ABSTRACT: The soybean looper (SBL), Chrysodeixis includens (Walker, [1858]) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a soybean and cotton pest in South America countries. Field-evolved resistance of SBL to inhibitors of chitin biosynthesis has been reported in Brazil; however, this mode of action is still widely used against SBL. On this basis, we conducted laboratory bioassays to investigate if adjuvants (Nimbus®, TA 35®, Break-Thru® S 240, and Rizospray Extremo®) added to the teflubenzuron spray increase the mortality of SBL strains (resistant, heterozygous, and susceptible to chitin biosynthesis inhibitors). Using chromatography analysis, we also evaluated the amount of teflubenzuron on soybean leaves when applied alone or in combination with adjuvants. In laboratory bioassays, the biological activity of teflubenzuron increased against the susceptible SBL strain when adjuvants were added. In contrast, no relevant effects of adjuvants added to the teflubenzuron spray against heterozygous and resistant SBL larvae were detected. In leaf bioassays, even leaves from the upper third part of the plants containing a significantly higher amount of teflubenzuron (3.4 mg/kg vs 1.7 and 0.6 mg/kg); the mortality of SBL strains was similar when teflubenzuron was applied alone or in mixture with adjuvants. Our findings indicated that adjuvants added to teflubenzuron spray do not provide a substantial increase in the mortality of SBL strains resistant to chitin biosynthesis inhibitors. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the use of this mode-of-action insecticide against SBL and to give preference to other insecticides or control tactic.

RESUMO: A lagarta falsa-medideira, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker, [1858]) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), é uma praga da soja e do algodão nos países da América do Sul. A resistência de C. includens a inibidores da biossíntese de quitina tem sido relatada no Brasil. Entretanto, esse modo de ação ainda é amplamente utilizado para controle de C. includens. Com base nisso, conduzimos bioensaios em laboratório para investigar se adjuvantes (Nimbus®, TA 35®, Break-Thru® S 240 e Rizospray Extremo®) adicionados à calda inseticida de teflubenzuron aumentam a mortalidade de linhagens de C. includens (resistentes, heterozigotos e suscetíveis a inibidores da biossíntese de quitina). Usando análise cromatográfica, também avaliamos a quantidade de teflubenzuron em folhas de soja quando aplicado isolado ou em combinação com adjuvantes. Em bioensaios de laboratório, a atividade biológica do teflubenzuron aumentou para a linhagem suscetível quando os adjuvantes foram adicionados à calda inseticida. Em contraste, nenhum efeito relevante de adjuvantes adicionados ao teflubenzuron foi detectado para os heterozigotos e resistentes. Em bioensaios de folhas, mesmo naquelas do terço superior das plantas, as quais apresentaram uma maior deposição de teflubenzuron (3,4 mg/kg vs 1,7 e 0,6 mg/kg); a mortalidade das linhagens de C. includens foi semelhante quando o teflubenzuron foi aplicado isolado ou com adjuvantes. Nossos resultados indicam que os adjuvantes adicionados ao teflubenzuron não fornecem um aumento substancial na mortalidade de linhagens de C. includens resistentes aos inibidores da biossíntese de quitina. Portanto, é necessário reduzir o uso desse modo de ação para o manejo de C. includens e dar preferência a outros inseticidas ou tática de controle.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar os resultados estéticos e funcionais da reabilitação bucal com implante cone morse e prótese provisória unitária imediatamente após exodontia. Métodos: Estudo clínico longitudinal retrospectivo de 57 pacientes submetidos a um protocolo de reabilitação bucal com implantes osseointegráveis cone morse (Ankylos® Classic.), sem incisão, sem enxertos e sem sutura, seguida de instalação de prótese provisória unitária imediatamente após exodontia em região estética maxilar. Os dados clínicos pré e pós-operatórios (contorno alveolar vestibular, contorno gengival cervical e papilas) e radiográficos pós-operatórios (relação nível ósseo/ implante) foram submetidos a estatística descritiva (média e desvio-padrão) e ao Teste Exato de Fisher. Resultados: A taxa de permanência dos implantes foi de 98,25%. O contorno alveolar vestibular foi mantido em 69,6% dos casos. Não houve retração do contorno cervical gengival e as papilas foram preservadas em 89,3% dos casos. O osso se manteve acima do espelho do implante em 92,8% dos casos. Não houve associação significativa entre diâmetro do implante e retração gengival (p=0,910) ou retração da papila gengival (p=0,148) ou ainda reabsorção da crista óssea alveolar (p=0,610). Conclusão: Este protocolo caracteriza-se por técnicas minimamente traumáticas, reduz o tempo da reabilitação e oferece bons resultados estéticos e funcionais. ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze aesthetic and functional outcomes of the rehabilitation of single tooth morse taper implant restoration with single crown prosthesis immediately after tooth extraction. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal clinical study of 57 patients submitted to an oral rehabilitation protocol with morse taper (Ankylos® Classic) dental implants, without performing incision, grafts nor suture, followed by the placement of a provisional prosthesis immediately after tooth removal in the anterior maxillary region. The pre-and post-operative clinical data (alveolar bone contour at vestibular aspect, soft tissue contour at cervical aspect and papillae level) and postoperative radiographic findings (bone height / implant ratio) were submitted to descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Fisher’s Exact Test. Results: the implant success rate was 98.25%. The alveolar bone vestibular aspect was maintained in 69.6% of the cases. There was no soft tissue retraction on the cervical aspect and the papillae height was preserved in 89.3% of the cases.The bone level remained above the implant neck in 92.8% of the cases. There was no significant association between implant diameter and soft tissue retraction (p = 0.910) or retraction of the interproximal papilla (p = 0.148) or resorption of the alveolar bone crest (p = 0.610). Conclusion: This protocol is characterized by the application of minimally traumatic techniques, reducing rehabilitation time and offering positive aesthetic and functional results.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a relação entre a DP e SCA e verificar a associação entre a DP e periodontite em pacientes com SCA. MÉTODOS: Foram incluídos 58 pacientes com diagnóstico de SCA e 57 controles, sem história de doença arterial coronariana (DAC). Variáveis: hipertensão arterial, diabete, dislipidemia, obesidade, história de DAC, tabagismo e polimorfismo genético do gene da interleucina-1beta. RESULTADOS: Fizeram parte do estudo 115 indivíduos. No grupo SCA, 58 pacientes foram avaliados, sendo 32 (55,2%) do sexo masculino e 26 (44,8%) do sexo feminino. No grupo controle, 57 indivíduos, sendo 32 (56,1%) do sexo masculino e 25 (43,9%) do sexo feminino. Verificou-se DP em 26 (44,8%) pacientes com SCA e em 15 (26,6%) pacientes do grupo controle (beta2 = 4,43, p = 0,04). Análise pela regressão logística, para a associação entre DP e SCA, demonstrou RC de 1,8 (IC 95%: 1,0-5,0); p = 0,24. A associação de periodontite com SCA apresentou RC: 4,5 (IC 95%: 1,3-15,6); p = 0,019. CONCLUSÃO: Não observamos associação independente entre a DP e SCA. Houve associação independente entre periodontite e SCA.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between PD and ACS and the association of PD and periodontitis in ACS patients. METHODS: Fifty-eight ACS patients and 57 controls with no history of coronary artery disease (CAD) were included in the study. Variables: arterial hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, history of CAD, cigarette smoking, and interleukin-1beta gene polymorphism. RESULTS: One hundred and fifteen subjects were enrolled in the study. In the ACS group, 58 patients were evaluated, 32 of whom (55.2%) were male and 26 (44.8%), female. In the control group, 57 subjects were evaluated, 32 (56.1%) of whom were male and 25 (43.9%), female. Periodontal disease was diagnosed in 26 (44.8%) ACS patients and 15 (26.6%) control patients (beta2 = 4.43, p = 0.04). In a logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio for association between PD and ACS was 1.8 (95% CI: 1.0-5.0); p = 0.24. The odds ratio for association of periodontitis with ACS was 4.5 (95% CI: 1.3-15.6); p = 0.019. CONCLUSION: No independent association was found between PD and ACS. There was an independent association between periodontitis and ACS.