Abstract Background Sjogren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is a neurocutaneous disease with an autosomal recessive inheritance, caused by mutations in the gene that encodes fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH3A2), clinically characterized by ichthyosis, spastic diplegia, and cognitive impairment. Brain imaging plays an essential role in the diagnosis, demonstrating a nonspecific leukoencephalopathy. Data regarding brain atrophy and grey matter involvement is scarce and discordant. Objective We performed a volumetric analysis of the brain of two siblings with SLS with the aim of detecting deep grey matter nuclei, cerebellar grey matter, and brainstem volume reduction in these patients. Methods Volume data obtained from the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the two patients using an automated segmentation software (Freesurfer) was compared with the volumes of a healthy control group. Results Statistically significant volume reduction was found in the cerebellum cortex, the brainstem, the thalamus, and the pallidum nuclei. Conclusion Volume reduction in grey matter leads to the hypothesis that SLS is not a pure leukoencephalopathy. Grey matter structures affected in the present study suggest a dysfunction more prominent in the thalamic motor pathways.

Resumo Antecedentes A Síndrome de Sjogren-Larsson (SSL) é uma doença neurocutânea de herança autossômica recessiva, causada por mutações no gene que codifica a aldeído graxo desidrogenase (ALDH3A2), caracterizada clinicamente por ictiose, diplegia espástica e comprometimento cognitivo. A imagiologia cerebral desempenha um papel essencial no diagnóstico, demonstrando uma leucoencefalopatia inespecífica. Dados sobre atrofia cerebral e envolvimento da substância cinzenta são escassos e discordantes. Objetivo Realizamos uma análise volumétrica do cérebro de dois irmãos com SLS com o objetivo de detectar núcleos profundos de substância cinzenta, substância cerebral cinzenta e redução do volume do tronco encefálico nestes pacientes. Métodos Os dados de volume obtidos da ressonância magnética (RM) cerebral dos dois pacientes usando um software de segmentação automática (Freesurfer) foram comparados com os volumes de um grupo controle saudável. Resultados Redução de volume estatisticamente significativa foi encontrada no córtex do cerebelo, no tronco cerebral, no tálamo e nos núcleos pálidos. Conclusão A redução do volume da substância cinzenta leva à hipótese de que a SSL não é uma leucoencefalopatia pura. As estruturas da substância cinzenta afetadas no presente estudo sugerem uma disfunção mais proeminente nas vias motoras talâmicas.

The water treatment sludge (WTS) is a residue composed of organic and inorganic matter in a solid, liquid, and gaseous state that has a variable composition concerning its physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. The irregular disposal of WTS can promote harmful changes to the environment, such as reduction of dissolved oxygen and increase in the concentration of aluminum and other metals in the receiving watercourses. To propose a suitable purpose for this residue, this work evaluated the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete and corrosion resistance of the reinforcement in a cementitious composite using WTS in replacement to the natural sand. A conventional concrete and a conventional mortar were used as a reference and a 3% WTS-content concrete, and a 3% WTS-content mortar were prepared to evaluate the WTS influence in mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. By electrochemical measurements, it was observed that the resistance of the cementitious matrix was not altered by WTS addition. Regarding steel resistance, the WTS may promote a higher susceptibility to frame corrosion, which can be correlated to the lower pH than reference medium (REF). The concrete reinforcement characterization indicates that concretes with WTS can be used as reinforced concrete structure in urban areas.

