ABSTRACT Zinnia sp. and hairy beggartick (Bidens pilosa) plants exhibiting symptoms of possible virus infection were found in the municipality of Santa Bárbara d’Oeste, São Paulo State, Brazil. Flexuous filamentous particles and cytoplasmatic inclusions typical of potyvirus infection were observed by transmission electron microscopy, respectively, in leaf extracts and cells of symptomatic leaves. Infection of both plants with bidens mottle virus (BiMoV) was confirmed by RT-PCR using potyvirus universal primers, followed by nucleotide sequencing of the amplicons. The nearly complete genome sequence of the Brazilian isolate, named BiMoV-BR, is 9700 nucleotides long and shares 95.6 % identity with the corresponding nucleotide sequence of a BiMoV isolate from the United States. BiMoV-BR was mechanically transmitted and caused systemic infection on plants of Zinnia sp., hairy beggarstick, sunflower (Helianthus annuus), and lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Myzus persicae transmitted the virus to Zinnia sp. plants with efficacy of 8 % and 42 %, using one and ten aphids per plant, respectively. This is the first detection of BiMoV in Brazil. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the distribution of this potyvirus in the country.

ABSTRACT Background: Critical illness is a major ongoing health care burden worldwide and is associated with high mortality rates. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors have consistently shown benefits in cardiovascular and renal outcomes. The effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors in acute illness have not been properly investigated. Methods: DEFENDER is an investigator-initiated, multicenter, randomized, open-label trial designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin in 500 adult participants with acute organ dysfunction who are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Eligible participants will be randomized 1:1 to receive dapagliflozin 10mg plus standard of care for up to 14 days or standard of care alone. The primary outcome is a hierarchical composite of hospital mortality, initiation of kidney replacement therapy, and intensive care unit length of stay, up to 28 days. Safety will be strictly monitored throughout the study. Conclusion: DEFENDER is the first study designed to investigate the use of a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor in general intensive care unit patients with acute organ dysfunction. It will provide relevant information on the use of drugs of this promising class in critically ill patients. ClinicalTrials.gov registry: NCT05558098

RESUMO Antecedentes: A doença crítica é um importante ônus permanente da assistência médica em todo o mundo e está associada a altas taxas de mortalidade. Os inibidores do cotransportador de sódio-glicose do tipo 2 têm demonstrado consistentemente benefícios nos desfechos cardiovasculares e renais. Os efeitos dos inibidores do cotransportador de sódio-glicose do tipo 2 em doenças agudas ainda não foram devidamente investigados. Métodos: O DEFENDER é um estudo de iniciativa do investigador, multicêntrico, randomizado, aberto, desenhado para avaliar a eficácia e a segurança da dapagliflozina em 500 participantes adultos com disfunção orgânica aguda hospitalizados na unidade de terapia intensiva. Os participantes aptos serão randomizados 1:1 para receber 10mg de dapagliflozina e o tratamento padrão por até 14 dias ou apenas o tratamento padrão. O desfecho primário é um composto hierárquico de mortalidade hospitalar, início de terapia renal substitutiva e tempo de internação na unidade de terapia intensiva, até 28 dias. O monitoramento da segurança será rigoroso durante todo o estudo. Conclusão: O DEFENDER é o primeiro estudo desenvolvido para investigar o uso de um inibidor do cotransportador de sódio-glicose do tipo 2 em pacientes de unidade de terapia intensiva geral com disfunção orgânica aguda. O estudo fornecerá informações relevantes sobre o uso de medicamentos dessa classe promissora em pacientes críticos. Registro ClincalTrials.gov: NCT05558098

Yield and economic analysis of soybean cultivation in succession with different autumn/winter crops in Midwest of Paraná, Brazil

