Abstract This research evaluated the effects of long-term (30 years) winter cover crops under conventional farming system and no-tillage system on edaphic fauna in a Rhodic Hapludox soil, from Paraná State, Brazil. We used three winter cover crops (black oat, hairy vetch and fallow), and as a reference a fragment of natural forest. Soil monoliths were collected at two times, one during the flowering of maize (April 2013) and the other during the flowering of soybean (January 2014). The extraction of the monoliths was carried out in three layers in the soil profile (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm). Seventeen taxonomic groups were sampled. The density of the edaphic fauna is inversely related to soil depth. The winter crops associated with the no-tillage system in long-term resulted in fauna densities similar to the natural environment, with a higher density (density increase of 2.2x) at a depth of 10-20 cm in areas with black oat. At 0-10 cm depth, black oat and vetch under no-tillage systems resulted in an increase of 62% and 69% (April 2013) and 46 and 44% (January 2014), respectively, in the density of soil fauna, when compared to the same winter crops in conventional farming system.

Solos com baixo teor de argila e matéria orgânica apresentam baixa disponibilidade de enxofre (S) e, por isso, as culturas podem responder à adubação sulfatada. No entanto, a mobilidade de S no perfil do solo e sua deposição atmosférica pela água da chuva dificultam o estabelecimento do nível de suficiência do nutriente no solo. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a resposta de culturas à adubação sulfatada e quantificar o S atmosférico depositado no solo pela água da chuva. Os cultivos avaliados (mamoneira, trigo, feijão-de-porco e milheto) foram realizados entre 2006 e 2009, em um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico arênico. As doses de S aplicadas em cada cultivo foram de 0, 5, 10 e 20 kg ha-1, utilizando-se gesso agrícola como fonte de S. Avaliaram-se a produção de matéria seca e o acúmulo de S na parte aérea do milheto e do feijão-de-porco, e a produção e o teor de S nos grãos de mamona e de trigo. Determinou-se o teor de S disponível no solo até 60 cm de profundidade e a deposição de S pelas precipitações. A maior produção de grãos da mamona e de matéria seca do segundo cultivo de feijão-de-porco foi obtida com aplicação de 14,5±0,35 kg ha-1 de S. Mesmo com teores de S abaixo dos níveis de suficiência, não houve respostas do trigo, do milheto e do primeiro cultivo de feijão-de-porco à adubação sulfatada. O aporte de S atmosférico ao solo foi de 4,5 kg ha-1 ano-1 e pode ter contribuído para a ausência de resposta desses cultivos.

Soils with low levels of clay and organic matter have low sulfur (S) availability. Therefore, crop yields may increase due to S fertilization. However, the mobility of S in the soil profile and its atmospheric deposition by rainwater make it difficult to establish the S sufficiency level in the soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of crops to S fertilization and quantify the S atmospheric deposition in the soil via rainwater. The cultivations evaluated (castor bean, wheat, jack bean and millet) were performed between 2006 and 2009 in a Hapludalf. The S doses applied in each cultivation were 0, 5, 10 and 20 kg ha-1, using gypsum as a S source. The dry matter production and S accumulation were evaluated the in the shoots of millet and jack bean, and production and the S content were evaluated in castor bean and wheat. We also determined the level of available S in the soil to a depth of 60 cm and the S deposition by rainfall. The highest grain yield of castor bean and the highest dry matter yield in the second cultivation of jack bean were obtained with the application of 14.5±0.35 kg ha-1 S. Even with S content below the sufficiency levels, there was no response of wheat, millet and the first crop of jack bean to the S fertilization. The atmospheric input of S to the soil was 4.5 kg ha-1 year-1 and it may have contributed to the no response of these crops.

Em solos com baixos teores de argila e matéria orgânica pode haver menor disponibilidade de enxofre (S) e, por esse motivo, espera-se que a adubação sulfatada incremente a produção das culturas. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a resposta de culturas e a disponibilidade de S em solos com diferentes teores de argila e matéria orgânica, submetidos à adubação sulfatada. O experimento foi realizado em vasos em casa de vegetação no período de agosto de 2004 até janeiro de 2008. Foram realizados nove cultivos sucessivos de plantas em quatro tipos de solos, submetidos à aplicação de quatro doses de S. Avaliou-se a produção de matéria seca e o acúmulo de S na parte aérea das plantas e o teor do elemento disponível no solo das camadas 0 - 10 e 10 - 20 cm. As plantas do primeiro cultivo de milho e aveia preta aumentaram a produção de matéria seca com a aplicação de S, mas o aumento da produção do milho não teve relação com os teores de S disponível da camada 0 - 10 cm nos solos arenosos. Mesmo com teores de S disponível nessa camada abaixo dos níveis de suficiência, não houve resposta do girassol, feijão, soja e mamona à adubação sulfatada. A quantidade de S acumulada na parte aérea das plantas e o teor de S disponível no solo aumentaram com a aplicação do nutriente. Grande parte do S migrou para a camada de 10 - 20 cm, especialmente nos solos arenosos e, assim, o diagnóstico da sua disponibilidade deve ser realizado nas camadas subsuperficiais do solo.

