic HPV (HR-HPV) and a strong presence of simultaneous infections with multiple HPV types (84.6%). Coinfections with both HPV and C. trachomatis, and HPV and G. vaginalis were detected. The variables that were statistically associated with HPV infection and the presence of multiple infections were non-use of condoms and non-compliance with regular cervical cytology screening. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of more comprehensive studies among vulnerable populations, aiming to establish measures to raise awareness about the risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections, as well as to support future studies for introducing HPV vaccines with wider coverage of viral types.

Epithelial cell migration is an essential response to enteric pathogens such as enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). This study aimed to investigate the effects of EPEC infection on intestinal epithelial cell migration in vitro, as well as the involvement of type III secretion system (T3SS) and Rho GTPases. Crypt intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) were infected with EPEC strains (E2348/69, ΔescF, and the LDI001 strain isolated from a malnourished Brazilian child) and commensal E. coli HS. Wound migration and cell death assays were performed at different time-points. Transcription and expression of Rho GTPases were evaluated using real-time PCR and western blotting. Overall, EPEC E2348/69 reduced migration and increased apoptosis and necrosis levels compared to EPEC LDI001 and E. coli HS strains. Moreover, EPEC LDI001 impaired cell migration at a higher level than E. coli HS and increased necrosis after 24 hours compared to the control group. The different profiles of virulence genes between the two wild-type EPEC strains, characterized by the absence of espL and nleE genes in the LDI001, might explain the phenotypic results, playing significant roles on cell migration impairment and cell death-related events. Moreover, the type III secretion system is determinant for the inhibition of intestinal epithelial cell migration by EPEC 2348/69, as its deletion prevented the effect. Active Rac1 concentrations were increased in E2348/69 and LDI001-infected cells, while the T3SS-deficient strain did not demonstrate this activation. This study contributes with valuable insight to characterize the mechanisms involved in the impairment of intestinal cell migration induced by EPEC.

Undernutrition represents a major public health challenge for middle- and low-income countries. This study aimed to evaluate whether a multideficient Northeast Brazil regional basic diet (RBD) induces acute morphological and functional changes in the ileum of mice. Swiss mice (∼25 g) were allocated into two groups: i) control mice were fed a standard diet and II) undernourished mice were fed the RBD. After 7 days, mice were killed and the ileum collected for evaluation of electrophysiological parameters (Ussing chambers), transcription (RT-qPCR) and protein expression (western blotting) of intestinal transporters and tight junctions. Body weight gain was significantly decreased in the undernourished group, which also showed decreased crypt depth but no alterations in villus height. Electrophysiology measurements showed a reduced basal short circuit current (Isc) in the undernourished group, with no differences in transepithelial resistance. Specific substrate-evoked Isc related to affinity and efficacy (glutamine and alanyl-glutamine) were not different between groups, except for the maximum Isc (efficacy) induced by glucose. Transcription of Sglt1 and Pept1 was significantly higher in the undernourished group, while SN-2 transcription was decreased. No changes were found in transcription of CAT-1 and CFTR, while claudin-2 and occludin transcriptions were significantly increased in the undernourished group. Despite mRNA changes, SGLT-1, PEPT-1, claudin-2 and occludin protein expression showed no difference between groups. These results demonstrate early effects of the RBD on mice, which include reduced body weight and crypt depth in the absence of significant alterations to villus morphology, intestinal transporters and tight junction expression.