ABSTRACT Soybean and corn succession system widely adopt in different agricultural regions from Brazil. However, different species incorporation, especially in the autumn/winter season, can influence the soybeans profitability in succession system and farm economic return, providing benefits for the agricultural sector. The objective this work was to analyze the development of different species in the autumn-winter crop and the influence on soybean yield and the economic return of farm in Midwest of Paraná, Brazil. The study was conducted during 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 crop. A completely randomized design adopted, with eight treatments (autumn/winter season) and four replications. In autumn/winter season were composed of five crops in single system (black oat, brachiaria ruziziensis, oilseed radish, corn and wheat), two in intercropped systems (black oat with oilseed radish and corn with brachiaria) and fallow area (spontaneous plants). In the spring/summer season, soybean was cultivated. The biomass produced in the autumn/winter season varies with the species and cultivation system adopted. Soybean yield is higher when cultivated in succession to brachiaria, while the worst performance is obtained in succession to spontaneous plants. The cultivation of wheat in the winter and soybeans in the summer presents superior economic performance.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of aging and cementation of fiber posts using glass ionomer and resin cements on push-out bond strength, failure mode, and resin tag formation. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were used. After post-space preparation, the specimens were randomly allocated into 12 groups (n = 10) according to the cementation system used: GC - GC Gold Label Luting & Lining); RL - RelyX Luting 2; MC - MaxCem Elite; RU - RelyX U200 and the aging periods (24 hours, 6 months, and 12 months). Slices from the cervical, middle, and apical thirds were obtained and analyzed by push-out bond strength test and confocal laser scanning microscopy. One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%. For the push-out bond strength test, no differences among GC, RU, and MC in the cervical and middle thirds were observed, regardless of the period of storage (P > 0.05). In the apical third, GC and RU showed similar bond strength but higher than other groups (P > 0.05). After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength (P < 0.05). Bond strength to post-space dentin decreased over time, regardless of the cementation system used. Cohesive failure was the most frequent, regardless of the period of storage, cementation system, and post-space third. Tag formation was similar among all groups. After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength values.

Resumo Avaliar o efeito do envelhecimento e sistemas de cimentação usando ionômero de vidro e cimentos resinosos na resistência de união à dentina após a cimentação do pino de fibra. Cento e vinte incisivos bovinos foram utilizados. Após o preparo do pós-espaço, os corpos de prova foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em 12 grupos (n = 10) de acordo com o período de envelhecimento (24 horas, 6 meses e 12 meses) e o sistema de cimentação utilizado: GC - cimento de ionômero de vidro (GC Gold Label Cimentação e Revestimento); RL - RelyX Luting 2; MC - MaxCem Elite; RU - RelyX U200. Cortes dos terços cervical, médio e apical foram obtidos e analisados por teste de resistência de união push-out e microscopia confocal de varredura a laser. ANOVA one-way e teste de Tukey foi usado a um nível de significância de 5%. Para o teste de resistência de união, não foram observadas diferenças entre GC, RU e MC nos terços cervical e médio, independentemente do período de armazenamento (P > 0,05). No terço apical, GC e RU apresentaram resistência de união semelhante, porém superior aos demais grupos (P > 0,05). Após 12 meses, o GC apresentou a maior resistência de união (P < 0,05). A resistência de união à dentina no espaço para pino diminuiu ao longo do tempo, independentemente do sistema de cimentação utilizado. A formação de tags foi semelhante entre todos os grupos. Após 12 meses, o GC apresentou os maiores valores de resistência de união.

ABSTRACT Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) published in 2020 the updated recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Since then, new data have emerged in the literature, including new drugs approved for the systemic treatment of HCC that were not available at the time. The SBH board conducted an online single-topic meeting to discuss and review the recommendations on the systemic treatment of HCC. The invited experts were asked to conduct a systematic review of the literature on each topic related to systemic treatment and to present the summary data and recommendations during the meeting. All panelists gathered together for discussion of the topics and elaboration of the updated recommendations. The present document is the final version of the reviewed manuscript containing the recommendations of SBH and its aim is to assist healthcare professionals, policy-makers, and planners in Brazil and Latin America with systemic treatment decision-making of patients with HCC.

