RESUMO O excesso de sais pode afetar diversos processos nas culturas, e o nitrogênio (N) pode atenuar o efeito depressivo da salinidade. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência de doses de nitrogênio no crescimento e nas trocas gasosas da cultura do milho irrigado com água salina. O experimento foi conduzido no período de junho a setembro de 2019, na Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, Redenção, CE. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2 x 3 água de abastecimento de 0,3 dS m-1 e solução salina de 3,0 dS m-1, e três doses de nitrogênio, 0, 80 e 160 kg ha-1, correspondendo a 0, 50 e 100% da dose recomendada, respectivamente, com seis repetições. Aos 30 e 45 dias após a semeadura (DAS) foram avaliadas altura de planta, área foliar, número de folhas, fotossíntese, transpiração e a condutância estomática. O estresse salino afeta a altura de plantas, área foliar, fotossíntese, transpiração e a condutância aos 30 DAS. As doses de 80 e 160 kg ha-1 proporcionam maior desempenho em altura de plantas, área foliar, fotossíntese, transpiração e a condutância aos 30 DAS. O uso de água de baixa salinidade e as doses de 80 e 160 kg ha-1 foram mais eficientes quanto à altura de plantas, área foliar, fotossíntese, transpiração e a condutância aos 45 DAS. A dose de 160 kg ha-1 de N atenua os efeitos deletérios dos sais nas plantas de milho híbrido AG 1051 proporcionando maiores valores de fotossíntese, transpiração e condutância estomática aos 45 DAS, quando irrigadas com água de 3,0 dS m-1.
ABSTRACT The excess of salts can affect several processes in the crops, and nitrogen (N) can attenuate the depressive effect of salinity. The objective was to evaluate the influence of nitrogen doses on the growth and gas exchange of corn crop irrigated with saline water. The experiment was conducted from June to September 2019 at the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony, Redenção, CE, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme (supply water of 0.3 dS m-1 and saline solution of 3.0 dS m-1) and three nitrogen doses, 0, 80, and 160 kg ha-1, corresponding to 0, 50, and 100% of the recommended dose respectively, with six repetitions. At 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS), plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance were evaluated. Saline stress affects plant height, leaf area, photosynthesis, transpiration, and conductance at 30 DAS. The doses of 80 and 160 kg ha-1 provide greater performance in plant height, leaf area, photosynthesis, transpiration, and conductance at 30 DAS. The use of low salinity water and doses of 80 and 160 kg ha-1 were more efficient in terms of plant height, leaf area, photosynthesis, transpiration, and conductance at 45 DAS. The dose of 160 kg ha-1 of N attenuates the harmful effects of salts in AG 1051 hybrid maize plants, providing higher values of photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance at 45 DAS when irrigated with water of 3.0 dS m-1.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is the largest pandemic in modern history with very high infection rates and considerable mortality. The disease, which emerged in China’s Wuhan province, had its first reported case on December 29, 2019, and spread rapidly worldwide. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic and global health emergency. Since the outbreak, efforts to develop COVID-19 vaccines, engineer new drugs, and evaluate existing ones for drug repurposing have been intensively undertaken to find ways to control this pandemic. COVID-19 therapeutic strategies aim to impair molecular pathways involved in the virus entrance and replication or interfere in the patients’ overreaction and immunopathology. Moreover, nanotechnology could be an approach to boost the activity of new drugs. Several COVID-19 vaccine candidates have received emergency-use or full authorization in one or more countries, and others are being developed and tested. This review assesses the different strategies currently proposed to control COVID-19 and the issues or limitations imposed on some approaches by the human and viral genetic variability.

Behavioral characterization and alternative control methods of the Bamboo borer [Dinoderus minutus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)]