Abstract Eugenol is a phenolic compound with numerous biological activities. It is widely used in dentistry to treat toothache and pulpitis. In particular, eugenol may be used for tooth whitening procedures to minimize dental sensitivity in patients. However, eugenol has some disadvantages such as its volatility, its photosensitivity, and immediate effect, which can be avoided by using pharmaceutical nanotechnology. The aim of the present study was to obtain, characterize, quantify, and evaluate the physicochemical stability of eugenol-loaded Eudragit RS100 nanocapsules. The nanocapsules (NCs) were prepared by interfacial deposition of the preformed polymer method. The NCs were characterized through morphological and spectroscopic studies. The encapsulation efficiency was achieved by quantifying the non-encapsulated eugenol using a previously developed and validated analytical method. The physicochemical stability of NCs was assessed at predetermined time intervals for 90 days after preparation. The nanocapsules were successfully prepared by the chosen method and had a predominantly spherical shape with a smooth surface. The mean size, the polydispersion index, and the zeta potential were in agreement to literature data. Infrared spectra ensured that the nanoencapsulation process did not result in chemical reactions between the drug and the polymer. The formulations showed encapsulation efficiency higher than 90% and remained stable after 60 days of preparation. Thus, eugenol-loaded Eudragit RS100 nanocapsules may be further considered as an alternative formulation for dental sensitivity in order to provide a controlled release, a decreased toxicity, and a better dental sensitivity relief.

ABSTRACT: In the last decades, the high incidence of viruses transmitted by whiteflies has become a problem in the tomato fields, threatening, more recently, the potato crops. The present study carried out a survey of begomoviruses and criniviruses in tomato and potato crops, from 2015 to 2018, in the municipalities of Araucária, Campo do Tenente, Campo Largo, Contenda, Lapa, Faxinal, Morretes, Reserva, Castro, Palmeira and São Mateus do Sul, in Paraná State, Brazil. Total DNA and RNA from leaves were extracted and used as templates to detect, respectively, begomoviruses by PCR and criniviruses by RT-PCR. Out of 215 tomato samples, 14 from Faxinal were infected by crinivirus. The other tomato samples and 243 potato samples showed negative results for begomovirus and crinivirus. Results indicated a low incidence (6.5%) of crinivirus infecting tomato crops in Paraná State, and the nucleotide sequence of one amplified fragment shared 99.71% identity with tomato chlorotic virus (ToCV).

RESUMO: Nas últimas décadas, a alta incidência de vírus transmitidos por mosca-branca tornou-se um problema nos campos de tomateiros, ameaçando, mais recentemente, a cultura da batateira. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento de begomovírus e crinivírus em lavouras de tomateiro e batateira nos municípios de Araucária, Campo do Tenente, Campo Largo, Contenda, Lapa, Faxinal, Morretes, Reserva, Castro, Palmeira e São Mateus do Sul, no Estado do Paraná, Brasil, de 2015 à 2018. DNA e RNA totais de folhas foram extraídos e utilizados como molde para detectar begomovírus por PCR e crinivírus por RT-PCR. Das 215 amostras de tomateiros coletadas, 14 provenientes de Faxinal estavam infectadas por crinivírus. As demais amostras de tomateiro e as 243 amostras de batateira analisadas apresentaram resultados negativo para begomovírus e crinivírus. Os resultados indicaram baixa incidência (6,5%) de crinivírus infectando lavouras de tomateiros no Estado do Paraná e a sequência de nucleotídeos de um amplicon apresentou 99,71% de identidade com o crinivírus tomato chlorotic virus (ToCV).

ABSTRACT Objective: A substantial number of people with COPD suffer from exacerbations, which are defined as an acute worsening of respiratory symptoms. To minimize exacerbations, telehealth has emerged as an alternative to improve clinical management, access to health care, and support for self-management. Our objective was to map the evidence of telehealth/telemedicine for the monitoring of adult COPD patients after hospitalization due to an exacerbation. Methods: Bibliographic search was carried in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science, Scopus, Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde/LILACS and Cochrane Library databases to identify articles describing telehealth and telemonitoring strategies in Portuguese, English, or Spanish published by December of 2021. Results: Thirty-nine articles, using the following concepts (number of articles), were included in this review: telehealth (21); telemonitoring (20); telemedicine (17); teleconsultation (5); teleassistance (4); telehomecare and telerehabilitation (3 each); telecommunication and mobile health (2 each); and e-health management, e-coach, telehome, telehealth care and televideo consultation (1 each). All these concepts describe strategies which use telephone and/or video calls for coaching, data monitoring, and health education leading to self-management or self-care, focusing on providing remote integrated home care with or without telemetry devices. Conclusions: This review demonstrated that telehealth/telemedicine in combination with telemonitoring can be an interesting strategy to benefit COPD patients after discharge from hospitalization for an exacerbation, by improving their quality of life and reducing re-hospitalizations, admissions to emergency services, hospital length of stay, and health care costs.

