This article discusses the idea of critical linguistic education aiming at a radical social transformation – considering that this will only occur if critical and affective practices are integrated to the learning process. To achieve this objetive, we revisit the concept of critical literacy and then reflect on its connection with affectivity. After a brief review of the concept of criticality and its pedagogical appropriation by the theoretical strands named critical thinking, critical pedagogy, and critical literacy, we align ourselves with the perspective of criticality as a problematizing practice, which emerges from an engagement with differences. In chaotic times, we argue in favor of a linguistic education based on a critical-affective posture, so that the educational process follows the freirean philosophy, that is, is supportive of a transformative and peace-oriented education. Finally, we present a brief rereading of the pedagogy of multiliteracies, to instigate possibilities of pedagogical implementations that may contribute to an actual radical social transformation.

Nossa proposta, neste artigo, é discutir a ideia de educação linguística crítica com vistas a uma transformação social radical, entendendo que esta só ocorre se conduzida de forma crítica e afetiva. Para isso, revisitamos o conceito de letramento crítico, buscando refletir sobre sua ligação com a afetividade. Após uma breve revisão do conceito de criticidade e de sua apropriação pedagógica pelas vertentes denominadas pensamento crítico, pedagogia crítica e letramento crítico, alinhamo-nos com uma perspectiva de criticidade como prática problematizadora a partir do engajamento com as diferenças. Argumentamos em favor de uma educação linguística pautada em uma postura crítico-afetiva, em tempos caóticos, a fim de que o processo educativo possa realizar-se de modo alinhado à filosofia freireana e, assim, revelar-se transformador e orientado para a paz. Por fim, apresentamos uma breve releitura da chamada pedagogia dos multiletramentos, com o intuito de fomentar possibilidades de encaminhamentos pedagógicos que contribuam, de fato, para a transformação social radical.

RESUMO Este artigo se propõe a discutir o conceito de translinguagem, explorando a multiplicidade de entendimentos frente ao termo e buscando tecer ligações entre as principais características da orientação translíngue e as bases de uma educação linguística crítica e decolonial na sociedade contemporânea. Inicialmente, o histórico do referido termo é brevemente apresentado, na medida em que são também tensionados entendimentos acerca da translinguagem e de seus traços constitutivos. A fim de expandir possibilidades de conceituação, toma-se como foco o processo de construção de sentidos, ressaltando-se sua natureza historicamente situada e complexa, além de suas marcas heterodiscursivas, plurissemióticas e multissensoriais. RESUMO Neste artigo, pretendemos visibilizar os slams vivenciados “das ruas para as escolas, das escolas para as ruas” como letramentos literários que promovem, entre as juventudes do Sul Global, espaços translíngues potencialmente criativos, críticos e transformativos. Partindo do grito de luta do projeto Slam Interescolar SP, destacamos os antecedentes e a trajetória da iniciativa organizada, desde 2015, pelo coletivo paulistano Slam da Guilhermina. Posteriormente, exploramos entendimentos sobre translinguagem e decolonialidade, lentes pelas quais vemos emergir as sensibilidades de mundo que desafiam práticas monoglóssicas e narrativas hegemônicas em batalhas poéticas travadas desde o chão das escolas. Identificamos tais subversões na análise do poema Gé putáre tenetehára, da então estudante de Ensino Médio Franciele Evangelista Apolinário, durante a etapa final do projeto Slam Interescolar SP 2020 – edição online. Destacamos os aspectos poético-literários, aos quais aproximamos dimensões da abordagem translíngue enativo-performativa, para apontarmos a potência de linguagens, histórias e culturas como experiências estéticas transformadoras dos slams inseridos no contexto escolar paulista. Por fim, consideramos que essas vivências podem potencializar a presença de gretas e semeaduras das quais emergem gritos de resistência entre os jovens slammers desse território.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we intend to make visible the slams experienced “from the streets to the schools, from the schools to the streets” as literary literacies that promote, among the youth of the Global South, potentially creative, critical and transformative translingual spaces. Based on the struggle cry of the Slam Interescolar SP project, we highlight the history and trajectory of the initiative, organized since 2015 by the São Paulo collective Slam da Guilhermina. Subsequently, we explore understandings of translanguaging and decoloniality, lenses through which we see emerging world sensibilities that challenge monoglossic practices and hegemonic narratives in their poetic battles fought from the ground of schools. We identified such subversions in the analysis of the poem Gé putáre tenetehára, by the then high school student Franciele Evangelista Apolinário, during the final stage of the Slam Interescolar SP 2020 project – online edition. We highlight the poetic-literary aspects, to which we approach dimensions of the enactive-performative translingual approach, in order to point out the power of languages, histories and cultures as transforming aesthetic experiences of the slams inserted in the São Paulo school context. Finally, we believe that these experiences can enhance the presence of cracks and sowings from which cries of resistance emerge among the young slammers in this territory.

