SUMMARY: The study aimed at characterizing the arboreal-shrubby component in fragments of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The vegetation survey was performed in four sampled fragments in 57 plots. In the plots, the identification of the individuals and measurement of circumference at breast height (CAP) was carried out, according to the following classes of size: Class I) arboreal strata, individuals with CAP ≥ 30 cm (10 x 20 m); Class II) arboreal strata, individuals with 15 ≤ CAP < 30 cm (10 x 10 m); Class III) established natural regeneration, individuals with 3 ≤ CAP < 15 cm (5 x 5 m) and Class IV) bank of seedlings, individuals with height ≥ 30 cm and CAP < 3 cm (2 x 2 m). The data of Class I constituted a matrix parcel x species, which was used in a multivariate analysis, allowing the classification of groups of plots that characterize microhabitats. The forest fragments presented low floristic richness of typical species of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest. From this environment highlight two main groups, one characteristic of riparian forest and the other from capões. In the riparian forests (GR1), highlighted Eugenia uruguayensis and Gymnanthes klotzschiana. In capões (GR2), the predominant species were Araucaria angustifolia, Podocarpus lambertii and Myrceugenia cucullata. The condition of species in different classes associated with their ecological characteristics allows identifying possible strategies for perpetuation of the arboreal-shrubby component of population and management of the fragments aiming at its conservation.

RESUMEN: El estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el componente arbóreo-arbustivo en fragmentos de Bosque Umbrófilo Mixto. El relevamiento de la vegetación se realizó en cuatro fragmentos muestreados en 57 parcelas. Se identificaron los individuos y se midió la circunferencia a la altura del pecho (CAP), considerando las siguientes clases: Clase I) estrato arbóreo, CAP ≥ 30 cm (10 m x 20 m); Clase II) estrato arbóreo, 15 ≤ CAP < 30 cm (10 m x 10 m); Clase III) regeneración natural establecida, 3 ≤ CAP < 15 cm (5 m x 5 m) y clase IV) banco de plántulas, altura ≥ 30 cm y CAP < 3 cm (2 m x 2 m). Los datos del estrato arbóreo (Clase I) constituyeron una matriz de parcela x especie, la cual fue utilizada en análisis multivariado, permitiendo la clasificación de grupos de parcelas que caracterizan a los microhábitats. Los fragmentos de bosque en cumbres de la sierra presentaron baja riqueza florística de especies típicas del Bosque Umbrófilo Mixto. De este ambiente típico, se destacan dos grupos principales, uno característico de bosques de galería y el otro de bosques en islas (capões). En los bosques de galería (GR1), destacaron Eugenia uruguayensis y Gymnanthes klotzschiana. En los bosques en islas (GR2), las especies predominantes fueron Araucaria angustifolia, Podocarpus lambertii y Myrceugenia cucullata. La condición de especies en las diferentes clases asociadas a sus características ecológicas permite identificar posibles estrategias para perpetuar el componente arbóreo-arbustivo de las poblaciones y de fragmentos buscando su conservación.

RESUMO A região do Parque Estadual do Espinilho, inserida nos domínios fitogeográficos da Savana Estépica Parque, ainda é pouco estudada, apesar de ser destaque na flora sulina. Características como denso estrato herbáceo e árvores isoladas configuram-na como propícia à pecuária. Objetivou-se analisar alterações florísticas e edáficas impostas pelo pastejo em duas áreas do Parque, a primeira sob pastejo e a segunda protegida por cinco anos. Foram avaliadas propriedades físicas do solo e biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo, visando investigar relações com as principais espécies arbóreas regenerantes. Foi instalada uma unidade amostral de 2ha em ambas as áreas, compostas por 200 subunidades cada. O inventário do estrato regenerante, as coletas para análises de solo, biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo e testes de resistência do solo à penetração foram realizados em 50 subunidades. Os resultados avaliados pelo teste t de Student demonstram que há variações entre florística e fatores ambientais aferidos entre as duas áreas. A abundância das espécies P. affinis e V. caven e as variáveis resistência do solo à penetração, densidade do solo, umidade gravimétrica e biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo diferem significativamente. A análise exploratória de ordenação (PCoA) permite inferir que variáveis densidade do solo, resistência à penetração e abundância de espécies de V. caven apresentam maiores valores em área com pastejo, e umidade gravimétrica, biomassa aérea e abundância de P. affinis são maiores em área protegida, configurando significativas mudanças ao longo de apenas cinco anos de exclusão.

