ABSTRACT Background: Women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (WLWH) are more likely to be infected with the oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV). We assessed the prevalence of high-risk (HR) (16/18/31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/68/73/82), probable high-risk (pHR) (26/53/66), and low-risk (LR) (6/11/40/42/43/44/54/61/70) HPV types and their associated risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study of WLWH aged 18-64 years included one laboratory and eight HIV-specialty healthcare facilities in the pilot network. Descriptive statistics were used to assess sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics. Adjusted analyses were conducted to evaluate risk factors associated with HR and/or pHR HPV infection in WLWH. Results: From May/2021 to May/2022, 1,914 (92.5%) WLWH participated in the pilot study and had valid HPV-DNA results of self-collected vaginal samples. The median age of the participants was 45 years, 60.1% had ≥ 9 years of schooling, 80.5% were ≤ 18 years at first sexual intercourse, and 51.7% had > 4 sexual partners throughout life. The prevalence of any HPV type, HR HPV, pHR HPV, and LR HPV was 65.8%, 49.6%, 16.7%, and 40.0%, respectively. Age was inversely associated with pHR and/or HR-HPV (p < 0.001), and education level was inversely associated with HR-HPV (p = 0.003) types. Any HR or pHR was associated with being single (p = 0.029) and exchanging sex for drugs (p = 0.037). Conclusions: The prevalence of HPV, especially HR HPV, among WLWH is high in Brazil, highlighting the need for HPV screening in this population. Self-collection of vaginal samples is an important strategy for increasing testing access.

Abstract INTRODUCTION HIV incidence estimates are essential to monitor the progress of prevention and control interventions. METHODS Data collected by Brazilian surveillance systems were used to derive HIV incidence estimates by age group (15-24; 25+) and sex from 1986 to 2018. This study used a back-calculation method based on the first CD4 count among treatment-naïve cases. Incidence estimates for the population aged 15 years or over were compared to Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) estimates from 2000 to 2018. RESULTS Among young men (15-24 years), HIV incidence increased from 6,400 (95% CI: 4,900-8,400), in 2000, to 12,800 (95% CI: 10,800-15,900), in 2015, reaching incidence rates higher than 70/100,000 inhabitants and an annual growth rate of 3.7%. Among young women, HIV incidence decreased from 5,000 (95% CI: 4,200-6,100) to 3,200 (95% CI: 3,000-3,700). Men aged ≥25 years and both female groups showed significant annual decreases in incidence rates from 2000 to 2018. In 2018, the estimated number of new infections was 48,500 (95% CI: 45300-57500), 34,800 (95% CI: 32800-41500) men, 13,600 (95% CI: 12,500-16,000) women. Improvements in the time from infection to diagnosis and in the proportion of cases receiving antiretroviral therapy immediately after diagnosis were found for all groups. Comparison with GBD estimates shows similar rates for men with overlapping confidence intervals. Among women, differences are higher mainly in more recent years. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that efforts to control the HIV epidemic are having an impact. However, there is an urgent need to address the vulnerability of young men.

Resumo Uma vez que o sistema calpaína é central para o amaciamento da carne e dada a importância da atividade de calpastatina na determinação da maciez de bifes de bovinos Bos taurus indicus, o objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar se a expressão do gene de μ-calpaína (CAPN1), calpastatina total (CAST T), e suas variantes (CAST I e II) foi induzido pela inclusão de vitamina D3 na dieta. Os animais receberam nenhuma ou 2 × 106 UI dose de vitamina D3 por 2 ou 8 dias antes do abate, e foram submetidos a diferentes condições durante o confinamento: exposição solar ou sombreamento artificial. Bifes do Longissimus lumborum foram fabricados e submetidos a maturação por 1, 7, e 21 dias post-mortem e posteriormente usados para determinação da força de cisalhamento e do índice de fragmentação miofibrilar. Vitamina D3 não influenciou a abundância de RNAm, exceto para maior abundância de transcritos de CAST II em animais que foram suplementados por 8 dias antes do abate. Foi encontrada associação negativa entre a abundância de CAST II e a força de cisalhamento. Essa contradição revela uma importante modulação da expressão do sistema calpaína resultado da suplementação com vitamina D que pode ser importante na determinação de estratégias para melhorar a maciez da carne.