RESUMO Objetivo: Um número substancial de pessoas com DPOC sofre de exacerbações, definidas como uma piora aguda dos sintomas respiratórios. Para minimizar as exacerbações, a telessaúde surgiu como alternativa para melhorar o manejo clínico, o acesso aos cuidados de saúde e o apoio à autogestão. Nosso objetivo foi mapear as evidências de telessaúde/telemedicina para o monitoramento de pacientes adultos com DPOC após hospitalização por exacerbação. Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica nos bancos de dados PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science, Scopus, Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde/LILACS e Cochrane Library para identificar artigos que descrevessem estratégias de telessaúde e telemonitoramento em português, inglês, ou espanhol, publicados até dezembro de 2021. Resultados: Trinta e nove artigos, utilizando os seguintes conceitos (número de artigos), foram incluídos nesta revisão: telessaúde (21); telemonitoramento (20); telemedicina (17); teleconsulta (5); teleassistência (4); telecuidado domiciliar e telerreabilitação (3 cada); telecomunicação e saúde móvel (2 cada); e gestão de e-saúde, e-coach, teledomicílio, cuidados de telessaúde e tele/videoconsulta (1 cada). Todos esses conceitos descrevem estratégias que utilizam chamadas telefônicas e/ou de vídeo para coaching, monitoramento de dados e educação em saúde levando à autogestão ou autocuidado, com foco na prestação de cuidados domiciliares remotos integrados, com ou sem dispositivos de telemetria. Conclusões: Esta revisão demonstrou que a telessaúde/telemedicina associada ao telemonitoramento pode ser uma estratégia interessante para beneficiar pacientes com DPOC após a alta hospitalar por exacerbação, por meio da melhora da qualidade de vida e da redução das re-hospitalizações, admissões em serviços de emergência, tempo de internação hospitalar e custos de cuidados de saúde.

Objective: to identify, in the literature, the defining characteristics and factors related to the Frail Elderly Syndrome Nursing Diagnosis. Method: Integrative Literature Review, through the CAPES journal portal, in the LILACS, SCOPUS, BDENF, CINAHL MEDLINE, PubMed, Web Of Sciences and SciELO databases. In addition to the use of gray literature in Google Scholar and Open Grey. Result: Eight articles and one dissertation were included. All publications were Brazilian, with a predominance of cross-sectional studies. The most frequent defining characteristics were: Impaired physical mobility; Decreased activity tolerance; Imbalanced nutrition: less than body needs and impaired ambulation. Three new features were identified: Urinary Incontinence; Dysfunctional family processes and sleep pattern disturbance. Regarding related factors, the most frequent were: Decreased muscle strength; Cognitive dysfunction and impaired postural balance. Conclusion: given the results found, we suggest the inclusion of the defining characteristic Urinary Incontinence, for the nursing diagnosis Frail Elderly Syndrome. Contributions to practice: the study provides nurses with a deeper understanding of the aforementioned diagnosis, supporting clinical reasoning.

Objetivo: identificar, na literatura, as características definidoras e os fatores relacionados ao Diagnóstico de Enfermagem Síndrome do Idoso Frágil. Método: Revisão Integrativa da Literatura, por meio do portal de periódicos da CAPES, nas bases de dados LILACS, SCOPUS, BDENF, CINAHL MEDLINE, PubMed, Web Of Sciences e SciELO. Além da utilização de literatura cinzenta no Google Scholar e Open Grey. Resultado: Foram incluídos oito artigos e uma dissertação. Todas as publicações eram brasileiras, com a predominância de estudos do tipo transversal. As características definidoras mais frequentes foram: Mobilidade física prejudicada; Tolerância à atividade diminuída; Nutrição desequilibrada: menor do que as necessidades corporais e Deambulação prejudicada. Três novas características foram identificadas: Incontinência Urinária; Processos familiares disfuncionais e Distúrbio no padrão de sono. Sobre os fatores relacionados, os mais frequentes foram: Força muscular diminuída; Disfunção cognitiva e Equilíbrio postural prejudicado. Conclusão: diante dos resultados encontrados, sugere-se a inclusão da característica definidora Incontinência Urinária, para o diagnóstico de enfermagem Síndrome do Idoso Frágil. Contribuições para prática: o estudo disponibiliza ao enfermeiro um aprofundamento no referido diagnóstico, subsidiando o raciocínio clínico.

