Abstract Stomoxys calcitrans causes losses to livestock, mainly to cattle. This study aimed to determine the pathogenic potential of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 and H. baujardi LPP7 against S. calcitrans larvae after being exposed to byproducts of the sugar and alcohol industry. The efficacy of EPNs on stable fly larvae was evaluated in bioassays with vinasse at three temperatures (16, 25 and 35 °C) and concentrations (0, 50 and 100%), as well as in relation to larva age (4, 6 and 8 days) in filter cake and EPNs concentration (100, 300 and 500 IJs/larva) in sugarcane bagasse. H. bacteriophora showed higher efficacy than H. baujardi at all temperatures. Vinasse did not have a negative effect on the virulence of H. bacteriophora. The age of fly larvae did not affect the mortality rates caused by the EPNs. In bagasse, H. bacteriophora presented higher mortality rates than the control group. It is concluded that EPNs can be a potential component in integrated strategies of stable fly control and outbreak prevention in areas of sugar and alcohol production.

Resumo Stomoxys calcitrans causa perdas à agropecuária, principalmente na bovinocultura. Este estudo objetivou verificar o potencial patogênico de Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 e H. baujardi LPP7 para larvas de S. calcitrans, após serem expostos a subprodutos da indústria sucroalcooleira. A eficácia dos NEPs sobre larvas da mosca-dos-estábulos foi avaliada em bioensaios com vinhaça em três temperaturas (16, 25 e 35 °C) e concentrações (0, 50 e 100%), bem como em relação à idade da larva (4, 6 e 8 dias) em torta de filtro e concentração de NEPs (100, 300 e 500 JIs/larva) em bagaço de cana-de-açúcar. H. bacteriophora apresentou maior eficácia do que H. baujardi em todas as temperaturas. O vinhoto não apresentou efeito negativo sobre a virulência de H. bacteriophora. A idade das larvas não influenciou no aumento ou diminuição da mortalidade dos NEPs. Em bagaço de cana, H. bacteriophora apresentou taxas de mortalidade superiores à do grupo controle. Conclui-se que os NEPs podem ser um potencial componente em estratégias de controle integrado e prevenção de surtos da mosca-dos-estábulos, em áreas de produção de açúcar e álcool.

Resumo Stomoxys calcitrans é um díptero hematófago. Vários agentes são usados no controle biológico, incluindo nematoides entomopatogênicos (NEPs). O bioensaio I objetivou avaliar o efeito de Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 e Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 sobre larvas de S. calcitrans em diferentes períodos de exposição. Grupos de 10 larvas foram colocados em placas de Petri, adicionou-se 200 NEPs/larva, e foram divididos de acordo com tempos de exposição de 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 e 48 horas. O objetivo do Bioensaio II foi avaliar a eficácia dos NEPs na infecção de larvas de S. calcitrans, quando esses foram isolados de larvas da mosca oriundos do Bioensaio I. Os grupos de 10 larvas foram colocados em placas de Petri e 200 NEPs/larva foram adicionados. No bioensaio I, H. bacteriophora causou taxas de mortalidade de 51,7%, 83,3% e 91,7% em 12, 24 e 48 horas, respectivamente, enquanto H. baujardi causou taxas de mortalidade de 9,3% (12h), 35% (24h) e 35% (48h). No Bioensaio II, H. bacteriophora e H. baujardi resultaram em taxas de mortalidade de 35% e 25%, respectivamente. Concluiu-se que os maiores tempos de exposição apresentaram as maiores mortalidades larvais e que NEPs isolados de S. calcitrans não são eficientes no controle das larvas mosca.