ABSTRACT The calpain system is the central player for meat tenderization and the calpastatin activity plays an important role in beef tenderness of Bos taurus indicus cattle. This study investigated whether dietary vitamin D3 induced gene expression of μ-calpain (CAPN1), total calpastatin (CAST T), and their variants (CAST I and II). Animals received none or 2 × 106 IU of vitamin D3 for either 2 or 8 days before slaughter and were submitted to different conditions during feedlot: sun exposure or artificial shade. Steaks from Longissimus lumborum were fabricated, aged for 1, 7, and 21 days post-mortem, and later used for the analyses of shear force and the myofibrillar fragmentation index. Vitamin D3 did not influence mRNA abundance; however, it induced a greater CAST II transcript in animals supplemented 8 days before slaughter. There was a negative association between CAST II abundance and the shear force, which revealed an important modulation of the calpain system expression due to vitamin D supplementation. This result is an important tool for strategies to improve beef tenderness.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta compreensões relacionadas às práticas matemáticas de professores, por meio da formação continuada, em Escolas no Campo. Para a reflexão acerca dessa temática, tomamos como base norteadora as discussões advindas do Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas de Práticas Investigativas em Educação Matemática (GEPIMat). Nessa direção questionamos: quais fatores motivam e contribuem para os processos com as práticas matemáticas de professores que atuam no contexto da Educação do Campo? Objetivamos descrever os percursos iniciais de constituição dos professores que atuam no contexto da Educação do Campo com práticas matemáticas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada com duas professoras de Escolas do Campo em Manaus, no estado do Amazonas, Brasil. Quanto ao percurso metodológico, utilizamos como instrumentos de recolha e de análise de dados, observações, anotações, gravações e o uso dos percursos formativos. Os resultados destacaram que a formação continuada corrobora para uma reflexão para as práticas matemáticas futuras de professores.

Abstract This article presents thinking related to the mathematical practices of teachers, through continuing education, in Rural Schools. For the reflection on this theme, we take as a guiding basis the discussions arising from the Group of Studies and Research of Investigative Practices in Mathematics Education (GEPIMat). In this direction, we ask: which factors motivate and contribute to the processes concerning mathematical practices of teachers who work in the context of Rural Education? Our aim is to the initial paths in the making of teachers who work in the context of Rural Education with mathematical practices. It is a qualitative inquiry, a Case Study, carried out with two teachers from schools in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. As for methods, we used the following instruments of collection and analysis: observations, notes, recordings, and the use of training paths. The results highlighted that continuing education supports a reflection on the future mathematical practices of teachers.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar os fatores relacionados aos sintomas depressivos em pessoas idosas com diabetes mellitus. Método: pesquisa transversal, com abordagem quantitativa e realizada com a participação de 144 pessoas idosas cadastradas em 72 Unidades Saúde da Família do município de João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados no período de setembro a dezembro de 2019, utilizando instrumento para a obtenção de dados referentes ao perfil sociodemográfico e clínico e a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica mediante estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: observou-se que 75,7% dos idosos com diabetes não tinham sintomas depressivos. Foi evidenciada associação significativa entre a sintomatologia depressiva e as variáveis renda pessoal (p=0,044), tipo de renda (p=0,020), dislipidemia (p=0,038), complicações do diabetes (p=0,045) e a retinopatia (p=0,033). Conclusão: os fatores sociais, de saúde e relacionados ao diabetes podem influenciar negativamente a condição psíquica da pessoa idosa e favorecer o surgimento de sintomas depressivos.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the factors related to depressive symptoms in older adults with Diabetes Mellitus. Method: a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach conducted with 144 older adults registered in 72 Family Health units from the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. The data were collected from September to December 2019, using an instrument to obtain information referring to the sociodemographic and clinical profile and the Geriatric Depression Scale by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: it was observed that 75.7% of the diabetic older adults did not present depressive symptoms. There was a significant association between depressive symptoms and the following variables: personal income (p=0.044), type of income (p=0.020), dyslipidemia (p=0.038), diabetes complications (p=0.045) and retinopathy (p=0.033). Conclusion: the social and health factors, as well as those related to diabetes, can exert negative influences on older adults’ psychological state and favor the onset of depressive symptoms.

