Abstract Vascular epiphytes contribute significantly to the biodiversity of tropical forests. We aimed to identify the epiphyte species occurring in the Muriqui Trail at Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (SBSP), a priority area for Atlantic forest conservation in southeastern Brazil. We selected 10 phorophytes, from which we sampled epiphytes and took light intensity measurements at three strata: up to 4 m, 4 to 8 m, and above 8 m. Phorophytes represented eight species, eight genera, and six families. We found 25 epiphytic species from 17 genera and nine families. Ferns showed highest richness, especially Polypodiaceae. We report herein important data on epiphyte diversity in eastern Minas Gerais state (Zona da Mata), including the occurrence of species rarely cited in surveys. Fomenting local conservation along with environmental education may be pivotal for counteracting anthropic pressure on SBSP.

Resumo Hemoplasmas são bactérias epieritrocíticas que infectam mamíferos. ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemoalbiventris’ foi detectado previamente em gambás-de-orelha-branca (Didelphis albiventris) das regiões sul e centro-oeste do Brasil. O presente estudo objetivou: i) triar os gambás para as doenças transmitidas por carrapatos (Piroplasmida e Anaplasmataceae); e ii) detectar e caracterizar as espécies de hemoplasma que infectam gambás nas cidades de Curitiba e Foz do Iguaçu, no Estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil. Trinta amostras de sangue de gambás-de-orelha-branca foram analisadas por PCR. Os animais não estavam infestados por ectoparasitos. O gene endógeno de mamífero gapdh foi amplificado em todas as amostras. Todos os gambás testaram negativos para Theileria/Babesia spp. e Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp. por PCR, respectivamente, para os genes 18S rRNA e 16S rRNA. Uma PCR gene-específica, baseada no gene 16S rRNA de hemoplasmas, mostrou que três/13 (23,08%; CI 95%: 8,18-50,26%) gambás de Foz do Iguaçu foram positivos para Mycoplasma sp. hemotrópico. Todos os gambás de Curitiba testaram negativos para hemoplasmas. O sequenciamento de fragmentos dos genes 16S e 23S rRNA revelou que os animais estavam infectados pelo ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’. Embora ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’ seja prevalente em gambás no Brasil, os sinais clínicos associados à infecção e os prováveis vetores permanecem desconhecidos.

Abstract Hemoplasmas are epierythrocytic bacteria that infect mammals. ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemoalbiventris’ was detected in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from southern and central-western Brazil. The present study aimed at: i) screening opossums for tick-borne (TBP) pathogens (Piroplasmida and Anaplasmataceae) and ii) detecting and characterizing hemoplasma species infecting opossums from Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu cities in the Paraná State, southern Brazil. Thirty blood samples from white-eared opossums were evaluated by PCR assays. Animals were not infested by ectoparasites. The mammalian endogenous gapdh gene was consistently amplified in all samples. All opossums tested negative for Theileria/Babesia spp. and Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp. by PCR based on 18S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes, respectively. A genus-specific PCR assay based on the 16S rRNA gene of hemoplasmas showed that three/13 (23.08%; CI 95%: 8.18-50.26%) opossums from Foz do Iguaçu were positive for hemotropic Mycoplasma sp. All opossums from Curitiba tested negative for hemoplasmas. Sequencing of both the 16S and 23S rRNA genes revealed that the animals were infected by ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’. Although ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’ is prevalent in opossums in Brazil, clinical signs associated with its infection and its putative vectors remain unknown.

RESUMO: Este texto é o resultado de uma entrevista realizada, em junho de 2015, com o Dr. Pierre Parlebas, idealizador da Praxiologia Motriz. A entrevista se estruturou em três momentos e teve o objetivo de estabelecer as relações entre o conhecimento praxiológico e a organização do trabalho pedagógico e da didática na Educaçao Física. Iniciou-se questionando a respeito das características epistemológicas do conhecimento praxiológico. Em seguida, verificou-se como o professor situa o conhecimento praxiológico no campo da Educação Física. Finalizou-se a entrevista solicitando que o autor apresentasse as relações entre Praxiologia Motriz, Trabalho Pedagógico e Didática.