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar os modos de morte e fatores associados à limitação de suporte de vida em três unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica do sul do Brasil. MÉTODO: Estudo transversal e retrospectivo em que foram revisados todos os óbitos ocorridos em 2002 em três unidades de terapia intensiva pediátrica de referência de Porto Alegre por uma equipe de pesquisadores treinados para esse fim. Foram avaliadas as características gerais, o modo de morte (ressuscitação cardiopulmonar, morte encefálica, ordem de não reanimar, não oferta e retirada de suporte vital - esses três últimos agrupados em limitação de suporte de vida), o tempo de internação - hospitalar e na unidade de terapia intensiva pediátrica -, o plano de final de vida e a participação da família nessa decisão. Para as comparações, foram utilizados o teste t de Student, Mann Whitney, qui-quadrado, odds ratio e análise multivariada. RESULTADOS: Aproximadamente 53,3% dos óbitos receberam ressuscitação cardiopulmonar. A incidência de limitação de suporte de vida foi de 36,1%, havendo diferença significativa (p = 0,014) entre os hospitais (25 versus 54,3 e 45,5%). A forma de limitação de suporte de vida mais freqüente foi "ordem de não reanimar" (70%). Observou-se associação entre limitação de suporte de vida com presença de doença crônica (odds ratio = 8,2; IC95% = 3,2-21,3) e tempo de internação na unidade de terapia intensiva pediátrica > 24h (odds ratio = 4,4; IC95% = 1,6-11,8). A participação da família e dos comitês de ética no plano de final de vida foi inferior a 10%. CONCLUSÕES: A ressuscitação cardiopulmonar ainda é oferecida em uma freqüência maior do que a descrita nos países do hemisfério norte, enquanto que a limitação de suporte vital é realizada preferentemente através da ordem de não reanimar. Esses achados e a pequena participação da família refletem dificuldades em relação às decisões de final de vida enfrentadas por intensivistas do sul do Brasil.

OBJECTIVES: To describe causes of death and factors involved in the decision-making process related to life support limitation at three university-affiliated pediatric intensive care units in the south of Brazil. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, based on a review of the medical records of all deaths occurring during 2002 at three pediatric intensive care units in Porto Alegre. Three previously trained pediatric fellows from each service performed the study. Data were assessed relating to general case characteristics, causes of death (failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, brain death, do-not-resuscitate orders, withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment - the last three modes were classified as the life support limitation group), length of stay in hospital, end-of-life plans and the participation of patients' families and Ethics Committees. The Student t test, Mann Whitney, chi-square, odds ratio and multivariate analyses were used for comparisons. RESULTS: Close to 53.3% of fatal cases had received full cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The incidence of life support limitation was 36%, with statistical differences (p = 0.014) between the three hospitals (25 versus 54.3 and 45.5%, respectively). The most frequent form of life support limitation was a do-not-resuscitate order (70%). Life support limitation was associated with the presence of chronic disease (odds ratio = 8.2; 95%CI 3.2-21.3) and length stay in the pediatric intensive care unit (odds ratio = 4.4; 95%CI 1.6-11.8). The rate of involvement of families and Ethics Committees in the decision-making process was lesser than 10%. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is offered more frequently than is observed in northern countries. In contrast, life support limitation is offered through do-not-resuscitate orders. These findings and the low participation of the families in the decision-making process reflect the difficulties to be overcome by those professionals who are responsible for handling critically ill children in southern Brazil.
