RESUMO Contexto: a análise fatorial exploratória (AFE) é um dos métodos estatísticos mais utilizados em administração. No entanto, sua prática corrente coexiste com regras de bolso e heurísticas proferidas há meio século. Objetivo: o propósito deste artigo é apresentar as melhores práticas e recomendações recentes para uma AFE típica em administração através de uma solução prática acessível aos pesquisadores. Métodos: nesse sentido, além de serem discutidas as práticas correntes versus as práticas recomendadas, ilustra-se um tutorial com dados reais no Factor, um software ainda pouco conhecido na área de administração, porém freeware, fácil de usar (point and click) e poderoso. O passo a passo ilustrado no artigo, além das discussões levantadas e de um exemplo adicional, também é disponibilizado no formato de vídeos tutoriais. Conclusão: através da metodologia didática proposta (artigo-tutorial + vídeo-tutorial), incentivamos os pesquisadores/metodologistas que dominam alguma técnica particular a fazerem o mesmo. Especificamente sobre a AFE, esperamos que a apresentação do software Factor, como uma primeira solução, possa transcender as regras de bolso e heurísticas correntes ultrapassadas, ao tornar acessíveis as melhores práticas para os pesquisadores da administração.

ABSTRACT Context: exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is one of the statistical methods most widely used in administration; however, its current practice coexists with rules of thumb and heuristics given half a century ago. Objective: the purpose of this article is to present the best practices and recent recommendations for a typical EFA in administration through a practical solution accessible to researchers. Methods: in this sense, in addition to discussing current practices versus recommended practices, a tutorial with real data on Factor is illustrated. The Factor software is still little known in the administration area, but is freeware, easy-to-use (point and click), and powerful. The step-by-step tutorial illustrated in the article, in addition to the discussions raised and an additional example, is also available in the format of tutorial videos. Conclusion: through the proposed didactic methodology (article-tutorial + video-tutorial), we encourage researchers/methodologists who have mastered a particular technique to do the same. Specifically about EFA, we hope that the presentation of the Factor software, as a first solution, can transcend the current outdated rules of thumb and heuristics, by making best practices accessible to administration researchers.

RESUMO Este trabalho buscou investigar a relação entre diversificação, bem-estar financeiro (BEF) e qualidade de vida (QV) e saúde mental, e compreender como o BEF medeia essa relação, considerando uma amostra de 1.047 investidores brasileiros cadastrados na Comissão de Valores Mobiliários (CVM). Na literatura nacional e internacional, não foram encontrados estudos que buscassem identificar o papel mediador do BEF entre a diversificação e a QV e a saúde mental, como se propõe neste estudo. Esta pesquisa pode auxiliar corretoras e instituições financeiras, possibilitando um novo olhar sobre o perfil dos investidores e suas carteiras. Ainda, amplia as perspectivas sobre os estudos de finanças pessoais e saúde mental no Brasil e no mundo. A mediação foi realizada por modelagem de equações estruturais estimada por mínimos quadrados robustos ponderados na diagonal (robust diagonally weighted least squares [RDWLS]). Como proxy de diversificação, adotou-se “classes de ativos”. Para QV, adotou-se a escala World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-100), enquanto para mensurar saúde mental (depressão e ansiedade) usaram-se os inventários de Beck. Para BEF, utilizou-se a medida do Serviço de Proteção ao Crédito (SPC) do Brasil. Os resultados apontaram forte relação de mediação do BEF entre o grau de diversificação (classes de ativos) e as escalas de QV e saúde mental (ansiedade e depressão). Constatou-se que o nível de diversificação está relacionado com o aumento dos níveis de ansiedade e depressão e com a redução da QV no curto prazo, mas, quando mediado pelo BEF, reduz os níveis de ansiedade e depressão e aumenta a QV.

