Pheromones are essential for colony organization in honeybees. The pheromones 9-ODA ((E)-9-oxodec-2-enoic acid) and 9-HDA ((E)-9-hydroxydec-2-enoic acid), produced by the mandibular gland of the queen, have various functions within the colony, including inhibition of ovarian development of workers, attraction of swarms, and stabilization of the cluster group. An example of reaction of the colony to adverse conditions is absconding, which is defined as mass exit of all of the adult individuals, leaving even brood and food. In this study, the pheromones 9-ODA and 9-HDA were determined in virgin and normal mated, egg-laying European Carniolan and Africanized queens, as well as in mated queens that were in absconding colonies, using liquid chromatography with UV detection developed methodology. Absconding was induced by maintaining free-flying five-standard-Langstroth-frame colonies in a chamber artificially heated to 45 ºC. The obtained results showed that the amount of 9-ODA in Africanized queens (6.56 µg bee-1) is very low compared with European queens. However, large amounts of 9-HDA were found in the queens of absconding Africanized swarms (107.4 µg bee-1). According to our results, the quantities of 9-ODA and 9-HDA in Africanized honeybees in Brazil may be contributing to the high rates of absconding, promoting low effect of stabilizing agent, and high effect of attraction of dispersers cluster.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons. There is substantial evidence that the endocannabinoid system modulates the dopaminergic activity in the basal ganglia, a forebrain system that integrates cortical information to coordinate motor activity regulating signals. In this article, a fused-silica capillary with a molecularly imprinted polymer was developed for in-tube solid-phase microextraction of the endocannabinoid anandamide in plasma samples from Parkinson’s disease patients and further analysis by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The molecularly imprinted polymer capillary presented recognition sites with complementary shape, size, and functionality to anandamide. Scanning electron micrographs and Fourier transform infrared spectra illustrated the physical and chemical modification of the printed and non-printed capillary surface. The in-tube solid-phase microextraction ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method presented a linear range from 0.1 to 20 ng mL-1, precision with coefficient of variation values ranging from 1.2 to 13%, and relative standard deviation accuracy ranging from -3.6 to 7.5%. The method developed herein can adequately determine anandamide in plasma samples from Parkinson’s disease patients. By applying the standard addition approach, the anandamide plasmatic concentration in these samples was found to range from 0.2 to 0.4 ng mL-1.

Abstract The incorporation of alternative materials in partial replacement of clinker is studied to reduce the CO2 emissions that occur in the production of Portland cement. The influence of using mesquite ash as an alternative filler in LC3 cement pastes was analyzed. The alkali content of the system was adjusted by washing the ash, thus reducing the potassium content. The filler was replaced at 0, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% washed ash, and the same for unwashed ash. Subsulfation was corrected by adding an extra gypsum percentage. Paste performance was assessed by rheology and compressive strength, supported by hydration kinetics and microstructural development. Mesquite ash is a potential alternative filler for application in LC3. Washed ash makes the system purer, contributing to hydration and mechanical performance, however, natural ash also brings promising results.

Resumo A incorporação de materiais alternativos em substituição parcial ao clínquer é estudada afim de diminuir a emissão de CO2 que ocorre na produção do cimento Portland. Analisou-se a influência do uso da cinza de algaroba como fíler alternativo em pastas de cimento LC3. O teor de álcali do sistema foi ajustado lavando a cinza e, assim, reduzindo o teor de potássio. O fíler foi substituído em 0, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% de cinza lavada e o mesmo para cinza não lavada. A subsulfatação foi corrigida adicionando-se uma porcentagem de gesso extra. O desempenho da pasta foi avaliado pela reologia e resistência à compressão, sustentada pela cinética de hidratação e desenvolvimento microestrutural. A cinza de algaroba é um potencial fíler alternativo para aplicação em LC3. A cinza lavada torna o sistema mais puro, contribuindo na hidratação e desempenho mecânico, entretanto, a cinza natural também traz resultados promissores.