RESUMO O carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC) é uma das principais causas de mortalidade relacionada a câncer no Brasil e no mundo. A Sociedade Brasileira de Hepatologia (SBH) publicou em 2020 a atualização das recomendações da SBH para o diagnóstico e tratamento do CHC. Desde então, novas evidências científicas sobre o tratamento sistêmico do CHC foram relatadas na literatura médica, incluindo novos medicamentos aprovados que não estavam disponíveis na época do último consenso, levando a diretoria da SBH a promover uma reunião monotemática on-line para discutir e rever as recomendações sobre o tratamento sistêmico do CHC. Um grupo de experts foi convidado para realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura e apresentar uma atualização, baseada em evidências científicas, sobre cada tópico relacionado ao tratamento sistêmico e a apresentar os dados e recomendações resumidas durante a reunião. Todos os painelistas se reuniram para discutir os tópicos e elaborar as recomendações atualizadas. O presente documento é a versão final do manuscrito revisado, contendo as recomendações da SBH, e seu objetivo é auxiliar os profissionais de saúde, formuladores de políticas e planejadores no Brasil e na América Latina na tomada de decisões sobre o tratamento sistêmico de pacientes com CHC.

ABSTRACT The application of silicon (Si) in plants benefits the performance of several species. However, the dynamics of the element, mainly in non-accumulating species such as tomatoes, are rarely analyzed. This study investigated the dynamics of Si in tomato plants cultivated under different forms of application and water conditions. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with four replications, using a factorial scheme 2 x 4: two water conditions (60 and 100% of the evapotranspiration of the crop - ETc), and four forms of silicon application (without application, full dose applied at soil, split dose applied at soil, and foliar application). Si content in the soil and in the different plant organs were analyzed. Si content in the soil increased after the crop cycle depending on the application form (full or split doses). The dynamics of Si accumulation and extraction by tomato are influenced by the application form (higher in soil application) and water management, with fruits and leaves having the higher values. Si application, mainly in the soil, increased the rate of Si accumulation and extraction by tomatoes cultivated in different water conditions.

RESUMO A aplicação de silício em plantas ocasiona benefícios no desempenho de diversas espécies. Entretanto, a dinâmica do elemento, principalmente em plantas de espécies não acumuladoras como o tomate, é pouco analisada. O estudo teve como objetivo analisar a dinâmica do silício no cultivo do tomate em diferentes condições hídricas e formas de aplicação do elemento. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições, adotando esquema fatorial 2 x 4: duas condições de reposição hídrica (60 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc), quatro formas de aplicação de silício (sem aplicação, aplicação no solo de dose total, aplicação no solo de dose parcelada e aplicação foliar). Foi analisado o teor de silício no solo e nos componentes vegetais do tomateiro. O teor de silício no solo após o cultivo foi elevado em função da aplicação do elemento, em dose total ou parcelada. A dinâmica de acúmulo e extração do silício pelo tomateiro é influenciada pelo manejo hídrico e pela forma de aplicação do elemento, sendo as maiores taxas no fruto e na folha. A aplicação do elemento, principalmente no solo, elevou a taxa de acúmulo e extração do silício pelo tomateiro cultivado em diferentes condições de reposição hídrica.

ABSTRACT. Growing conditions such as water supply and soil fertility influence oregano morphological development and physiological responses. Our study aimed to analyse the physiological responses of oregano plants grown under different water conditions and bokashi application rates. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse under a randomized block design and a 3 x 4 factorial scheme. Treatments encompassed three water replacement levels (60, 80, and 100% crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and four bokashi rates (0, 100, 200, and 300 g m-2), with five replications each. Oregano seedlings were transplanted and grown in a spacing of 0.3 m between plants and 1 m between bed rows. After 60 days, treatments were evaluated for photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (Gs), internal CO2 rate (Ci), transpiration (E), and water-use efficiency (WUE). Data underwent variance analysis by F-teste, multivariate analysis, and Pearson's linear correlation. Oregano physiological responses were significantly influenced by water replacement level and the application rate of fermented bokashi compost. The multivariate analysis allowed us to analyse the interaction effect between water replacement level and bokashi rate on photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, internal CO2, and transpiration.