Resumo Analisamos a influência do pulso de inundação na biologia reprodutiva dos auchenipterídeos Tocantisia piresi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1920) e Auchenipterus nuchalis (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) no médio rio Xingu, no Estado do Pará, Brasil. Os indivíduos analisados foram coligidos por meio de capturas trimestrais entre os meses de abril de 2012 a janeiro de 2014 contemplando os quatro períodos hidrológicos (cheia, vazante, seca e enchente). A proporção sexual, o tamanho de primeira maturidade sexual, o índice gonadossomático e o fator de condição foram analisados para as duas espécies, e avaliados em função dos diferentes períodos hidrológicos. Foram coletados 897 espécimes de T. piresi, sendo 467 fêmeas e 430 machos, e 383 A. nuchalis, sendo 286 fêmeas e 97 machos. Para T. piresi a proporção sexual variou apenas nos períodos de enchente e vazante, enquanto que para A. nuchalis a proporção variou entre todos os períodos hidrológicos, com uma proporção maior de fêmeas do que machos. Em relação ao tamanho mínimo da primeira maturação sexual, as fêmeas de T. piresi maturam com tamanho inferior aos dos machos, enquanto que o inverso foi registrado para A. nuchalis. Para T. piresi a maior atividade reprodutiva foi registrada nos períodos de seca e enchente, enquanto que para A. nuchalis a maior atividade foi registrada na enchente e cheia. Machos e fêmeas de T. piresi não diferiram entre os padrões de crescimento, ambos apresentaram crescimento alométrico positivo. Já para A. nuchalis, o padrão de crescimento diferiu entre os sexos, embora ambos tenham apresentado crescimento alométrico negativo. Para as fêmeas de ambas as espécies foram observadas um maior fator de condição no período da vazante. Assim, nossos resultados evidenciam que o pulso de inundação pode influenciar de maneiras distintas os parâmetros reprodutivos destas duas espécies de auchenipterideos, pois a desolva de A. nuchalis parece acontecer no período de cheia e de T. piresi para a época de seca do Médio Rio Xingu.

Abstract This study investigates the influence of the flood pulse on the reproductive biology of the auchenipterids Tocantisia piresi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1920) and Auchenipterus nuchalis (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) from the middle Xingu River in the Brazilian state of Pará. The specimens were collected every three months between April, 2012, and January, 2014, covering four distinct periods (flood, ebb, dry, and filling). The sex ratio, size at first maturity, gonadosomatic index, and condition factor were analysed in the two species, and evaluated in the context of the different hydrological periods. A total of 897 specimens of T. piresi were collected, of which 467 were female, and 430 males, and 383 A. nuchalis (286 females and 97 males). In T. piresi, the sex ratio was biased only in the filling and ebb periods, whereas in A. nuchalis, it departed significantly from the expected ratio of 1:1 in all periods, with a predominance of females. The female T. piresi mature at a smaller size than the males, with the opposite of the pattern being recorded in A. nuchalis. In T. piresi, the breeding peak was observed during the low water periods, whereas in A. nuchalis, the peak was recorded in the flood periods. Male and female T. piresi presented similar positively allometric growth rates, whereas in A. nuchalis, growth was negatively allometric, but rates were different between genders. A higher condition factor was recorded in the females of both species during the ebb period. Overall, the results of this study reveals distinct flood pulse effects on the reproductive parameters of the two auchenipterid species studied; for A. nuchalis the spawning seems to happen at the flood period and for T. piresi at the dry season of the middle Xingu River.

Neste artigo, avaliou-se a eficiência de quatro sistemas alagados construídos (SACs) no tratamento de esgoto sanitário após ser submetido a tratamento preliminar e, no caso de alguns SACs, a tratamento primário (tanque séptico). Os SACs foram cultivados com lírio-amarelo (Hemerocallis flava), tendo a brita #0 como meio suporte, e submetidos às taxas de carregamento orgânico (TCO) de esgoto sanitário, em termos de DBO (kg ha-1 d-1), de 44; 98; 230 e 395 kg ha-1 d-1 e tempos de detenção hidráulica (TDH) de 3,9; 2,0; 1,0 e 0,75 dias, respectivamente. Para avaliar a eficiência dos sistemas, foram realizadas, no afluente e no efluente aos SACs, análises de DBO, DQO, SST, N-total, P-total, K e Na durante 6 meses de funcionamento do sistema. Nos SACs, houve predominância do ambiente anóxico/aeróbio, com remoção de SST, DBO e DQO, suficiente para atender aos padrões de lançamento de efluentes estabelecidos na legislação ambiental do Estado de Minas Gerais.