Resumo A pandemia COVID-19 trouxe uma série de reestruturações necessárias à pesquisa em Psicologia do Desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as adaptações que realizamos em pesquisas neste contexto durante a pandemia de COVID-19 e apresentar estratégias para adequação de protocolos de pesquisa originalmente planejados para ocorrer de forma presencial. Embora alguns contextos não permitam a continuidade dos estudos, pesquisas nesse momento podem trazer importantes contribuições sobre este período ímpar. No presente artigo são exploradas estratégias de adaptação dos procedimentos de recrutamento, sugeridas plataformas de divulgação e como melhor usar as redes sociais para esse fim. Também são descritos procedimentos para realização de entrevistas não presenciais com responsáveis, formas de avaliação da interação das duplas mãe-criança e problematizadas questões éticas. Os procedimentos de devolução dos resultados, um compromisso ético dos pesquisadores, podem ser facilitados por recursos como relatórios automáticos. Além disso, sugerimos estratégias para melhor divulgação dos resultados ao público participante.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic brought a series of restructurings necessary for research in Developmental Psychology. The aim of the manuscript is to discuss adaptations we made in our research in this context during the COVID-19 pandemic and to present strategies to adequate research protocols originally designed to occur in person. Although some contexts do not allow the continuity of studies, research at this time can bring essential contributions in this extreme period. This article explores the strategies for adapting recruitment procedures, suggesting dissemination platforms, and using social networks for this purpose. Guidelines are suggested for conducting non-face-to-face interviews with caregivers, ways of assessing the interaction of the mother-child pairs, and problematizing ethical issues. The procedures for returning the results, an ethical researcher commitment, may be improved by resources such as automatic reports. Besides, strategies for better dissemination of the results for the participants are suggested.

Resumen La pandemia del COVID-19 trajo una serie de reestructuraciones necesarias para la investigación en Psicología del Desarrollo. El objetivo de este artículo es discutir las adaptaciones realizadas en las investigaciones en este contexto durante la pandemia de COVID-19 y presentar algunas estrategias para la adaptación de los protocolos de investigación originalmente planeados para ser presenciales. Si bien algunos contextos no permitan la continuidad de los estudios, la investigación en este momento puede aportar importantes avances sobre estos tiempos de crisis. Este artículo explora las estrategias para adaptar los procedimientos de contratación, sugiriendo algunas plataformas de difusión y la mejor manera de utilizar las redes sociales para este fin. También se describen los procedimientos para la realización de entrevistas no presenciales con padres o tutores legales, las formas de evaluar la interacción madre-hijo y las cuestiones éticas. Los procedimientos para la devolución de los resultados, un compromiso ético de los investigadores, pueden verse facilitados por funciones como informes automáticos. Además, se recomienda estrategias para una mejor difusión de los resultados al público participante.

As atividades que no imaginário social estão mais relacionadas com a perspectiva de desenvolvimento da aptidão física estão presentes, com “esportes” e “exercícios físicos e ginásticos” os mais relatados. Entretanto, percebe-se uma abrangência para outras que são menos marcadas pela expectativa de desenvolvimento da aptidão física.