ABSTRACT: This article is the result of an interview with Dr. Pierre Parlebas Motor Praxeology creator. The interview took place on June of 2015 and its aim was to establish the relationship between the praxiological knowledge and organisation of pedagogical and didactic work in Physical Education. The interview was divided into three different parts. Firstly, we asked Dr. Pierre Parlebas about the epistemological characteristics of the praxiological knowledge. Secondly, we searched for answers to know how Parlebas places the praxiological knowledge in the field of Physical Education. Finally, we requested the author to explain the connections among Motor Praxeology, Pedagogical practice and Didactics.

RESUMEN: Este artículo es el resultado de una entrevista realizada con el Dr. Pierre Parlebas, creador de la praxiología motriz, que tuvo lugar en junio de 2015. La entrevista se estructuró en tres momentos y tuvo como objetivo establecer las relaciones entre el conocimiento praxiológico y la organización del trabajo pedagógico y didáctico en educación física. Empezamos por las características epistemológicas del conocimiento praxiológico. A continuación, buscamos saber cómo el profesor sitúa el conocimiento praxiológico en el campo de la educación física. Finalizamos la entrevista solicitando que el autor presentase el vínculo existente entre praxiología motriz, práctica pedagógica y didáctica.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the ethanolic crude extracts and fractions of the species Senecio westermanii Dusén on Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) and Allium cepa L. (onion) seeds. We assessed the germination, growth, root respiration and photosynthesis of the target species in Petri dishes (9.0 cm diameter) containing filter paper n°6. The study was conducted using 50 seeds per plate and held in 4 replicates per concentration of each sample. In the germination there was an inhibitory effect of fractions hexane (FH) and chloroform (FCl) at concentrations of 500 and 1000 µg/mL. There was a reduction in the radicle growth of lettuce by 14 to 24% and a reduction of hypocotilum by 14 to 28%. As for the radicle of the onion was up 74% reduction to the FCl and the coleoptile was 24 and 45% reduction for FH and FCl, respectively. Inhibitory effects in the root respiration of lettuce were detected in all the samples analyzed, with results ranging from 16 to 83%. For the seeds of A. cepa, there was an encouragement for the FCl and ethyl acetate fractions (FAE), with results ranging from 94 to 142% and 76 to 150%, respectively. With regard to the photosynthesis of L. sativa, there was no significant difference between the control, and as for the A. cepa, there was a strain in inhibition concentrations of 250 and 500 µg/mL, which ranged from 27 to 68%. The samples of S. westermanii caused changes in the target species and thus can be used as a natural herbicide.

ABSTRACT BKV and JCV belong to the Polyomaviridae family and are opportunistic agents associated with complications in immunocompromised individuals. Although a single screening assay for both viruses would be convenient, the diversity of BKV and JCV serotypes and genotypes is a methodological challenge. In this paper, we developed a PCR method able to detect and segregate BKV and JCV, despite these genetic discrepancies. A duplex semi-nested PCR (duplex snPCR) was designed to target a conserved region (639nt-1516nt) within the VP2 gene. In the first PCR, a primer set common to all BKV and JCV serotypes/ genotypes was used, followed by a semi-nested PCR with internal primers for BKV and JCV segregation. The limit of detection of the duplex snPCR was as low as 10 copies of BKV or JCV plasmids/μL. Specific products were observed when JCV and BKV plasmids were mixed in the same reaction. In field sample testing, the duplex snPCR detected and distinguished both viruses in different biological samples. Results were confirmed by Sanger's sequencing. The geographical complexity of BKV and JCV serotypes and genotypes imposes limits to a simple and universal method that could detect each virus. However, we describe here a sensitive and reliable PCR technique for BKV and JCV diagnosis that overcomes these limitations and could be universally applied.