ABSTRACT The increase in inflammatory markers associated with persistent chronic fibrosing myocarditis, a characteristic of chronic Chagas disease, can result in a reduction in inspiratory muscle strength (IMS) in Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC). However, literature in this field is still scarce. This review aimed to map and summarize the evidence regarding IMS in patients with CC. The inclusion criteria included reports with adult participants with a CC diagnosis, with or without heart failure (HF). The core concept examined was the maximum inspiratory pressure evaluated in the untrained and trained groups in the pre-training period. The context was open, including but not limited to hospitals and health centers. Two authors independently identified eligible studies and extracted the data. Descriptive synthesis was used as the primary strategy for analyzing the results. Nine studies (five clinical trials, three cross-sectional, and one cohort) were included. The CC classification differed among the studies, with no mention of HF in five and no CC staging specification in six. IMS was assessed using a manovacuometer, and only six studies analyzed and interpreted the data concerning the predicted values. The CC population with HF appeared to have impaired IMS. All studies involved only Brazilian volunteers. In conclusion, randomized clinical trials evaluating IMS and the effects of inspiratory muscle training need to be conducted to better understand the prevalence and risk of inspiratory muscle weakness in the CC population, as well as the effects of training. Such studies should be conducted at different stages of CC in different populations and countries.

Abstract Prolonged exposure to environmental conditions such as ultraviolet radiation, humidity, and temperature, to which carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer components are exposed during their service life, can lead to significant changes in mechanical, physical, and chemicals properties, and can often be irreversible, resulting in premature component failure. This study presents the influence of accelerated weathering exposure times (400 h, 800 h, and 1200 h) on the mechanical, thermal, and structural properties of carbon fiber (CF)/polyamide 6 (PA6) laminates. Analyses of composite surfaces were carried out using microscopy and contact angle measurements, which indicated that the factors of exposure to accelerated only affected the surface of the composites, showing signs of the beginning of degradation. The tensile strength (609 MPa ± 10 MPa) and interlaminar shear strength (27 MPa ± 0.9 MPa) did not present significant changes, showing that the reinforcement, the matrix, and the interface remained stable after exposure to accelerated.

ABSTRACT The scientificity of the social management field (SM) has been constructed and validated in the Brazilian academy. It is positioned based on empirical evidence and a theoretical construction since the 1990s. In addition, the research developed under the aegis of SM has been guided by dialogues with different topics and areas of knowledge. Thus, this article presents an integrated synthesis of the articles available in the SPELL database, between 2010 and 2020. The evolution of SM was analyzed as a field of knowledge, exploring concepts, theoretical categories, epistemological and ontological assumptions, and theoretical references. When analyzing the categories and theoretical approaches of SM, the public sphere, social space, participation, cooperation, cooperativism, decentralization, solidarity economy, corporate sustainability, public governance, and social innovation were identified. Regarding the analysis of the epistemological and ontological assumptions of the field, it was possible to perceive a considerable multiplicity of approaches: Habermas critical theory, structuring theory, coloniality of power, ecology, Maffesolian sociology, sociologies of absences and emergencies by Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Putnam’s fact vs. value dichotomy, strategy as practice and decoloniality. As a result, the field’s effort to resolve inconsistencies and misunderstandings that invalidate its practice is clear. In addition, the urgency of carrying out the actions proposed by SM is evident, since the current mainstream model reinforces and elevates social disparities between groups, preventing the common good.