ABSTRACT Family farming in Brazil holds a high diversity of melon germplasm, composing an important source of alleles for breeding programs. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and select genotypes from a population of melon sub-accessions from different botanical varieties grown by family farmers, based on morphological parameters. Two experiments were conducted, one in 2019 and another in 2020, in a complete randomized block design, with three replications and five plants per plot, using 27 melon sub-accessions (generation S2) from family farmers, and a commercial variety. Nine quantitative descriptors were evaluated. Assumptions of ANOVA were tested, followed by individual and joint analyses of variance. Significant differences were found among sub-accessions for all descriptors evaluated, with heritabilities higher than 83% and significant genotype-environment interactions for 88.8% of the characteristics evaluated. Thus, genetic variability was found among sub-accessions, with predominance of genetic effects over environmental effects, denoting the possibility to obtain genetic gains by the improvement of several characteristics of agronomic interest. The sub-accessions BGMEL66.0, BGMEL111.0, and BGMEL112.0 are recommended for inclusion in breeding programs focused on obtaining good prolificacy and small fruits with high soluble solid contents. BGMEL sub-accessions (108.3 and 108.5) can generate progenies with high prolificacy, and sub-accessions of the variety momordica can be used for generation of progenies focused on shortening the crop cycle and increasing fruit size.

RESUMO A agricultura familiar possui uma grande diversidade de germoplasma de melão, constituindo-se em uma importante fonte de alelos para uso em programas de melhoramento. Assim, o presente estudo objetivou estimar parâmetros genéticos e selecionar genótipos de uma população de subacessos de melão da agricultura familiar pertencentes a diferentes variedades botânicas, com base em caracteres morfológicos. Foram realizados dois experimentos (2019 e 2020), utilizando 27 subacessos de melão (geração S2) provenientes da agricultura familiar e uma variedade comercial, em Delineamento em Blocos Casualizados (DBC) com três repetições e cinco plantas por parcela. Para avaliação foram utilizados nove descritores quantitativos. Inicialmente testou-se as pressuposições da ANOVA e, em seguida, realizou-se a análise de variância individual e a análise conjunta. Com isso, constatou-se diferença significativa entre os subacessos para todos os descritores avaliados, com herdabilidades superiores a 83% e iteração G x A significativa para 88,8% das características avaliadas. Assim, percebeu-se a existência de variabilidade genética entre os subacessos, com predominância dos efeitos genéticos sobre os ambientais, sendo possível obter ganhos genéticos para o melhoramento de várias características de interesse agronômico. Indica-se os subacessos BGMEL66.0, BGMEL111.0 e BGMEL112.0 para serem inseridos em programas de melhoramento visando obter frutos pequenos, com uma boa prolificidade e elevado teor de sólidos solúveis. Já os subacessos BGMEL (108.3 e 108.5) podem fornecer progênies de elevada prolificidade e os subacessos da variedade momordica podem ser utilizados para extração de progênies que visem diminuir o ciclo da cultura e aumentar o tamanho do fruto.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation (GI) on the physicochemical, technological, antioxidant and microbiological characteristics of different whole sorghum flours (WSF), as well as to characterize the profile of chemical constituents by paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS). The doses applied interfered in the staining characteristics of the evaluated flours, providing the darkening of the same. For the other physicochemical, technological, and antioxidant parameters, no significant influence of the process was observed. The fingerprint obtained in both ionization modes had not been influenced by irradiation, being flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, amino acids, benzoic acid derivatives, carboxylic acids, and sugars tentatively identified. In microbiological terms, there was a reduction of molds, yeasts, and Bacillus cereus in irradiated WSF compared to control (non-irradiated). Therefore, the application of low doses of gamma irradiation represents an advantageous alternative for the conservation of WSF and maintenance of bioactive compounds identified by the PS-MS technique.

Resumo As interações entre fungos endofíticos (FEs) e suas plantas hospedeiras variam de positivas, neutras a negativas. Os resultados destas interações podem variar dependendo do órgão da planta hospedeira infectada. FEs isolados de folhas de algumas espécies de plantas têm potencial para serem usados como agentes inibidores da germinação de sementes e no controle de plantas invasoras. Os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar os FEs presentes nas folhas de Copaifera oblongifolia e avaliar o papel destes fungos na germinação das sementes e no desenvolvimento das plântulas. Um total de 11 espécies de FEs foi isolado das folhas de C. oblongifolia e identificado através da sequência dos espaçadores internos transcritos do DNA ribossomal nuclear. As espécies de FEs isoladas são generalistas e provavelmente devem ser transmitidas horizontalmente. Os resultados dos testes de germinação mostraram que filtrados destes isolados fúngicos podem afetar diferentemente a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento das plântulas de C. oblongifolia. As espécies Curvularia intermedia, Neofusicoccum parvum, Pseudofusicoccum stromaticum e Phomopsis sp. afetaram negativamente a germinação das sementes de C. oblongifolia. Dentre estas espécies devemos destacar que N. parvum reduziu a germinação e a sobrevivência das plântulas em 89 e 222%, respectivamente. Além disso, Cochiliobolus intermedius afetou negativamente o desenvolvimento das plântulas. Assim, o uso combinado de N. parvum e C. intermedius, ou de produtos do metabolismo destas espécies de fungos, têm potencial para serem usados no manejo de plantas invasoras.