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to investigate the association of EBV and HPV with gingivitis and/or periodontitis according to the immunologic status. To this end, 74 oral biopsies from transplanted and non-transplanted individuals with the abovementioned oral manifestations were submitted to a screening by PCR for both viruses. According to the results, EBV was strongly associated with gingivitis and/or periodontitis in transplanted individuals (p = 0.011) but not HPV (p = 0.766). EBV-HPV co-detections did not enhance the presence of tissue injury as well. Although a causal relationship was not investigated in this study, the higher frequency of these two oncoviruses in lesion tissues must be investigated in follow-up studies, especially among immunocompromised individuals.

Objectives:A cross-sectional study on prevalence of HBV and HDV infection, risk factors and genotype distribution of HBV infection was conducted among 848 HIV-infected patients in Mato Grosso do Sul, Central Brazil.Methods:Serum samples of 848 participants were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and hepatitis surface antibody (anti-HBs). HBsAg positive samples were tested for anti-HBc IgM, HBeAg, anti-HBe, anti-HCV, and total anti-HDV. HBsAg and anti-HBc positive were subjected to DNA extraction. Viral DNA was amplified by semi-nested PCR for the regions pre-S/S and then purified and genotyped/subgenotyped by direct sequencing. Student's t-test, chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to compare variables and to evaluate association between HBV positivity (defined as anti-HBc and/or HBsAg positivity) and risk factors.Results:Among the 848 HIV infected patients investigated 222 had serological markers of HBV infection. The prevalence rate of HIV-HBV coinfection was 2.5% (21/848; 95% CI: 1.4–3.5%); 484 (57.1%) patients were susceptible for HBV infection. There were no cases of anti-HDV positive and only one (0.1%) anti-HCV-positive case among the HIV-HBV coinfected patients. Male gender, increasing age, family history of hepatitis, use of illicit drug, and homosexual activity were independent factors associated with HBV exposure. The phylogenetic analysis based on the S gene region revealed the presence of genotypes D (76.9%), F (15.4%) and A (7.7%) in the study sample.Conclusion:This study demonstrates the low prevalence of HIV-HBV infection and also highlights the need for early vaccination against HBV as well as testing for HBV, HCV and HDV in all HIV-infected individuals.

INTRODUÇÃO: Dentre as incapacidades motoras da Doença de Parkinson (DP), as alterações posturais e de equilíbrio são parâmetros importantes para fisioterapeutas que necessitam escolher terapias específicas e direcionadas a seus pacientes. Dentre muitas opções de terapia para essa condição, a terapia virtual é estudada como um método viável para reabilitação. OBJETIVO: Verificar a aplicabilidade da reabilitação virtual em pacientes com DP para a melhora de seu equilíbrio e da qualidade de vida. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Seis voluntários, diagnosticados como portadores da DP nas fases II e III (escala de Hoehn e Yahr), foram recrutados para este estudo. Os pacientes (de 65 ± 13 anos) participaram de atividades envolvendo o Wii Fit, em um total de doze intervenções, duas vezes por semana. Métodos clínicos e qualitativos foram utilizados na coleta de dados para as avaliações iniciais e finais: escala de Borg, escala de equilíbrio funcional de Berg, time Up and Go, reação funcional anterior e lateral e escala de Nottingham foram aplicadas durante o estudo. Penguin Slide, Slalom Ski, Futebol e Inclinação da Mesa foram os jogos de Wii selecionados como forma de terapia virtual. RESULTADOS: Os dados coletados foram analisados utilizando o teste de Wilcoxon. Habilidade motora, capacidade funcional e qualidade de vida foram analisadas como variáveis de equilíbrio dos pacientes. Foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos seguintes testes: escala de Borg (p = 0.0464), escala de equilíbrio funcional de Berg (p = 0.0277), alcance lateral funcional à direita (p = 0.0431) e alcance lateral funcional à esquerda (p = 0.0277). CONCLUSÃO: Estima-se que os exercícios com terapia de realidade virtual podem ser uma ferramenta útil para melhorar o equilíbrio em pacientes com DP.