RESUMEN El campo de conocimiento de la gestión social (GS), cuya cientificidad ha sido construida y validada en la academia brasileña, se posiciona por medio de la evidencia empírica y una construcción teórica desde la década de 1990. Además, las investigaciones desarrolladas bajo la égida de la GS se han guiado por diálogos con diferentes temas y áreas de conocimiento. Así, este artículo presenta una síntesis integrada de los artículos disponibles en la base de datos Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library (SPELL), en el período de 2010 a 2020. Se analizó la evolución de la GS como campo de conocimiento, explorando conceptos, categorías teóricas, supuestos epistemológicos y ontológicos y referentes teóricos. Al analizar las categorías y enfoques teóricos de la GS se identificaron la esfera pública, el espacio social, la participación, cooperación, cooperativismo, descentralización, economía solidaria, sostenibilidad empresarial, gobernanza pública e innovación social. En cuanto al análisis de los presupuestos epistemológicos y ontológicos del campo, fue posible percibir una multiplicidad considerable de enfoques: teoría crítica habermasiana, teoría de la estructuración, colonialidad del poder, ecología, sociología maffesoliana, sociologías de las ausencias y de las emergencias de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, dicotomía hecho-valor de Putnam, la estrategia como práctica y decolonialidad. Como resultado, es claro el esfuerzo del campo por resolver las inconsistencias y malentendidos que invalidan su práctica. Además, se evidencia la urgencia de llevar a cabo las acciones propuestas por la GS, ya que el modelo actual de la corriente principal refuerza y eleva las disparidades sociales entre grupos, impidiendo la realización del bien común.

RESUMO O campo de conhecimentos da gestão social (GS), cuja cientificidade vem sendo construída e validada na academia brasileira, posiciona-se por meio de evidências empíricas e de uma construção teórica desde a década de 1990. Além disso, as pesquisas desenvolvidas sob a égide da GS têm se pautado em interlocuções com diversos temas e áreas de conhecimento. Assim, o presente artigo apresenta uma síntese integrada dos artigos disponibilizados na base de dados Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library (SPELL), entre o período de 2010 a 2020. Analisou-se a evolução da GS, enquanto campo de conhecimentos, explorando conceitos, categorias teóricas, pressupostos epistemológicos e ontológicos e referenciais teóricos. Quando analisadas as categorias e aproximações teóricas da GS, foram identificados a esfera pública, o espaço social, a participação, a cooperação, o cooperativismo, a descentralização, a economia solidária, a sustentabilidade empresarial, a governança pública e a inovação social. No que tange à análise dos pressupostos epistemológicos e ontológicos do campo, foi possível perceber uma multiplicidade considerável de abordagens: teoria crítica habermasiana, teoria da estruturação, colonialidade de poder, ecologia, sociologia maffesoliana, sociologias das ausências e emergências de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, dicotomia fato × valor de Putnam, estratégia como prática e decolonialidade. Como resultado, fica claro o esforço do campo na resolução de incoerências e incompreensões que invalidam sua prática. Além disso, é manifesta a urgência das ações que a GS propõe, pois o modelo atual do mainstream reforça e eleva as disparidades sociais entre os grupos, impedindo a realização do bem comum.