ABSTRACT This study sought to investigate the relationship between diversification, financial well-being (FWB), quality of life (QoL), and mental health, and to see how FWB mediates this relationship, considering a sample of 1,047 Brazilian investors registered with the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (Comissão de Valores Mobiliários [CVM]). In the national and international literature, no studies were found that sought to identify the mediating role of FWB between diversification, QoL, and mental health, as proposed in this study. This research may help brokers and financial institutions, allowing a new look at the profile of investors and their portfolios. It also widens the perspectives on studies of personal finance and mental health in Brazil and around the world. Mediation was conducted through structural equation modeling estimated by robust diagonally weighted least squares (RDWLS). ‘Asset classes’ was adopted as a proxy for diversification. For QoL, the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-100) scale was adopted, while the Beck inventories were used to measure mental health (depression and anxiety). For FWB, the measure of the Brazilian Credit Protection Service (Serviço de Proteção ao Crédito [SPC Brasil]) was used. The results showed a strong relationship between the FWB mediation between the diversification degree (asset classes) and the QoL and mental health scales (anxiety and depression). It was found that the diversification level is related to increased levels of anxiety and depression and decreased QoL in the short term, but when mediated by FWB, it decreases the anxiety and depression levels and increases QoL.

ABSTRACT Aeginecta longicauda n. gen., n. sp. is described from material collected from a seasonally astatic aquatic habitat in Argentina. It is only known from the type locality and two male specimens; at this point the female remains unknown. Specific unique gonopod and genital segment features demonstrate that this taxon represents a unique genus within the Thamnocephalidae. Aeginecta n. gen most closely resembles Phallocryptus Biraben, 1951 and Thamnocephalus Packard, 1877. This new genus is easily diagnosed by the compound eye peduncle being extremely short, the frons and anterior surface of antennae II broadened laterally, with an intervening slit through which the compound eye may view the area forward on the animal, and the cercopods are as long as the abdomen. The gonopod proximal portion is bulbous with a transverse cleft, and projects ventrally from the segment. The gonopod distal eversible portion is minute, lamellar, and lies within proximal portion cleft. This is the fifth thamnocephalid genus reported from South America. The Neotropical region has the greatest thamnocephalid generic diversity in the world.

O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar se os tipos das book-tax differences são úteis na previsão de resultados futuros de companhias abertas de cinco países da América Latina. Isso é possível uma vez que essas diferenças trazem informações sobre os componentes transitórios dos resultados, que podem ser utilizados pelos investidores para previsão de resultados futuros. Todavia, pouco se sabe sobre a relação entre variáveis fiscais e os resultados futuros das empresas. A amostra aqui analisada é composta por 580 companhias abertas de cinco países (Argentina, Brasil, Chile, México e Peru) membros da América Latina com informações disponíveis na base de dados Economática(r) no período de 2002 a 2013. Em termos metodológicos, utiliza-se regressões para buscar a associação entre os tipos (total, permanente, temporária e as variações positivas e negativas) dasbook-tax differences com os lucros correntes e futuros por ação das empresas, além de algumas variáveis de controle sugeridas pela literatura prévia. Os coeficientes do modelo foram estimados pelas técnicas de dados em painel: fixed effects. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que as informações apreendidas nos tipos de book-tax differences (total, permanente, temporária, variações positivas e negativas) são relevantes para a previsão de resultados futuros. As diferenças totais, permanentes e temporárias contribuem para as incertezas na previsão dos resultados futuros, visto que os resultados são mais transitórios e menos persistentes em anos com maiores book-tax differences. As variações negativas e positivas, ao contrário, sinalizam maiores resultados vindouros em anos seguintes a maiores variações nas book-tax differences, representando maior tempestividade dos resultados e redução no financiamento fora do balanço das companhias abertas de tais países.