Soils with low levels of clay and organic matter frequently had shown low sulfur (S) availability. Therefore, increases in crop yields trough sulfated fertilizations are expected. The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of crops and the S availability in soils with different contents of clay and organic matter submitted to sulfated fertilization. The experiment was carried out in pots in a greenhouse during the period from August 2004 to January 2008. Nine successive crops were cultivated in four classes of soils submitted to the application of four S levels. Dry matter yield and S accumulation in the shoot were evaluated. Soil samples from the soil layers of 0 - 10 cm and 10 - 20 cm were collected to quantify the available S content. Only the first cultivation of corn and black-oat increased the shoot dry matter yields due to sulfated fertilization. Besides, there was no relation between corn yield increases and the levels of available S from the soil layer of 0 - 10 cm in sandy soils. Even when the available S content in the soil layer of 0-10 cm was lower than the critical levels, no sulfate fertilization responses were observed when sunflower, bean, soybean and castor bean were cultivated. The amount of S accumulated in the shoots and the level of available S increased due to S fertilization. A large amount of sulfate also migrated to the soil layer of 10 - 20 cm, especially in sandy soils, and therefore, the diagnosis of S availability should be made in the subsurface soil layers.

No meio rural, a água de consumo humano é frequentemente captada por meio de sistemas precários. O objetivo do trabalho foi o de monitorar parâmetros físicos, químicos e microbiológicos da qualidade de água subterrânea captada em fontes para uso doméstico, relacionando suas posições na paisagem e à presença de proteção física. Trinta e cinco fontes de água subterrânea, localizadas na pequena bacia hidrográfica-PBH do Arroio Lino, área rural do Município de Agudo - RS, foram amostradas e classificadas quanto à proteção física e à posição na paisagem. Monitoraram-se, de janeiro a agosto de 2002, os seguintes parâmetros da água: pH, cor, carbono orgânico solúvel total (COST), N-NO3, N-NH3 e fósforo total (PT), Escherichia coli e coliformes totais. Em geral, os parâmetros variaram com a época de coleta, ficando ora acima, ora abaixo dos Valores Máximos Permissíveis previstos pelo Ministério da Saúde do Brasil. A posição das fontes nas cotas mais altas da paisagem da PBH mostrou-se determinante unicamente para a cor e o PT. A proteção rudimentar mostrou-se eficaz para o PT nas fontes posicionadas em cotas altas, no entanto apresentou respostas discrepantes na parte baixa da paisagem, considerando-se os parâmetros COST e N-NO3. A fonte drenada coletiva, sistema recomendado pela assistência técnica oficial, mostrou-se a mais eficaz em evitar a contaminação por Escherichia coli, restringindo também coliformes totais, fósforo total e N-NO3 em relação à fonte individual. A posição das fontes na paisagem e a presença de proteção física rudimentar podem ser utilizadas como critério parcial ao uso de fontes para captação de água.

In rural areas, water for human consumption is often captured by insecure systems. The objective of this work was monitoring some parameters of the quality of groundwater taken from sources, pointing out their position in the landscape and the presence of physical protection. For this , 36 sources in the watershed of Arroio Lino, a rural area of Agudo, RS, Brazil, were sampled and classified according their physical protection and position in the landscape. A monitoring program, from January to August 2002, was carried out to analyze the following parameters: pH, color, total soluble organic carbon - TSOC, N-NO3, N-NH3 and total phosphorus, E. coli and total coliforms. The parameters values changed with the time of collection and were often above the Maximum Allowable values provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. A rudimentary protection was efficient to the PT of the sources located in high levels; however it has present discrepant results for the low part of the landscape, considering the parameters TSOC e N-NO3. The collective drained source, system recommended by the official technical assistance, was the most efficient to avoid contamination by Escherichia coli, restricting also the levels of total coliforms, total phosphorus and N-NO3 as compared to the individual sources. The sources position in the landscape and the presence of a rudimentary physical protection can be employed as a partial criterion to accept that a water source be used for collecting water.