We collected data through semi-structured interviews with 18 Physical Education professionals, members of the eight CAPS teams in Goiânia (GO), Brazil. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results indicated that the interventions involve different themes. In the social imagination, the activities are instead related to the perspective of physical fitness development, and “sports” and “physical and gymnastic exercises” were the most reported. However, there is a scope for others that are less marked by the expected physical fitness development.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar os principais cuidados de enfermagem para a realização do banho no leito em pacientes com COVID-19. Método: revisão integrativa da literatura. Percorreram-se cinco etapas para esta pesquisa: elaboração da questão de pesquisa (identificação do problema), busca dos estudos na literatura, avaliação dos estudos, análise dos dados e apresentação da revisão. Para a busca dos estudos primários, selecionaram-se as bases de dados BVS e SciELO. Resultados: inicialmente, foram encontradas 55 publicações. Após leitura e análise dos resumos, a amostra foi composta por 15 estudos. Conclusão: pacientes com o novo coronavírus têm cuidados específicos para a realização do banho no leito, higiene bucal, íntima e com a pele. É importante que os profissionais utilizem Equipamento de Proteção Individual adequado, executem um cuidado humanizado, observando, continuamente, os sinais vitais dos pacientes para evitar a ocorrência de eventos adversos, promovendo a segurança do paciente.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the main nursing care procedures for performing bed bath in patients with COVID-19. Method: an integrative literature review. Five stages were followed for this research: research question elaboration (identification of the problem), search of studies in literature, study assessment, data analysis, and presentation of review. To search for primary studies, the VHL and SciELO databases were selected. Results: initially, 55 publications were found. After reading and analyzing the abstracts, the sample consisted of 15 studies. Conclusion: patients with the new coronavirus have specific care to perform a bed bath, oral, intimate and skin hygiene. It is important that professionals use adequate personal protective equipment, perform humanized care, continuously observing patients’ vital signs to avoid occurrence of adverse events, promoting patient safety.

RESUMEN Objetivo: identificar los principales procedimientos asistenciales de enfermería para realizar un baño en cama en pacientes con COVID-19. Método: revisión integradora de la literatura. Se siguieron cinco etapas para esta investigación: elaboración de la pregunta de investigación (identificación del problema), búsqueda de estudios en la literatura, evaluación de estudios, análisis de datos y presentación de la revisión. Para la búsqueda de estudios primarios, se seleccionaron las bases de datos BVS y SciELO. Resultados: inicialmente se encontraron 55 publicaciones. Después de leer y analizar los resúmenes, la muestra estuvo formada por 15 estudios. Conclusión: los pacientes con el nuevo coronavirus tienen cuidados específicos para realizar un baño en la cama, higiene bucal, íntima y cutánea. Es importante que los profesionales utilicen equipos de protección personal adecuados, realicen cuidados humanizados, observando continuamente los signos vitales de los pacientes para evitar la ocurrencia de eventos adversos, promoviendo la seguridad del paciente.

RESUMO: Um cão macho, da raça Terrier Brasileiro de seis meses de idade, com dispnéia e tosse persistente foi diagnosticado com colapso traqueal intratorácico e pneumonia após estudo radiográfico de tórax. Foi instituído tratamento médico e realizada toracotomia para a implantação de prótese traqueal extraluminal de nitinol. O animal não manifestou dispneia ou pneumonia durante os quatro anos posteriores ao procedimento. A implantação da prótese extraluminal através da toracotomia foi eficaz para o tratamento do colapso traqueal intratorácico, sem provocar danos estruturais na região torácica. Desta forma, este é primeiro relato da utilização bem-sucedida deste tipo de prótese, a partir da abordagem intercostal, no tratamento de cães com colapso traqueal intratorácico.

