This study evaluated the dynamic behavior of total and compartmental chest wall volumes [(V CW) = rib cage (V RC) + abdomen (V AB)] as measured breath-by-breath by optoelectronic plethysmography during constant-load exercise in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Thirty males (GOLD stages II-III) underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test to the limit of tolerance (Tlim) at 75% of peak work rate on an electronically braked cycle ergometer. Exercise-induced dynamic hyperinflation was considered to be present when end-expiratory (EE) V CW increased in relation to resting values. There was a noticeable heterogeneity in the patterns of V CW regulation as EEV CW increased non-linearly in 17/30 "hyperinflators" and decreased in 13/30 "non-hyperinflators" (P < 0.05). EEV AB decreased slightly in 8 of the "hyperinflators", thereby reducing and slowing the rate of increase in end-inspiratory (EI) V CW (P < 0.05). In contrast, decreases in EEV CW in the "non-hyperinflators" were due to the combination of stable EEV RC with marked reductions in EEV AB. These patients showed lower EIV CW and end-exercise dyspnea scores but longer Tlim than their counterparts (P < 0.05). Dyspnea increased and Tlim decreased non-linearly with a faster rate of increase in EIV CW regardless of the presence or absence of dynamic hyperinflation (P < 0.001). However, no significant between-group differences were observed in metabolic, pulmonary gas exchange and cardiovascular responses to exercise. Chest wall volumes are continuously regulated during exercise in order to postpone (or even avoid) their migration to higher operating volumes in patients with COPD, a dynamic process that is strongly dependent on the behavior of the abdominal compartment.

Estudaram-se os efeitos da geleia real sobre a espermatogênese de coelhos tratados com diferentes concentrações de geleia real. Os tratamentos foram formados por três grupos: grupo-controle; grupo que recebeu 0,5mg/dia de geleia real; e grupo que recebeu 1,0mg/dia de geleia real. O estudo envolveu a morfometria testicular. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos quanto aos pesos corporal (T1=3,20±0,19kg, T2=2,96±0,30kg e T3=3,21±0,37kg) e gonadal (T1=2,36±0,33g, T2=2,53±0,33g e T3=2,64±0,39g) e quanto aos índices gonadossomático (T1=0,15±0,02%, T2=0,17±0,03% e T3=0,16±0,02%) e tubulossomático (T1=0,06±0,01%; T2=0,07±0,01% e T3=0,06±0,01%). O diâmetro médio dos túbulos seminíferos (T1=225,95±13,27µm, T2=239,68±21,50µm e T3=231,57±15,94µm), a altura do epitélio seminífero (T1=66,05±5,37µm, T2= 73,47±9,11µm e T3=63,34±4,79µm) e o comprimento de túbulos seminíferos por testículo (T1=46,63±13,44m, T2=43,58±12,17m e T3=46,96±9,54m) e por grama de testículo (T1=19,50±2,68m, T2=17,12±3,91m e T3=17,78±1,98m) não diferiram entre tratamentos. Conclui-se que a suplementação com geleia real, nas doses utilizadas, não altera as características testiculares avaliadas.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of royal jelly on spermatogenesis in rabbits treated with different concentrations of RJ (Control; 0,5mg/day; and 1,0mg/day) using testicular morphometry. There was no significant difference between the body weight (T1= 3.20±0.19kg; T2= 2.96±0.30kg; T3=3.21±0.37kg) and gonadal weight (T1= 2.36±0.33g; T2= 2.53±0.33g; T3= 2.64±0.39g), gonadossomatic index (T1= 0.15±0.02%; T2= 0.17±0.03%. T3= 0.16±0.02%) and tubulossomatic index (T1= 0.06±0.01%; T2= 0.07±0.01%. T3= 0.06±0.01%) between treatments, showing that the percentage of body mass, and the percentage of seminiferous tubules allocated in testis were similar in the 3 experimental groups. Similarly, the mean diameter of the seminiferous tubules (T1= 225.95±13.27µm; T2=239.68±21.50µm; T3= 231.57±15,94µm), the height of the seminiferous epithelium (T1=66,05±5,37µm; T2=73.47±9.11µm; T3=63.34±4.79 µm) and length of seminiferous tubule for testis (T1=46.63±13.44m; T2=43.58±12.17m; T3=46.96±9.54m) and per gram of testis (T1=19.50±2.68m; T2=17.12±3.91m; T3=17.78±1.98m) did not differ statistically. It was concluded that supplementation with royal jelly, at the doses used, did not alter the testicular parameters evaluated here.