In this work the exposure of wells and surface water to pesticides, commonly used for tobacco cropping, was assessed. Water consumption wells and surface water flows were sampled at different times. After a preconcentration step with solid phase extraction (SPE), the selected pesticides were determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) or high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). No pesticides were detected in the well water samples and surface water flow in the winter season. However, in the spring and summer higher concentrations of chlorpyrifos and imidacloprid were found in the water source samples. Atrazine, simazine and clomazone were also found. The occurrence of pesticides in collected water samples was related with the application to tobacco.

Realizou-se este trabalho com o intuito de quantificar a presença de moléculas de agrotóxicos em águas superficiais de três unidades paisagísticas (UP) com diferentes configurações de uso, numa microbacia hidrográfica de cabeceira em Agudo, RS. Dois coletores semi-automáticos de água foram instalados no córrego de cada UP, onde se coletaram amostras, por ocasião de chuvas, em três épocas da cultura do fumo: transplante, aterramento junto aos pés da cultura (planta com 6-10 folhas) e colheita. Os princípios ativos imidacloprid, atrazina, simazina e clomazone foram quantificados por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência com Detecção no Ultravioleta (HPLC-UV). Clorpirifós, flumetralin e iprodione foram analisados por Cromatografia Gasosa com Detecção por Captura de Elétrons (GC-ECD), porém não apresentaram concentrações detectáveis nas amostras. Os pontos de coleta cuja UP se configurou com a presença de lavouras com fumo e de reduzida mata ciliar, mostraram pelo menos um princípio ativo de agrotóxico e em uma época; contudo, nenhum agrotóxico foi detectado na UP, que se apresentou totalmente coberta com vegetação permanente ou com expressiva proteção dos córregos pela mata ciliar.

This work was accomplished with the intention of quantifying the presence of pesticide molecules in surface waters of three landscape units (LU) with different usage configurations in the Agudo watershed of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two semiautomatic water collectors were installed at the stream of each LU, from which samples were collected during rain over three stages of the tobacco growing season: seedling transplant, tobacco plants with 6-10 expanded leaves, and at harvest. Imidacloprid, atrazine, simazine, and clomazone compounds were quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Ultraviolet Detector (HPLC-UV). Chlorpyrifos, flumetralin and iprodione were analyzed by Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD), but these compounds were not detected in the samples. The sampling points where the LU was configured with both the presence of tobacco crops and reduced gallery forest, showed at least one pesticide compound in a sampling time. No pesticide was detected in the LU, which is completely covered with permanent vegetation or with gallery forest protecting the water courses.

Sem respeitar sua capacidade de suporte aliado à utilização maciça de agroquímicos, o uso agrícola do solo vem comprometendo a qualidade da água superficial. Neste trabalho, teve-se por objetivo monitorar a qualidade da água do dreno principal de uma microbacia hidrográfica (MBH) de cabeceira, situada em área predominantemente produtora de fumo e que utiliza intensamente agroquímicos e manejo convencional. A MBH está localizada no distrito de Nova Boêmia, em Agudo, RS. Coletaram-se amostras para análise em quatro pontos representativos do arroio, nos primeiros oito meses de 2002 e se analisaram, nas amostras de água, parâmetros microbiológicos, físicos e químicos; em um dos pontos avaliou-se a vazão e o transporte de sedimentos durante um evento chuvoso. As maiores concentrações de poluentes ocorreram nas águas coletadas nos pontos de maior influência de lavouras e estabelecimentos rurais. Os meses mais chuvosos coincidiram com as maiores contaminações microbiológicas, principalmente por coliformes fecais, enquanto os resultados mostraram que a água do arroio apresentou concentração de fósforo muito acima do padrão da classe 3 do CONAMA (1986).

The agricultural over use of the soil and excessive application of agrochemicals affect water quality. The present work was carried out to monitor the water quality of the main drain of a watershed cropped predominantly by tobacco, with intense use of agrochemicals and cultivated under conventional tillage. The watershed is located in the district of Nova Boemia in Agudo (Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil). During first eight months of 2002, samples were collected at four representative points of the stream. Microbiological and physiochemical parameters were analyzed. At are of the prints, the water flow and sediment transport was evaluated during a rain event. The greatest concentration of pollutants occurred in the sample collected at the points of intense farming influence and rural establishments. The most rainy months coincided with the greatest biological contaminations, mainly by fecal coliforms. The results showed that watershed water show phosphorus contents very high compared to standards of class 3 of CONAMA (1986).