This study aims to investigate whether the different types of book-tax differences are useful for predicting the future income of publicly traded companies in five Latin American countries. This is possible since these differences convey information about transitory components of income, which can be used by investors for predicting future income. However, little is known about the relationship between tax variables and companies' future results. The sample analyzed here is composed of 580 publicly traded companies from five Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru) with information available in the Economatica(r) database covering 2002 to 2013. In terms of methodology, regressions are employed in order to find a connection between the different types (total, permanent, temporary, and the negative and positive variations) of book-tax differences and companies' current and future earnings per share, as well as some control variables suggested by previous literature. The model's coefficients were estimated through panel data techniques: fixed effects. The results obtained suggest that the information gathered in the different types of book-tax differences (total, permanent, temporary, positive and negative variations) is relevant in predicting future income. Total, permanent and temporary differences contribute to the uncertainty in future income prediction, given that results are more transitory and less persistent in years with higher book-tax differences. Positive and negative variations, on the other hand, attribute higher income in coming years to greater variations in book-tax differences, representing increased timeliness of results and a reduction in off balance sheet funding for the publicly traded companies from these countries.

Abstract This study analyzes the impact of imminent reclassification of credit rating on the decision-making regarding capital structure of non-financial corporations listed in Latin America. Despite the importance attributed by the market agents and the existence of empirical evidence of the effect caused by rating in the capital structure of companies in developed countries, this issue is still incipient in Latin-American countries. For this purpose, all the non-financial corporation owners of, at least one corporate rating issued by an international rating agency were taken into account, with the requirement of being listed on a stock exchange in at least one Latin-American country. Through a data panel analysis comprising the period between 2001 and 2010 and by making use of the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), the main results that were achieved did not indicate that non-financial corporations listed in Latin America, with imminent reclassification of ratings, adopt less debts than those without an imminent reclassification of their ratings. These findings suggest that the imminent reclassifications of credit ratings do not present important information for managers of non-financial corporations in Latin America when making decisions about capital structure.

Um dos principais objetivos da adoção das Normas Internacionais de Contabilidade (International Financial Reporting Standards - IFRS) é a busca da comparabilidade entre as demonstrações financeiras dentro de um mesmo país, ao longo do tempo, e entre países diferentes. As IFRS têm a característica de permitir escolhas contábeis na maioria de suas normas. Entretanto, a existência dessa flexibilidade no processo de reconhecimento, mensuração e divulgação de ativos e passivos pode impactar a comparabilidade. As IFRS foram criticadas tanto pelas escolhas contábeis que contêm como pela introdução do paradigma do valor justo. Este artigo analisa essas duas questões, investigando a escolha do modelo de custos versus a escolha do modelo de valor justo para propriedades para investimento (PPI), uma opção assegurada por força da Norma Internacional de Contabilidade (International Accounting Standard - IAS) 40. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi identificar o grau de comparabilidade e os fatores que determinaram as escolhas contábeis feitas pelos gestores de PPI, de companhias abertas brasileiras e portuguesas, nos períodos de 2010 a 2012. A comparabilidade, dentro dos e entre os países, foi identificada pelo índice T e a busca pelos fatores determinantes das escolhas contábeis feitas pelos gestores foi realizada por meio de uma análise de regressão logística. Como resultado, constatou-se que, apesar das escolhas contábeis permitidas pela IAS 40, houve uma comparabilidade média entre as práticas contábeis das entidades desses países, porém, com decréscimo do índice ao longo dos anos. Os fatores explicativos identificados foram a auditoria por uma das big four (PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, KPMG ou Ernst & Young), o endividamento das empresas, a relevância relativa do saldo de PPI, o lucro líquido e a menor experiência do Brasil na utilização do método do valor justo para avaliação das PPI.

