Abstract This study evaluated the presence of polyunsaturated fatty acids in circulating blood and in the ovarian follicular fluid of mares, after supplementation of the diet with linseed oil. Six Mangalarga Marchador mares, weighing 397.00±31.89 kg, were kept on native pasture, and assigned to the current study. In a switch over design, mares were randomly allocated to receive 150 ml of vegetable oil daily, containing polyunsaturated fatty acids n3 (62.23 g ALA, 20.34 g LA, 2.27 g EPA, 2.32 g DHA), (n=3) or no supplementation (n=3) in two replicates. Blood and follicular fluid samples were taken on the first day (D0) and every 30 days until the end of the supplementation period (D60). After 60 days of supplementation, mares were switched across the treatments. Plasma concentrations of linolenic acid in total fatty acids were higher (P=0.006) in the supplemented compared to the control group (1.89±0.13 vs. 1.49±0.13%). There were positive correlations between plasma linoleic acid and follicular fluid arachidonic acid (P=0.0106; r2=0.13) and between plasma alpha linolenic acid and follicular fluid EPA (P=0.0004; r2=0.2544). Data indicated a low to moderate relationship between the dietary linseed-based oil supplementation studied and circulating and follicular fluid polyunsaturated fatty acids contents in mares.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different bleaching sequences at different amounts of kaolin in paper properties. To do that, three different ECF bleaching sequences were taken to the same O2 -delignified eucalyptus pulp, these being D (E + P) DP (reference ECF), AHTD (E + P) DP (A-ECF) and AHT D (E + P) P (ECF-Light), 20 kg/t o.d. hydrogen peroxide in the final stage. The pulps were submitted to bleaching to obtain 90 ± 0.5% ISO brightness. After that, the replacement of the fiber by filler kaolin type in a proportion of 0% to 35% in increments of 5% were made for each pulp. The pulp sheets formed with a weight of 60 g/m2 were characterized for physical and mechanical properties. Fiber dimensions obtained for each bleaching sequence were also analyzed. The results showed that the bleaching sequence influence on both the retention due the size of fibers and the fines content generated by each bleaching sequence as well as the paper physical and mechanical properties for each kaolin content. The ECF-Light sequence showed better retention and paper produced with the pulp showed a better smoothness, while sequence OAHT (E + P) DP showed higher internal resistance and higher compressive strength. The ECF pulp showed better results for tear index, higher viscosity and yield and fiber quality. It was concluded that the greater the amount of kaolin in paper, the lower its mechanical strength.

AbstractEvening primrose (Oenothera biennis L., Onagraceae) seeds oil has great economic importance due to its wide industrial application, mainly for medicines and nutraceutics. However, to our knowledge, it remains almost unexplored regarding development of innovative formulations, such as nanoemulsions. On the present study, required Hydroprophile–Lipophile Balance of evening primrose seeds oil was determined (HLB 12) and a stable nanoemulsion (Day 1: mean droplet size: 214.3 ± 0.69 nm, polydispersity index: 0.253 ± 0.012. Day 7: mean droplet size: 202.8 ± 0.23 nm, polydispersity index: 0.231 ± 0.008) was achieved. Moreover, pseudo-ternary diagram allowed delimitation of nanoemulsion region, contributing to nanobiotechnology of natural products.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Copaiba (Copaifera duckei Dwyer, Fabaceae) oleoresin is an important Amazonian raw material. Despite its insecticidal potential, poor water solubility remains a challenge for the development of effective and viable products. Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising area to solve this problem, especially oil-in-water nanoemulsions. On this context, the aim of the present study was to develop oil-in-water nanoemulsions using copaiba oleoresin dispersed through a high internal phase; and evaluate its potential insecticidal action against Aedes aegypti larvae. Overall, 31 formulations were prepared, ranging from 11.5 ± 0.2 to 257.3 ± 4.1 nm after one day of manipulation. Some of them reached small mean droplet sizes (< 200 nm) and allowed achievement of a nanoemulsion region. The formulation consisted of 5% (w/w) of copaiba oil, 5% (w/w) of surfactant and 90% (w/w) of water, which presented mean droplet size of 145.2 ±0.9 nm and polidispersity of 0.378 ± 0.009 after one day of manipulation, and these were evaluated for larvicidal potential. According to mortality level (250 ppm - 93.3 after 48 h), this nanoemulsion was classified as a promising insecticidal agent against Aedes aegypti larvae. The present study allowed the development of low-cost ecofriendly green natural-based nanoformulations with potential larvicidal activity, using a nanobiotechnology approach.

Commercial sorghum hybrids and Embrapa's lines were evaluated regarding resistance to sugarcane borer. Two field experiments were conducted in Sete Lagoas, MG, under natural infestation, during the second cropping season in a randomized complete block with 3 replicates. The plants were evaluated regarding to stand, maturity cycle, plant height, and number of broken or lodging stalks and yield. The borer incidence, number of galleries, number of healthy and damaged nodes were also evaluated to calculate the Infestation Index and Intensity Infestation Index. Among the commercial sorghum hybrids, Br 304 and CMSXS 9701 were the least infested wile Z 732 and Esmeralda were the least damaged. Among the lines, the least infested was 9815017 and least damaged 9816003. The two indexes were correlated positively with plant height in both experiments and negatively correlated with the lines cycle. However, there was no correlation between the Indexes for the hybrids. Among the lines the data fit to a logarithmic curve. Although there is a significant variability among commercial sorghum hybrids regarding sugarcane borer susceptibility, under high borer density, a significant yield loss can be computed to all hybrids. On the other hand, the genetic variability regarding sugarcane borer resistance among the sorghum lines indicated a significant potential for use in a breeding program of resistant cultivars.