Abstract Stomoxys calcitrans is a hematophagous dipteran. Several agents are used in biological control, including entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). Bioassay I involved an evaluation of the effect of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 and Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 on S. calcitrans larvae in different periods of exposure. Groups of 10 larvae were placed in Petri dishes and 200 EPNs/larva were added, which were divided into groups according to the exposure times of 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours. The purpose of Bioassay II was to evaluate the efficacy of the EPNs in infecting S. calcitrans larvae when they were isolated from stable fly larvae in Bioassay I. Groups of 10 larvae were placed in Petri dishes and 200 EPNs/larva were added. In bioassay I, H. bacteriophora caused mortality rates of 51.7, 83.3 and 91.7% in 12, 24 and 48 hours, respectively, while H. baujardi caused mortality rates of 9.3 (12h), 35 (24h) and 35% (48h). In Bioassay II, H. bacteriophora and H. baujardi resulted in mortality rates of 35% and 25%, respectively. It was concluded that the longest exposure times presented the highest larval mortality and that EPNs isolated from S. calcitrans are not efficient in controlling the larvae fly.

Abstract In this work, NRL films were enriched with red propolis and silver nanoparticles with the aim of obtaining dressings with bactericide properties. To improve the properties of these materials, plasma treatment was also applied to the films. Cytotoxic effects were evaluated by MTT and agar diffusion assays on secondary and stem cells. Determination of cell behavior on the films were assessed by EDS and FEG-SEM. In general, the plasma modified NRL films presented hydrophilic character, favorable condition for biomedical applications. RBS results showed that silver is probably in nanoparticulate form. MTT assays revealed that non-cytotoxic effects were observed for all the samples extracts. Either the plasma treatment or silver deposition were effective in sterilizing the samples and modifying their surfaces. It was demonstrated in this in vitro study that ADSCs associated with NRL films enriched with propolis should be considered promising for application in the healing of occlusive wounds.

INTRODUÇÃO: O Comitê de Nutrição da Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia (SBN) realizou, em 2010, o primeiro Censo Brasileiro de Nutrição em pacientes em Hemodiálise. Dados multicêntricos contribuem para o desenvolvimento de condutas clínicas e intervenção nutricional. OBJETIVO: Descrever aspectos nutricionais e epidemiológicos de pacientes em hemodiálise. MÉTODO: Estudo transversal em 36 clínicas de diálise, 2.622 participantes selecionados aleatoriamente. Foram coletados: registros sociodemográficos, clínicos, bioquímicos e antropométricos. RESULTADOS: Dos pacientes, 60,45% era da região Sudeste, 13,53% Nordeste, 12,81% Sul, 10,33% Centro-Oeste e 2,86% Norte. Cerca de 58% eram homens e 63,1% tinham menos de 60 anos. Casados ou em união estável, 58,5% deles. Aproximadamente 80% dependia do Sistema Único de Saúde. O tabagismo apresentou diferença entre sexo e idade. As etiologias presuntivas foram nefroesclerose hipertensiva 26,4%, nefropatia diabética 24,6%, causas desconhecidas/não diagnosticadas 19,9%, glomerulopatias 13,6% e outros 11,2%. A hipertensão arterial e o Diabetes Mellitus acometiam aproximadamente 30% dos pacientes, principalmente aqueles acima de 60 anos. O Índice de Massa Corporal não diferiu entre sexos, embora tenha diferido entre grupos etários e quando utilizados critérios de avaliação distintos. A média de circunferência da cintura de homens e mulheres foi, respectivamente, 90,5 cm e 88,0 cm. O perfil lipídico não diferiu entre às faixas etárias, porém, houve diferenças entre sexos. Os valores de albumina estiveram menores nas mulheres e em pacientes com idade superior a 60 anos. CONCLUSÃO: O estudo caracterizou os pacientes em hemodiálise no Brasil em 2010, podendo subsidiar novos estudos para acompanhamento de transições nutricionais e epidemiológicas da população.