Resumo Existe no Brasil uma linha de pesquisa consolidada que buscou identificar as proxies determinantes da agressividade fiscal das empresas listadas na B3. Contudo, nenhum desses estudos buscou identificar o instrumento utilizado pelas empresas brasileiras para realizar a agressividade fiscal. Portanto, esta pesquisa busca preencher essa lacuna ao demonstrar que a agressividade fiscal tem como fundamento a complexidade tributária brasileira que proporciona subsídios para evitar ou postergar o pagamento dos tributos. Além disso, este estudo é o primeiro estudo contábil a demonstrar que os parcelamentos especiais reduzem o valor presente dos tributos devidos pelos contribuintes incentivando-os à agressividade fiscal. Através dos fundamentos da Teoria dos Jogos, esta pesquisa demonstra o custo-benefício da agressividade fiscal na maximização do lucro da desobediência tributária. Foram examinadas as melhores decisões estratégicas no jogo da desobediência tributária diante da complexidade tributária e dos parcelamentos especiais vividos no Brasil. Verificou-se nesse jogo que o único equilíbrio de NASH é a desobediência tributária uma vez que é a única opção com alguma chance de remuneração. Portanto, esta pesquisa contribui substancialmente para compreensão do comportamento empresarial diante das características tributárias brasileiras, bem como fornece subsídios para incentivar uma reforma tributária que reduz a complexidade tributária atual. Abstract A consolidated research line in Brazil identified the proxies for determining the tax aggressiveness of companies listed on the B3 stock exchange. However, none of these studies identified the instrument used by Brazilian companies to carry out tax aggressiveness. Thus, our research seeks to fill this gap by demonstrating that fiscal aggressiveness results from the Brazilian tax complexity, that providing prerogatives to avoid or delay tax payments. Besides, this study is the first accounting study to demonstrate that special installments reduce the actual value of taxes owed by taxpayers, encouraging them to be tax aggressive. Through the foundations of Game Theory, this research demonstrates the cost-benefit of tax aggressiveness in maximizing the profit of tax avoidance. We examined the best strategic decisions in the tax avoidance game concerning the tax complexity and special installments experienced in Brazil. In this game, the only NASH equilibrium is tax avoidance since it is the only option with a chance of remuneration. Therefore, this research contributes to understanding business behavior concerning the Brazilian tax system and provides subsidies to encourage reform of the current tax complexity. RESUMO O consórcio de hortaliças apresenta melhor aproveitamento dos recursos naturais, água, luz e nutrientes quando manejados corretamente. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho das culturas de alface e rabanete em sistema de monocultivo e consórcio submetidas a lâminas de água. O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente protegido na Universidade Estadual de Maringá em Maringá – PR. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, fatorial 4 x 2, com quatro repetições. O primeiro fator consistiu de quatro lâminas de água (60; 80; 100 e 120% da ETc) e o segundo fator de dois sistemas de cultivo (monocultivo e consórcio). O sistema de irrigação utilizado foi gotejamento e o manejo efetuado por lisímetros de lençol freático constante. As variáveis avaliadas da cultura de alface foram: massa fresca da parte aérea, massa seca da raiz e área foliar. Para cultura do rabanete avaliou-se: massa fresca total, massa fresca da raiz e diâmetro da raiz. E para ambas as culturas: produtividade, eficiência na utilização da água e índice de uso eficiente da superfície da terra. A massa fresca da parte aérea, área foliar e produtividade da alface, bem como, a massa fresca total, massa fresca da raiz e produtividade do rabanete aumentaram conforme incremento das lâminas de água aplicadas. A massa fresca total, massa fresca da raiz, diâmetro da raiz e produtividade do rabanete foram superiores no consórcio. A eficiência da utilização da água de ambas as culturas foi superior no monocultivo e o índice de uso eficiente da superfície da terra foi superior no consórcio.

ABSTRACT Vegetables intercropping of results in a better use of natural resources, water, light, and nutrients, when properly managed. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of lettuce and radish in single crop and intercropping systems under different irrigation water depths. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment at the State University of Maringá, in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. A randomized block experimental design was used in a 4×2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The first factor consisted of four irrigation water depths (60%, 80%, 100%, and 120% ETc), and the second factor consisted of two crop systems (single crop and intercrop). A drip irrigation system was used, consisting of constant water table lysimeters. The variables evaluated were: shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, and leaf area for the lettuce crop; total fresh weight, root fresh weight, and root diameter for the radish crop; and yield, water use efficiency, and land use efficiency index for both crops. Shoot fresh weight, leaf area, and yield of lettuce, and total fresh weight, root fresh weight, and yield of radish increased as the irrigation water depth applied was increased. Total fresh weight, root fresh weight, root diameter, and yield of the radish crop were higher in the intercropping system. The water use efficiency of both crops was higher in the single crop, and the land use efficiency index was higher in the intercropping system.