ABSTRACT: A six-month-old male Brazilian Terrier with persistent cough and dyspnea was diagnosed with intrathoracic tracheal collapse and pneumonia after chest radiographics. The medical treatment was performed, and an extraluminal nitinol prosthesis was placed through thoracic access. The dog did not presented recurrence of dyspnea or pneumonia for four years after the surgical procedure. Placement of the extraluminal prosthesis with the thoracic approach effectively stabilized intrathoracic tracheal collapse without causing any structural damage in the thoracic region. Therefore, this is the first report of a successful use of this prosthesis with an intercostal approach in dogs for intrathoracic trachea collapse.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura disponível sobre a relação entre alterações auditivas e deficiência da biotinidase. Métodos: a busca foi realizada entre outubro de 2018 e agosto de 2021, nas bases de dados: ELSEVIER, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS. Utilizaram-se descritores em português, inglês e espanhol, além das ferramentas PRISMA para seleção dos artigos e STROBE para análise dos mesmos. Revisão da Literatura: foram selecionados artigos publicados entre 1983 e 2020 que respondiam à pergunta norteadora da pesquisa. Foram incluídos estudos observacionais, estudos de série de casos e relatos de caso, e excluídos os artigos sem descrição dos métodos utilizados, realizados pelo mesmo autor e com a mesma amostra. A estratégia de busca inicial identificou 152 artigos. Após aplicados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, 14 artigos foram incluídos na presente revisão. Conclusão: a presença de biotina foi frequentemente associada à gênese das vias auditivas. Foi observada uma relação sugerida pela literatura entre deficiência da biotinidase e alterações auditivas.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review the available literature on the relationship between hearing disorders and Biotinidase deficiency. Methods: a literature search carried out between October 2018 and August 2021, on the following databases: ELSEVIER, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS. Descriptors were used in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. PRISMA tools were used to select the articles and STROBE was used to analyze them. Literature Review: the selected articles were published between 1983 and 2020 and answered the guiding question of the research. Observational studies, case series studies, and case reports were included. Articles without a methodology description, or carried out by the same author and with the same sample were excluded. The initial search strategy identified 152 articles. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were selected for this review. Conclusion: the presence of Biotin was often associated with auditory pathways origins. The literature suggested a relationship between Biotinidase deficiency and hearing disorders.

Resumo Uma vez que o sistema calpaína é central para o amaciamento da carne e dada a importância da atividade de calpastatina na determinação da maciez de bifes de bovinos Bos taurus indicus, o objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar se a expressão do gene de μ-calpaína (CAPN1), calpastatina total (CAST T), e suas variantes (CAST I e II) foi induzido pela inclusão de vitamina D3 na dieta. Os animais receberam nenhuma ou 2 × 106 UI dose de vitamina D3 por 2 ou 8 dias antes do abate, e foram submetidos a diferentes condições durante o confinamento: exposição solar ou sombreamento artificial. Bifes do Longissimus lumborum foram fabricados e submetidos a maturação por 1, 7, e 21 dias post-mortem e posteriormente usados para determinação da força de cisalhamento e do índice de fragmentação miofibrilar. Vitamina D3 não influenciou a abundância de RNAm, exceto para maior abundância de transcritos de CAST II em animais que foram suplementados por 8 dias antes do abate. Foi encontrada associação negativa entre a abundância de CAST II e a força de cisalhamento. Essa contradição revela uma importante modulação da expressão do sistema calpaína resultado da suplementação com vitamina D que pode ser importante na determinação de estratégias para melhorar a maciez da carne.

ABSTRACT The calpain system is the central player for meat tenderization and the calpastatin activity plays an important role in beef tenderness of Bos taurus indicus cattle. This study investigated whether dietary vitamin D3 induced gene expression of μ-calpain (CAPN1), total calpastatin (CAST T), and their variants (CAST I and II). Animals received none or 2 × 106 IU of vitamin D3 for either 2 or 8 days before slaughter and were submitted to different conditions during feedlot: sun exposure or artificial shade. Steaks from Longissimus lumborum were fabricated, aged for 1, 7, and 21 days post-mortem, and later used for the analyses of shear force and the myofibrillar fragmentation index. Vitamin D3 did not influence mRNA abundance; however, it induced a greater CAST II transcript in animals supplemented 8 days before slaughter. There was a negative association between CAST II abundance and the shear force, which revealed an important modulation of the calpain system expression due to vitamin D supplementation. This result is an important tool for strategies to improve beef tenderness.