INTRODUCTION: Among Parkinson's disease (PD) motor disabilities, postural and balance alterations are important parameters to physical therapists who need to choose specific, targeted therapies for their patients. Among many therapy options, virtual therapy is studied as to whether it can be a viable rehabilitation method. OBJECTIVE: To verify the applicability of virtual rehabilitation in PD patients for the improvement of their balance and quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six volunteers, diagnosed to be in Stages II and III of PD (Hoehn and Yahr Scale), were recruited for this study. Patients (65 ± 13 years old) participated in activities involving Wii Fit, for a total of twelve interventions, twice per week. Clinical and qualitative methods were used for the data collection for the initial and final evaluations: Borg's Scale, Berg Functional Balance Scale, Time Up and Go, anterior and lateral functional reach and Nottingham's Scale were performed during the study. Penguin Slide, Ski Slalom, Soccer Heading and Table Tilt were the Wii games selected as a form of virtual therapy. RESULTS: The collected data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Motor skill, functional capacities and quality of life were analyzed as variables of the patients' balance. Statistically significant differences were found in the following tests: Borg's Scale (p = 0.0464), Berg Functional Balance Scale (p = 0.0277), lateral functional reach to the right (p = 0.0431*) and lateral functional reach to the left (p = 0.0277). CONCLUSION: It is believed that exercises with virtual reality therapy can be a useful tool to improve the balance in PD patients.

Neospora caninum é um protozoário que tem o cão como hospedeiro defiinitivo e, bovinos, ovinos, caprinos e equinos como hospedeiros intermediários. Nestas últimas espécies pode provocar abortos e infecções neonatais. Este trabalho é o primeiro relato de aborto em ovinos associado com N. caninum no Mato Grosso do Sul. Os dados epidemiológicos foram obtidos através de entrevistas com o proprietário dos animais. Quatro fetos foram necropsiados, dos quais foram colhidos fragmentos de diversos órgãos fiixados em formol a 10%, incluídos em parafiina, processados pela técnica usual de hematoxilina e eosina e também foi realizada imuno-histoquímica para N. caninum e Toxoplasma gondii. O surto ocorreu em um rebanho constituído por 268 ovinos da raça Santa Inês, destes 186 eram fêmeas prenhes, no terço fiinal de gestação e 10 abortaram. Dos quatro fetos analisados, três eram da mesma fêmea, sendo um de menor tamanho. À necropsia o pulmão de um dos fetos estava crepitante e todos os órgãos estavam avermelhados. Os achados histológicos foi infiiltrado mononuclear entre as fiibras do miocárdio e ao redor dos vasos, além de estruturas circulares compostas por pontilhados basofiílicos semelhantes a protozoários. A IHQ revelou marcação fortemente positiva para N. caninum e fracamente positiva para T. gondii, caracterizando infecção por N. caninum.

Canids are the main hosts of Neospora caninum, but cattle, (sheep, goats and horses may serve as intermediary hosts. N. caninum infection of pregnant intermediary hosts may provoke abortion and neonatal infections. This study is the first to report lamb abortion associated with N. caninum in Mato Grosso do Sul. Epidemiological data were obtained from interviews with sheep producers. For microscopic examination, fragments of different organs removed from 4 sheep fetuses, aborted and necropsied, were fixed in 10% formaldehyde, embedded in paraffin and subjected to the hematoxylin-eosin staining protocol and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to test for N. caninum and Toxoplasma gondii. The abortion outbreak studied was reported from a herd of 268 Santa Inês sheep (including 186 pregnant ewes), with 10 abortion cases in the last third of gestation. Four fetuses were examined, 3 from a same ewe. At necropsy, one fetus exhibited crackling in the lung and all its organs were reddish. Histological findings detected mononuclear cell infiltrates among myocardium fibers and around blood vessels, in addition to circular structures with basophilic points resembling protozoans. IHC tests revealed strongly positive staining for N. caninum and weakly positive for T. gondii, characterizing N. caninum infection.