Abstract Background: Right ventricular dysfunction is a major complication in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and, despite its prognostic implications, is rarely considered in routine clinical analysis. Objectives: To compare RV function variables with standard and advanced echocardiographic techniques in patients with stable COPD and controls. Methods: Twenty COPD patients classified as GOLD ≥ II (13 men aged 68.4 ± 8.3 years) and 20 matched controls were compared. Myocardial strain/strain rate indices were obtained by tissue Doppler and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography. Right ventricular ejection fraction was obtained with three-dimensional software. Free wall myocardial thickness (FWMT) and tricuspid annular systolic excursion (TAPSE) were also measured. Numerical variables were compared between groups with Student’s t-test or the Mann-Whitney test. Associations between categorical variables were determined with Fisher’s exact test. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: All myocardial deformation indices, particularly global longitudinal strain (-17.2 ± 4.4 vs -21.2: ± 4.4 = 0.001) and 3D right ventricular ejection fraction (40.8 ± 9.3% vs 51.1 ± 6.4% p <0.001) were reduced in COPD patients. These patients presented higher right ventricular FWMT and lower TAPSE values than controls. Conclusion: Myocardial deformation indices, either tissue Doppler or speckle tracking echocardiography and 3D right ventricular ejection fraction, are robust markers of right ventricular dysfunction in patients with stable COPD. Assessing global longitudinal strain by speckle tracking echocardiography is a more practical and reproducible method.

Resumo A propagação seminífera de Dietes bicolor é dificultada pela provável dormência física e/ou morfofisiológica. Objetivou-se analisar a eficácia de diferentes métodos de superação de dormência em sementes de D. bicolor a fim de determinar possível tratamento pré-germinativo para a espécie. Foram realizados dois experimentos: (I) Avaliação da quebra de dormência física, em que os tratamentos de escarificação mecânica utilizando-se lixa nº 100; escarificação química com ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) por 5 e 10 minutos e imersão em água quente (70 ºC), também, em 5 e 10 minutos foram avaliados. A semente intacta foi considerada testemunha. (II) Avaliação da dormência morfofisiológica, no qual as sementes foram submetidas a tratamentos combinados de estratificação de temperaturas quentes (20-35 °C) e/ou temperatura fria (9 ºC), distribuídas nos períodos de 0, 1 e 2 semanas, totalizando 9 tratamentos. Em ambos os experimentos se determinou a porcentagem de germinação (G), índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e primeira contagem (PC), utilizando-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados e avaliados pelo teste de Scott-Knott a 1% e Dunnett à 5%. O uso H2SO4 por 10 minutos induziu 42% de germinação, 0,52 de índice de velocidade de germinação e 18% de primeira contagem, todavia somente PC mostrou-se significativamente distinto em relação à testemunha. No segundo ensaio, o tratamento que passou somente duas semanas em temperatura (20-35 ºC) apresentou a maior germinação (30%), em relação à testemunha (G = 22%). Esses resultados constituem informações relevantes para a compreensão da fisiologia da germinação de D. bicolor, além de contribuir com a otimização de práticas pré-germinativas para essa importante espécie ornamental.

Abstract Seminiferous propagation of Dietes bicolor is hindered by the probable physical and/or morphophysiological dormancy. The objective was to analyze the efficacy of different methods of overcoming dormancy in D. bicolor seeds to determine a possible pre-germination treatment for the species. Two experiments were conducted: (I) Evaluation of the breaking of physical dormancy, in which the treatments of mechanical scarification were carried using sandpaper #100; chemical scarification with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 5 and 10 minutes and immersion in hot water (70 ºC), also, for 5 and 10 minutes, were evaluated. The intact seed was considered a control. (II) Evaluation of morphophysiological dormancy, in which the seeds were submitted to combined treatments of stratification of hot temperature (20-35 °C) and/or cold temperature (9 ºC), distributed in periods of 0, 1, and 2 weeks, totalizing 9 treatments. In both experiments, germination percentage (G), germination speed index (GSI), and first count (FC) were determined, using a randomized block design, and evaluated by the Scott-Knott test at 1% and Dunnett’s test at 5%. The use of H2SO4 10 minutes induced 42% germination, 0.52 GSI, and 18% FC, but only FC was significantly different from the control. In the second trial, the treatment that spent only two weeks in hot temperatures (20-35 ºC) showed the highest germination (30%), compared to the control (G = 22%). These results provide relevant information for understanding the physiology of D. bicolor germination, in addition to contributing to the optimization of pre-germination practices for this important ornamental species.
