Community composition, size and structure of the weed seed bank were analyzed along a micro-topographical gradient of 175-m length and 12.5% slope located in an agricultural field in Azul (Buenos Aires). Three soil samples were collected from each of eight equidistant positions upon the gradient. Seeds in samples were isolated through washing and screening, identified and counted. The number of apparently viable seeds along the gradient ranged 19680-61280 seeds/m². The latter value was recorded in the lowest position upon the gradient, and resulted significantly higher with respect to those from the remainder positions. Chenopodium album, Amaranthus quitensis, and Digitaria sanguinalis were the most abundant species in the seed bank. The spatial distribution pattern of the two first species showed a variance-mean ratio of 17.28 and 15.80, respectively, with a tendency to aggregation in the lowest position of the gradient. The changes in species richness, evenness, and specific diversity along the gradient were not significant, but the last two parameters showed a negatively significant correlation with seed density.

La composición, el tamaño y la estructura comunitaria del banco de semillas de malezas fueron analizados a lo largo de un gradiente microtopográfico de 175 m con una pendiente de 12.5% localizado en un lote agrícola de Azul (Buenos Aires). Tres muestras de suelo fueron tomadas en ocho posiciones equidistantes sobre el gradiente. Las semillas de cada muestra fueron extraídas mediante lavado y tamizado, identificadas y contadas. El contenido de semillas aparentemente viables varió entre 19680-61280 semillas/m². Este último valor se obtuvo en el sector más bajo del gradiente y resultó significativamente superior al del resto de las posiciones. Chenopodium album, Amaranthus quitensis y Digitaria sanguinalis fueron las especies más abundantes. Las dos primeras presentaron una relación varianza-media de 17.28 y 15.80, respectivamente, indicando una tendencia a la agregación en el sector más bajo del gradiente. La riqueza de especies, la equitatividad y la diversidad específica no variaron significativamente a lo largo del gradiente, pero las dos últimas se correlacionaron negativamente con la densidad de semillas.

No Distrito Azul, zona central da província de Buenos Aires (Argentina), encontram-se ambientes de planície na parte norte e ambientes serranos na parte sul. Esta última, constituí-se numa área predominantemente agrícola, onde a cultura de trigo, principal atividade agrícola, se alterna com culturas de verão como milho, girassol e soja. Com o objetivo de caracterizar globalmente o banco de sementes da área agrícola, foram analisados o conteúdo de sementes, a composição de espécies, a distribuição e variabilidade espacial das espécies que o compõem. A informação básica foi obtida aplicando-se a técnica da emergência em amostras de solo correspondentes a 20 locais alinhados numa faixa de 14 km. A densidade de sementes nos locais de amostragem variou entre 1.173 e 44.000 sem/m2. Na totalidade, foram detectadas 33 espécies. Digitaria sanguinalis foi claramente a espécie dominante, aportando com quase 43 % do banco, seguida de Polygonum aviculare com um aporte de 15 %. As duas espécies, juntamente com Anagallis arvensis e Setaria viridis completam70 % do banco de sementes. A composição específica completa-se com um grupo de 29 espécies, os quais contribuem, cada um delas, com menos de 5%. A distribuição espacial das espécies ao longo da faixa estudada mostrou um grau de agregação variável, sendo encontrada uma correlação positiva significativa entre o tamanho do banco e a relação variância/média. Demonstrou-se, assim, que as espécies mais abundantes em média, apresentaram grande variabilidade espacial. Nelas, foram observados diferentes padrões de distribuição espacial.

Azul, in the center of the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), includes flat environments in the north and hill environments in the south. Last constitutes a predominantly agricultural area where the wheat crop, principal activity, alternates with summer crops as corn, sunflower and soybean. The objetive of the present paper is to characterize the weed seed bank of such area in a global way. The whole rank of seed density and the relative abundance distribution and spatial design of species were analyzed. The basic information was obtained applying the germination technique to soil samples corresponding to 20 sites on a regional transect of 14 km. The seed density rank for the study area was 1173-44000 seeds/m2, and 33 species were recorded. Digitaria sanguinalis is the predominant species with 43 % of the seed bank, followed by Polygonum aviculare with 15 %. Both species together with Anagallis arvensis and Setaria viridis constitute the 70 % of the seed bank. The spatial distribution of species along the transect showed a variable aggregation degree, recording a significant positive correlation between the contribution to seed bank and the variance/mean ratio. This correlation demostrates that the most abundant species show a greater spatial variation, although different distribution patterns were observed.