RESUMO Utilizando a duoetnografia (NORRIS; SAWYER, 2012), os autores exploram desafios e oportunidades para o ensino crítico de línguas em tempos de crise. Após uma breve introdução à metodologia de pesquisa, a trioetnografia utilizada pelos autores examina dialogicamente três áreas temáticas de particular interesse no Brasil e no Canadá: 1. A potência do afeto e sua relevância para a linguística aplicada e a formação de professores de línguas; 2. O ressurgimento das “guerras de letramentos” na educação, no que diz respeito às suas interconexões ideológicas e epistemológicas com as relações sociais de poder; 3. Implicações emergentes para práticas de ensino de língua e de letramentos, por meio das quais os autores compartilham experiências de sala de aula e estratégias transgressivas informadas por abordagens plurilíngues e afetivas. A complexidade e variedade de aspectos discutidos neste artigo ajudam a promover as possibilidades de pesquisa e ensino críticos nestes tempos difíceis e perigosos.

ABSTRACT Utilizing duoethnography (NORRIS; SAWYER, 2012), the authors explore challenges and opportunities for critical language teaching in times of crisis. Following a brief introduction of research methodology, the authors’ trioethnography dialogically examines three topical areas of particular concern in Brazil and Canada: 1. The potency of affect and its relevance for applied linguistics and language teacher education; 2. The re-emergence of “literacy wars” in education, with attention to their ideological and epistemological interconnections to social power relations; 3. Emerging implications for language and literacy pedagogies in which the authors share classroom experiences and transgressive strategies informed by plurilingual and affective insights. The complexity and variety of settings discussed in this final section help promote the possibilities for critical research and teaching in these difficult and dangerous times.

RESUMO Este artigo explora possibilidades de articulação entre os fundamentos da orientação translíngue e o pensamento decolonial. São inicialmente discutidas as principais características da sociedade contemporânea, sob a ótica de sua condição líquida e pós-disciplinar, bem como suas implicações para as relações humanas e para a educação linguística na contemporaneidade. Entre outras, as noções de translingualismo restritivo e expansivo são mobilizadas para embasar reflexões sobre o caráter político-ideológico das práticas translíngues e argumentar que, em sua vertente transformativa, a translinguagem pode assumir tonalidade pós-humana e pós-colonial e evidenciar-se como um potente recurso para a promoção de práticas (educativas) mais democratizadoras.

ABSTRACT This paper explores possibilities of articulation between translanguaging and decolonial thinking. At first, the main characteristics of the contemporary society are discussed from the perspective of its fluidity and post-disciplinary condition. Possible implications of such features to human relations and to language education nowadays are also debated. Among others, the notions of restrictive and expansive translingualism are brought to light in order to foster reflections on the political-ideological nature of translingual practices and to argue that, in its transformative framework, translinguaging can assume a posthuman and postcolonial nature and become a powerful resource aimed at more democratizing (educational) practices today.

O presente artigo discute a noção de prática translíngue, em contraposição a orientações monolíngues e monolíticas, no campo do ensino de língua estrangeira. Para tanto, são tecidas considerações sobre a noção de superdiversidade e seus impactos nos modos de expressão e construção de conhecimento na atualidade. As teorizações bakhtinianas, por meio dos conceitos de dialogismo e heteroglossia, são atreladas às bases do pensamento translíngue, trazendo à tona a ideia de espaço público para sustentar a importância de uma pedagogia voltada à responsabilidade social.