RESUMEN Objetivo: identificar los factores relacionados con síntomas depresivos en ancianos con Diabetes Mellitus. Método: investigación transversal, de enfoque cuantitativo y realizada con la participación de 144 adultos mayores registrados en 72 unidades de Salud de la Familia del municipio de João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil. Los datos se recolectaron entre septiembre y diciembre de 2019, utilizando un instrumento para obtener datos sobre el perfil sociodemográfico y clínico y la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados: se observó que el 75,7% de los ancianos que padecían diabetes no tenían síntomas depresivos. Se registró una asociación significativa entre los síntomas depresivos y las variables ingresos personales (p=0,044), tipo de ingresos (p=0,020), dislipidemia (p=0,038), complicaciones de la diabetes (p=0,045) y retinopatía (p=0,033). Conclusión: los factores sociales, de salud y relacionados con la diabetes pueden ejercer influencias negativas sobre el estado psicológico de los ancianos y favorece la aparición de síntomas depresivos.

Resumo Gêmeos unidos (GUs) são uma complicação rara de gestações gemelares monocoriônicas e monoamnióticas. Descrevemos o uso de tecnologias 3D, incluindo modelos 3D virtuais e físicos, na avaliação pré-natal de GU parapagus. Mulher de 16 anos, G1P0, foi encaminhada para avaliação anatômica por ressonância magnética (RM) fetal de GU com 28 semanas de gestação. Imagens 3D da superfície fetal foram geradas pelo software durante o exame para compreensão espacial da relação entre as partes fetais. O par de GUs morreu na 32ª semana de gestação, poucas horas após a cesariana. As tecnologias 3D são uma importante ferramenta de aconselhamento dos pais e de preparação da equipe multiprofissional para o parto e a assistência neonatal, além de possível planejamento cirúrgico para separação pós-natal em casos de GUs.

Abstract Conjoined twins (CTs) are a rare complication from monochorionic and monoamniotic twin pregnancies. We describe the use of 3D technologies, including 3D virtual and 3D physical models on prenatal evaluation of one parapagus CT. A 16-year-old G1P0 woman was referred for fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) anatomical evaluation of a CT at 28 weeks of gestation. 3D images of the fetal surface were generated by the software during the examination for spatial comprehension of the relationship between the fetal parts. The pair of CTs died at the 32nd week of gestation, a few hours after cesarean section. 3D technologies are an important tool for parental counseling and preparation of the multidisciplinary care team for delivery and neonatal assistance and possible surgical planning for postnatal separation in CTs cases.

O manejo clínico de pacientes com hanseníase apresenta um desafio particular que são as reações. O objetivo deste estudo de coorte não concorrente foi analisar o tempo e fatores associados à ocorrência da primeira reação durante e após o tratamento da poliquimioterapia (PQT). Avaliou-se 1.621 pacientes paucibacilares (PB = 8,9%) e multibacilares (MB = 91,1%) de 2008 a 2016 notificados no Sistema de Estados Reacionais em Hanseníase/Rondônia (SisReação/RO). Prevaleceu a ocorrência durante o tratamento da PQT = 997 (61,5%), e 624 (38,5%) somente após o PQT. A precocidade da reação, a partir do diagnóstico, foi analisada por meio de curvas de sobrevida de Kaplan-Meier e comparadas entre os grupos PB e MB, usando o teste de log-rank de Mantel-Cox; e foram construídos modelos de regressão de Cox univariada e multivariada para identificar os fatores associados à ocorrência da reação (hazard ratio) e os correspondentes IC95%. No modelo multivariado foram incluídas variáveis com valores de p < 0,2 na análise univariada. Os PB desenvolveram reação de forma mais precoce do que os MB. Outras características associaram-se à reação em menor tempo: sexo feminino e baciloscopia negativa. No período agregado (durante e após a PQT), os pacientes PB apresentaram risco 24% maior de reação do que os MB e aqueles com baciloscopia negativa aumentaram este risco em 40% comparado à baciloscopia positiva. Durante e após a PQT, os PB apresentaram 1,3 e 1,6 vezes maior risco de ocorrência da reação dos pacientes MB. Dessa forma, recomendamos priorizar ações de vigilância para reações hansênicas durante e após a PQT como medidas de prevenção de incapacidades físicas e de melhoria na qualidade de vida das pessoas acometidas pela hanseníase.

