ABSTRACT There is just little information about the technological aspects of the wood of Brazilian native tree species, which limits their suitable use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistograph amplitudes of the wood from six native tree species in different wood density classes, and correlate them with their wood densities to demonstrate the efficiency of this nondestructive technique. The results of the resistograph analysis divided the species into three classes. Analyses of basic and bulk densities of their wood showed statistically significant differences among the evaluated samples that divided them into four classes. The comparison of resistograph method and observed densities showed only a slight difference among the density classes. Therefore, it was found in this study that resistograph analysis may be used for explaining wood properties as well as achieving satisfactory correlations with their actual values, especially the physical properties of species with high wood density.

Resumo Apresentamos uma revisão das visões controversas acerca da classificação fisionômica da Floresta de Linhares, aqui definida como a floresta sobre tabuleiros costeiros que ocorre entre os rios Doce e Barra Seca, no norte do Espírito Santo. Compilamos informações sobre o clima estacional dessa região e analisamos a inter-relação das variações interanuais e da dinâmica sazonal da precipitação com atributos ecológicos da floresta. Nossas interpretações revelaram que dados mensais médios de precipitação não exprimem a realidade dos períodos biologicamente secos ano a ano e suas consequências sobre a fisionomia da vegetação. Percebemos que a Floresta de Linhares pode se manifestar como semidecídua ou perenifólia, a depender da severidade da seca em um dado período. Então, propomos que a flexibilidade do regime de renovação foliar da Floresta de Linhares deve ser considerada em sua classificação. Sugerimos classificar a floresta duplamente como estacional semidecidual nos períodos anuais ou supra-anuais caracterizados por deficit hídrico pronunciado, e como floresta estacional perenifólia nos períodos anuais ou supra-anuais sem deficit hídrico significativo.

Abstract We present a review of the controversial points of view concerning the physiognomic classification of Linhares Forest, which is defined here as the forest over coastal tablelands that is found between the Rio Doce and the Rio Barra Seca, in the north of Espírito Santo. We compiled information about the seasonal climate of such region and analyzed the relationship of both the interannual variation and the seasonality of the rainfall with the ecological attributes of the forest. Our interpretations unveiled that the average monthly rainfall does not express the reality of the biologically dry periods year after year nor does it express the consequences on the vegetation physiognomy. We perceived that Linhares Forest may manifest itself as semideciduous or evergreen, depending on the drought severity within a given period. Thus, we propose that the flexibility of Linhares Forest leaf flush regime must be considered in its classification. We suggest a double classification for the forest: one as a seasonal semideciduous forest during annual or supra-annual periods that are characterized by pronounced water deficit and the other as a seasonal evergreen forest during annual or supra-annual periods with no significant water deficit.

Este trabalho apresenta a flora de espécies arbóreas e palmeiras na floresta estacional semidecidual na planície aluvial do rio Doce, uma área de cerca de 20.000 ha, a partir de Linhares (ES) até próximo à foz no oceano atlântico. Foram determinadas 408 espécies (27 classificadas em gênero) e 59 famílias, entre arbóreas e palmeiras. Por meio da análise de agrupamento, foi evidenciado que a floresta do rio Doce é muito semelhante floristicamente à floresta estacional dos tabuleiros terciários, que estas se agrupam com as florestas estacionais do rio Doce em MG e que, por sua vez, todas estas se agrupam com as florestas ombrófilas do sul da Bahia, sendo o conjunto nitidamente separado das outras formações ombrófilas costeiras. Foram encontradas dezenas de espécies deocorrência restrita ou pouco frequentes em levantamentos na floresta atlântica, enfatizando a importância da área para conservação da biodiversidade. Pelo fato das matas de cacau na região abrangerem mais de 80% dessa área, sugere-se a delimitação de uma Área de Proteção Ambiental, que permita conciliar o cultivo do cacau com a proteção da biodiversidade.

The tree and palm flora was studied in the Atlantic forest of the rio Doce alluvial floodplain, in a 20,000ha area, between Linhares (Espírito Santo State) and the Atlantic Ocean. The floristic survey recorded 408 species and 59 families. Floristic composition was compared to other forests of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro states using cluster analysis. The forest flora of the study area was most similar to that of forests in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Bahia. Dozens of species in the study area are restricted and rare in Atlantic forest; this area deserves special attention for biodiversity conservation. The Brazilian government should pay heed to the biological importance of this area and declare it an Environmental Protection Area, a type of conservation unit where sustained exploitation of resources is legal. We understand that, in practical terms, this sort of conservation unit is not very efficient in conserving natural resources, but it would be a start and might contribute to improved awareness, especially by local farmers and politicians.