ABSTRACT Bamboo wood is a widely used raw material for the manufacture of special furniture and handicraft products, and can also be used in construction and architecture. In Brazil, the usage of this material has gained great space in the last decades. However, it can suffer from the attack of the bamboo borer [Dinoderus minutus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)], causing damages and making the use of this wood unviable. Hence, the purpose of this work was to verify the behavior of D. minutus in culms of three bamboo species (Bambusa vulgaris, B. vulgaris var. vittata e B. multiplex) in two seasons of the year, one dry and one rainy season, in addition to testing alternative methods of insect control. In relation to the behavior, we verified the damages caused by the larvae from the oviposition of D. minutus in nodes and internodes of the bamboo species. While the alternative control methods were based on the spraying of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis, as an entomopathogenic agent, on B. vulgaris nodes, and the immersion treatment of nodes of same bamboo species in aqueous extract of Dracaena arborea leaves, and in vinasse. In relation to the insect behavior, there was a higher activity (consumption and reproduction) during the rainy season and a higher attack preference for the species B. vulgaris. Regarding the alternative control methods, it was verified a better performance of the treatments with P. mirabilis and D. arborea, since they provided a mortality index superior to 90% of the insects.
RESUMEN La madera de bambú es una materia prima ampliamente utilizada para la fabricación de muebles especiales y productos de arte sanía. Además es empleada en la construcción civil y arquitectura. En Brasil, el uso de este material ha aumentado en las últimas décadas. Sin embargo, puede sufrir el ataque del barrenador de bambú Dinoderus minutus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), causando daños e inutilizando la madera. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar el comportamiento de D. minutus en cañas de tres especies de bambú (Bambusa vulgaris, B. vulgaris var. vittata y B. multiplex) en dos estaciones del año, una seca y otra lluviosa, además de probar métodos alternativos de control de insectos. En relación con el comportamiento, verificamos los daños causados por las larvas a partir de la oviposición de D. minutus en nudos y entrenudos de las especies de bambú. Los métodos de control alternativos se basaron en la fumigación de la bacteria Proteus mirabilis, como agente entomopatógeno; en los nudos de B. vulgaris y el tratamiento de inmersión de nudos de la misma especie de bambú en extracto acuoso de hojas de Dracaena arborea y en vinaza. En relación con el comportamiento de los insectos, hubo una mayor actividad (consumo y reproducción) durante la temporada de lluvias y una mayor preferencia de ataque para la especie B. vulgaris. Respecto a los métodos de control alternativos, se verificó un mejor desempeño de los tratamientos con P. mirabilis y D. arborea, ya que proporcionaron un índice de mortalidad superior al 90% de los insectos.

The synthesis of efficient and reusable gold-based catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols is a strategy for the development of green processes. Pre-formed nanoparticles syntheses are an easy way to produce controlled-nanosized gold materials; however, the selection of a support is not trivial. Herein, we proposed a CoFe2O4 support enriched with Sr(OH)2, which holds remarkable properties and is suitable for the synthesis of a stable gold-based catalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. We suggested that the interaction between the CoFe2O4 and the Sr(OH)2 is highly important for the performance of the catalyst. Under the base-free condition of 2.5 h, 100 ºC and 2 bar of O2, the catalyst reached 58% of conversion with 76% of selectivity to benzaldehyde. With K2CO3 addition, the conversion and selectivity to benzaldehyde increased to 87% and 88%, respectively. Any gold leaching was detected in 5 successive runs, attesting the noticeable stability that the catalyst presents. This work provides great potential for the selective oxidation of alcohols with high activity since the magnetic properties of the catalyst provide an easy route and allows the separation of the medium reaction. In addition, we are here proposing an important interaction between the Sr(OH)2 and the magnetic nanoparticles.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Propôs-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar a indução de multibrotações nos genótipos de mamona BRS Nordestina e CSRN 142, no explante gema apical, determinando-se o melhor tratamento com o fitorregulador Tiadiazuron (TDZ) e indicar a concentração satisfatória do ácido-3-indolacético (AIA) para o enraizamento ex vitro. Utilizou-se o meio Murashige e Skoog, suplementado com TDZ nas concentrações 0 (testemunha) 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 5,0 e 10,0 mg L-1, com três explantes por frasco, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As avaliações foram realizadas após 45 dias de cultivo analisando-se o número de brotos por explante e a porcentagem de necrose. No enraizamento ex vitro fez-se uso do AIA, nas concentrações 0; 0,125; 0,25; 0,5 e 1,0 g L-1 e do substrato de aclimatação (turfa + vermiculita). Observou-se que a concentração de 0,5 mg L-1 de TDZ proporcionou a melhor proliferação in vitro, alcançando até 16,9 brotos por explante. No enraizamento ex vitro o tratamento mais promissor foi turfa + vermiculita + 0,125 g L-1 de AIA, com 75% de plantas enraizadas. Verificou-se que o TDZ induz o superbrotamento nos dois genótipos e o enraizamento ex vitro é uma alternativa viável aos programas de melhoramento vegetal.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness to induce the multiplication of shoots in the BRS Nordestina and CSRN 142 castor bean genotypes, in the explant apical meristem, determining the best treatment with the thidiazuron (TDZ) growth regulator and to indicate the satisfactory concentration of the indoleacetic acid (AIA) for the ex vitro rooting. The Murashige and Skoog medium, was used supplemented with TDZ in the concentrations 0 (control); 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0 e 10.0 mg L-1, with three explants per flask, in randomized blocks. The evaluations were made after 45 days of cultivation, being analyzed the number of brunches for explant and the percentage of necrosis. In the ex vitro rooting, the use of AIA was made, in the concentrations 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 g L-1 in the acclimatization substrate. It was observed that the concentration of 0.5 mg L-1 of TDZ provided the best results in vitro proliferation, reaching 16.9 brunch for explant. In the ex vitro rooting, the most promising treatment was substrate + 0.125 g L-1 of AIA, with 75% of rooted plants. It was verified that the TDZ induces the over brunching in the two genotypes and that the ex vitro rooting is a viable alternative for the programs of plants improvement.