The clinical management of leprosy patients poses a specific challenge, namely lepra reactions. This non-concurrent cohort study aimed to analyze the timing of the first lepra reaction during and after polychemotherapy (PCT) and associated factors. A total of 1,621 patients were assessed (PB = 8.9% and MB = 91.1%) from 2008 to 2016, reported to the System of Reaction States in Leprosy (SisReação/RO) database. Reactions occurred predominantly during PCT (997; 61.5%) and less frequently only after PCT (624; 38.5%). Earliness of the reaction after diagnosis was analyzed with Kaplan-Meier survival curves, with comparison between the PB and MB groups using the Mantel-Cox log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were constructed to identify factors associated with occurrence of lepra reactions (hazard ratio) and the corresponding 95%CI. The multivariate model included variables with p-values < 0.20 in the univariate analysis. PB patients developed reactions earlier than MB patients. Other characteristics were associated with earlier reactions: female gender and negative smear microscopy. In the aggregate period (during and after PCT), PB presented 24% higher risk of lepra reaction than MB patients, and negative smear microscopy increased this risk by 40% compared to positive smear microscopy. During and after PCT, PB presented 1.3 and 1.6 times the risk, respectively, of reactions when compared to MB patients. We thus recommend prioritizing surveillance of lepra reactions during and after PCT as measures to prevent physical disabilities and to improve quality of life for persons with leprosy.

La gestión clínica de pacientes con hanseniasis presenta un desafío particular que son las reacciones. En el modelo multivariado se incluyeron las variables con valores de p < 0,2 en el análisis univariado. Los PB desarrollaron una reacción de forma más precoz que los MB. Otras características se asociaron a la reacción en menor tiempo: sexo femenino y baciloscopia negativa. En el período agregado (durante y tras PQT), los PB presentaron un riesgo un 24% mayor de reacción que los multibacilares y la baciloscopia negativa aumentó este riesgo en un 40%, comparado con la baciloscopia positiva. Durante y tras el tratamiento PQT, los PB presentaron 1,3 y 1,6 veces el riesgo de ocurrencia de la reacción de los pacientes MB. De esa forma, recomendamos priorizar acciones de vigilancia para reacciones hansénicas durante y tras PQT, como medidas de prevención de discapacidades físicas, así como de mejoría en la calidad de vida de personas afectadas por la hanseniasis.

ABSTRACT Purpose To present a model to reproduce the clinical condition, in order to better understand the pathophysiology of neurological impairment related to intoxication. Methods Twenty-five Wistar rats were used and divided into five groups: Shaw group (WHI), water gavage group (WGV), star fruit gavage group (SGV), nephropathic group with water gavage (NPW), nephropathic group with star fruit gavage (NPS).Nephropathic groups were submitted to surgery, developing nephropathy. After surgery, they received preestablished gavage with star fruit juice or water. The electroencephalographic records were evaluated in the experimental nephropathic group that received gavage of star fruit juice. Results To assess the induction of neurotoxicity using electroencephalographic data, the NPS group demonstrated the presence of epileptic seizures associated with star fruit intoxication. Conclusions The experimental model herein presented was adequate to reproduce the clinical condition experienced by nephropathic patients who ingest star fruit juice, establishing, thus, an experimental model utterly important for the study of the neurological toxicity process.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do uso de radiação UV-C na intensidade de 0,53 KJ m-2, durante o cultivo de morango (Fragaria x ananassa), sobre os parâmetros físico-químicos e fitoquímicos dos frutos. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo unifatorial, com 11, 19, 29 e 39 aplicações de UV-C e sem aplicação de UV-C. A tonalidade dos frutos apresentou menor ângulo ao final do período de estudo. O pH variou em morangos que receberam 39 aplicações de UV-C, e o conteúdo de sólidos solúveis diferiu com 19 aplicações. A atividade antioxidante foi menor nas frutas com 11, 19 e 29 aplicações de UV-C, enquanto o teor de vitamina C foi menor apenas nas frutas que receberam 29 aplicações. O uso de radiação UV-C de 0,53 KJ m-2, durante o cultivo de morango, afeta os parâmetros físico-químicos e fitoquímicos dos frutos, mas não leva à perda de sua qualidade.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the use of UV-C radiation at an intensity of 0.53 KJ m-2, during strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) cultivation, on the physicochemical and phytochemical parameters of the fruits. The used experimental design was completely randomized, in a single-factor arrangement with 11, 19, 29, and 39 UV-C applications and without UV-C application. The hue of the fruits was smaller at the end of the study period. pH varied in strawberries that received 39 applications of UV-C, and the soluble solids content differed with 19 applications. Antioxidant activity was lower in fruits with 11, 19, and 29 UV-C applications, whereas vitamin C content was lower only in fruits that received 29 applications. The use of UV-C radiation at an intensity of 0.53 KJ m-2, during strawberry cultivation, affects the physicochemical and phytochemical parameters of the fruits, but does not cause losses in their quality.