Abstract Interactions between endophytic fungi (EFs) and their host plants range from positive to neutral to negative. The results of such interactions can vary depending on the organ of the infected host plant. EFs isolated from the leaves of some species of plants have potential for use as agents to inhibit seed germination and control invasive plants. The objectives of this study were to identify EFs present in the leaves of Copaifera oblongifolia and to evaluate the role of these fungi in seed germination and seedling development. A total of 11 species of EFs were isolated, which were identified using the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequence of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The isolated species of EFs are generalists and probably are transmitted horizontally. Laboratory tests revealed that filtrates of these fungal isolates differently affect seed germination and seedling development of C. oblongifolia. The species Curvularia intermedia, Neofusicoccum parvum, Pseudofusicoccum stromaticum and Phomopsis sp. negatively affected seed germination, with N. parvum standing out for its negative effects, inhibiting seedling germination and survival in 89 and 222%, respectively. In addition, Cochliobolus intermedius negatively affected seedling development. Thus, the combined use of N. parvum and C. intermedius, or products from the metabolism of these microorganisms, in the control of invasive plants deserves attention from future studies.

Abstract Objective: To assess factors associated with emotional changes and Hyperactivity/Inattention (HI) motivated by COVID-19 quarantine in adolescents with immunocompromising diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 343 adolescents with immunocompromising diseases and 108 healthy adolescents. Online questionnaires were answered including socio-demographic data and self-rated healthcare routine during COVID-19 quarantine and validated surveys: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL4.0). Results: The frequencies of abnormal emotional SDQ scores from adolescents with chronic diseases were similar to those of healthy subjects (110/343 [32%] vs. 38/108 [35%], p = 0.548), as well as abnormal hyperactivity/inattention SDQ scores (79/343 [23%] vs. 29/108 [27%], p = 0.417). Logistic regression analysis of independent variables associated with abnormal emotional scores from adolescents with chronic diseases showed: female sex (Odds Ratio [OR = 3.76]; 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) 2.00–7.05; p < 0.001), poor sleep quality (OR = 2.05; 95% CI 1.08–3.88; p = 0.028) and intrafamilial violence during pandemic (OR = 2.17; 95% CI 1.12–4.19; p = 0.021) as independently associated with abnormal emotional scores, whereas total PedsQL score was inversely associated with abnormal emotional scores (OR = 0.95; 95% CI 0.93–0.96; p < 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis associated with abnormal HI scores from patients evidenced that total PedsQL score (OR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.95–0.99; p = 0.010], changes in medical appointments during the pandemic (OR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.19–0.79; p = 0.021), and reliable COVID-19 information (OR = 0.35; 95% CI 0.16–0.77; p = 0.026) remained inversely associated with abnormal HI scores. Conclusion: The present study showed emotional and HI disturbances in adolescents with chronic immunosuppressive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reinforces the need to promptly implement a longitudinal program to protect the mental health of adolescents with and without chronic illnesses during future pandemics.

ABSTRACT Semi-mechanized and mechanized harvesting use machines that promote the transference of vibrational energy and impact to achieve the detachment of coffee fruits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vibration transmissibility in coffee fruit-peduncle systems, using high-speed cameras, submitted to high frequency harmonic excitation in different combinations between frequency and amplitude of vibration, identifying working ranges suitable to perform selective harvesting. Vibration transmissibility was determined for the coffee fruit-peduncle systems, for the maturation stages unripe and ripe that were subjected to a sinusoidal harmonic displacement, in which the input parameters were frequency (35, 45 and 55 Hz) and peak-to-peak amplitude (3.5, 5.0 and 6.5 mm). An experiment was used to study the effect of frequency and amplitude on vibration transmissibility in a completely randomized design in a factorial scheme 3 x 3 x 2, with three replications. The frequency of 35 Hz, associated with the amplitudes 3.5-6.5 mm, was the one that most influenced the results of vibration transmissibility. For the frequency of 55 Hz and amplitude of 6.5 mm, in the ripe maturation stage, the vibration transmissibility was higher than 1.0, which could be a suitable combination for selective coffee harvesting.