One of the main purposes for adopting the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is the quest for comparability between financial statements within the same country, over time, and between different countries. IFRS have the feature of allowing accounting choices in most of their standards. However, the existence of such flexibility in the process for recognizing, measuring, and disclosing as sets and liabilities may impact on comparability. IFRS have been criticized both due to their accounting choices and the adoption of the fair value paradigm. This article examines these two issues, investigating the choice of the cost model versus the choice of the fair value model for investment properties (IPs), an option guaranteed under the terms of the International Accounting Standard (IAS) 40. This research aimed to identify the comparability degree and the factors that determine the accounting choices made by managers of IPs, in Brazilian and Portuguese listed companies, within the periods from 2010 to 2012. Comparability, within and between countries, was identified by the T-index and the search for the determining factors of accounting choices made by managers was performed by means of a logistic re gression analysis. As a result, it was found that, despite the accounting choices allowed by IAS 40, there was a mean comparability between the accounting practices of firms in these countries, but showing a decrease in the index over the years. The explanatory factors identified were auditing by one of the big four (PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, KPMG, or Ernst & Young), companies' indeb tedness, relative importance of IPs' balance, net profit, and less experience of Brazil in using the fair value method to appraise IPs.

O objetivo deste estudo é investigar a contribuição de variáveis psicológicas e de escalas sugeridas pela Psicologia Econômica na previsão da inadimplência de pessoas físicas. Portanto, uma amostra de 555 indivíduos completou um questionário de autopreenchimento. Ao adotar a metodologia de análise de regressão logística, as seguintes características psicológicas e comportamentais foram encontradas e associadas ao grupo de indivíduos em situação de inadimplência: a) dimensões negativas relacionadas com dinheiro (sofrimento, desigualdade e conflito); b) altas pontuações na escala de autoeficácia, provavelmente indicando um maior grau de otimismo e excesso de confiança; c) compradores classificados como compulsivos; d) indivíduos que consideram necessário dar presentes aos filhos e amigos, em datas especiais, mesmo que muitas pessoas considerem isso como sendo um luxo; e) problemas de autocontrole, identificados por pessoas que bebem, em média, mais de quatro copos de bebida alcoólica por dia.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the contribution of psychological variables and scales suggested by Economic Psychology in predicting individuals’ default. Therefore, a sample of 555 individuals completed a self-completion questionnaire, which was composed of psychological variables and scales. By adopting the methodology of the logistic regression, the following psychological and behavioral characteristics were found associated with the group of individuals in default: a) negative dimensions related to money (suffering, inequality and conflict); b) high scores on the self-efficacy scale, probably indicating a greater degree of optimism and over-confidence; c) buyers classified as compulsive; d) individuals who consider it necessary to give gifts to children and friends on special dates, even though many people consider this a luxury; e) problems of self-control identified by individuals who drink an average of more than four glasses of alcoholic beverage a day.

El objetivo de este estudio es investigar la contribución de variables psicológicas y escalas, sugeridas por la Psicología Económica, en la previsión del incumplimiento de personas físicas. Por lo tanto, una muestra de 555 individuos llenó un cuestionario que se autocompletaba, compuesto por variables psicológicas y escalas. Al adoptar la metodología de análisis de regresión logística, las siguientes características psicológicas y comportamentales fueron encontradas, asociadas con el grupo de individuos en situación de incumplimiento: a) dimensiones negativas relacionadas con el dinero (sufrimiento, desigualdad y conflicto); b) altas puntuaciones en la escala de autoeficacia, probablemente indicando un mayor grado de optimismo y exceso de confianza; c) compradores, clasificados como compulsivos; d) individuos que consideran necesario hacer regalos a sus hijos y amigos, en fechas especiales, aunque muchas personas consideren eso como un lujo; e) problemas de autocontrol, identificados por personas que beben, en promedio, más de cuatro copas de bebida alcohólica por día.