ABSTRACT A retrospective cohort of 11,308 chronic hepatitis C infected patients treated with regimens that included Sofosbuvir (SOF), Daclatasvir (DCV), Simeprevir (SMV), or an association of Ombitasvir, Veruprevir/Ritonavir and Dasabuvir (3D) with or without Ribavirin (RBV) were assessed for sustained virologic response (SVR) or viral cure after a 12-week treatment. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors independently associated with positive response to direct-acting antivirals (DAA)-based therapies.Overall 57.1% were male; 48.3% self-identified as white; 78.3% were over 50 years old; 44.1% were from the Southeast region; 47.7% had genotype 1b; and 84.5% were treated for 12 weeks. The SVR rates with DAAs ranged from 87% to 100%. Genotypes 1 and 4 had higher SVR rates (96.3–100%), and genotypes 2 and 3 had SVR of 90.6–92.2%, respectively. Treatment durations of 12 and 24 weeks were associated with an average SVR of 95.0% and 95.9%, respectively. Females were half as likely (OR 0.5; 95% CI 0.4−0.6) to have a negative response to therapy compared to males, and those with genotypes 2 and 3 were one and half fold more likely (OR 1.5–2.2; 95 CI% 0.7–2.9; 1.2–3.6 and OR 2.7–2.8; 95% CI 2.0–3.8, respectively) to not have SVR compared to genotype 1. Patients in the age-range of 50–69 years old were 1.2-fold (OR 1.2; 95% CI 0.7–1.9) more likely to not have SVR compared to other age groups, although not statistically significant.This study is the first of this magnitude to be held in a Latin-American country with high SVR results, supported by a free-of-charge universal and public health system. The high performance found in this study gives support to the Brazilian public health policy decision of adopting DAA-based therapies as a strategy to eliminate HCV by 2030.

RESUMO O conceito de conservação de precisão pode ser definido como um conjunto de tecnologias espaciais e outros procedimentos ligados as variáveis ambientais mapeáveis, que podem ser utilizadas para programar práticas de gestão da conservação recursos naturais que levam em consideração a variabilidade dessas variáveis no espaço e tempo dentro de sistemas naturais ou agrícolas. Nesse contexto, considera-se a perda estrutural do solo por meio de atividades antrópicas, como com um processo com variação espacial e temporal. A gestão da condição de agregação do solo pode contribuir para processos agrícolas mais regenerativos e sustentáveis, pois permite a utilização das tecnologias de análise espacial, por meio de indicadores visuais georreferenciados ou mesmo a utilização de sistemas com aprendizado automático, conhecidos como deep learning. Nesse sentido, foi desenvolvido um método visual justaposto com uma análise de lógica fuzzy para a classificação dos agregados quanto à forma, rugosidade superficial e estruturas biogênicas. Assim, numa segunda etapa foi desenvolvido um modelo de rede neural artificial capaz de detectar e classificar diferentes formas de agregados do solo, permitindo dessa maneira, uma breve discussão da temática e seu potencial de aplicação na gestão conservacionista por meio da análise de agregados via sistemas automáticos de classificação. Dessa maneira, são apresentados elementos para a motivação de pesquisas e desenvolvimento em tecnologias adaptativas, no apoio à decisão que possam auxiliar a integração de informações dinâmicas e espaciais no entendimento da condição estrutural do solo com a finalidade de uma conservação dos solos com mais precisão.

ABSTRACT The concept of precision conservation can be defined as a set of space technologies and other procedures linked to mappable environmental variables, which can be used to program conservation management practices for natural resources that consider the variability of these variables in space and time within of natural or agricultural systems. In this context, structural loss of soil through human activities is considered, as with a process with a spatial and temporal variation. The management of soil aggregation conditions can contribute to more regenerative and sustainable agricultural processes. It allows spatial analysis technologies through georeferenced visual indicators or even the use of systems with automatic learning, known as deep learning. In this sense, a fair visual method was developed with an analysis of fuzzy logic to classify aggregates in terms of shape, surface roughness, and biogenic structures. Thus, in a second stage, a model of the artificial neural network was developed, capable of detecting and classifying different forms of soil aggregates, thus allowing a brief discussion of the theme and its potential for application in conservation management through the analysis of aggregates via systems automatic sorting. In this way, elements are presented for the motivation of research and development in adaptive technologies in supporting decision-making that can help integrate dynamic and spatial information in the understanding of the soil’s structural condition to preserve the soil more precisely.