Abstract This study aimed to search parasites in 333 ornamental fish from five Brazilian states (Ceará, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina). Fish were sent from eight farms located in the municipalities of Fortaleza, Patrocínio do Muriaé, São Francisco do Glória, Cascavel, Timbó, Iguape, Jacareí and Mairinque. All fish received anesthesia earlier to euthanasia procedures. After the search for parasites, it was verified that 70.6% (235/333) of fishes were infected by at least one type of parasite, being 12 types of parasites identified: monogeneans, digenean metacercariae, cestodes, nematodes, Lernaea cyprinacea, trichodinids, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, diplomonad flagellates, Ichthyobodo sp., Chilodonella sp., and Tetrahymena sp. The proportion of infected fishes among the farms is compared through statistical tests, besides, animal handling adopted in each farm is also discussed. The importance of ensuring fish health in order to make the ornamental freshwater fish industry economically viable and reduce losses in production is highlighted.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi pesquisar parasitas presentes em 333 peixes ornamentais de cinco estados brasileiros (Ceará, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná e Santa Catarina). Os peixes eram oriundos de oito pisciculturas localizadas nos municípios de Fortaleza, Patrocínio do Muriaé, São Francisco do Glória, Cascavel, Timbó, Iguape, Jacareí e Mairinque. Todos os peixes foram anestesiados e eutanasiados para a pesquisa de parasitas. Após análise microscópica, foi verificado que 70.6% (235/333) dos peixes estavam infectados por ao menos uma espécie de parasita, sendo identificados 12 tipos: monogenoides, metacercárias, cestoides, nematoides, Lernaea cyprinacea, tricodinídeos, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, flagelados diplomonados, Ichthyobodo sp., Chilodonella sp., e Tetrahymena sp. A proporção de peixes infectados entre cada piscicultura é comparada através de testes estatísticos, além disso, o manejo adotado pelas diferentes pisciculturas também é discutido. A importância de assegurar a sanidade de peixes ornamentais, de forma a tornar a atividade economicamente viável e reduzir perdas na produção é enfatizada.

In this work, plasma nitriding (PN) and cathode cage plasma deposition (CCPN) treatments were carried out with temperatures of 400 and 450 °C to evaluate the modifications caused on the surface of pure niobium samples. XRD, SEM, Vickers microhardness, and sphere-disk analyses were used to characterize the coatings’ composition, morphology, hardness, and wear resistance. The results showed that the treated samples increased hardness and wear resistance, with the sample submitted to CCPN at 450 °C presenting the best tribological behavior.

AISI 6160 steel is used to manufacture cutting blades and springs due to its high tensile strength and good ductility. However, it has low mechanical strength and low wear resistance. In this work, a duplex treatment consisting of CCPD followed by PN was performed to improve the surface properties of the steel. In addition, XRD, optical microscopy, microhardness, and sphere-disk tribological analysis were used to verify the surface changes of the samples. The results showed a significant improvement in surface hardness and better wear resistance of AISI 6160 Steel submitted to Duplex treatment. The sample submitted to the CCPD treatment for 4 hours and, after nitriding at 500 °C for 2 hours, presented higher surface hardness and wear resistance than the sample only subjected to plasma deposition, characterizing the efficiency of the use of the duplex treatment adopted in the present work.