La evaluación en todos los niveles es una función fundamental en la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). La evaluación de los sistemas de vigilancia epidemiológica es esencial para asegurar que los problemas de importancia para la salud pública sean monitorizados de manera eficiente y efectiva. El Sistema de Información Nutricional sobre Vitaminas y Minerales (VMNIS, por sus siglas en inglés) se evaluó desde la perspectiva de sistema de vigilancia e informática en salud pública. Los pasos incluyeron: el involucramiento de las partes interesadas en la evaluación, la descripción del sistema de vigilancia, el enfoque del diseño para la evaluación, la recopilación de pruebas fiables sobre el rendimiento del sistema, la justificación y desarrollo de conclusiones y recomendaciones, y la diseminación de las lecciones aprendidas de la evaluación. Después de este proceso, la OMS inició importantes esfuerzos para mejorar y ampliar el Sistema de Información Nutricional sobre Vitaminas y Minerales para lograr una base de datos más flexible y eficiente. Este artículo resume la evaluación de esta base de datos para documentar un buen ejemplo de cómo los marcos de evaluación en salud pública pueden llevar a mejorar la información en los sistemas de vigilancia contribuyendo de esta manera al objetivo final de mejorar la salud pública.

Evaluation at all levels is a fundamental function at World Health Organization (WHO). Evaluation of public health surveillance systems is essential to ensure that problems of public health importance are monitored efficiently and effectively. The WHO's Vitamin and Mineral Nutrition Information System (VMNIS) was evaluated from the perspective of public health surveillance and informatics. Steps included: engaging the stakeholders of the evaluation; describing the surveillance system; focusing the evaluation design; gathering credible evidence regarding system performance; justifying and stating conclusions and recommendations, and sharing lessons learned from the evaluation. Following this assessment, WHO has begun major efforts to upgrade and expand the VMNIS and now the database is more flexible and efficient. The database evaluation summarized in this paper provides a good example of how public health evaluation frameworks can lead to improved surveillance and enhanced information systems, thus making progress toward the ultimate goal of improving public health.

Diversos estudos, em diferentes países, têm buscado verificar a associação existente entre a diversificação de negócios e o desempenho corporativo. Essencialmente, três modelos têm sido testados para descrever essa associação: o modelo linear, o modelo curvilíneo ('U invertido') e o modelo intermediário. Esse trabalho tem por objetivo estudar esta possível relação a partir de evidências empíricas que dizem respeito às empresas industriais brasileiras. Usando dados de companhias de capital aberto no período 1997-2001, procedeu-se a uma análise de painel por meio dos métodos de Efeitos Fixos e Efeitos Aleatórios. Os dados não apresentaram aderência suficiente para aceitar a existência de um efeito positivo entre estratégias de diversificação e desempenho, seja linearmente seja exponencialmente. Assim, o modelo que apresentou melhor grau de ajuste aos dados foi o modelo curvilíneo por meio das formas funcionais quadrática e cúbica, o que sugere a existência de pontos em que os custos marginais da diversificação superam os benefícios marginais e vice-versa. Porém a relação mostrou-se indefinida, não sendo possível concluir se ocorre sob a forma de 'U' ou de 'U invertido'. Os principais resultados obtidos na pesquisa apóiam algumas evidências empíricas encontradas em outros países emergentes.

Several studies, in different countries, have been investigating the relationship between diversification of businesses and corporate performance. Basically, three models have been tested to describe that relationship: the linear model, the curvilinear model ('inverted U'), and the intermediate model. This paper focuses on theme, using the Brazilian industrial companies as the empirical evidence. The study scrutinizes the performance of enterprises that were listed in the São Paulo Stock Exchange in the period 1997-2001, via a panel analysis through the methods of Fixed Effects and Random Effects. The data didn't show enough adherence to accept that a positive relationship exists between diversification strategies and performance, neither lineally nor exponentially. The model that showed a better adjustment degree was the curvilinear model (through the quadratic and cubic functional forms) that can be interpreted as an evidence about the existence of points in which the marginal costs of diversification overcomes the marginal benefits and vice-versa. However, the relationship was shown indefinite; it was unable to conclude if the real shape is similar to an 'U' of an 'inverted U'. The main results obtained in the research support some empirical evidences found in other emerging countries.
