L-Arginine and chronic exercise reduce oxidative stress. However, it is unclear how they affect cardiomyocytes during cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible effects of L-arginine supplementation and aerobic training on systemic oxidative stress and their consequences on cardiomyocytes during cardiometabolic disease onset caused by excess fructose. Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control (C), fructose (F, 10% fructose in water), fructose training (FT; moderate running, 50-70% of the maximal velocity), and fructose arginine (FA; 880 mg/kg/day). Fructose was given for two weeks and fructose plus treatments for the subsequent eight weeks. Body composition, blood glucose, insulin, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, nitrite, metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity, left ventricle histological changes, microRNA-126, -195, and -146, eNOS, p-eNOS, and TNF-α expressions were analyzed. Higher abdominal fat mass, triacylglycerol level, and insulin level were observed in the F group, and both treatments reversed these alterations. Myocardial vascularization was impaired in fructose-fed groups, except in FT. Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was observed in all fructose-fed groups. TNF-α levels were higher in fructose-fed groups than in the C group, and p-eNOS levels were higher in the FA than in the C and F groups. Lipid peroxidation was higher in the F group than in the FT and C groups. During CVD onset, moderate aerobic exercise reduced lipid peroxidation, and both training and L-arginine prevented metabolic changes caused by excessive fructose. Myocardial vascularization was impaired by fructose, and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy appeared to be influenced by pro-inflammatory and oxidative environments.

ABSTRACT Ingestion of S. planicaulis (Sin. S. carpinifolia) causes lysosomal storage disease in sheep. The main toxic compound of this plant, swainsonine, inhibits the enzymatic activity of α-mannosidase I and II, resulting in lysosomal storage of glycoproteins. We describe a case of spontaneous poisoning by S. planucaulis in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Physical examination of affected animals revealed proprioceptive deficit, motor incoordination, staggering movement, and head tremors. Histopathological evaluation showed severe swelling/cytoplasmic vacuolization in Purkinje neurons, with a foamy appearance and occasional karyolysis or karyopyknosis, and intense vacuolization of acinar cells of the pancreas and, less markedly, thyroid follicular cells. The positive lectin-histochemistry labeling for Con A, WGA and sWGA lectins characterized the disease as a glycoproteinosis. The ultrastructural evaluation revealed numerous vacuoles up to 2.5μm in diameter bounded by membranes up to 20nm thick in pancreatic acinar cells. The diagnosis of S. planicaulis toxicity was established based on epidemiological data, clinicopathological, lectino-histochemical, and ultrastructural findings. This is the second report of spontaneous poisoning of sheep by S. planicaulis in Brazil, but the first in the Southeastern Brazil.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Summarize the literature on the relationship between composite socioeconomic indicators and mortality in different geographical areas of Brazil. METHODS This scoping review included articles published between January 1, 2000, and August 31, 2020, retrieved by means of a bibliographic search carried out in the Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Lilacs databases. Studies reporting on the association between composite socioeconomic indicators and all-cause, or specific cause of death in any age group in different geographical areas were selected. The review summarized the measures constructed, their associations with the outcomes, and potential study limitations. RESULTS Of the 77 full texts that met the inclusion criteria, the study reviewed 24. The area level of composite socioeconomic indicators analyzed comprised municipalities (n = 6), districts (n = 5), census tracts (n = 4), state (n = 2), country (n = 2), and other areas (n = 5). Six studies used composite socioeconomic indicators such as the Human Development Index, Gross Domestic Product, and the Gini Index; the remaining 18 papers created their own socioeconomic measures based on sociodemographic and health indicators. Socioeconomic status was inversely associated with higher rates of all-cause mortality, external cause mortality, suicide, homicide, fetal and infant mortality, respiratory and circulatory diseases, stroke, infectious and parasitic diseases, malnutrition, gastroenteritis, and oropharyngeal cancer. Higher mortality rates due to colorectal cancer, leukemia, a general group of neoplasms, traffic accident, and suicide, in turn, were observed in less deprived areas and/or those with more significant socioeconomic development. Underreporting of death and differences in mortality coverage in Brazilian areas were cited as the main limitation. CONCLUSIONS Studies analyzed mortality inequalities in different geographical areas by means of composite socioeconomic indicators, showing that the association directions vary according to the mortality outcome. But studies on all-cause mortality and at the census tract level remain scarce. The results may guide the development of new composite socioeconomic indicators for use in mortality inequality analysis.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to describe a case of bilateral and symmetrical squamous cell carcinoma from the horn base in a cow and to discuss the hormonal question, possibly involved in its pathogenesis. A 11-year-old beef cow presenting a history of progressive thinning, presence of exophytic masses at the base of both horns and anestrous for many years was assisted. An incisional biopsy of both lesions was performed for histopathological examination and hormonal dosages. Due to the clinical progression, euthanasia followed by necroscopic and histopathological examination was carried out. Histopathological examination revealed a well differentiated infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma and the hormonal dosages presented changes in luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating and total estrogen levels. Although there are descriptions of basal squamous cell carcinoma of the horn, there were still no reports of the occurrence of the same bilateral in a cow with hormonal disorders.