INTRODUCTION: The Nutrition Committee of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN) held in 2010 the first Brazilian Nutrition Census in hemodialysis patients. Multicenter data contribute to clinical development and nutritional intervention. OBJECTIVE: To describe epidemiological and nutritional aspects of hemodialysis patients. METHOD: Cross-sectional study in 36 dialysis clinics and 2,622 randomly selected participants. Socio-demographical, clinical, biochemical and anthropometric records were collected. RESULTS: 60.45% of the patients lived in the Brazilian Southeast. 13.53% came from Northeast region, while 12.81% from South, 10.33% from Midwest and 2.86% from North regions. Approximately 58% were male and 63.1% were below 60 years old. 58.5% of patients were married or in cohabitation. Around 80% of them depended on the government Unified Health System. Smoking showed a difference between gender and age. Presumptive etiologies were Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis (26.4%), Diabetic Nephropathy (24.6%), unknown/undiagnosed causes (19.9%), Glomerulopathies (13.6%) and others (11.2%). Both Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus affect approximately 30% of patients, especially over 60 years. Body Mass Index did not differ between genders, although it differed between age groups and when used different evaluation criteria. Men and women average waist circumference were respectively 90.5 and 88.0 cm. Lipid profile did not differ between age groups, but it did between genders. Albumin values were lower in women and in patients older than 60 years. CONCLUSION: This study characterized Brazilian hemodialysis patients in 2010, and may support further studies to monitor nutrition and epidemiological transitions of the population.

Distribution, longevity and migration of Cyathostominae free living stages have been studied in differents types of climate in the World. Few works exist on this subject in South America. The objective of this research was evaluating survival and migration in Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp. cv. Tifton 85) sward in tropical climate. Fecal plots were monthly placed on pasture Tifton, from September of 2003 to September of 2004. Sward and faeces were collected weekly, at 8 a.m., 1 and 5 p.m. and processed by Baermann technique. L3survival on faeces varied from four to nine weeks in rainy period and from eight to 15 weeks in dry period, with higher recovered in rainy period. In the pasture,larvae longevity varied from two to eight weeks in rainy period and from five to 13 weeks in dry period, with higher L3 recovery in dry period. The multivariable weeks in dry period, with higher L3 recovery in dry period. The multivariable analysis of main components evidenced the influence of time and environmental variables on the number of recovered larvae from faeces and pasture. Climatic conditions influenced the development, survival and migration of infective larvae. L3 were recovered during the three times of collection and no significant difference was observed among three times. The study results demonstrated that in tropical climate conditions Cyathostominae L3 are available on faeces and pasture during whole months of the year

A distribuicao, longevidade e migracao de larvas infectantes de ciatostomíneos de equinos vem sendo estudada em diferentes tipos de clima no Mundo. Poucos trabalhos existem sobre este tema na América do Sul. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avahar a sobrevivencia e a migracao em gramínea Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp. cv.Tifton 85) sob condicoes de clima tropical. Massas fecais foram depositadas mensalmente na gramínea Tifton, no período de Setembro de 2003 a Setembro de 2004.Gramínea e fezes foram coletadas a cada sete dias, as 8, 12 e 17 h e processadas pela técnica de Baermann para recuperacao de L3. Ñas fezes, a sobrevivencia das L3 variou de quatro a nove semanas no período chuvoso e oito a 15 semanas no período seco, com maior recuperacao durante o período chuvoso. Na gramínea, a longevidade das larvas variou de duas a oito semanas no período chuvoso e cinco a 13 semanas no período seco, com maior recuperacao das larvas infectantes no período seco. A análise multivariada de componentes principáis evidenciou a influencia do tempo e das variáveis ambientáis sobre o número de larvas recuperadas das fezes e da gramínea. As condicoes climáticas influenciaram no desenvolvimento, na sobrevivencia e migracao das larvas infectantes. As L3 foram recuperadas durante os tres horarios de coleta e nao se observou diferenca significativa entre os horarios. Os resultados do estudo demonstraram que em condicoes de clima tropical as L3 de ciatostomíneos estáo disponíveis ñas fezes e na pastagem, durante todo os meses do ano