Abstract Purpose Studies have demonstrated that star fruit consumption by nephropathic patients triggers severe neurotoxic effects that can lead to convulsions or even death. Brain areas likely susceptible to star fruit poisoning have not been investigated. The objective of the present study was to map possible epileptogenic areas susceptible to star fruit intoxication in nephropathic rats. Methods The study analyzed 25 rats (5 groups). Rats in the experimental group underwent bilateral ureteral obstruction surgery and orogastric gavages with star fruit juice. An electroencephalogram was used to confirm convulsive seizures. Urea and creatinine levels were used to confirm the uremia model. Immunohistochemical analysis was used to map cells with c-Fos protein (c-Fos+ cells) to identify brain areas with increased neuronal activity. Control groups included non-nephropathic and nephropathic rats that did not receive star fruit. Results A statistically significant increase (p<0.01) in c-Fos+ cells was noted in nephropathic animals receiving star fruit juice compared to control groups, in brain areas commonly related to epileptogenic neural circuits including the hippocampus, amygdala, rhinal cortex, anterior cingulate area, piriform area, and medial dorsal thalamus. Conclusion These data corroborate the neurotoxic capacity of star fruit in nephropathic patients.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo do presente trabalho foi realizar um estudo clínico randomizado comparando os efeitos da expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) e da expansão lenta da maxila (ELM). O comprimento radicular do primeiro molar superior permanente e o deslocamento dentro do alvéolo foram estudados por meio de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC). Métodos: pacientes com deficiência maxilar transversal e faixa etária entre 7 e 10 anos foram incluídos no estudo. As crianças foram distribuídas em dois grupos: ERM (19 indivíduos com idade média de 8,60 anos) e ELM (13 indivíduos com idade média de 8,70 anos). Em ambos os grupos foi utilizado o aparelho expansor tipo Haas. Resultados: a cortical vestibular, a espessura do osso vestibular e a largura dentoalveolar sofreram redução nos dois grupos. No grupo ERM, a maior redução foi relacionada com a espessura do osso distal (1,26 mm), seguida pela espessura do osso mesial (1,09 mm), largura alveolar (0,57 mm) e, finalmente, pela cortical vestibular (0,19 mm). Já no grupo ELM, a espessura do osso mesial apresentou maiores valores de redução (0,87 mm), enquanto a cortical vestibular teve a menor redução (0,22 mm). A espessura do osso lingual aumentou nos dois grupos, sendo 0,56 mm no grupo ERM e 0,42 mm no grupo ELM. A raiz mesial aumentou significativamente nos grupos ERM (0,52 mm) e ELM (0,40 mm) - possivelmente, em função da rizogênese incompleta ainda em T1 (antes da instalação do aparelho). Conclusões: a expansão maxilar (ERM e ELM) não interrompe a formação ou leva à reabsorção radicular nos primeiros molares permanentes de pacientes jovens. Embora discretamente maiores no grupo ERM, as modificações na espessura do osso vestibular e lingual demonstradas pelos protocolos de ativação não apresentam diferenças significativas. O grupo ERM apresentou alterações semelhantes ao grupo ELM, em relação à cortical óssea vestibular.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of the present study was to conduct a randomized clinical trial comparing the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and slow maxillary expansion (SME). Maxillary permanent first molar root length and tooth movement through the alveolus were studied using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: Subjects with maxillary transverse deficiencies between 7 and 10 years of age were included. Using Haas-type expanders, children were randomly assigned to two groups: RME (19 subjects, mean age of 8.60 years) and SME (13 subjects, mean age of 8.70 years). Results: Buccal cortical, buccal bone thicknesses and dentoalveolar width decreased in both groups. In the RME group the greatest decrease was related to distal bone thickness (1.26 mm), followed by mesial bone thickness (1.09 mm), alveolar width (0.57 mm), and the buccal cortical (0.19 mm). In the SME group the mesial bone thickness decreased the most (0.87 mm) and the buccal cortical decreased the least (0.22 mm). The lingual bone thickness increased in the RME and SME groups (0.56 mm and 0.42 mm, respectively). The mesial root significantly increased in the RME group (0.52 mm) and in the SME group (0.40 mm), possibly due to incomplete root apex formation at T1 (prior to installation of expanders). Conclusions: Maxillary expansion (RME and SME) does not interrupt root formation neither shows first molar apical root resorption in juvenile patients. Although slightly larger in the RME group than SME group, both activation protocols showed similar buccal bone thickness and lingual bone thickness changes, without significant difference; and RME presented similar buccal cortical bone changes to SME.