ABSTRACT Despite being prominent in flora, the region of the Parque Estadual do Espinilho located in the Pampas of southern Brazil, where dense herbaceous stratum and isolated trees make this region suitable for livestock farming, has received little attention. The objective of the study was to analyze floristic and edaphic changes imposed by livestock farming in two areas of the park, the first under livestock grazing and the second protected from grazing (livestock-excluded) for five years. We evaluated soil physical properties of and the herbaceous aboveground biomass in order to investigate relationships with key regenerating tree species. A sampling unit of 2ha was installed in both areas, each composed of 200 subunits. Inventory of regenerating trees and herbaceous aboveground biomass, soil sampling, and soil penetration resistance tests were done in 50 subunits. The results, which were evaluated by Student’s t-test, exhibited variations between the two areas in regards to floristic and environmental factors. The abundance of the P. affinis and V. caven species and the variables of soil penetration resistance, soil bulk density, gravimetric moisture and herbaceous aboveground biomass differ significantly between the two areas. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) allows to infer that variables such as soil bulk density, penetration resistance and the abundance of V. caven species exhibit higher values in the area under gazing, while gravimetric moisture, aboveground biomass and abundance of P. affinis are higher in the area under livestock-excluded, showing that significant changes occur over just five years of livestock-excluded from the area.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a composição florística, diversidade, padrões de distribuição espacial e estrutura da regeneração natural das espécies arbóreas em Savana Estépica Parque, localizada no Parque Estadual do Espinilho, extremo sudoeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Essa tipologia abriga uma vegetação peculiar, não ocorrendo em outras áreas do país, com presença de espécies endêmicas e vulneráveis. Para a análise, foi instalada uma unidade amostral permanente de 4ha (200x200m) subdividida em 400 subunidades de 100m² (10x10m) cada. Dessas, foram sorteadas 60 subunidades, em que todos os indivíduos com altura superior a 30cm e diâmetro ao nível do solo (DNS) tomado a ±03cm de altura, inferior a 9,5cm foram amostrados. Foram encontrados 174 indivíduos, distribuídos em cinco famílias botânicas, seis gêneros e seis espécies. A regeneração natural apresentou Índice de Diversidade de Shannon estimado em 0,82, indicando resultados baixos para a diversidade de espécies. As espécies com maiores valores de importância foram Vachellia caven (Molina) Molina (63,96%) e Celtis ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. (30%). Essas duas espécies apresentaram comportamento agregado, enquanto Prosopis affinis Spreng., espécie característica do parque, obteve comportamento não agregado segundo o Índice de Payandeh. A regeneração natural da área não se encontra balanceada, entretanto segue o modelo "J invertido", apresentando déficit de indivíduos na classe inicial de diâmetro, possivelmente devido ao pastoreio atualmente realizado no local.

This study aimed to evaluate the floristic composition, diversity, spatial distribution and structure of tree species natural regeneration in Steppe Savannah Park vegetation, located at southwest of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. This vegetation tipology is characteristic of this part of the country with endemic and vulnerable species. For analysis, a permanent unit sample of 4ha (200x200m) sub-divided in 400 subunits of 100m² (10x10m) each were installed. These, 60 subunits were randomly selected, where all trees taller than 30cm diameter at soil level (DSL) by ±3m of height, smaller than 9.5cm were sampled. It was found 174 individuals distributed in five botanical families, six genders and six different species. The natural regeneration presented Shannon's diversity index estimated at 0.82, indicating low results for diversity species. The species with highest importance values were Vachellia caven (Molina) Molina (63.96%) and Celtis ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. (30%). These two species presented aggregated behavior, while Prosopis affinis Spreng., characteristically park specie, had no aggregated behavior according to the Payandeh Index. The natural regeneration at the local is not balanced however follows the "J" inverted pattern model, with deficit of individuals at initial diameter class, possible due to current grazing in the area.