Foi feito um levantamento no estado do Amazonas, na região da capital Manaus, na base de exploração de petróleo de Urucu (700 km a sudoeste de Manaus) e em Presidente Figueiredo (100 km ao norte de Manaus) à procura de vírus transmitidos por ácaros Brevipalpus (VTrB) em diferentes espécies de plantas. Foram coletadas 33 espécies de plantas caracterizadas por lesões localizadas em folhas (manchas cloróticas, manchas anelares, manchas verdes em folhas senescentes) e pela presença de ácaros Brevipalpus (os quais foram coletados para identificação e avaliação de sua diversidade) em plantas cultivadas, ornamentais e silvestres. Fragmentos das lesões foram fixados no local e processados para microscopia eletrônica ultraestrutural e examinados em Piracicaba, SP. Foram constatados treze casos positivos de detecção de efeitos citopáticos do tipo citoplasmático ou nuclear de VTrB nas plantas coletadas em Manaus. Três deles parecem representar casos anteriormente descritos de VTrB em Hibiscus rosa sinensis, H. syriacus e Clerodendrum x speciosum. Presumíveis VTrB do tipo nuclear foram constatados em mancha clorótica em Piper callosum (Piperaceae), mancha clorótica anelar em Monstera deliciosa (Araceae), mancha clorótica em Ruellia chartacea (Acanthaceae), manchas cloróticas em Bidens sp. (Asteraceae), mancha verde em Allamanda chatartica (Apocynaceae), mancha clorótica em Gardenia sp. (Rubiaceae), mancha verde em Mussaenda erythrophylla (Rubiacea) e do tipo citoplasmático em mancha clorótica em Clerodendrum speciosissimum (Lamiaceae) e mancha anular em Arundina graminifolia (Orchidaceae). Todas estas plantas achavam-se naturalmente infestadas por Brevipalpus phoenicis.

A survey of Brevipalpus-transmitted plant viruses (BTrV) was carried out in the cities of Manaus and Presidente Figueiredo, and in the oil exploratory base of Urucu, Amazonas State, Central Amazon Basin, Brazil. The main characteristics considered during the survey were the occurrence of localized symptoms (chlorotic or brown spots, ringspots, green spots in senescent leaves) similar to those previously described for BTrV and infestation by Brevipalpus mites. For the evaluation of the infection by putative BTrV, small fragments of the leaf lesions were fixed in loco and later processed for ultrastructural electron microscopy at Piracicaba, SP. Thirteen plant hosts of presumed BTrV were found. Three of them probably represent previously described BTrV infecting Hibiscus rosa sinensis, H. syriacus and Clerodendrum x speciosum. For the first time we report cases of infection by putative BTrV of nuclear type in chlorotic spot in Piper callosum (Piperaceae), chlorotic ringspot in Monstera deliciosa (Araceae), chlorotic spot in Ruellia chartacea (Acanthaceae), chlorotic spot in Bidens sp. (Asteraceae), green spot in Allamanda chatartica (Apocynaceae), chlorotic spot in Gardenia sp. (Rubiaceae), chlorotic ringspot and green spot in Mussaenda erythrophylla. (Rubiaceae) and of cytoplasmic type in Clerodendrum speciosissimum (Lamiaceaae) and ringspots in Arundina graminifolia (Orchidaceae). All these plants were infested by Brevipalpu. phoenicis.

Rats implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus or the entorhinal cortex were submitted to either a one-trial inhibitory avoidance task, or to 5 min of habituation to an open field. Immediately after training, they received intrahippocampal or intraentorhinal 0.5-µl infusions of saline, of a vehicle (2% dimethylsulfoxide in saline), of the glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist 2-amino-5-phosphono pentanoic acid (AP5), of the protein kinase A inhibitor Rp-cAMPs (0.5 µg/side), of the calcium-calmodulin protein kinase II inhibitor KN-62, of the dopaminergic D1 antagonist SCH23390, or of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor PD098059. Animals were tested in each task 24 h after training. Intrahippocampal KN-62 was amnestic for habituation; none of the other treatments had any effect on the retention of this task. In contrast, all of them strongly affected memory of the avoidance task. Intrahippocampal Rp-cAMPs, KN-62 and AP5, and intraentorhinal Rp-cAMPs, KN-62, PD098059 and SCH23390 caused retrograde amnesia. In view of the known actions of the treatments used, the present findings point to important biochemical differences in memory consolidation processes of the two tasks.