ABSTRACT In a recent study with young females (up to 5 years old) of the Campolina breed, there were discrete indications of alterations in the digit, apparently associated to the increase in adiposity. With the hypothesis that this association is more evident in horses in the upper age group, the objective was to study Campolina adult mares (above 5 years) with and without obesity, evaluating radiographically the spatial relationship between the horn and distal phalanx. Eighteen mares between six and fourteen years and with a body score of 5 to 7/9 (Control Group) and 8 to 9 (Obeso Group) were used. Adiposity and radiographic measurements from the forelimbs were analyzed. Comparisons were made between groups and adiposity variables were correlated with hoof variables. The sinking distance of the distal phalanx was about 20% higher in obese mares (12.3±2.5 versus 10.2±2.2mm). This parameter also correlated (P< 0.01) with several adiposity parameters, with emphasis on body score condition (r= 0.47) and neck circumference at 75% (r= 0.42). In conclusion, Campolina mares with obesity have obvious alterations in the spatial relation between the corneal and the distal phalanx, which get intense according to increases in age and adiposity.

ABSTRACT The irritable bowel syndrome is defined as the presence of continuing or recurrent abdominal pain and it is associated with altered bowel habit. Experimental studies with Panax ginseng C.A. Mey., Araliaceae, have demonstrated the antinociceptive action on calcium and sodium channels, as well as on primary sensory neurons. A clinical double-blind, randomized, prospective and experimental trial was conducted for sixty days, comparing the action of dry extract of P. ginseng (300 mg/day) with trimebutine (600 mg/day). Patients were assessed at four visits for abdominal pain, using the Likert scale, and adverse events. Twenty-four patients completed the study, being 87.5% female and mean age of 47.41 years. There was improvement in abdominal pain, through Likert scale values, in patients who used P. ginseng. This group started from a median basal of −5 to 2.5, 3 and 5 in the 1st, 4th and 8th weeks of treatment, respectively, with a statistically significant difference. Similar results were achieved in those patients who used trimebutine. The only adverse effect observed was the occurrence of headache in two patients (16.66%) in the group that used the herbal. The research suggests that P. ginseng was effective in the control of abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome patients, analogous to trimebutin, and may be used in future studies for a better evaluation of the obtained results.

ABSTRACT Articular cartilage reconstruction is still a challenge in Veterinary Medicine. The aim was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of kartogenin, a small molecule that promotes chondrocyte differentiation, in the repair of induced chondral defects pretreated with subchondral drilling. Six horses with a mean (± SD) weight of 342 ± 1.58Kg, aging 7.2 ± 1.30 years, and with a mean 7.1 ± 0.75 body score condition were used. In both stifles, a 1cm2 chondral defect was induced in the lateral femoral trochlea followed by treatment with subchondral drilling. Four intra-articular injections with kartogenin (20mM) were performed weekly in one stifle (treated group). The same procedure using saline solution was performed in the contralateral joint (control group). Clinical, radiographic, ultrasound evaluations were performed for a period of 60 days. No statistical differences were detected between groups in any of the studied variables. Although kartogenin has shown to improve articular cartilage repair in laboratory animal models, the same was not observed in this equine model. In conclusion, the kartogenin therapy, according to the used protocol, did not promote any clinical benefit in equine femoral trochlear defects pretreated with subcondral drilling.

