RESUMO O objetivo do artigo é apresentar e analisar a reflexão crítica de Roberto Schwarz sobre os impasses do processo de formação nacional, em particular o modo como esta se apresenta em alguns dos seus ensaios publicados nas últimas três décadas, a partir da virada para os anos 1990. À época, em meio às transformações pelas quais passavam o Brasil e o mundo, Schwarz radicalizou e ampliou o escopo da negatividade já presente nas suas reflexões precedentes, contrapondo-se às visões “positivas” da questão nacional, inscritas no horizonte da modernização capitalista. A hipótese central é a de que essa “negatividade periférica” pode ser apreendida por meio da compreensão do modelo de crítica (ensaística) cultivado pelo “último” Schwarz, modelo que define a sua posição singular no cenário intelectual brasileiro.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to present and analyze Roberto Schwarz’s critical reflection about the impasses of the national formation process, especially the way it presents itself in some of his essays published in the last three decades, since the turn to the 1990s. At the time, in face of the transformations that Brazil and the world were undergoing, Schwarz radicalized and broadened the scope of negativity already present in his previous reflections, as opposed to the “positive” views of the national question, inscribed on the horizon of capitalist modernization. The central hypothesis is that this “peripheral negativity” can be seen through the understanding of the (essayistic) critique model cultivated by the “last” Schwarz, a model that defines his unique position in the Brazilian intellectual scenario.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a obra (e a trajetória) de Schwarz do ponto de vista da sua abordagem - em suas continuidades e descontinuidades - dos desafios e impasses do pensamento social brasileiro, o qual estaria circunscrito, mesmo nas suas vertentes mais avançadas, como aquela oriunda do “Seminário d’O Capital”, ao horizonte modernizador e industrializante à luz do qual foram pensadas as soluções ao problema da má-formação nacional. Atina-se com a hipótese de que foi a transição precoce das ciências sociais para a crítica literária/cultural, sem renegar a primeira, bem ao contrário, que permitiu a Schwarz forjar uma visão singular da sociedade brasileira, sociedade esta pensada ao quadrado, à maneira adorniana, isto é, divisada através da análise crítica da experiência intelectual e/ou artística da época.

Abstract The aim of this article is to analyze the work of Schwarz from the point of view of his approach - in its continuities and discontinuities - on the challenges and dilemmas of Brazilian social thought, which would be restricted, even in their most advanced aspects, as the one from the “Seminar of The Capital”, to the horizon of the modernization. It is assumed that it was the early transition of social sciences to literary/cultural critique which allowed Schwarz to build a particular view of the Brazilian society, society squared thought, that is, a view through a critical analysis of the intellectual/artistic experience of the time.

Mais conhecido por sua afortunada trajetória internacional, em especial por aquela que se inicia a partir do final dos anos 1960 na França, Michael Löwy deu os primeiros passos de seu itinerário intelectual em São Paulo, na segunda metade da década de 1950, época em que cursou a graduação em Ciências Sociais na Faculdade de Filosofia da USP, então localizada na Rua Maria Antônia. O objetivo deste artigo é exatamente analisar a importância desse processo de formação intelectual de Löwy, entre o final da década de 1950 e meados da de 1970. Busca-se analisar algumas das linhas de força desse momento da trajetória intelectual do autor, das suas primeiras pesquisas sobre o movimento operário no âmbito da sociologia paulista até seus trabalhos mais teóricos – realizados na França – sobre as obras de Marx, Lukács e outros “intelectuais revolucionários”.

Although to be better known for his international trajectory, especially that which began in the late 1960s in France, it was in São Paulo that Michael Löwy began his intellectual itinerary in the second half of the 1950s. The purpose of this article is to analyze the importance of this process of intellectual formation of Löwy, between the late 1950s and the mid - 1970s. The aim is to analyze some of the leading threads of the intellectual trajectory of the author, from his first researches on the labor movement within the sociology of São Paulo until his more theoretical work in France, on the works of Marx, Lukács and other “revolutionary intellectuals”.

Bien que plus connu par sa trajectoire internationale brillant, notamment celle qui a commencé à la fin des années 1960 en France, Michael Löwy a fait les premiers pas de son parcours intellectuel à São Paulo dans la seconde moitié des années 1950, lorsqu’il a suivi le cours de Sciences Sociales à la Faculté de Philosophie de l’USP, alors située à la rue Maria Antônia. Le but de cet article est d’analyser l’importance de cette période pour la formation intellectuelle de Löwy, entre la fin des années 1950 et le milieu des années 1970. On cherche à analyser certains des fils conducteurs de cette période de la trajectoire intellectuelle de l’auteur, dès ses premières recherches sur le mouvement ouvrier au sein de la sociologie de São Paulo jusqu’à son travail plus théorique en France sur les œuvres de Marx, Lukacs et d’autres «intellectuels révolutionnaires».