In this paper, it was evaluated the efficiency of four constructed wetlands (CWs) in the treatment of sewage after being subjected to preliminary treatment, and for some SACs, primary treatment (septic tank). In CWs planted with yellow lily (Hemerocallis flava), since the gravel #0 as the support medium, and submitted to organic loading rates (OLR) of sewage, in terms of BOD (kg ha-1 d-1): 44, 98, 230 and 395 kg ha-1 d-1 and hydraulic detention times (HDT) of 3.9, 2.0, 1.0 and 0.75 days, respectively. To evaluate the efficiency of systems, analysis of BOD, COD, TSS, total-N, total-P, K and Na were performed in the influent and effluent to the SACs for 6 months of operation of the system. In all the CWs there was predominance of the anoxic/aerobic environment, and high efficiencies in the removal of TSS, BOD and COD were obtained, meeting the effluent discharge standards set by the environmental legislation of the Minas Gerais State.

Esse trabalho avaliou os efeitos in vitro de Steinernema glaseri sobre a biologia de ninfas ingurgitadas de Amblyomma cajennense. Os carrapatos foram expostos a juvenis infectantes (JI) de S. glaseri sob diferentes concentrações. Cada tratamento foi composto de 10 unidades experimentais (EU = repetições) em placas de Petri mantidas sob 27 ± 1º C e UR > 80 ± 10% por 72 horas. Em seguida, as ninfas foram transferidas para placas de Petri isentas de nematoides para observação dos seguintes parâmetros: período de pré-ecdise (PPE), período de ecdise (PE), período de muda (PM), porcentagem de ecdise (%Ec) e porcentagem de mortalidade (%Mt). Os grupos tratados com 5.000 e 10.000 JI/UE mostraram alterações significativas no PPE quando comparados com o controle, enquanto para o PE somente o tratamento com 10.000 JI/UE produziu mudanças significativas quando comparado com o controle. Não houve diferença significativa do PM em relação ao grupo controle em nenhum dos tratamentos e, para a %Ec, somente o grupo tratado com 10.000 JI/UE diferiu significativamente do controle. A maior eficiência foi obtida com a concentração de 10.000 JI/EU na qual a mortalidade foi de 13%. Isso demonstra que o nematoide utilizado não foi capaz de causar alta mortalidade em ninfas ingurgitadas de A. cajennese e concorda com outros relatos indicando que carrapatos imaturos não são altamente susceptíveis a nematoides entomopatogênicos.

This work evaluated the in vitro effects of Steinernema glaseri on the biology of engorged Amblyomma cajennense nymphs. The ticks were exposed to infective juveniles (IJs) of S. glaseri at different concentrations. Each treatment was composed by 10 experimental units (EU = repetitions) in Petri dishes maintained at 27 ± 1º C and relative humidity (RH) > 80 ± 10% for 72 hours. Then the nymphs were transferred to Petri dishes free of nematodes for observation of the following parameters: pre-ecdysis period (PEP), ecdysis period (EP), molting period (MP), ecdysis percentage (%Ec) and mortality percentage (%Mt). The groups treated with 5,000 and 10,000 IJs/EU showed significant alterations in the PEP when compared to the control, while for the EP only the treatment with 10,000 IJs/EU produced any significant changes compared to the control. The MP did not differ significantly from the control in any of the treated groups. For the %Ec only the group treated with 10,000 IJs/EU differed significantly from the control. The greatest efficiency was obtained at the concentration of 10,000 IJs/EU, in which the mortality percentage was 13%. This demonstrates that the nematode utilized was not able to cause high mortality in engorged A. cajennense nymphs and agrees with other reports indicating that immature ticks are not highly susceptible to entomopathogenic nematodes.