This paper presents the concept of translingual practice as opposed to monolithic and monolingual perspectives within the field of foreign language teaching. The notion of superdiversity is also discussed, as well as its implications to the ways meanings and knowledge are constructed these days. Bakhtinian theories, especially as far as the notions of dialogism and heteroglossia are concerned, are linked to the translingual approach raising the idea of public space in order to support the importance of a pedagogy concerned with the development of social responsibility.

Este artigo tem como objetivo principal a discussão sobre as contribuições das teorias do círculo bakhtiniano à área de ensino-aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras (HALL et al., 2005), no que diz respeito aos primeiros anos da educação formal no Brasil, mais precisamente, ao Ensino Fundamental I. Até o presente momento as línguas estrangeiras, inclusive a língua inglesa, foco deste trabalho, não fazem parte da Matriz Curricular desse âmbito educacional. Frente à importância do inglês em uma sociedade globalizada e à despeito dos controversos impactos de sua influência nos mais variados campos, temos presenciado, de um modo geral, a crescente expansão da implantação dessa língua nas séries iniciais do ensino público, o que vem ocorrendo de forma irregular e sem apoio de parâmetros oficiais (ROCHA, 2006). Diante do exposto, a relevância deste estudo recai na apresentação de algumas diretrizes para o contexto focalizado, que visam a sustentar um ensino-aprendizagem supostamente mais efetivo, situado e significativo. Assim sendo, com base em uma abordagem plurilinguística e pluricultural frente à educação de línguas, tomam-se aqui os gêneros discursivos como organizadores do processo. Entendemos que, em um ensino de caráter dialógico e trans/intercultural (MAHER, 2007), voltado ao desenvolvimento de multiletramentos (COPE e KALANTZIS, 2000) críticos (COMBER, 2006), possa certamente ocorrer a hibridação de gêneros e de culturas. Nesse contexto, torna-se possível a criação de terceiros espaços (KOSTOGRIZ, 2005; KUMARAVADIVELU, 2008) que, por sua vez, propiciam a realização de uma aprendizagem transformadora. Nessa perspectiva, o inglês é visto como um objeto fronteiriço (STAR e GRIESEMER, 1989), no e pelo qual o plurilinguismo, a diversidade e a polifonia naturalmente se fazem presentes.

This article aims at discussing the contributions of the Bakhtinian Circle theories to foreign language teaching and learning (HALL et al., 2005), as far as the first years of formal education in Brazil are concerned. Up to the present moment, foreign languages, including English, are not officially part of the National Curriculum of the first five schooling years. Due to the importance of English in a globalized world and despite all the controversial socio-educational impacts of such an influence, there has been an increase in the interest in this discipline at the beginning years of Brazilian public education (ROCHA, 2006), which has been happening at an irregular pace and without official parameters. Therefore, the relevance of this work lies on the possible guidelines it may offer to support a more effective, situated and meaningful teaching-learning process in that context. Standing for a pluralistic approach to language education, we take the bakhtinian speech genres as organizers of the educational process. We strongly believe that through a dialogic, pluralistic and trans/intercultural teaching (MAHER, 2007), whose main objective is the development of multi (COPE e KALANTZIS, 2000) and critical (COMBER, 2006) literacies, the hybridization of genres and cultures, as well as the creation of third spaces (KOSTOGRIZ, 2005; KUMARAVADIVELU, 2008) can happen. From this perspective, foreign language teaching and learning play a transformative role in society and English is seen as a boundary object (STAR e GRIESEMER, 1989), in and by which diversity, pluralism and polyphony can naturally find their way.

