ABSTRACT Fresh corn is a highly appreciated vegetable in Brazil; this crop has high added value and profitability when compared to dry corn. Despite the consumer market demand for quality, cultivars are not launched every crop season and there is a small number of cultivars available to growers. This denotes a need for breeding programs focused on generating information and genotypes that can occupy this market niche. The objective of this work was to evaluate the progress of five cycles of intrapopulation recurrent selection in half-sib progenies of fresh corn, in the southwest region of Goiás. A randomized block experimental design was used, with evaluation of 64 progenies of corn half-sib progenies and selection intensity of 30% per cycle, with three replications, in the 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016, 2017-2018, and 2020-2021 summer crop seasons. The half-sib progenies of fresh corn exhibited genetic variability through intrapopulation recurrent selection in the different selection cycles, which is still promising for further selections after five cycles, with evaluation of 64 progenies per cycle. The base population from crossings between hybrids for tropical and temperate climates showed to be promising for increasing the genetic base of fresh corn populations, with satisfactory gains over the five cycles, presenting mean heritability between the cycles of approximately 78.9% for relative chlorophyll index, 62.2% for plant height, 75.1% for ear insertion height, 70% for ear diameter, 56.6% for ear length, 71.4% for unhusked ear yield, and 71% for marketable ear yield.

ABSTRACT Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) has been attracting great interest due to the beauty of the colors of flowers, the firmness of stems, and postharvest durability. However, knowledge of lisianthus irrigation and fertigation has generally been based on recommendations from other countries. This study aimed to establish parameters for the rational management of lisianthus fertigation under a protected environment by determining the best lower limit of soil moisture, associated with the determination of the optimal potassium concentration to be maintained in the soil solution. The treatments consisted of five soil moisture limits for the start of irrigation and maintenance of five potassium concentrations in the soil solution, with four replications. Plots of 0.7 by 0.5 m were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a factorial scheme. The soil solution was monitored by measuring moisture as well as potassium (K+) concentrations using a TDR100 reflectometer and solution extractors, respectively, during two cycles. The evaluated variables were the leaf area index, shoot fresh and dry matter, commercial yield, and average stem diameter. Lisianthus cultivation under the lower limit of soil moisture equal to 0.20 cm3 cm−3 ensured the best results for all variables of commercial interest. No effect of potassium concentrations was observed on variables of commercial interest.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Much is said and written regarding alchemy all across the world, in what could be called a renaissance of alchemical studies. However, relatively little is done in terms of actual alchemical laboratory work. The aim of the project described herein was to show how crucial the development of technical alchemical practice was along the centuries, in the discovery of an immense number of substances, processes and operations, which were of paramount importance in the establishment of modern chemistry. Alchemy is often derided in many circles. On the contrary, for two thousand years it constituted the basis of humankind’s understanding of the material world and the changes undergone by compounds and materials. Here we present an experimental reconstitution of several alchemical discoveries of great importance, using old descriptions followed by modern characterizations. The results were often startling and demonstrated how ancient wisdom bore fruit in different ways, even in the absence of our present-day means of analysis.

ABSTRACT The practice of using different photo-selective nets, associated with the technique of fertigation, represents a new agrotechnological concept that aims to promote specific physiological responses for growth and production, which are regulated by light. The aims of the study were to evaluate the effect of photo-selective nets and potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution on the horticultural performance of Costus lasius. The study was conducted at the Universidade de São Paulo, ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Three experiments were carried out separately to evaluate five potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution (40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 mg L-1) under three colours of photo-selective nets (red, blue and black) in a randomized block design, with five repetitions. The variables plant height and numbers of leaves, stems and flower buds were evaluated. The data were submitted to the joint analysis of experiments. The association between the K+ concentration of 200 mg L-1 and the black photo-selective net results in higher stem and inflorescence production.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

When well utilized, organic residues lead to great benefits making organic matter and nutrients available in soils. In this context, the present study had the objective to evaluate the effect of organic compost doses on two soils submitted to different compactions and on corn biomass. Thus, in 54 pots were added three doses 0, 40 or 80 g dm-3 of organic compost in a Dark Red Argisoil or Red Yellowish Argisoil, collected from the Ap horizon (depth of 0 to 0.20 m), submitted to three compaction degrees (1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 kg dm-3), with three replications. The crop used in the experiment was corn (Zea mays), cultivar Itapuã 700. The plant growth, and content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and organic carbon (TOC) in soil were evaluated. The results point out that the organic compost application significantly affected soil OC and macronutrients, but little effect was induced by the soil compaction on these variables.

The objective of the this study was to evaluate the effect of organic compost and compaction levels of two soils on shoot dry weight and macronutrient contents of corn (Zea mays), cultivar Itapoã 700. In 54 pots, three doses of the processed organic compost residue from Recife Central Market were applied in two soils, one being a dark red Argissoil (DRA) and the other a yellow red Argissoil (YRA), collected in Ap horizon (0 to 0.20 m depth) and under three compaction levels in a factorial arrangement 2 × 3 × 3 with three replications. Shoot dry matter and N, P, K, Ca and Mg contents were evaluated. The results indicate that soil compaction does not affect corn growth. The organic compost application increased K and Ca but decreased Mg content in shoots. Calcium content in corn shoot increased with the organic compost in DRA soil, but was found to decrease in YRA soil.