The aim of this research was to know the copper, zinc, iron and molybdenum content in serum and liver of small ruminants raised in the cities of Casa Nova and Juazeiro, state of Bahia, and verify the occurrence of primary or secondary copper deficiency. A total of 160 samples of sheep and goats of both sexes collected in the dry and rainy season were evaluated. The values for serum copper in goats was 13.8±0.3±mol/L and in sheep it was 12.2±0.4 ±mol/L, while the mean liver concentration was 220 ppm for goats and 238 ppm for sheep. The serum zinc value for goats was 28.3±1.0±mol/L and for sheep it was 28.7±0.8±mol/L, while the mean liver concentration was 99 ppm for goats and 92 ppm for sheep. Serum iron value for goats was 61±3±mol/L and for sheep it was 64±2±mol/L, while liver levels were 172 ppm for goats and 221 ppm for sheep. Copper mean values do not indicate the occurrence of copper deficiency in small ruminants raised in the cities studied. Zinc levels were within the normal values and do not require extra supplementation of this mineral. The serum iron levels were elevated, however it did not interfere in copper metabolism in order to result in a cupric deficiency.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of platelet-rich (PRP) and poor (PPP) plasma in cell proliferation and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) expression during the repair of deep corneal ulcers. Forty-five female rabbits were distributed in 3 experimental groups (G) (n = 15), referred to as PRP (GR), PPP (GP) and Control (GC) groups, in accordance with the treatment. All animals underwent surgical induction of unilateral corneal ulcer. PRP and PPP eye drops were made by using centrifuged blood through standardized protocol, and instilled five times a day. In GC, lubricant eye drops were used. Each group was subdivided (n = 5) according to the final time point, 4 (M4), 7 (M7) and 30 days (M30). The animals' corneas were processed for morphological and immunohistochemical analysis for PCNA, MMP1, MMP2, MMP9, MT1-MMP and TIMP1. In M4, the levels of MMP2 were higher in GP and GR, and in M7, this behavior was only observed in the GP. In M30, more epithelial cells and MMP1 expression were found in GR than GP. In GR, cell proliferation was higher in M4 than at other time points and MMP2 expression was higher in M4 than M30. The PRP stimulates cell proliferation in the early phase (M4) of treatment when compared to other time points, different from other treatments. The use of eye drops of platelet-rich and poor plasma influences the expression of matrix metalloproteinases involved in the corneal repair process.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Introduction: The training of the nurse has been passive and traditional hence the concern of teachers to refocus education in response to today's context where the nurse is expected to assume a leading and participative role in patient care. Objective. To identify the degree of development of critical thinking in nursing students about the care of the obstetric patient following a participative educational strategy. Material and methods. Longitudinal intervention study in nursing students, which included a participatory educational strategy to develop critical thinking in the nursing process in a traditionally taught group. Critical thinking was assessed using 4 indicators in a purpose built instrument that was validated by expert methodological and disciplinary consensus (KR of 0.93). Non parametric statistical analysis using Mac Nemar. Results. When comparing the global ratings of both groups, there was a significant development in the participatory intervention group (p = 0.031). Conclusions. The participatory educational strategy favors development of complex cognitive skills such as critical thinking.

The objective of the present study was to measure pressure drops to obtain friction coefficients of non-Newtonian fluids. A transport system was employed using various piping transport systems through which test fluids were passed while measuring volumetric flows and pressure drops. The friction coefficients obtained for water as a reference fluid ranged from 0.42 to 25.7, and for solutions containing the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) were from 0.43 to 38.1. The friction coefficients increased with increases in the concentration, which allowed determination of a potential relation between this coefficient and the concentration of the salt for most of the fittings and type of pipes tested. The differences found when comparing the experimentally obtained values with those reported in the literature were attributed to the rheological behavior of the fluid, the circuit employed in transporting the fluid, and the so-called "mutual influence effect" of the pipe fittings.

Season effect on follicular dynamic and ovulation time were studied on 25 non-lactating Gir cows (10 cows in the winter and 15 in the summer) and 15 non-lactating Nelore cows (7cows in the winter and 8 in the summer) exhibiting normal estrus cycles. After estrus detection cows were submitted to ultrasound examination every six hours to determine the time of ovulation, and after that, the examinations were performed once-a-day throughout the estrus cycle for each season. No effect of breed and season on follicular characteristics was observed. The follicular dynamic was characterized by the predominance of three (68.0 and 66.7%) and two (24.0 and 26.7%) follicular waves for Gir and Nelore cows, respectively. The estrus-to-ovulation intervals were shorter for cycles with two follicular waves. Most estrus signs were detected in the morning (57.3%) and late afternoon (28.0%). On average, Gir and Nelore cows ovulated 23 hours after estrus onset.