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta um algoritmo baseado no método Constrained Constructive Optimization (CCO) que possibilita gerar um modelo da estrutura geométrica de um sistema vascular com n árvores utilizando condições de contorno fisiológicas de pressão e fluxo, levando em conta a minimização do volume intravascular total durante a construção do modelo. ABSTRACT In this work we propose an algorithm based on the Constrained Constructive Optimization (CCO) method that generates a geometric model of the vascular system structure with n trees, considering fisiological conditions of flow, pressure, and taking into account the minimum intravascular volume while constructing the model. RESUMO Objetivo Estimar a prevalência e os fatores de risco para os sintomas e o diagnóstico clínico da doença do olho seco na cidade de São Paulo, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Métodos: Quinhentos e oitenta e dois participantes acima de 18 anos, residentes na zona leste da cidade de São Paulo responderam a um questionário de três perguntas sobre olho seco. A doença do olho seco foi definida pela presença de sintomas severos ou diagnóstico clínico prévio de doença do olho seco por um oftalmologista. A associação entre doença do olho seco e possíveis fatores de risco foi avaliada. Resultados: A prevalência de sintomas graves da doença do olho seco e/ou diagnóstico clínico foi calculada em 24,4% para ambos os sexos. O sexo feminino apresentou uma frequência maior de sintomas severos da doença do olho seco (16,07%) que o sexo masculino (8,48%; p=0,0244), assim como a associação de sintomas severos ou diagnóstico de doença do olho seco, foi de 26,86% no sexo feminino e 18,18% no sexo masculino (p=0,0366). No sexo feminino, a faixa etária entre 55 e 75 anos de idade foi associada com sintomas severos da DOS (odds ratios (OR) = 3,11; IC 95% 1,56-6,23; p=0,001) e com doença do olho seco diagnosticada (OR=2,02; IC 95% 1,04-3,93; p=0,037). Hipertensão foi associado com sintomas da doença do olho seco (OR=1,98; IC 95% 1,14-3,43; p=0,015) e diagnóstico da doença do olho seco (OR=3,54; IC 95% 1,92-6,53; p=0,001) no sexo feminino. Uso de colírios foi associado a sintomas severos e diagnóstico da doença do olho seco em ambos os sexos (p≤0,01). Conclusão: A prevalência da doença do olho seco na cidade de São Paulo é mais frequente no sexo feminino que no masculino. Idade e hipertensão foram fatores de risco maiores para doença do olho seco no sexo feminino, enquanto uso de colírios foi um indicador de doença do olho seco para ambos os sexos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To estimate the prevalence and risk factors of dry eye disease symptoms and clinical diagnoses in Sao Paulo city, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Methods: A total of 582 participants over 18 years old, living in the east zone of Sao Paulo city responded to a short questionnaire. Dry eye disease was on that is defined by the presence of severe symptoms or previous clinical diagnosis of dry eye disease by an ophthalmologist. The association between dry eye disease and possible risk factors was assessed. Results: Overall dry eye disease severe symptoms and/or clinical diagnoses prevalence was calculated as 24.4% for both sexes. Women presented a higher frequency of severe symptoms of dry eye disease (16.07%) than men (8.48%; p=0.0244), as well as the composite of severe symptoms or diagnosed dry eye disease, presented by 26.86% of women and 18.18% of men (p=0.0366). In women, ages between 55 to 75 years old were associated with dry eye disease severe symptoms (OR=3.11; 95%CI 1.56-6.23, p=0.001) and diagnosed dry eye disease (OR=2.02; 95% CI 1.04-3.93, p=0.037). Hypertension was significantly associated with dry eye disease symptoms (OR=1.98; 95% CI 1.14-3.43, p=0.015) and diagnoses (OR=3.54; 95% CI 1.92-6.53, p=0.0001) in women. Eye drops use was associated with severe symptoms of dry eye disease and diagnosed dry eye disease in both women and men (p≤0.01). Conclusions: Dry eye disease prevalence in Sao Paulo city is higher in women than in men. Age and hypertension were stronger risk factors of dry eye disease for women, while eye drops use was a significant indicator of dry eye disease for both sexes.

Eugenol (C10H12O2, 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) is a phenolic natural product that has several biological activities and possibilities of applications. It is herein described the synthesis of eugenol-fluorinated triazole derivatives and evaluation of their fungicidal activity. The reaction of eugenol with epichlorohydrin resulted in the preparation of (±)-2-((4-allyl-2-methoxyphenoxy)methyl)oxirane (1) in 88% yield. The azidolysis of 1 with sodium azide gave the azido-alcohol (±)-1-(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenoxy)-3-azidopropan-2-ol (2) in 94% yield. The CuAAc reaction between compound 2 and different terminal alkynes afforded a series of eleven derivatives (3a 3k) within 48-80% yield. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C) spectroscopies and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The in vitro inhibitory activity of the compounds on the mycelial growth of a strain of Colletotrichum sp., that causes anthracnose disease on papaya fruits, was evaluated. The best result was observed for compound 1-(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenoxy)-3-(4-(2-fluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)propan-2-ol (3d) that showed a mean growth-inhibition zone of 5.10 mm in a well-diffusion assay, and may serve as a template for additional structural modifications, aiming for more potent fungicidal activity.