Este artigo tem como propósito central discutir e articular visões de linguagem orientadas por perspectivas socioculturalmente situadas, dialógica e discursivamente embasadas, com vistas à apresentação de um possível conjunto de referências que viabilizem a análise de livros didáticos de inglês para o Ensino Fundamental I. Em face ao escasso número de estudos dessa ordem, à predominância de abordagens ainda demasiadamente estruturalistas no ensino de línguas e à reconhecida importância que o livro didático assume no processo educacional, tanto em língua materna quanto estrangeira, entendemos que este trabalho possa vir a contribuir positivamente para a área, que, em nossa acepção, tem como objetivo a construção de letramentos múltiplos e críticos que, por sua vez, sustentem a formação protagonista e transformadora na contemporaneidade.

This article aims at discussing and articulating views of language under sociocultural, dialogic and discourse perspectives, in order to present a theoretical framework as far as the analysis of textbooks of English as a foreign language for the Brazilian Ensino Fundamental I is concerned. Due to the limited number of studies in this field, to the still considerably structural approach of the English language teaching and learning in our country nowadays and to the important mediation role textbooks play in language education, we believe our work can contribute positively to the construction of critical and multiple literacies, which, in turn, can support an active and transformative educacional process in the present times.

O objetivo deste artigo é discutir acerca do ensino de línguas estrangeiras (LE) para crianças. Respaldando-nos em princípios da teoria Sócio-cultural (Vygotsky, 1978) e do Comunicativismo (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2005), voltados para o ensino de línguas (inglês) para crianças (Cameron, 2001; Brewster, Ellis & Girard, 2002; entre outros), teceremos reflexões sobre a importância da aprendizagem de línguas na infância, sobre a relevância motivação e da qualidade das interações para um ensino cujo objetivo principal recai na formação integral do aluno, como também sobre o papel da gramática, da oralidade e da língua materna no processo. Serão também feitas considerações acerca da importância da formação (contínua) do professor atuante nesse contexto e de possíveis procedimentos no ensino em pauta, quando serão apresentadas breves proposições orientadas pela noção bakhtiniana de gêneros.

This article aims at discussing about the foreign language teaching to young learners, taking the principles of the Sociocultural Theory (Vygotksy, 1978) and of the Communicative Approach (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2005) related to Primary English teaching (Cameron, 2001; Brewster, Ellis & Girard, 2002) as a theoretical references. Considerations about the importance of language learning in childhood will be made, as well as about the role of the grammar, oral language and mother tongue in the process. Likewise, the importance of Teacher Education will be briefly approached. This work is ended with the discussion about some possible procedures in the language teaching processes followed by a brief presentation of possible guidelines based on the bakhtinian notion of discourse genres.

Este trabalho, de natureza qualitativa e de cunho etnográfico, tem como cenário um Projeto de Línguas Estrangeiras, implementado nos Ciclos 1 e 2 do Ensino Fundamental Público de uma cidade do interior paulista. O objetivo principal do estudo é investigar as visões implícitas da avaliação proposta pelo livro didático em uso no mencionado contexto de ensino, confrontando-as com a abordagem explícita do material acerca do processo avaliatório e com as crenças dos professores sobre a avaliação em foco. Para tanto, tomamos como referencial os princípios sociointeracionistas (Vygotsky, 1978) e comunicacionais (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2005) de linguagem e aprendizagem, assim como construtos referentes às crenças sobre ensino e aprendizagem de línguas (Barcelos, 1995, 2004a, b; Silva, 2005) e também referentes à avaliação (Scaramucci, 1997, 2004) no ensino de línguas para crianças (Cameron, 2001).

This qualitative and ethnographic study was carried out within the context of a Foreign Language Project implemented in the Municipal Primary Schools of a small city in the state of São Paulo State. This research aimed at investigating the implicit and explicit views of the evaluation proposed by the coursebook in use. This work also aimed at researching into the relationship between such views and the beliefs of the teachers involved in such evaluation process. The theoretical framework includes reference to the communicative (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2005) and socio-interactionist principles (Vygotsky, 1978, 1998, 2001) applied to the concept of beliefs (Barcelos, 1995, 2004a, b; Silva, 2005), as well as on constructs related to testing and assessment (Scaramucci, 1997, 2004) as far as Primary English teaching is concerned (Cameron, 2001).