A relação entre dinâmica da pobreza e inserção no mercado de trabalho compreende questões como o que direciona certos grupos pobres a escaparem desta condição e o que induz outros grupos a entrarem na po-breza. Buscando analisar essas questões, o objetivo geral deste artigo é investigar a relação entre mobilidade entre estados de pobreza e forma de inserção no mercado de trabalho no Brasil metropolitano em 2004. Para o acompanhamento longitudinal dos indivíduos na amostra, a fim de captar a mobilidade, foi utilizada a Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego (PME) 2004 como fonte dos dados. O modelo de mobilidade, ou de transição na pobreza, é baseado em uma matriz de Markov, utilizando como estratégia para estimação um modelo probit com seleção amostral. A partir da observação do processo de mobilidade nesse modelo, foram calculadas taxas de permanência e de transição para a pobreza, assim como outras medidas de mobilidade, para cada grupo de condição ocupacional. Os resultados evidenciam a relevância da inserção ocupacional para permanência em estados de não-pobreza e transições para fora da pobreza.

The relation between dynamics of poverty and labor market includes some issues as what conducts certain poor groups to escape of this condition and what induces other groups to enter in the poverty. Seeking to analyze these issues, the purpose of this article is to investigate the relation between poverty states and way of occupational conditions in the labor market in Brazilian metropolitan areas in 2004. To follow up individuals in the sample, in order to hold the mobility, the Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego (PME) 2004 was used as source of the database. The model of mobility, or poverty transition model, is based on a Markov matrix, using as strategy of estimating a probit model with sample selection. Observing the mobility process in this model, poverty permanence rates and poverty transition rates had been calculated, as well as other mobility measurements, for each group of occupational condition. The results point out the importance of labor market aspects to permanence in the non-poor state and transitions to out of poverty.

Estudos em humanos e em modelos experimentais demonstram que a serotonina (5-HT) participa da fisiopatologia da depressão. O presente estudo investigou o comportamento depressivo e a evolução ponderal de ratos adultos jovens (60 dias) tratados do 1º ao 21º dia pós-natal com fluoxetina, um inibidor seletivo de recaptação da serotonina, (10 mg/kg, sc, diariamente). A depressão experimental foi induzida através do teste de nado forçado (NF). Os animais foram submetidos a duas sessões de NF, a primeira por 15 min e a segunda após 24 h, por 5 min. Durante os 5 min de NF a latência da tentativa de fuga (LTF) e o tempo de imobilidade (TI) foram avaliados. O grupo tratado com fluoxetina apresentou aumento da LTF e redução do TI comparado ao controle. A administração neonatal de fluoxetina reduziu o comportamento depressivo em ratos adultos, possivelmente em função do aumento da atividade serotoninérgica cerebral. Esta alteração poderá estar relacionada a processos neuroadaptativos.

Serotonin plays a role at the pathophysiology of depression in humans and in experimental models. The present study investigated the depressive behavior and the weigh evolution in adult rats (60 days) treated from the 1st to the 21st postnatal day with fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (10 mg/kg, sc, daily). The depressive behavior was induced by the forced swim test (FST). The animals were submitted to two sessions of FST: 1st session for 15 min and the 2nd session 24h later, for 5 min. During the 2nd session the Latency of the Attempt of Escape (LAE) and Behavioral Immobility (BI) were appraised. The Fluoxetine group when compared to the Control group, showed an increase in LAE and a decrease in BI. The neonatal administration of fluoxetine reduced the depressive behavior in adult rats, possibly by increase in the brain serotonergic activity. This alteration can be associated to process of neuroadaptation.
