Abstract Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is the seed of a multipurpose plant of pharmaceutical interest, as its mucilage can be used as a natural matrix to develop extended-release dosage forms and potentially replace synthetic polymers. In this study, a 3² factorial design with two replicates of the central point was applied to optimize the development of extended-release granules of metformin HCl. The total fiber content of the mucilage as well as the friability and dissolution of the formulations were evaluated. The lyophilized mucilage presented a high total fiber content (42.63%), which suggests a high efficiency extraction process. Higher concentrations of the mucilage and metformin HCl yielded less friable granules. In addition, lower concentrations of metformin HCl and higher concentrations of the mucilage resulted in slower drug release during the dissolution assays. The release kinetics for most formulations were better represented by the Hixson-Crowell model, while formulations containing a higher concentration of the mucilage were represented by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. Nonetheless, five formulations showed a longer release than the reference HPMC formulation. More desirable results were obtained with a higher concentration of the mucilage (13-18%) and a lower concentration of metformin (40%).

In the last decades, 3D printing has emerged as a promising new paradigm for manufacturing. Even in the civil construction industry, it has gained attention from companies and researchers around the world. Despite of that, the properties of materials applied in the additive manufacturing process are still understudied. One of the challenges is the need to conciliate both high bearing capacity, sparing the need of any confining measures, and the ability of keeping fluidity for enough time, in order to avoid cold joints between the layers. In that scenario, viscosity enhancing admixtures (VEAs) can be a solution, because they are able of promoting flocculation, viscosity gain and yield strength increase, reducing the deposition time in between the layers, which may decrease the formation of cold joints. This research evaluated rheological parameters of four different VEAs and found out that they show potential for increasing the cohesion and buildability of concretes for 3D-printing. The results showed that this effect varies with the type and amount of the admixture adopted and bentonite clay, as a mineral powder material, performed best in comparison to other polymeric VEAs, presenting structuration rates of up to 62% higher than the reference mixture.

Nas últimas décadas, a impressão 3D emergiu como um novo e promissor paradigma de fabricação.  Mesmo na indústria da construção civil, ela tem ganhado atenção de empresas e pesquisadores de todo o mundo.  Apesar disso, as propriedades dos materiais aplicados no processo de manufatura aditiva ainda são pouco estudadas.  Um dos desafios está na necessidade de conciliar alta capacidade portante, poupando a necessidade de quaisquer medidas restritivas, com a capacidade de manter a fluidez por tempo suficiente, a fim de evitar juntas frias entre as camadas.  Nesse sentido, os aditivos Modificadores de viscosidade (VMAs) podem ser uma solução, pois são capazes de promover floculação, ganho de viscosidade e aumento da tensão de escoamento, reduzindo o tempo de deposição entre as camadas, o que pode diminuir a formação de juntas frias.  Esta pesquisa avaliou parâmetros reológicos de quatro VMAs diferentes e descobriu que eles apresentam potencial para aumentar a coesão e a construtibilidade de concretos para impressão 3D.  Os resultados mostraram que esse efeito varia com o tipo e a quantidade de aditivo adotado. Particularmente, a argila bentonita, como aditivo mineral em pó, apresentou melhor desempenho em comparação com os VMAs poliméricos, porduzindo taxas de estruturação até 62% superiores à mistura de referência.

Este trabalho faz parte de um programa de estudo sobre larvas meroplanctônicas que tem como objetivo o reconhecimento mais preciso das larvas no plâncton. Este estudo foi iniciado com a espécie Brachidontes solisianus (Bivalvia - Mytilidae) que é muito abundante nos costões rochosos da região de Cabo Frio. O desenvolvimento larvar foi realizado sob condições controladas durante 26 dias. A alimentação foi feita com Isochrysis galbana e Tetraselmis chui. A temperatura e a salinidade foram mantidas a 26° C e 28 ‰ , respectivamente. Diariamente, as larvas foram desenhadas em câmara clara e medidas com ocular micrométrica até a fixação. A primeira fase de véliger em forma de "D" ou Prodissoconcha I, mediu em média, 90 µm de comprimento por 70 µm de altura e a última, antes da fase de fixação (Pedivéliger), mediu 273 µm de comprimento e 257 µm de altura. No estudo comparativo das charneiras, duas espécies foram consideradas: Brachidontes solisianus e Perna perna. Observou-se que a espécie B. solisianus apresenta dentes mais evidentes nas extremidades do provinculum, enquanto na espécie P. perna aparecem ao longo de todo o provinculum.

This work, which is part of a study program on meroplankton larvae, aims to gain more in-depth knowledge about planktonic larvae. This study began with the mollusk Brachidontes solisianus (Bivalvia - Mytilidae), which is abundant on the rocky shores of the Cabo Frio region (state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Brachidontes solisianus larvae were grown under controlled conditions for a period of 26 days and were fed with Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis chui. The temperature was kept at 26 °C and the saltiness at 28‰. Images of the larvae were taken daily with a light camera and measured with a micrometric lens until settlement occurred. The average size of the first D-shaped veliger stage was 90 µm in length and 70 µm in height, while the size in the last stage before settlement (pediveliger) was 273 µm in length and 257 µm in height. The comparative study of the hinge system involved the most abundant intertidal species of the study area: Brachidontes solisianus and Perna perna. The B. solisianus species were found to have more visible denticles at the extremities of the provinculum, whereas the denticles of the P. perna species occur along the entire provinculum.
